Translation

Hello Indian experts, I have created an article about a film named Raj Hath. The spelling of the film in hindi is "राजहठ" (see the poster in the article). In English Raj Hath means "King's hand" but seeing the spelling in hindi I have doubts that the real meaning is something else. Can someone tell me what is the real translation? Jim Carter (from public cyber) 20:49, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The literal translation would be "King's (or Kings', or Royal) obstinacy (or stubbornness)". Abecedare (talk) 21:19, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Abecedare. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 07:17, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cutest Penguin It is commonly पर सराहा जायेगा instead of पर सराहना किया जायेगा. Vigyani it should be है instead of हैं (the dot in the top should not be there in this particular use). And it should be जोड़ें instead of जोड़े in all the three suggestions (the dot in the top should be there in this particular use). I would suggest the last one with this correction. Hindi is my mother tongue and I read a lot in Hindi and write online often in Hindi (not under AmritasyaPutra). --AmritasyaPutraT 10:04, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@AmritasyaPutra: I used Google translator since I don't have Hindi fonts in OS, and there is no difference. My point of view was to encourage the user to move on Hindi Wikipedia. If you have better knowledge you can suggest here. — CutestPenguinHangout 10:11, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This doesn't actually seem to be an article on the caste since these changes.[1] It's more or less a cutdown version of Madala Panji which seems wrong. There are comments on my talk page about this and arguments at List of Shudra Hindu saints‎. Dougweller (talk) 18:11, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I will take it up on the talk page. I do agree with this editor that karans are probably not shudras. All the karans I know wear the jandhyam thread, which is not done by the shudra castes. Kautilya3 (talk) 19:03, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Karans , those live in Odisha can never be approved of being Shudras. Looking to the sources that describe them as shudras , those are written by Bengali people , who are very much alien to Odia culture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bitthalns (talkcontribs) 14:20, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Bitthalns: Please find some reliable sources that can establish the issue one way or another, and we can edit the page accordingly. Kautilya3 (talk) 14:48, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Kautilya3:A few recent sources although I'm not sure they will help with this specific issue. However this article can benefit from any well sourced material. [2] [3] [4] Dougweller (talk) 15:06, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Political map of India in India

[5] This map in India needs fixing in a hurry. Pondicherry (G) points to multiple places which is obviously not the case. If someone with the technical skills could correct this that would count as their good deed of the day. Thanks. --regentspark (comment) 21:34, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is indeed the case. See Puducherry. Kautilya3 (talk) 22:44, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The map appears accurate to me; Pondicherry is not a contiguous region. Vanamonde93 (talk) 22:55, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are right assuming Wikipedia is right :) I had no idea that Pondicherry/Puducherry was so disjointed. --regentspark (comment) 23:45, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Does anyone know. why those districts are not made part of the respective states ? --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 00:18, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am not an expert on the history of the states, but I believe it has something to do with the fact that all of Puducherry/Pondicherry (ie the disjointed bits) were a French colony, and so the accession to India worked differently from other states. Daman & Diu, which were Portuguese colonies (I think) remained a Union-territory, and were not integrated with their neighboring states either. Vanamonde93 (talk) 00:52, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The territory of Puducherry was merged with the Indian Union in November 1954 as part of the defacto agreement signed between Government of India and Government of France, later the dejure transfer of Puducherry happened in August 1962. I believe it was a political choice, there was one more colony Chandannagar freed in the same manner but it was merged with the state of West Bengal. Puducherry (the specific one falling in Tamil Nadu) has an interesting history -- Matrimandir is walkable distance (it was a long walk) from Puducherry Railway station (but falls under Tamil Nadu state). --AmritasyaPutraT 01:18, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I read about Chandannagar. Thats why I was curios to know. Chandigarh is UT because of dispute between Haryana and Punjab. In case of parts of Puducherry, there shouldn't be any territorial dispute, as they are well inside the state areas. --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 01:43, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shared history (or the lack of it) should certainly be a consideration in organizing provinces. For example, the forcible merger of Telengana into Andhra Pradesh was widely regarded as a mistake, which has now been reversed. Kautilya3 (talk) 09:12, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, the usage of "Indo-Brazilian" is up for discussion, see Talk:Anglo-Nubian. You may be interested as it derives from something from India. -- 65.94.171.225 (talk) 05:34, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

U-DISE and articles about secondary schools

U-DISE (Unified District Information System for Education) is a database of information about schools in India. See http://www.dise.in/udise.html and U-DISE

I wonder if someone could create a bot to create Wikipedia articles on all the secondary schools in the U-DISE database, in the same way that articles on all cities in the United States were created from census data by a bot. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 17:45, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Articles on all secondary schools? There could be a million of them, if not more! Kautilya3 (talk) 20:11, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. That's what we do for U.S.-based secondary schools. We write articles on them. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:17, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yet more crappy stubs, copyvios of school websites and loads of POV coming then? Really, that notability guideline should be toughened up. • [1] I couldn't understand what [STOP] Intervening in communities without community approval exactly means. what kind of intervention and who should not intervene ? --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 02:50, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • [2] [STOP] Disallowing English (or other foreign) on Wikipedia,--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 02:52, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Answer 1) It means decisions should be taken after discussing on-wiki and reaching a consensus. It means Wikimedia India chapter can not force a consensus on WikiProject India. Similarly we can not force Tamil or Telugu Wikipedia to do anything. It should be discussed first. 2) Some local language Wikipedias don't allow English/Roman letters in their Wiki. If you go to their Wiki, and type "abcd" or any thing else in English, they will not allow you to save the edit (there is an automated process now, the you can not save edit with a blackisted URL here) User:Shyamal raised this issue.
BTW, will you attend if I nominate your name in next year's conference or whenever I'll get chance (they will bear expenses)? --TitoDutta 03:15, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the clarifications. So these STOPs are not for normal users. Presently, I live outside India. I will try to attend, if I am in India at the time of the conference. I missed the chance in 2011, that time I was living very close to the conference venue. I was not very active that time :(. --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 03:49, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Call for improving articles about Gwalior Gharana & Neela Bhagwat

This is a call for editors interested in contributing to help improve these articles. Today there was an event organized in Mumbai to receive contributions of bandishes (with detailed notes) of the Gwalior Gharana by Pandit Neela Bhagwat compiled over a period of 30 years. This was facilitated by Vishnu and Team A2K.

