Dr. Mukul M. Sangma (born 20 April 1965) is an Indian politician and a leader of the Indian National Congress party in Meghalaya state. He is the current Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

Early life

Dr. Mukul M. Sangma was born on April 20, 1965 at Chengkompara village in the present day South West Garo Hills district to Binoy Bhushan M Marak and Roshana Begum. He completed his school education from the Government High School in Ampati in 1982 and passed his pre-university examination in Science from St. Anthony's College in Shillong in 1984.[1] He graduated in medicine from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal in 1989. While studying, he occupied a number of positions in the governing body of the Students Council of RIMS. In 1991, he joined as a medical and health officer at Zikzak Public Health Centre.[2]

Political career

Sangma joined active politics in 1993, when he was elected to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from Ampatigiri constituency as an independent candidate. He was appointed chairman of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation.[2] He was re-elected to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from Ampatigiri constituency in 1998, 2003 and 2008 as an Indian National Congress candidate.

In 2003, he became the home and education minister of the Meghalaya government led by Chief Minister D. D. Lapang. On 11 April 2005, he was appointed the deputy chief minister of Meghalaya.[3] But he was forced to resign on 7 October 2005 after five persons at Williamnagar in East Garo Hills district and four persons at Tura in West Garo Hills district were killed and more than 100 persons were injured in the police and Central Reserve Police Force firing on 30 September 2005, during an agitation against a state-level committee's recommendations on restructuring of the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education (MBOSE).[4][5]

In 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he was the INC's candidate from the Tura constituency in Meghalaya. He was pitched against veteran leader P. A. Sangma who was contesting on a TMC ticket after falling out with Sharad Pawar's NCP over the foreign origin issue. Mukul lost to the Garo strongman by over 72,000 votes.

On 13 May 2009, he again became the deputy chief minister of the Indian National Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government in Meghalaya led by Chief Minister D. D. Lapang.[6][7] After D. D. Lapang resigned on 19 April 2010, he became the Chief Minister of Meghalaya on 20 April 2010.[5]
