Cinema of Japan

This may surprise you, but I completely agree with you. You say it runs the risk of losing its gist, but I can't even find one. The whole article (except for the Silent era section) is basically a sucession of small paragraphs on notable directors and the notable films they directed, sprinkled with some major international award they have won. I was looking around for other cinema by country articles and just seeing the Cinema of Brazil article, which is smaller and still has a lot to improve, I could see the problems with the cinema of Japan article. They have sections on important and/or influential studios, they mention the policy of the various governments and how that afected film prodution, they mention movements or genres specific to the country and contextualize them, explaining the circunstances in which the were created. Basically, there is some overall structure to the article that makes it work as a whole. Cinema of Japan doesn't have that. I added the awards because there seemed to be alot of notable, important films not being mentioned but that only adds to the problems I mentioned. If you look at the winners for the Blue Ribbon Awards and the Mainichi Film Awards in the 50s, only two or three of them are different! I thought about integrating the awards with the already existing text but, again, it would only make the problem worse. Maybe it would be better to have all the complete information about Best Film winners at Japanese awards in the notes field of the Japanese films by year articles and then only include some of that information in the main article if it is warranted. I am not used to working on big, complicated articles, so I don't really know how to help make the article better, but that needs to be done, if not by me or you, by someone, because Japanese cinema deserves a much better article. You can make an argument that she is an important person, but to argue that a film about her is such an important film that it is the only one to be cited in the lede of the article needs a lot more documentation: such as awards, box office, etc. in Japan. Can you prove this is the most significant thing this company has ever done? (I would ask the same of the Jeanne Calment note you put in the lede in the Tokuma Shoten article. Again, in the least, this does not belong in the lede, but later on in the article.) As a whole, Wikipedia articles are bad when they just become lists of what various individuals think are important, often without citation, and lack cause and effect or narrative flow.--Michitaro (talk) 07:46, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Mr.Michitaro! Thank you very much for adding more information on my contribution to "Hachiko Monogatari". I am an Indian and love to watch films. I am an animal lover especially dogs. I was deeply moved to see the greatest dog movie ever made and that prompted me to write about this Japanese classic in wikipedia, although I do not understand Japanese. Since I am new to this site, I unknowingly made some changes to Seijirō Kōyama, for which I am sorry. I do hope that this introduction will forge a new beginning in our friendship, which in turn will provide more contributions towards wikipedia, for many more years to come.

I could try to help with the sources when possible. Some of the specific in-text citations of old documents (like the Chōya Kyūbun Hōkō for the Sendai Domain deaths) I simplified because there was no citation of specific editions or page numbers. Yaocho

Hi. Yes, I am well aware that yaocho does not only imply match-fixing in sumo. However, I surmised that the average English speaker who had heard the word yaocho in the last year would have heard it in reference to sumo, and might look the word up expecting to see information about match-fixing in sumo. I do see your point. It would be better to have a short blurb about what yaocho means and then a link to the match-fixing article. For now I will put yaocho back as a redirect to match-fixing in general until I can come up with a better alternative, or you may do so if you like. FourTildes (talk) 02:40, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Good catch - Sumie Sakai should probably be reverted to This version and Vilza Fenz should be deleted. I can find no references to any of the names claimed in the article and considering I was pretty active in watching wrestling during the 1999-2002 time period when the article claims that this person wrestled in ECW and WWE, I have never heard of this person.-Drdisque (talk) 04:01, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

I noticed the request had been there for a while and the user had not edited recently (ie. in the last hour or so), so I removed the request. Also, I didn't see anything in the user's recent edits that looked like obvious vandalism (basically the user was changing minor stuff in wrestling-related articles) although I admit I could be wrong about it because I do not know a lot about specific wrestlers and how they act. AIV is generally only used in cases where the vandalism is obvious and/or the user does not stop vandalising after being warned several times. If you want, you are more than welcome to relist the user there, but I didn't see anything that looked like obvious vandalism in the user's recent edits. Regards. Mainichi Film Award

Hello

Yes, this source mentions that "毎日映画コンクールの歴史は戦前の1935年にまで遡ること出来る" (The roots of the Mainichi Film Award may be traced back to the War, all the way to 1935). Please review article on Late Spring

I would be honored to invite you, as an obviously very knowledgeable person on Japanese film and a participant in the Japanese Cinema Task Force, to review the article I have edited on Yasujiro Ozu's Late Spring. I have worked on the article for about eight months, beginning on June 12, 2011. Although the article is quite long, I believe that the importance of Late Spring both within Ozu's career and within the history of Japanese film more than justifies the length. Indeed, there is quite a bit of detail that I felt I had to omit.

