Should the "clearboth" template be in this article?

The article in question is Guahaioque. In the edit page, there's a "clearboth" template under the "Etymology" section. Could anyone please tell me if this should this be included? Also, I removed "NOTOC" from the same section; could anyone please tell me if this was this the right thing to do?--Thylacine24 (talk) 03:25, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Thylacine24: The {{clearboth}} is used to push the text or other elements of the page down to clear conflicting elements. In this case, it was used to push the see also section down so it wouldn't conflict with the infobox. It won't hurt to keep it there. The {{NOTOC}} supresses the generation of a table of contents when not needed (usually we leave them out when the article is less than a screen tall or so). Orvilletalk 03:31, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Could you please tell me if you think either of those should be in that particular article or not?--Thylacine24 (talk) 12:00, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Thylacine24 (talk · contribs) Per the manual of style (Help:Section#Table_of_contents_(TOC)), removing the {{notoc}} is correct (since there are less than four headings in the article). As for the {{clearboth}} template, there's no definitive guidance. If it helps with the formatting then I would keep it; if not I would remove it, but be bold and decide whether it should be included or not. Orvilletalk 13:11, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Thylacine24: When removing a {{clear}} or {{clearboth}}, please verify the formatting for multiple browser window sizes and shapes. The editor who put it in there in the first place did so for some reason, and it may affect others depending on window size. -Arch dude (talk) 14:31, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Looking for a bot

    Helped
Hello, I am looking for a bot for an extremely long and tedious task. I have already read WP:BOTREQ but was unsure whether the task would be appropriate (as in, would the bot operator be willing/is it something a bot could do) although the task isn't one that would be denied (WP:FDB)? The task in question is removing all the flag icons on the page List of Nobel laureates which I have already started but soon realised it would take a very long time. The removal of flag icons has been agreed on the talk page. Should I post a request for a bot, or will I have to tackle the edit another way (the long and tedious way)? Regards, Willbb234 (talk) 16:34, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You don't need a bot for that. Just copy the entire source of the page into Notepad+ (or any text editor that supports regexes), replace all occurrences of a regex matching the flagicon template by the empty string, and copy it back. I'd do it myself, but I'm busy now. Maybe later tonight. Maproom (talk) 16:49, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to cite an episode of The Howard Stern Show as a source without violating Wikipedia’s copyright policies. How do I do that? Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 22:53, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Hitcher vs. Candyman: Template:Cite episode appears to be the appropriate template. By "without violating Wikipedia's copyright policies" I think you mean that you can't link to any recording of the episode on the Internet because they violate the copyright of the producers. Instead you can include a short quote from the show that verifies the material you want to add a citation for. That is just a guess, though, so please reply if that is not your problem. – Teratix 23:46, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Teratix. You've answered my question. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 23:50, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, Teratix, I do have one more question. What do I write down for the network? For example:

Stern, Howard; Quivers, Robin; Murray, Bill (8 October 2014). "Bill Murray". The Howard Stern Show. ???. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 23:58, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Inserting a Table of Contents

Helped How do I insert a table of contents and a summary table for a page? For instance, let's say I want to make a page about a movie. On the very left of the page is a "Page contents" table, and on the right a table that would provide some quick stats about said movie (Like profits from box office sales, budget, etc). How would I go about inserting those? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alure155 (talkcontribs) 23:20, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Our software automatically generates a table of contents, so don't sweat that. The other "table" to which you refer is called an "infobox". For help on inserting the right infobox and filling it with information, see Help:Infobox. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:42, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alure155: The easiest way to create a nice layout for a new article is to start with an existing article of the same type whose layout you like. For example you might choose to use The Little Mermaid (1989 film) as a starting point for your movie article. Note that the intro paragraph precedes the table of contents. There are quite a few other conventions about section names and order that have built up over the years, so using an existing article will cause your new article to be consistent with the thousands of other movie articles. -Arch dude (talk) 01:50, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Question about using warning templates on my personal sandbox page

    Helped
Hello. I have been editing Wikipedia pages for a really long time, but couldn't find the answer to this question:

