Liam James Payne (29 August 1993 – 16 October 2024) was an English singer and songwriter, widely known as a member of the boy group One Direction. Together they achieved four number one singles and albums in the UK and became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.[9][10][11] He twice appeared as a solo auditionee on the British television series The X Factor - in the 2008 series and 2010 series, and was invited to join One Direction alongside fellow contestants in the latter, placing third and later achieving global success.

After One Direction's hiatus in 2016, Payne pursued a solo career, signing with Republic Records in North America.[12] In 2017, he released his debut solo single "Strip That Down", which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100, and was certified platinum in both countries. His solo studio album, LP1, was released in December 2019. During the first three years of his solo career, Payne sold over 18 million singles, 2.4 million albums, and amassed 3.9 billion streams.[13] In addition to his solo work, Payne produced remixes under the pseudonyms Big Payno and Payno. He collaborated with other musical artists and remixed tracks for both his group and singer Cheryl.[14] Payne died on 16 October 2024, having fallen from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Early life

Liam James Payne was born at New Cross Hospital in the Heath Town district of Wolverhampton on 29 August 1993, the son of infant nurse Karen Payne and fitter Geoff Payne. He had two older sisters named Nicola and Ruth.[15][16] Payne was born three weeks premature and suffered frequent illnesses. Until the age of four, he had regular tests done in hospital as doctors noticed one of his kidneys was scarred and dysfunctional. He said in a book that before he was four, "I was always in hospital having tests done but they couldn't find out what was wrong. They discovered that one of my kidneys wasn't working properly and it had scarred. I had to have 32 injections in my arm in the morning and evening to try and make me better."[17]

As a student, Payne was heavily involved in sports, particularly cross-country running. Payne joined the Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club to pursue his running career. For three years he was ranked in the top three 1500m runners in the country within his age group.[18][19]

He began taking boxing lessons at the age of 12 amidst bullying from older students in secondary school.[20] Payne completed 11 GCSEs at St Peter's Collegiate School (now St Peter's Collegiate Academy) before moving on to study music technology at City of Wolverhampton College.[10] Payne was introduced to the world of show business at the age of 12, as a member of the Pink Productions Theatre Company, appearing as Tony Manero from Saturday Night Fever.[21] Payne had previously performed in front of a crowd of 26,000 during a Wolverhampton Wanderers football match.[10][22]

Career

2008–2015: The X Factor and One Direction

Payne auditioned for the fifth series of The X Factor in 2008, at 14 years old, in front of judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh. Payne moved past the first round after performing Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon". He was cut at the Boot Camp stage, but Cowell then changed his mind and asked Payne to return for the judges' houses stage.[23] Payne was cut again during judges' houses, but was encouraged by Cowell to "come back in two years".[24]

Payne returned to the show in 2010 for the seventh series, auditioning in front of Cowell, Cole, Walsh and guest judge Natalie Imbruglia. He sang the Michael Bublé version of "Cry Me a River", which earned him four yeses and a standing ovation from Cowell. Payne was considered the second favourite to win the competition following his solo audition.[25] He failed to progress to the "Boys" category at judges' houses, but after a suggestion by guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, Payne, along with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, were put together to form a five-piece boy band at Wembley Arena, during the bootcamp stage of the competition, thus qualifying for the "Groups" category.[26] The group then got together for two weeks to get to know each other and to practice. For their qualifying song at Judges' houses, and their first song as a group, they performed an acoustic version of "Torn". Cowell later commented that the performance convinced him that the group "were confident, fun, like a gang of friends, and kind of fearless as well". The group quickly gained popularity in the UK, and came in third place on the show.[27]

After appearing on The X Factor, One Direction were signed to Simon Cowell's Syco Entertainment.[28] A book licensed by One Direction, One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story), was released in February 2011 and topped The Sunday Times' Best Seller list. Their debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful", was released in September 2011, and was a commercial and international success, reaching number one in several countries.[29] Their debut album, Up All Night, was released in Ireland and the UK of November of that year, charting at number one and number two, respectively. The album was released worldwide in March 2012, and One Direction became the first UK group to have their debut album reach number one in the United States.[30]

