block IP/rangeblock?

Can anything be done about Jessica Liao aside from whack-a-mole? tedder (talk) 04:36, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I can. J.delanoygabsadds 04:41, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

More Mustapha khalid

Just so you know (since you did the SPI), I've also blocked Moonhacker (talk · contribs · block log) and Phil997 (talk · contribs · block log) as socks of User:Mustapha khalid. I'll check that range again in a couple days for any new accounts, as it looks like a very very dynamic range and I just gave someone an IPBE to avoid the autoblocks we caused. Yellow Star

Congratulations, J.delanoy! Within the past nine days, you received the Orange Star and the Red Star for being hard working, kind to others, and for being an excellent user in general. You've now been chosen to receive the next higher up award, the Yellow Star. This makes you eligible for the shiniest award of all, the Blue Star. A record of this award will always be kept at User:Meaghan/Shining Stars. Enjoy! Meaghan the vanilla twilight 01:06, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello! I notified you a year ago for forgetting to change your time zone UBX. If I'm correct, you forgot to do it again last month. Perhaps you'll need to fix it, eh? Schfifty3 02:36, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

He has a sock, which was blocked independently before I looked. J.delanoygabsadds 07:37, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Hi J.Delanoy. I just wanted to say that I harbour no hard feelings over the events of the last 24 hours. I know how it must have looked from your side, and can see why you made the choices you did. I was wondering, however, if there's a forum for discussing how to handle sockpuppet investigations where large institutions with thousands of users are involved. As good as the checkuser process normally is, there are still times where it returns a false positive, and I would like to help reduce the likelihood that those false positives lead to innocent editors being indef-blocked. I'd appreciate your feedback on the matter. Thank you, Throwaway85 (talk) 01:18, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
As per User:AniMate, I've started a discussion on the matter here. I would welcome your input on the subject, as you have far more experience in these matters than I. Throwaway85 (talk) 03:18, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
There is no systematic way to remove or lessen the number of false positives. Every checkuser case is absolutely and utterly unique; even if the same case is run by different checkusers, they will often come to different conclusions, or some may find things that others do not. With so much variance, I doubt that any coherent method to approach such things could be found. And let me assure you that your case is far, far less complicated than many that I deal with. Your university has, including IPs, maybe a few hundred editors within the last three months. I very, very frequently deal with ranges that had upwards of five thousand editors in three months. And it is not unheard of to find places with more than five thousand in one month. J.delanoygabsadds 04:33, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Let it never be suggested that I envy your position. I appreciate the complexities of the matter and, once again, bare you no ill will. I may well have made the same decision in your position. Rather than attempting to amend policy, I'm more trying to brainstorm ways of reducing the occurrence of incidents such as this in the future. I would still appreciate any input you may have in regards to this, even if you merely restate your beliefs above. The more people contribute, the better chance we have of arriving at a conclusion, be it to recommend a change or stick with the status quo. Thanks again. Throwaway85 (talk) 04:38, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Userpage protection

Thanks for the offer to protect my userpage; Tedder has now protected it for a week, so I think we might as well just wait and see. Do you think it would be appropriate to semi-protect my talk page for a similar period? I understand that limiting access to talk pages is generally not a good idea, but the amount of work that the attacker creates for other editors is getting pretty large. Hullaballoo Wolfowitz (talk) 16:18, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Done (and removed repeat section here). Tan | 39 16:19, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

My brain has just woke up and I'm keen to learn. Why did you protect User talk:64.231.201.128 ? Cheers Materialscientist (talk) 22:55, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

He was rangeblocked, and he was attempting to get people to block him, since in the past, a block on a single IP would override a rangeblock, and he would not be hardblocked, as his range is. To facilitate this, he was deliberately triggering an abuse filter that MrZ-man's bot reports to the bot AIV. I reblocked his range without talk page access. J.delanoygabsadds 23:08, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Another naive question (I am a newbie admin). Is there any easy way to see a nearby rangeblock before blocking a single IP? And another, if I strongly suspect an IP comes from an open proxy (from a unique edit pattern), should I just long-term block that IP or better do something else? Materialscientist (talk) 23:15, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
On the bottom of any IP's talk page, there is a list of links. If you click on "rangeblock finder", it will show a list of all blocks on the IP, including direct and range blocks. Before blocking an IP as a proxy, you should probably have someone use a proxy checking tool check to see if it is a proxy, or check yourself. J.delanoygabsadds 23:25, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Heads up