Is it okay to test user template warnings on my logged-in personal sandbox page? For example, Template:*Checkuserblock-wide* (those asterisks were intentionally added by me so that I didn't disrupt this page). I wouldn't permanently leave those templates on my sandbox page, but I also wouldn't want to inadvertently do something that would potentially damage or block my Wikipedia account. Thank you! Beauty School Dropout (talk) 03:03, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Beauty School Dropout: As long as you're not creating spam, autobiographies, and the like, your sandbox is intended for testing. You can always add a heading to the top of the page stating that you are using it to test templates so the casual observer doesn't think you're actually blocked. Orvilletalk 03:21, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Beauty School Dropout (talk) 03:21, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Beauty School Dropout, just as a further FYI - rather than munging the template, you can use the <nowiki></nowiki> tags to force wiki markup to appear as plaintext in an article. Ironically I used that method in this very response. Chaheel Riens (talk) 13:31, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Beauty School Dropout and Chaheel Riens: An even better way is to use the tlx template: {{tlx|the template name|argument1|argument2|...}}. Or {{tlsx}} for substitution-only templates. TigraanClick here to contact me 13:56, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's limited to template usage though. <nowiki></nowiki> can be used for any and all markup, hence its usefulness. Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:48, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Do GA and FA articles need to be accessible?

The requirements for WP:B class articles require that the article "presents its content in an appropriately understandable way" and that "it is written with as broad an audience in mind as possible." This would logically mean that classes higher than B (WP:GA? and WP:FA?) would also have this requirement, but it doesn't. As it is now, an article can be written for experts and ignore the needs of those not knowledgeable about the subject and still get GA or FA; all that is required is that the grammar and prose are of high quality. I think it would be a good idea to add an accessibility requirement for both GA and FA status.--Megaman en m (talk) 07:27, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think a GA or FA that needs prior knowledge to understand the subject would already fail the "well written" standard of both GA and FA but if you think this should be clarified, feel free to suggest a change at WP:VPPR or WT:GA / WT:FA. If you believe a certain article is too complicated to be understood without prior knowledge, you should list it for reassessment. Regards SoWhy 08:17, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I politely disagree. Many scientific texts are well written, yet they are still impenetrable to laypeople. I will take you up on your suggestion to take it to WP:VPR, my proposal should not be too hard to implement.--Megaman en m (talk) 08:48, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Citing and referencing religious texts

