Notes:

  • In 1985, there were nine preliminary judges who each gave the contestants a score of 2, 3, or 4. This meant that each contestant could receive a minimum score of 18 and a maximum of 36.
  • The 1985 rules required that at least one contestant from each continent advanced to the top 15 semi-final round. This is why Miss Zaire (with a score of 24) qualified, while both Miss Finland and Miss Singapore (score of 26) did not.

Notes

Debuts

  • Ivory Coast, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Republic of Zaire competed in Miss World for the first time.

  • Miss Republic of Zaire became the first semi-finalist in Miss World from her country after she placed as the 2nd runner-up in Miss Universe 1985 four months before. She also won the trophy of Queen of Africa.
  • Miss United States of America was the first non-Latin contestant to receive the award of Queen of Americas.
  • Bahamas sent its third white delegate to Miss World the first since Frances Clarkson in 1971.
  • Miss New Zealand won the Queen of Oceania award for the first time.

  • Miss Malta competed in Miss Universe 1987 in Singapore.

  • 7 out of 15 countries which made it into the semifinals, were not in the semifinals last year: New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Sweden (1980), and Jamaica (1983). Paraguay, Poland, and Republic of Zaire made it into the semi-finals for the first time. Paraguay marked its debut in 1959, while Poland in 1983. Republic of Zaire, on the other hand, marked its debut in Miss World the same year; however, its name was later replaced by the Congo Democratic Republic in Miss World 2005.
