Sushant Singh Rajput is an Indian actor.[2] He had a starring role in the soap opera Pavitra Rishta, and later participated in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4. Rajput made his film debut as one of the three male leads in Abhishek Kapoor's drama Kai Po Che! (2013). He went on to star in the romantic comedy Shuddh Desi Romance (2013) and played the titular detective in the thriller Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015), both of which were produced by Yash Raj Films.

Early life and background

Rajput was born in Patna, Bihar where his father worked as a government official.[3][4][5] His ancestral village is Maldiha in Purnia district.[6] His family moved to New Delhi in early 2000s and have been based there ever since. Rajput has four sisters with him being the youngest in the family.[7] One of his sisters, Mitu Singh is a state-level cricketer.[8] One of Sushant's sisters Shweta Singh Kirti lives in the US, two in Delhi and one in Chandigarh.[9] He went to school in St. Karen's High School in Patna and Kulachi Hansraj Model School in New Delhi. He was studying Mechanical Engineering at the Delhi College of Engineering (now known as Delhi Technological University)

As a student of Davar, Rajput was chosen to be a part of the troupe that went on to perform in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the group of background dancers at the 51st Filmfare Awards. After moving to Mumbai, he continued in theatre during this period and was a member of Nadira Babbar's Ekjute theatre group.[10] He also took Barry John's drama classes and found his passion for acting saying, "I found the experience liberating. I realised I could communicate with the audience. I knew I wanted to do this forever."[5]

Career

Television (2008–12)

In 2008, Rajput was spotted by Balaji Telefilms' casting team in one of his plays and was asked to audition. He landed the role of Preet Juneja in Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil. His character was killed in the show but came back for the series finale as a spirit, looking at his family celebrate after going through difficult times.[citation needed]

In June 2009 Rajput began starring in Pavitra Rishta as Manav Deshmuk, very serious and mature, working as a mechanic to help support his family.

In May 2010, he joined the dance reality show Zara Nachke Dikha 2 where he was a part of the Mast Kalandar Boys Team. Rajput continued with shooting for both Pavitra Rishta and Zara Nachke Dikha 2. On the "Mother's Day Special" episode, his team dedicated a performance to his mother, who had died.[11] In December 2010, he participated in another dance-based reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 where he was paired with choreographer Shampa Sonthalia.[12] In October 2011, Rajput decided to quit Pavitra Rishta to pursue a film-making course abroad.

Film (2013–present)

Rajput auditioned for Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che! and became one of the three leads. The movie was released on 22 February 2013 and has been a critical and a commercial success.[13] Critic Rajeev Masand wrote, "But it's Sushant Singh Rajput, making his film debut as Ishaan, who it's hard to take your eyes off. The actor has an indescribable presence, and it's clear from his confidence and distinct likability that a star is born."[14] One India Entertainment reports, "Sushant Singh Rajput makes a brilliant and effortless debut with Kai Po Che".

Rajput's second movie was Shuddh Desi Romance, directed by Maneesh Sharma. Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama praised Rajput's performance, saying "After leaving a tremendous impression in his first Hindi outing, Sushant Singh Rajput... brings a lot of freshness with his unpretentious and spontaneous act."[15] Sukanya Verma from Rediff stated, "After a dynamic debut in Kai Po Che!, Rajput channelises his abundant energy to convey the childlike ineptitude of a man who wears his heart on a sleeve."[16]

Rajput has a small role in Rajkumar Hirani's film PK.[17][18] Rajput was signed to portray Byomkesh Bakshi in director Dibakar Banerjee's film, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!.[19] He is also slated to star in Shekhar Kapur's futuristic film, Paani.[20] He featured in the advertisement of Nestle Munch which became famous throughout India .

Personal life

Rajput with his fiancée Ankita Lokhande

Rajput started his career as a backup dancer who performed at the Filmfare Awards many times. While he was performing, Balaji Films spotted him and offered him a television role.[5]

Rajput is engaged to Ankita Lokhande, his co-star from Pavitra Rishta.[21] Rajput proposed to her on national television in February 2011 on the dance show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4. He has said that they plan to get married very soon.