Hi, J.delanoy. This is a courtesy notice informing you that your name has been mentioned at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Shopping for an appropriate forum. I apologize for the late notification, since you were only mentioned in passing and I didn't expect this to involve you. However, it now appears that User:Valerius Tygart is contesting your checkuser results in his Sockpuppet Investigation. He claims that he has never deceptively or abusively used sockpuppetry, which is at odds with your findings that (Valerius Tygart = Dogwood123 = 140.139.35.250); in light of this edit where one of his socks denies being another one of his socks. Your comments would be welcome. Xenophrenic (talk) 05:29, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi, J. I think I successfully blocked User:74.249.96.0/19 as Bambifan101's sole remaining BellSouth range and I've also filed a complaint directly with AT&T. Might I impose on you to double-check whether or not I properly blocked the range and to please correct my error if I did it wrong? Mostly, his ranges show up on the WHOIS as like a /12 or a /13, so I don't know. I am almost certain he has access to more ranges than just that. Bellsouth is very annoying. J.delanoygabsadds 16:07, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Sock-puppetry in Persian people

Have you also checked User:SorenShadow, User:Danz23 and User:R1000R1000? They all have edit-warred over that page and they all show the same edit pattern. Alefbe (talk) 06:38, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Dear J.delanoy, could you please check this? I concur that looks like [User:Danz23]] and User:SorenShadow are related to the sock-puppets that you blocked earlier. What's more frustrating is that one of these sock puppets requested protection for Persian people, and the page has been locked on the sock puppets' OR/POV version. --Kurdo777 (talk) 16:32, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Adobe Systems founders

You reverted changes I made to the list of founders of 'Adobe Systems', to 'Charles Geschke' and by now probably to 'John Warnock'. I forget the word you used but essentially you categorized them as vandalism because they are not useful additions. I believe truth and completeness are appropriate edits. It is a fact that Dan Putman was a cofounder of Adobe Systems. Therefore any listing of Adobe founders should include him. Omission, purposeful or not, is not acceptable.

Oh, come on.

Look, if what you're saying is that Cold Fusion is constantly overrun with disruptive socks of users who are either banned, should know better, or like to play sillybuggers, you're, no offense intended, behind the curve here. What exactly are editors supposed to do about this constant infestation? I complain at AE, they say "go complain at SPI." I complain at SPI they say "stop playing sillybuggers." Can I just declare all transparent sockpuppets to be banned from the article on my authority as someone who can revert them? Hipocrite (talk) 22:25, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Works for me. Please don't violate their privacy. I'll just assume this person is aware they are banned from Cold Fusion. Hipocrite (talk) 22:31, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
I take your comments at the WP:SPI case to indicate that the editors in question are in fact using multiple accounts. Given the contentious history of cold fusion, which has been marked by significant editing abuses and discretionary sanctions, I am strongly inclined to block or otherwise restrict Dual Use (talk · contribs) on that basis alone. We've had more than enough problems with that article to insist that people restrict themselves to one account as a most basic matter of fairness to other editors. If there is a "master" account, then they should be warned and/or sanctioned as well, but obviously that is a checkuser matter. MastCell Talk 23:02, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
I couldn't find any obvious masters. If you know of a CU with more experience in cold fusion issues, you may want to ask them to take a look. J.delanoygabsadds 23:08, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
I apologize if I am interfering, but I just wanted to say that if the Belgian known as Pcarbonn has edited the cold fusion talk page before Dec 15, he violated the ArbCom remedies for his case. 209.253.120.236 (talk) 05:37, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Wondering if you could do a quick c/u on User:Cremepuff222, weird behaviour going on

As per this AN/I thread, there's some concern that Cremepuff's account may have been compromised. They have recently made some bizzare edits that smack of immature trolldom, which is concerning for an account with an admin bit. If you could check and see if the account has been editting from any blatantly unfamiliar IPs, that would give us an idea of how to proceed. This isn't an emergency, as they recently blocked themselves (!), but it'd be nice to get an idea of what we're dealing with before the block expires. Thanks, Throwaway85 (talk) 10:11, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Note: There is also a request at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations#User:Cremepuff222, so you might want to check whether another CU has already done so and take care of that when fulfilling this request if not. Regards SoWhy 12:15, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

I am almost as sure as I can be. Same IP range, many of the confirmed socks listed on the SPI casepage edited from the same IPs as he did at the same time as he did (very unusual considering how dynamic his ISP is), and the user agents match. Also, DS has taken a disproportionate interest in EditorXXV and his socks, especially for someone with so few edits. J.delanoygabsadds 17:41, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
He is on the same IP range. Editor XXV came onto his radar after Decepticon got hit by an rangeblock that was placed on XXV. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 17:42, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
That still fails to explain why he edits from the same IP addresses at the same time as multiple vandals (both logged in and otherwise, mostly tagged as socks of EditorXXV) at the exact same time as the vandals do, when his range is dynamic enough that he rarely has the same IP for more than two days. J.delanoygabsadds 17:48, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
this is an interesting turn of events. Are you sure that DS is XXV?--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 17:49, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