After the release of the album, the group headlined the Up All Night Tour. It had been intended only for the UK and Ireland,[31] Australian and North American legs of the tour were added due to demand.[32] A commercial success, tickets for the tour sold out in minutes and garnered positive reviews from critics who applauded the band's singing abilities and stage presence. The band released Up All Night: The Live Tour, a video album documenting the tour, in May 2012. That same month, One Direction's first book to be licensed in America, Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction, was published and topped The New York Times Best Seller list.[33]

In September 2012, "Live While We're Young", the lead single from the group's second album, was released, and was a global success. Another single, "Little Things", spawned the band's second number one single in the UK.[34] In November 2012, the group released their second album, Take Me Home, and it reached number one in over 35 countries. Reaching number one on the Billboard 200, the group became the first boy band in U.S. chart history to record two number-one albums in the same calendar year, and were the first group since 2008 to record two number-one albums in the same year.[35] Following the release of the album, the group embarked on their second headlining concert tour, the Take Me Home Tour. Performing 123 shows in North America, Asia, Oceania, and Europe, grossing $114 million. During the tour, One Direction covered Wheatus's "Teenage Dirtbag". In the original song, lead vocalist Brendan Brown performs a segment in a "female voice" which, in One Direction's rendition of the song Payne covered in falsetto. This garnered praise from Brown, who commented, "You can do my girl part anytime".[36] In August 2013, One Direction: This Is Us, a 3-D documentary concert film was released, accumulating a box office gross of $68.5 million.[37] One Direction's third book, One Direction: Where We Are: Our Band, Our Story: 100% Official, was released that same month.[38]

The group's third album, Midnight Memories, was released in November of the same year. It was the best-selling album worldwide in 2013 with 4 million copies sold globally.[39] The album's lead single, "Best Song Ever", is their highest-charting single in the U.S. to date.[40] The group embarked on their third headline tour, the Where We Are Tour. Tickets sold out in minutes,[41][42] and more shows were added due to "overwhelming demand".[43] The tour was their first all-stadium tour, averaging 49,848 fans per show.[44] In total, the tour grossed over $290 million and was the highest-grossing tour of 2014, the 15th highest-grossing concert tour of all time. It is still the highest-grossing tour of all time by a vocal group.[45] The tour was attended by 3.4 million fans.[44]

In September 2014, One Direction's fourth book, One Direction: Who We Are: Our Official Autobiography was released. The group's second concert film, One Direction: Where We Are – The Concert Film, was released in October 2014, showing footage of the band's shows at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. In November 2014, the group's fourth album, Four, was released, making it the last album to include Zayn Malik. Singles "Steal My Girl" and "Night Changes" were released, both achieving platinum status in the U.S. among other countries.[46][47] The album debuted number one in 18 countries, selling 3.2 million copies.[48] One Direction became the only group in the 58-year history of the Billboard 200 albums chart to have their first four albums debut at number one.[49] The group embarked on their fourth headlining world tour, the On the Road Again Tour, grossing $208 million[50] and selling 2.3 million tickets.[51] In November 2015, One Direction's fifth album, Made in the A.M., was released.[52] Singles "Drag Me Down"[53][54] and "Perfect"[55][56] both debuted at number one in various countries, and the album reached number one in the UK[57] and number two on the U.S. Billboard 200.[58] Following the release of the album, the group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.[59]

Following the departure of Zayn Malik, Payne was tasked with taking over the bulk of Malik's vocals.[60] Payne was known as one of the principal songwriters in One Direction, credited for co-writing more than half of the songs on the band's third and fourth album.[61][62] Together with Louis Tomlinson, Payne was also One Direction's top earner.[61]

2016–2021: Solo projects and LP1

Payne began working as a producer under the monikers "Big Payno" or "Payno", teaming up with fellow producers AfterHrs to remix several tracks including Cheryl's "I Don't Care" in 2014.[63] Some EDM websites noted Payne's remixes were venturing into future house.[64][65][66] Payne was also credited with writing Cole's "I Won't Break", off her album Only Human.[67]

