On 10 January 2022, it was proposed that this article be moved to African-American candidates for president of the United States. The result of the discussion was no consensus.

Article history[edit]

This article was spun off from the history of the Black president in popular culture article and there are versions of this article that are much more expansive. There was a lot of content about theorizing in regards to speculation about certain former presidents having African American ancestors for example. It has only been a few. The article List of African-American United States presidential and vice presidential candidates has a fuller accounting of mostly minor third-party candidates and independents who never made much impact on the national campaigns or elections.--Parkwells (talk) 19:56, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well it has been a few "serious" candidates from major parties, but there have been several candidatse. I can think of several off the top of my head. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Alan Keyes, Barack Obama, Shirley Chisholm and then there were candidates from smaller parties. So I agree it needs to be expanded. For some reason, despite the broad name of the article, the lede was narrowed to major party candidates a while ago [1].

I agree an article on the subject need not address every candidate found in the List. However, it seems odd to exclude information about the first candidate on a ballot, first candidate of an established party, and candidates on the ballot in enough states to theoretically win the election. I'm not sure why Chisholm is said to be the first Democratic Party candidate; it seems to be Channing E. Phillips who was. Possibly subsequent major primary candidates for the major parties should be included as well. Marginal primary candidates for major parties, primary candidates for minor parties, and minor party candidates not on the ballot in enough states to theoretically win would still be excluded. This would continue to maintain a reasonable length for the article.

Also, is there any reason why there's not a link to Black president in popular culture (United States)? That would seem to be fine as a See also, or if there's some reliable source(s) on the effect of fictional candidates on having/voting for real candidates, it could go there. There's also some info missing about Morrison's followup to her original statement.

– I've already nominated the relevant categories a few weeks ago as seen here. My basic premise is that while the capitalization could be permissible within the scope of MOS:JOBTITLES (the noun phrase is not modified with an article), I contend that candidates inherently run for offices, not for titles. As the manual of style points out, titles may be capitalized, but offices are common nouns and should be lowercase. So in keeping with the spirit of MOS:JOBTITLES, I would recommend moving these pages accordingly. Woko Sapien (talk) 18:19, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose it looks wrong -- there's an effort to always lowercase "president" but it doesn't work here. Also, I disagree with I contend that candidates inherently run for offices, not for titles - at least when dealing with unlikely candidates for President of the United States many of them are running for the title.
