She was born in Qingdao, Shandong, and raised in Yantai, Shandong. She graduated from Shanghai Xie Jin's Star School and Shanghai Theatre Academy.

She has received the best actress awards from Tokyo International Film Festival, Beijing College Student Film Festival, Eurasia International Film Festival and Hundred Flowers Awards. She has been cited as the China's "most beautiful" woman in 2010 by the newspaper Beijing News.[1][2] As a result of her beauty, Fan Bingbing has been a regular subject of tabloids. Many times she took legal actions against defamations to protect her personal rights and interests. Her famous saying is Thousands of arrows penetrate the heart, Just try to get used to it.[3] Acoording to her appearances on the red carpet, movie premiere and fashion shows, the media describe her as the fashion icon in China.

Career

In 1997, Fan rose to stardom for her supporting role as Jin Suo in the Chinese television drama Princess Pearl (Which produced by HuNan TV Station)and its sequel in 1998, which starred Zhao Wei and Ruby Lin in the leading roles. Then Fan signed a contract with Chiung Yao’s company. The contract ended two years later.

In 2000, Fan joined a company belonged to Wang Jinghua, who is a well-known artists manager in mainland China. At the end of 2000, Wang Jinghua became the general manager of Huayi Brothers, so Fan Bingbing signed a six-year contract with Huayi Brothers. Druing the time in Huayi, Fan Bingbing starred in many movies and television series, such as Young Justice Bao II (2001) , Red Poppies (2002) , adapted from the Mao Dun Literature Prize novel, and The Proud Twins (2005), adapted from Gu Long's novel Juedai Shuangjiao. In 2003, Fan Bingbing starred in Feng Xiaogang's Cell Phone, which earned her a Best Actress Award at the 27th Hundred Flowers Awards,[4] a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the 24th Golden Rooster Awards[5] and a Outstanding New Actress nomination from the 10th Huabiao Awards[6] .

In 2004, Fan Bingbing starred in the film The Twins Effect II.

In 2005, Fan Bingbing released her first album Just Begun and starred in A Chinese Tall Story.

In 2006, Fan Bingbing appeared in the film A Battle of Wits. For the role, Fan received a Golden Bauhinia Awards nomination. The same year, Forbes China gave its most prized award, the Star of the Year, to Fan Bingbing, for her popularity, high press coverage and website hits in last year.[7]

2007 was a very busy year for Fan Bingbing. In this year, She starred in 8 films. In December 2007, Fan Bingbing won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the 44th Golden Horse Film Awards for her role in The Matrimony.[8] Fan also won the Best Actress Award of 4th Eurasia International Film Festival for the film Lost in Beijing.[9] The same year, Fan started her own studio, Fan Bingbing Studio. The studio's first television production was Rouge Snow, followed by Jin Da Ban De Zuihou Yiye.

In 2008. Fan started an arts school in Huairou, Beijing, and served as its principal, but the school was actually run by her parents. She also became the leader of the acting team of West Movie Group's arts center.

In 2009, Fan starred in Shinjuku Incident with Jackie Chan and Sophie's Revenge with Zhang Ziyi. Fan also appeared in Bodyguards and Assassins, which earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the Hong Kong Film Awards.[10]

In 2010, Fan Bingbing starred in Chen Kaige’s film Sacrifice. Fan also appeared in Wang Xiaoshuai's Chongqing Blues, which premiered at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. On October 24, 2010, Fan's another film Buddha Mountain premiered at the 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival,[11] which earned her the Best Actress Award.[12]

In 2011, Fan starred in Shaolin with Andy Lau, The Founding of a Party and Stretch with Nicolas Cazalé and David Carradine. On March 4, the film Buddha Mountain was released in mainland China. On April 28, Fan won the Best Actress Award at the 18th Beijing College Student Film Festival for the film Buddha Mountain.[13] In May, Fan appeared at the 64th Cannes Film Festival to promote her film My Way together with director Kang Je-gyu and South Korean actor Jang Dong-gun along with Japanese actor Joe Odagiri. In October, she became one member of the International Competition Jury of 24th Tokyo International Film Festival.[14]