It would be befitting if we wikipedians could edit together to improve articles of the Gwalior Gharana and Pandit Neela Bhagwat. All of these pages need significant improvement. Thanks Arunram (talk)

I reviewed the article/AFD a few minutes back but decided to not to vote at the AFD, since I was not sure of my opinion (will perhaps add my thoughts as a comment...). Note that the subject is not really related to India as far as I can see, and those editing in the area of Iran/Afghanistan may be better able to weigh in. Abecedare (talk) 18:17, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Also FYI, the article is largely a duplicate of Mandwani. Abecedare (talk) 18:18, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cutest Penguin, posting a neutrally worded message here is not canvassing. --regentspark (comment) 18:26, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Aside: Could project members with a few minutes to spare occasionally weigh in on India related AFDs? You'll note that many of the AFDs at the bottom of the page have been relisted multiple times due to lack of responses; so even your individual considered opinion can make a huge difference! Abecedare (talk) 18:35, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello all! I fail to understand the content of the subject template; at least I fail to understand its name and its content. By the name I would assume this template should have included links to articles which are about Indian people. That would mainly be list articles, say all the entries of Lists of people from India by state under the header "By state". And then it would expand to "By religion", "By professions", "By recognitions", and so on. Is my understanding correct? Should the template be edited in that fashion? Currently it has articles about India and not Indian people. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 11:23, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A category might be better, maybe. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 11:41, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Means? §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 12:19, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Indian people. As it is now, the template could be huuuuuuge, covering all aspects of India. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 12:35, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, and the category is also huge, with many subcategories. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 12:37, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We already have a category. the template is supposed to be for links of articles that are "Lists of Indians". The template won't actually have any individual's name in it. It also would include the most prime list-articles. It won't link categories or the sub-categories; especially the trivial ones like the Category:Twin people from India. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 12:40, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear India experts: I can't find this village or the Udayamarthandapuram Panchayath in the list of villages at http://www.tnrd.gov.in/databases/Villages.pdf , but there is a village of this name on this list under Vadipatti. Can someone who knows Indian geography check to see if the draft article has the correct municipal designation? —Anne Delong (talk) 19:31, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Anne Delong: Which draft article are you referring to? §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 05:18, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry - somehow I managed to paste the wrong title when I started this thread. It should have been "Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Nachikulam". I've fixed it now. —Anne Delong (talk) 11:39, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Anne Delong:, I find "Nachikulam" as the 12th entry in "Vadipatti". "Udhyamarthandapuram" (with an extra "h") is the 23rd entry under "Muthupettai". Is that what you need? Cheers! Kautilya3 (talk) 18:28, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for finding that, Dharmadhyaksha. Since these two places are in different "blocks', does that mean that the lead sentence in that draft is incorrect? If so, what should it say instead? —Anne Delong (talk) 19:52, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, now, I understand the issue. This is apparently a different "Nachikulam" from the one given in the village database. This "Nachikulam" won't appear in the database because it doesn't have a panchayat (village administration) of its own. It is some kind of a "suburb" of Udhayamarthandapuram. It is impressive that they want a Wiki page for themselves! If you are wondering if this page should be allowed, I don't see why not. You might ask them to clarify how it relates to the Udhayamarthandapuram village. Kautilya3 (talk) 20:58, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dharmeshdar

So a new article Dharmeshdar states that this person was a stepson of Akbar the great. My searches on Google have been fruitless, but I know little about Indian history, and there very well might be multiple spellings for this person. I recognize the possibility that this is a hoax but I seriously doubt it. I would appreciate if someone knowledgable could comment at the talk page. Oiyarbepsy (talk) 04:04, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A likely hoax. I have nominated it for deletion. Abecedare (talk) 04:47, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"Stepson of Akbar"?!?! Means Akbar married some woman who birthed a boy whose father was someone else? So dubious for a 15th century Mughal king. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 05:44, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you make articles on ethnic Indian populations in Canada, be sure to include info on Air India 182's impact on the community

I started some stubs on ethnic communities in Toronto and Montreal. If you want to start articles on the following:

Please be sure to research and see if you can find information on how Air India Flight 182 impacted those communities? How many families were affected? Were any Canadian Indian community leaders on board? I also know that Canadian officials made condolences to India without acknowledging the Canadian Indian community.

There was a CBC documentary I saw which involved relatives in Vancouver, Toronto, and then Montreal recounting what they said to their loved ones before they boarded the plane. WhisperToMe (talk) 03:23, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear India experts: This old AfC submission appears to be about a notable politician. It needs some inline citations, but should be accepted if its improved a bit. When this happens, what should the title of the article be? What is this man's surname? Is "Swamy" a title or a part of his name? —Anne Delong (talk) 19:10, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