In August 2014, Payne created and became director of Hampton Music Limited, a publishing company under which his solo projects appeared.[68][69] Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer is signed to One Mode Productions Limited, on which Payne served as one of the directors.[70] Payne began working on future projects, collaborating with Juicy J on seven tracks with more in the works,[71][72] DJ Mustard,[73] and Miguel.[74] He was in the studio with producer and performing artist Pharrell Williams.[75] Payne also contacted The Collective member and YouTube musician and producer Will Singe.[76] In 2015, Payne collaborated with songwriter Jamie Scott on Irish band Hometown's single "The Night We Met".[77] In early 2016, Payne featured on a track titled "You" by Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J. Payne denied that the track was a single, but it was confirmed to be a leak from an untitled, unreleased mixtape.[78][79]

Payne in October 2018

In October 2016, it was announced that Payne had signed a recording contract with Republic Records.[12] His debut solo single "Strip That Down", featuring Quavo and co-written with Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac, was released on 19 May 2017,[80] and sent to U.S. contemporary hit radio on 23 May.[81] The song was a commercial success, reaching number ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the UK Singles Chart. Payne later released the single "Bedroom Floor"[82] and a collaboration with Zedd, "Get Low".[83] Regarding his forthcoming debut album, Payne stated:

It's very eclectic. It's more like my playlist album; my favorite playlist of songs that I have made over the past year. So, some slow jams, there's a couple of dance songs on there, with some R&B stuff. So there's a lot – it's a lot of different stuff.[84]

In January 2018, Payne and Rita Ora released the single "For You" from the soundtrack of the film Fifty Shades Freed.[85] In April 2018, Payne released "Familiar" with J Balvin.[86] He announced his debut album would be released on 14 September 2018.[87] On 30 March 2018, Payne performed in front of more than 100,000 people during a free concert at Global Village 2018 in Dubai.[88][89] He released his first extended play, First Time,[90] which features a collaboration with French Montana of the same name, on 24 August 2018.[91] Prior to the EP's release, Payne announced that he was putting off his album to make some adjustments to it.[92] He contributed vocals on Jonas Blue's song "Polaroid", along with Lennon Stella, released on 5 October 2018.[93]

Payne released the song "Stack It Up", featuring American rapper A Boogie wit da Hoodie, on 18 September 2019. After its release, Payne revealed that his album was "finished" and would more likely be released in 2020,[94] although in October, the album, LP1, was confirmed for a 6 December 2019 release date.[95] He released "All I Want (For Christmas)" on 25 October as the first track from the album.[96] It was released to mixed to negative reviews, and debuted at number 17 on the UK Albums Chart and number 111 on the Billboard 200. In April 2020, Payne collaborated with Alesso and released the song "Midnight" to positive reviews.[97][98] The same month, Payne began a weekly YouTube series.[99][100] In July, he announced he would be launching The LP Show, a livestream series, with "Act 1" being a livestreamed concert.[101][102] On 30 October 2020, Payne released "Naughty List", a Christmas single featuring Dixie D'Amelio.[103] In August 2021, Payne released the single "Sunshine", which was featured in the film Ron's Gone Wrong.[104]

2023–2024: Planned second studio album

In May 2023, Payne revealed he was working on his second album, which he claimed to have more creative control over than he did his debut album.[105] He scheduled his first solo tour dates for Latin America to take place in September 2023. He postponed the tour after he was hospitalised in August 2023 with a kidney infection.[106] Payne returned to music with the single "Teardrops", which was released on 1 March 2024.[107][108] The single was co-written with NSYNC member JC Chasez.[109][110] "Teardrops" reached number 39 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart.[111]

Artistry

On One Direction's later three albums, especially Four, Payne became a "prolific co-writer" with over 30 credits total,[112] second only to Louis Tomlinson, with whom he frequently collaborated. Where Tomlinson was known for his lyricism, Payne had a penchant for coming up with melodies.[113]

