Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week, for excellent work in a largely un-rewarded subject area. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Northern Antarctica submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

As a 6-year veteran editor with over a 150,000 edits, Boleyn has quietly been creating tons and tons of disambiguation pages. This is an important area of work, but it doesn't generally get much attention, so Boleyn is probably well overdue for a bit of recognition. After all, users who faithfully work to improve the encyclopedia — yet don't get very much of the limelight — are the people that this award was designed for.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Your advice please...

Hello!

You are the disambiguation guru. It used to be piped links were discouraged on disambiguations pages. That made sense to me. Is that still what is recommended? HMS Toronto has several piped links. Should I unpipe them?

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 20:13, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Geo Swan, I hope you're well. Yes, WP:PIPING is still discouraged, so that readers can see the real link and have less chance of ending up at a disambiguation page again by mistake, and can more easily go directly to the right page. On the page you mentioned, some of the links need a blue link on their line (WP:DDD). Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 20:20, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A DAB policy question

Since you are the DAB Page Queen, I wonder if you could answer a question for me. While disambiguating links, I often stop to edit the dab pages themselves. When I ran across one that added foreign text to some of the links, I removed the non-English characters, thinking it was an anomaly. But now I've found another such page, and it made me wonder if I was too hasty on the earlier edit. MOS:DAB had nothing to say about it. Is there any established policy about having non-English names or words on dab pages? How do you handle these? TIA — Gorthian (talk) 04:03, 14 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Gorthian. I don't like these, but I don't always remove them. I think the most relevant part of MOS:D for them is MOS:DABENTRY: Keep the description associated with a link to a minimum, just sufficient to allow the reader to find the correct link. In many cases, the title of the article alone will be sufficient and no additional description is necessary. Often it is perfectly clear what the difference is and the translation is superfluous. However, with languages I don't understand, I err on the side of being generous when deciding whether it is definitely unneeded. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 17:01, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your thoughtful response; that's very helpful. — Gorthian (talk) 18:23, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Vladimir Popov (economist)

Hello, you reverted the addition of a link to a (non-existing) page "Vladimir Popov (economist)", may I ask you to justify this removal? I added this link after looking for information on said person and noticing that he did not have a page. I believe he is a sufficiently important academic to be cited on Wikipedia which you can check here: [1] Thank you. Thibaut Lienart (talk) 09:52, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, ThibautLienart, thanks for you message. In my edit summary, I linked to MOS:DABRL, which if you click on it says it better than I probably can. The economist may well be notable and deserving of an article, but a WP:DISAMBIGUATION page is there essentially as an index of existing WP articles and topics mentioned within them. When/if an article's created, it would then be added to the dab. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 10:58, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks for taking the time to explain Boleyn, I understand it's not a particularly good thing to add links to non-existing articles, I guess my error was induced by the Vladimir popov (actor) present on that disambiguation page. Thibaut Lienart (talk) 11:39, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion please...

You are my goto expert on disambiguation. One of the entries in the disambiguation page FNU contained a piped link. Was my attempt to fix it correct?

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 12:56, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Geo Swan, nice to hear from you. It was a good change, I made 2 very minor adjustments. I added back link to subsection of article to get readers there faster, so although it's piped, everyone can see which article it leads to. I also moved the link to the beginning of the sentence, as the reader gets to it first and may not then have to bother reading the rest of the sentence if it's the right one. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 13:57, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

David Kidd

Hi - I tried to cut a small corner by adding a link to the page David Kidd (writer) from the page David Kidd before I'd actually written the page. You undid this, because the link was, at that point, dead. Now that I've written the article, would you be happy for me to reverse your undo so that it features on the disambiguation page? StenLasha (talk) 12:02, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, I've re-added it myself now, sorry I inconvenienced you. In future if you put an edit summary like 'Article being created now', it's unlikely to be undone. Thanks for creating the article, Boleyn (talk) 16:16, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ayşe Sultan

I cannot understand why you insist on reverting my edits. To begin with, the very introduction of that page is wrong,as the list actually includes three wives and a daughter. Also,Murad IV's and Osman II's wives are both confirmed to have held the title of Haseki Sultan and thus should be credited as such. The fact that the page hasn't been updated for some time doesn't mean it doesn't need to,you know.Do be so kind as to restore the page to it's proper form. Chris Liak (talk) 22:50, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris, I think my edit summaries explained about the piping, overlinking etc and being overlengthy and directed you to the guidelines on this at MOS:DABENTRY. If there are changes to be made, that's fine, but please, only within the guidelines, and please read - and write - edit summaries. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 22:59, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I see that in your edit summary here you linked to MOS:DABRL. That section which you linked to says, amongst other things, "Do not create red links to articles that are unlikely ever to be written, or are likely to be removed as insufficiently notable topics." Don't you think that applies in this case? The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 11:37, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, James. I had a quick look before I re-added them and I didn't see anything to suggest they were non-notable, or that the redlinks they have in articles are wrong. With the redlinks, readers can click on them and then 'What links here' to get the full list of mentions they have on Wikipedia, as both are mentioned in more than one article. I think this is much more helpful to readers. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 09:52, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Participating?

All of these articles you are creating (which some are not necessary at all and I've requested that most of them should be merged with other pages), you've written that they are reality TV participants. Or they have participated in shows such as Geordie Shore or Ex on the Beach. They have appeared in these shows, you cannot participate in them. They're not gameshows. Also you made a page for Zahida Allen who has only appeared in 3 episodes on EOTB so far, her series of GS hasn't even got a start date yet - and it hasn't even been confirmed by MTV that she's a cast member yet (highly likely I know) - so why does she need a page? And again she isn't a participant. ThisIsDanny (talk) 14:14, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree - it, I would consider them participants, but you are welcome to change any wording you like. You should also inform creators if you nominate a page for deletion. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 16:33, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Nedim Ardoğa. From what I can gather, this question is about edits I made 6 years ago and the page in question has since been deleted, so I'm afraid I can't giv e you an answer. If after looking at WP:3DABS you feel a dab page is better than the double hatnote, feel free to create it. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 15:00, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Boleyn, I'd like to understand why you undid my AWB fix of Attack Squadron 55 (U.S. Navy). You stated in the comments that the article does indeed have other articles linking into it. However I had tagged it as dead-end (not orphan) since there are no links out from the stub article. Cheers Jake Brockman (talk) 19:23, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I misread it. I'm not sure it's a useful tag as the article's so short it could only possibly have one link, which would be quicker to put in than a tag though. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 19:42, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Charles Gray (songwriter) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