Is there a standard way to use religious texts, such as the Torah, as references and cite them? How important is it to provide a link to the text being referenced in the citation, if at all, and how should the fact that when translated into English discrepancies are not uncommon between different translations? The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 16:28, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@The Editor's Apprentice: I'm not an expert. Ask the folks on the talk page at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Religion, who have probably figured this out in detail. However, Since the major religious texts are generally available online in multiple forms, I suggest you link to a site that presents the translation you cite together with the original and other translations and interpretations all on one place. If possible, use Wikisource, since that site on the one most likely to remain stable. -Arch dude (talk) 17:32, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: Thanks for the suggestion. I'll head over to the Wikiproject ask them as well as try and look for a site that lists multiple translations and also check out Wikisource. The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 17:56, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@The Editor's Apprentice: We have a ban upon original research. This ban includes your own research performed upon WP:PRIMARY religious sources. If you won't defer their analysis to WP:SECONDARY sources written by modern scholars, you'll end up blocked and banned before you know what's happening. So, I advise you to strongly avoid anything smacking of your own analysis, your own opinions or your own interpretation of the Torah. What has not been said recently by reputable, modern Bible scholars does not belong inside Wikipedia. Tgeorgescu (talk) 17:38, 4 July 2019 (UTC
@Tgeorgescu: I am very familiar with English Wikipedia rules regarding original research, thank you for the reminder. To note, nowhere in my original post do I mention doing my own analysis or denying any others. I'm not new to Wikipedia, but if I was, I think your comment would have had a strong chance of scaring me off, especially the phrase "you'll end up blocked and banned before you know what's happening", which I would hope would never be the case for any editor and that instead instances of original research would be removed and then amicably discussed with and explained to the editor would did the original research. The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 17:56, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@The Editor's Apprentice: Yup, I heard it from Sfbmod. However, the irony is that that editor was given enough advice and enough chances to repent from violating WP:OR, but he/she could not stop. Tgeorgescu (talk) 18:18, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Tgeorgescu: I see. That is an unfortunate situation, and the negativity of Sfbmod's actions passed far beyond assuming go faith and led to their banning. Having to deal with such a user would understandably be very annoying and disheartening. I guess what I would say is that until a user has shown consistently bad behavior, as Sfbmod did, you should speak to them as if their intentions are to be kind and help build up Wikipedia. The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 18:40, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, @Tgeorgescu:, I do not think that you competent enough to discuss who is going to be banned or blocked. Ruslik_Zero 19:54, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruslik0: I always tell those people that if they won't repent from breaking our WP:RULES they will get blocked and banned. Of course, the choice is theirs, not mine. I'd rather wish that they comply with WP:RULES, but there are some people who are unwilling to do so. WP:OR performed upon primary religious sources is a perennial problem in religion articles. I could not read Apprentice's mind and I did not check his/her contributions. I just wanted to tell him/her that if he/she meant performing such WP:OR, this will lead to trouble. I did not say that I wish that he/she gets blocked. I have just reacted to to use religious texts, such as the Torah, as references and cite them. Such phrase rang alarm bells. There is some guidance at WP:TRANSLATE. Harry096, if you have a connection with the company you have a conflict of interest and should probably not create the article yourself. This applies particularly if you are a paid editor. We are designing a library research online course at our university which will have two modules devoted to Wikipedia. One module will teach students how to use Wikipedia as a tertiary source. The evaluation process is permanently backlogged – no wonder, it's a miserable job, trying to be polite about the piles of <expletive deleted> that get submitted. No. Per MOS:BADITALICS, "a [foreign] proper name is usually not italicized". Clarityfiend (talk) 09:35, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would say mostly yes per MOS:FOREIGNITALIC. The section headings for creatures are foreign words which are italicised and not capitalised in the body of the article and so are not being treated as proper nouns and headings should be italicised. However the headings for sections about individual beings are foreign names which are capitalised in the body of the article, so the headings should not be italicised. It is not always obvious to me which is which and sometimes capitalisation and italicisation are inconsistent, eg kinara.TSventon (talk) 10:46, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And according to the "rule of thumb" at that part of the MOS, Aswang should not be ital but Bakunawa should. Which may look weird. Perhaps pick one form and stick with it. Leave as is may be as good as any change. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:01, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Please update image for me

Could someone please update visa policy map of Lebanon as the original one is incorrect when it comes to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visa + immigration approval is required. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ihavejustchangedstuff (talkcontribs) 07:08, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Ihavejustchangedstuff:, could you please provide a wikilink to the particular article, out of our 4.8 million-plus, that you have in mind, so that a willing volunteer editor does not first have to waste time with extensive guesswork and searching? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.177.55 (talk) 16:08, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can somebody with a bit more knowledge of page-moves have a look at what used to be Green Street (film) but is now Green Street Holigans please?

In the past I've tried to undo page moves, but have universally failed each time and created more of a mess than previously existed. Even if the page move were warranted, it should be "hooligans", not "holigans".

    Thanks. Chaheel Riens (talk) 10:04, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, for once I think I've done it. Chaheel Riens (talk) 10:15, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can somebody explain why my edit was reverted by CLCStudent twice? He also sent me one of those automatic warning that my edits "appear to constitute vandalism". Is it just because it mentioned the word prostitute? It is an essay, for God's sake! If somebody reads the essay will understand the example. Looloophole (talk) 15:23, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Looloophole: Not entirely certain (the lack of edit summary does not help). Hopefully CLC will see the mention here and comment further. If they do not respond you could start a discussion (preferably) at the article talk page or directly at the other editor's TP. Cheers. Eagleash (talk) 15:48, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The singer does not appear to be the same entity as the person involved in the Hugh Grant controversy. Eagleash (talk) 15:56, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yeah: that's the whole point of the list in question – hypothetical examples of different people having the same name who could be falsely equated by faulty synthesis, against which the essay is warning. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.177.55 (talk) 16:04, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