Payne was a pop[114] and R&B[115] singer who explored other genres including electronic music.[116] He cited Chris Brown,[117] Pharrell Williams,[118] Justin Timberlake,[119] and Usher as major musical influences.[120] Payne stated "The person who has inspired me most is Pharrell Williams who I worked with a while back. I got talking to his producer recently and asked him what Pharrell was like when he was younger, and he said to me that when he was my age he couldn't press a note on a keyboard. And that was amazing to me because at 22 I thought I was too old to learn guitar."[121] His first exposure to rock music was through Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory with "In the End" as they were the gateway for him to listen to other types of music outside of what he would typically listen to as a child. Payne would label "In the End" as one of the most important songs of his life.[122]

Payne was pro-choice. In May 2019, amidst anti-abortion legislation passed in Alabama, Payne stated that they were "completely taking away the rights of women and the ownership of the bodies that belong to them" and that "us as men never have to go through that so how can we even comment or decide what women should or shouldn't go through", also adding "here was me thinking it was supposed to be the land of the free it all looks very tied up from where I'm standing".[150] In May 2020, Payne expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement and encouraged fans to educate themselves and donate. From 2010 to late 2012, Payne dated then-X Factor dancer Danielle Peazer.[155] From 2013 to 2015, he was in a relationship with a childhood friend, Sophia Smith.[156] In 2016, he started dating Cheryl;[157] they had one son who was born on 22 March 2017.[158][159] Their relationship ended in 2018.[160] In early 2019, he dated British model and actress Naomi Campbell.[161][162]

Payne began dating model Maya Henry in 2019; they became engaged in August 2020.[163] By June 2021, Payne and Henry had separated.[164] The couple reunited that year and became engaged again.[165][166] In May 2022, the couple ended their engagement for the second time.[167] From October 2022 until his death on 16 October 2024, he had been in a relationship with influencer Kate Cassidy.[168][169][170][171] Payne's net worth was estimated at £47 million in 2020.[172] Payne owned homes in Malibu, California, and Surrey, but listed them for sale in early 2020 and 2021, respectively.[173][174]

Payne was a supporter of the football team West Bromwich Albion.[175]

Health

Payne had spoken about struggling with alcoholism since the peak of One Direction's success. More specifically, he mentioned being locked in hotel rooms with a mini-bar between gigs.[176] Payne also discussed his struggles with suicidal ideation. In May 2023, he stated that he had been sober for over three months, and in July he shared a video expanding on this, sharing he spent 100 days in a rehab facility in Louisiana.[177][178][179] Payne received an ADHD diagnosis as an adult.[180] In August 2023, he was hospitalised with a kidney infection.[106]

On 1 June 2022, he was interviewed by Logan Paul for his podcast series, with Payne recording while intoxicated. Payne said that One Direction originated with a promise that Simon Cowell had made to him; Payne had previously appeared on the show and Cowell purportedly pledged to "make it work" should he return. He also discussed former fellow member Zayn Malik's family life and stated, "There's many reasons why I dislike Zayn and there's many reasons why I'll always, always be on his side".[181] He subsequently clarified his remarks on Malik and apologised.[182]

Death

On 16 October 2024, Payne died after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of 31.[183][184][185] Police went to the hotel following an emergency call from the hotel manager, who reported "an aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol".[183][186] The manager indicated in the call that "when he is conscious he is destroying the entire room and we need you to send someone", noting that the man's life was at risk due to the room having a balcony.[186][187] Payne fell from the balcony shortly after emergency services arrived.[188] His death was confirmed at 5:11 p.m. Argentina Time (UTC−03:00).[183][189] The emergency medical team that arrived at the hotel reported a "cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries" that led to Payne's immediate death.[185][190]

Alberto Crescenti, director of Buenos Aires' public emergency medical service, announced Payne's death on the Argentine news channel TN, stating that the fall was from a height of approximately 13 to 14 metres (43 to 46 ft) and that Payne sustained "very serious injuries incompatible with life", leaving "no possibility of resuscitation".[183][187] Crescenti declined to comment on whether the death was a suicide or an accident.[187][191] Pablo Policicchio, communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, stated that Payne "had jumped from the balcony of his room".[187][192] The office did not respond to follow-up questions regarding the claim and directed the reporters to the prosecutor's office.[193] The forensic experts later reported that Payne "did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself" and that he "could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness".[194][195]