I felt very strange about DS and his behaviour when he first appeared on my radar (for a newbie, he seemed too knowledgeable about WP) some time back and you'd noticed that I was the one who greeted him with a welcome tag. Then I got busy with work and some other article and totally forgot about him... only to come back a few weeks later to discover a duck, wth... as they say, a quack is a quack is a quack~! --Dave 1185 18:36, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

← *raises hand* Err... Katerenka spent three and a half years as an IP. Yes, some people who are too knowledgable are socks, but others just IPed their way through the wiki for a while. Decepticon even tried to pre-emptively counter accusations of sockpuppetry. From the last diff of his userpage: "Yes, I do know a lot about Wikipedia. Too much for a newbie, you might think. He's a sockpuppet, you may also think. Actually, this is just me following my rule of "read up on a website's history before you join it"." A fairly sane rule. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 18:41, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

I've reviewed this, and declined the unblock. The checkuser results show multiple instances of Shockwave alternating edits, on the same IP, a minute apart, with various now-blocked usernames. Whatever is going on here, it's abusive. --jpgordon::==( o ) 21:25, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Editor XXV

Since you were the CU handling the user's case, I think you should know about this quote from ravage101 (a sock of his), "I'm here until my rangeblock at EN expires", on Simple English Wikipedia's version of AIV (diff available). Also, he linked himself to MascotGuy. Griffinofwales (talk) 20:59, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Retirement/Removal of User Privileges

Hello. I'm officially retiring from Wikipedia and to protect the project, I think it would be best if my accountcreator and rollbacker privileges were removed. Thanks! The V-Man (Said · Done) 03:09, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Anon... spammer

CambridgeBayWeather and I are a bit confused over the anon... spammer blocks, so perhaps you know. I thought they were mostly from open proxies so I blocked as open proxies. Is that spammer usually using open proxies and should be blocked as such for what seems to be the standard ProcseeBot length of two months or a more plain vanilla valid block of 24 hours? -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 08:09, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

He normally uses proxies. However, my js blocking tool does not have a proxyblock option, and with this sort of thing speed is essential, so I was just blocking temporarily until the attack died down. Also, it is extremely late here, so late I would almost call it very early. I don't have time to deal with them en masse, so I was just going to reblock tomorrow later today. If you want to go through my log and reblock, please do. J.delanoygabsadds 08:16, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
I figured that speed was essential. Thanks for the confirmation on the proxy use. I'll leave the fun of reblocking up to you. =) Is normal proxy blocking length two months? -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 08:26, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
I usually do a year, or three-to-five if it was already blocked as a proxy previously. ProcseeBot uses two months because it's a bot. J.delanoygabsadds 08:28, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Okay. Thanks. No go to sleep! =) -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 08:30, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Rangeblock question

These IP ranges:

64.231.11.0/24 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · block user · block log)
64.231.10.0/24 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · block user · block log)
69.156.124.0/22 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · block user · block log)

Have been involved in harassment of another user per the edit filter log, 64.231.10.0/24 is already blocked but the other 2 are not. I'm asking because would there be collateral damage from the 2 that are not blocked. Thanks. Momo san Gespräch 18:13, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

I noticed you blocked this user a few moments ago. From his talk page it appears he is a sock. I think a checkuser is needed to flush out the other accounts and block those as well, so he can't do any further harm. - NeutralHomerTalk05:54, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Pleae explain this revert

Please explain this revert: [11]

That section is for me alone to build a defence case, not for other parties to post their comments. Please revert this edit. Betty Logan (talk) 19:28, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Please explain why you object to this comment, and not the other ones above made by another user in "your" section. J.delanoygabsadds 19:29, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
I have moved the comment to a separate section. Please do not remove the edits of any user at SPI without first consulting a clerk or a checkuser. NW (Talk) 19:38, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
The comments of the other user contributed to my defence in ascertainig that my edits were to improve and source the article. It is relevant in establishing my motive for editing the article and differentiating my edits from those of the editor I am accused of being. I am sorry if I should not have removed the comments, but they shouldn't have been posted there in the first place. It breaks the rhythm of my defence, and I have a right to present my case uninterrupted. Betty Logan (talk) 19:46, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

John254 is back

Kudos to Alison and J.delanoy for their huge, immensely damaging rangeblock of all at&t DSL IPs in the entire San Francisco Bay Area [12] [13]. What was never considered at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/John254, however, was that I can edit right through their rangeblock. Nice try :) StephenBrown167 (talk) 01:20, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

When I try to edit without logging onto my real WP account, I either get messages that I am blocked. I just recently got the message from this user "The recent edit you made to the page Salvadoran Civil War has been reverted, as it appears to be unconstructive", an edit I never ever did. I think that too wide a range of IPs is being blocked.--WickerGuy (talk) 03:15, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Judging by the block log, it was long term abuse (probably a reincarnation of a banned user or something). –Juliancolton | Talk 22:25, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
