Notes

Debuts

  • Belize and Cook Islands competed in Miss World for the first time.

Returning countries

  • Argentina and Papua New Guinea last competed in 1981. Argentina returned to Miss World after a 6-year war in the Falkland Islands which brought its dispute against the United Kingdom.
  • Curaçao and Nigeria last competed in 1985.

Withdrawals and Nations not competing

  • British Virgin Islands and Sierra Leone did not compete in Miss World because of the national pageant postponement.

Other notes

  • This is the first time that Miss World has twelve semi-finalists, and six out of the semi-finalists went straight into the Top 6 finalists.
  • Preliminary swimsuits in Miss World 1987 were shot in the island of Malta.
  • Hong Kong's Pauline Yeung Bo Ling went on to place as 4th runner-up in Miss Universe 1988 which was held in Taiwan. She is the highest placed Miss Hong Kong at Miss World and Miss Universe pageant since TVB hosted the pageant in 1973 (Miss Virginia Lee was second runner-up in Miss Universe 1954 and Judy Dan was third runner-up in Miss Universe 1952). She is also the first and so far only Hong Kong representative to win the Queen of Asia award. Iceland, Anna Margret Jonsdóttir, who placed as 2nd runner-up in Miss World, failed to make the semi-finals at Miss Universe 1988, although she managed to place 8th in that pageant's preliminary swimsuit competition.
  • First time records:
    • United Kingdom failed to make into the semi-finals after 30 years, while United States after 11 years.
    • Guam had received the award for Queen of Oceania for the first time other than Australia and New Zealand.
  • 78 contestants sang God Bless The Children as their production number while wearing evening gowns.
  • Belgium and Bermuda did not compete in Miss Universe 1987 because of scheduling conflicts in which the pageant took place in May of that same year.
  • 9 out of 12 countries which made it into the semi-finals, were not in the semi-finals last year: France (1980), Argentina (1981), Guam (1982), Hong Kong (1983), Holland (1984), Iceland, Israel, and Poland (1985). Nigeria had made into the semi-finals for the first time since its debut in 1963.
  • Mayte Sanchez from Gibraltar did also compete in Miss Universe 1988.