Authorities opened an investigation into Payne's death and conducted a post-mortem.[187] Police said that several medications and energy supplements were found in his room, including clonazepam, and that a whiskey bottle was found in the courtyard where his body was recovered.[196] Initial post-mortem examination indicated that Payne died from internal and external haemorrhages and multiple traumatic injuries.[197] The forensic experts reported 25 injuries caused by the fall and stated that Payne's traumatic brain injuries were "enough to cause death", with the bleeding in his head and upper body also contributing to his death. The examination found no signs of a fight and noted that Payne was alone in the room at the time of his death.[198][199]

American tabloid website TMZ obtained photographs of Payne's corpse and published cropped images that showed his arm and waist.[200][201] Their decision to publish the photos was criticised by a number of fans and public figures, prompting the outlet to remove the images.[202]

Aftermath

Payne's family released a statement shortly after his death, stating that they were heartbroken and that Payne would live forever in their hearts, and asking for privacy as they supported each other.[203] Payne's father Geoff and One Direction's former head of security Paul Higgins arrived in Buenos Aires on 18 October.[204] His former partner Cheryl issued a public request for consideration and dignity, fearing their son could potentially access "the abhorrent reports and media exploitation" around his father's death later in life.[205] Payne's One Direction bandmates Horan, Malik, Styles, and Tomlinson released a joint statement asking for time to speak more on his death and that they were grieving and processing it.[206] In addition, each of the four released their own statements of respect to Payne.[207][208][209][210] Styles' mother, Anne Twist, also paid respect to Payne through an Instagram post.[203][211][212] Malik later announced he would be postponing the US leg of his Stairway to the Sky Tour following news of Payne's death.[213]

Filming of auditions for series 18 of Britain's Got Talent—also produced by Cowell—was suspended out of respect, though resumed that weekend, with Cowell being absent for some episodes.[214][215] Cowell himself paid tribute two days after Payne's death.[216] UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer released a statement mourning Payne and mentioning One Direction's "huge impact on many millions of fans around the world".[217] Musicians across the world paid tribute to Payne.[218] A number of public figures, including Sharon Osbourne, Rebecca Ferguson and Bruce Springsteen, raised concerns about the music industry, media, and adolescent fame in their commemorations.[219][220][221] One Direction's X Factor mentor Robbie Williams, relating Payne's struggles to his own, made a plea for compassion, saying, "We don't know what's going on in people's lives".[222][223] Wolverhampton councillor Simon Bennett said Payne should posthumously receive the Freedom of the City honour.[224] Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. and West Bromwich Albion paid tributes to Payne.[225][226]

Shortly after his death, fans of the singer and One Direction gathered outside the hotel before giving a standing ovation as the van carrying Payne's body was driven away. The group then lit candles and wept before dispersing.[227] Payne's father Geoff visited the memorial upon arriving in Buenos Aires.[228] Fans also gathered to light candles in Mexico City on 17 October, a service was held in Copenhagen, while written notes were left at London's Hard Rock Cafe where the telephone box featured on the cover art of Take Me Home is on display.[229] Fans also gathered at Clevedon Pier, where One Direction filmed the music video for You & I to lay flowers at the One Direction plaque, which was installed to commemorate the filming of the music video.[230] The pier's management also issued a statement of condolence.[231]

A vigil was held at the Lady Wulfrun statue at St Peter's Collegiate Church on 18 October.[232] A fan memorial took place at Hyde Park on 20 October,[233] as well as in other UK cities over the weekend.[234] Further memorials were held in cities across the world,[235][236][237] including in New York's Washington Square Park.[238]

Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul. I first met Liam when he was 16 and I was 18, I was instantly amazed by his voice but more importantly as time went on I got a chance to see the kind brother I'd longed all my life for. Liam was an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody, we often spoke of getting back in the studio together to try and recreate the writing chemistry we had built up in the band. And for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam. A message to you Liam if you're listening, I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I'm really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye. I'm so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours , reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I'd have with you for life. I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it wasn't to be. I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was. I wish I got chance to say goodbye and tell you one more time how much I loved you. Payno, my boy, one of my best friends, my brother, I love you mate. Sleep well X" – via Instagram.