On May 16, 2012, Fan Bingbing, the only global spokesperson from Asia on behalf of Paris L’Oreal,[15] attended the opening ceremony of 65th Cannes Film Festival. On May 21, 2012, Forbes ranked Fan Bingbing No. 3 on the 2012 Forbes China Celebrity 100 List, according to Fan’s success in the past year with the films “Buddha Mountain,” “The Founding of a Party” , “Shaolin” and a slew of endorsement deals from companies ranging from Nokia to Haagen-Dazs.[16] Fan’s new film Double Xposure will be released on September 29, 2012.[17]

Philanthropy

Heart Ali,[18] a project of Fan Bingbing and Maite CEO Chen Lizhi (publicist for The Flowers of War), aimed to rescue the children who suffered from Congenital Heart Disease in Ngari area, Tibet. Fan Bingbing has visited sevral times so far with medical teams to identify children in need of treatment.[19] After identification, the children and their parents are brought in groups to Beijing or Shanghai for surgery.

The first screening:

  • August 8, 2010, Fan Bingbing and several other people from Beijing, went to Tibet Ngari area, to screen children with congenital heart disease. They diagnosed 267 children with congenital heart disease.[20][21]

Second screening:

  • In June 2011, a volunteer group, convened by Fan Bingbing studio and Maite CEO Chen Lizhi, including members from Fan Bingbing studio, two doctors of Tsinghua University First Affiliated Hospital Heart Diseases Center and 9 other volunteers, carrying portable echocardiography equipment, went to Tibet Ngari area to diagnose the children with congenital heart disease. This time, the group screened 336 children, diagnosed 78 cases of congenital heart disease.[22][23][24][25]

Third screening:

  • April 5, 2012, Fan Bingbing studio members, Maite CEO Chen Lizhi, two doctors of Tsinghua University First Affiliated Hospital, two doctors of the Shanghai Yodak Cardio-thoracic Hospital and some other volunteers, went to Tibet Ngari area, to screen the children with congenital heart disease. In 12 days, volunteers screened almost ten thousand children, diagnosed more than 160 cases of congenital heart disease.[26]

Since August 2010, a total of 80 children with congenital heart disease have received the surgery in Beijing and Shanghai.

Fashion

On May 13,2010, Fan Bingbing wore a stunning “Dragon Robe” on the red carpet of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.[27] The dress, co-designed by a China’s Laurence Hsu and Fan herself, features two leaping dragons and crashing waves on the hem, in the bright yellow color that only emperors could use in ancient China. The dress is collected by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Fashion designer Laurence Hsu announced the dress that shown by the museum is an “upgraded” version of the original, which was bought by Madame Tussauds.[28]

On May 11, 2011, Fan wearing a crane dress appeared on the red carpet of 64th Cannes Film Festival Opening Ceremony.[29] The dress was auctioned off by Fan herself for about a million CNY for her charity project, Heart Ali, on April 27,2012.[30][31]

On the red carpet of opening ceremony of 65th Cannes Film Festival, Fan wore an elegant pale strapless gown by her friend Christopher Bu, decorated with bright floral designs and stories about Four Beauties of ancient China.[32][33] Inspired by a porcelain vase, the ancient vibe of her dress was complemented by her hair, which was pinned to look like a young girl from the Tang Dynasty.

Due to the three times Cannes Film Festival red carpet shows, Fan has attracted notable media attention and received tons of positive reviews. In recent years, Fan received lots of invitations from lots of fashion brands, such as Valentino Garavani, Giorgio Armani, Salvatore Ferragamo Italia S.p.A., Atelier Versace and Louis Vuitton, to attend the fashion shows in Paris, Beijing and Shanghai. On July 3, 2012, Fan Bingbing closed the Stéphane Rolland Couture show in Paris,[34][35] as the first mainland Chinese star to be featured in a major Paris fashion show finale.[36] On July 31, 2012, Fan Bingbing was ranked at number nine on Vanity Fair's International Best Dressed list 2012.[37][38][39] On September 19,2012, Fan Bingbing was honored the Personal Style Award by ELLe USA.[40]

About the Nickname Fan Ye

Chinese media and the fans give the nickname Fan Ye to Fan Bingbing. In Chinese culture, Ye always refers to a person who is generous, compassionate and strong-minded. For example, in Chinese history, servants often addressed the emperor as Wan Sui Ye. Hong Kong film actor stephen chow (Zhou Xingchi) has a nickname Xing Ye.