(One of the reasons I am approaching you is that the first two things I spotted on your "Talk" page were DYK references to Fumio Kamei and Akira Iwasaki, two important figures in Japanese film history who are both discussed in Peter B. High's excellent book The Imperial Screen.)

I wanted the reader with little or no knowledge of Japanese film history to understand: a) the significance of the shomingeki genre and the importance of Ozu to that genre; b) the pressures on filmmakers during the American Occupation and its censorship, and how Ozu dealt with those pressures; c) the central importance of both the screenwriter Kôgo Noda and the actress Setsuko Hara on this film and on the director's late period films in general; d) the importance of the theme of tradition versus modernity in this film; e) the central importance to the movie of the Noh play scene (which actually gave the film its title); f) Ozu's complex and subtle approach to characterization, and the relationship of the characters to traditional archetypes (e.g., the patriarchal father); g) the uniqueness of Ozu's visual style; and h) the ambiguous nature of what he achieved, which is open to many (and contradictory) interpretations.

What I'd like to request that you do is: a) suggest possible improvements to the article and b) possibly support my attempt to promote the article as a Featured Article, which I intend to do quite soon.

I agree with you that there are "a lot of problems with Japanese-film related pages on Wikipedia." I hope that I can get the article on Late Spring to the point where it sets some kind of standard for such a Wikipedia article.

inre Karma: The New Revolution

I agree with your assessment that the nominated article suffered from issues wwith tone and direction. It spent too much time dwelling on the filmmaker and the Zenji Museum. But after seeing the trimmed down version, and looking at available sources, I gave a hand in some copyediting of it myself. I am not concerned with sources seemingly promoting Buddism or Yoga or the Museum, just so long as they provide us with enough content about the film itself to write a neutral article. Sorry for your having to deal with the AFD angst of the author and major contributor, WP:User:Truth be known 888... but sometimes that is exactly the reaction from a newcomer who writes with his heart and not his head. Think he might benefit from being steered to WP:PRIMER or any other of the article creation pages? I'm afraid I had to decilne the BLPPROD here, because of a peculiarity in WP:BLPPROD#Nominating, the policy there considers unreliable sources such as IMDB as a sufficient reason to preclude nomination (not enough, if added after the fact, that you can remove the tag because of one, but enough to prevent nomination in the first place if it's already there.) As this is a procedural decline, it does not precluse proposing this for deletion via PROD, and of course AfD is a fine option as well. --joe decker^{talk to me} 17:51, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shaun Phillips (director)

Hello Mitchitaro,

I also do not agree with Josh Parris comment that there were no sources listed previously that listed Shaun Phillips by name. That simply isn't true. More than a few do and others list his production company (Artistic Perspective Entertainemt) by name in the videos themselves (often in the final credit/copywrite info).

I am relatively new to creating articles for Wikipedia and a bit slow in learning how to respond to requests from other editors, so I hope I am responding all requests in a timely and correct manner. You have marked an article I created yesterday for speedy deletion due to lack of sources. I am going as fast as I can to improve it with better sources. I have updated it today with at least a half dozen new sources - ALL listing the article subject Shaun Phillips by name. Please reconsider your desire to have this article deleted and I will continue to try and locate even more credible sources in the coming days.

I also believe that Artistic Perspective Entertainment should not be deleted as it is a production company credited with producing 4 DVD's and two short films featuring known celebrity A-List talent that can be, and have been verified as true. I would like to have this entry restored as I attempt to improve it.

Any advise or other assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

I can understand your desire to have this article as well as your hope to improve it. I did not mark your article for speedy deletion; it was only marked "proposed deletion". You declined that but only added one citation, the Film Threat one, that counts as a reliable source. If you do improve it by adding independent reliable sources, then I can withdraw the AfD. However, please closely read the section on reliable sources (WP:IRS) and on notability (WP:GNG) before that. I have looked at the sources you provided and most either fail to be reliable sources (because they are created by Phillips or his company) or do not mention him (i.e., all those articles on the fireman or the celebrities). Unless you can find substantive independent coverage of Phillips, he fails the notability criteria. The article on APE is another matter, but that was deleted by consensus, so unless you again can provide independent reliable sources that satisfy the notability requirements, you should refrain from recreating such an article. I have added more that just FilmTreat.com source. I added a Los Angeles radio station, official websites where the film is playing including it's advertised listed showing in 5 days at the 2012 Philadelphia Independent Film Festival and others. There were already links to international websites including PressBox.cc.uk. I am a fan of the entertainer Coco. I have her dvd's and Phillips is listed as director / producer on all of them. I have listed the IMDB listing for them which confirms this. I am not sure how else to source this fact. I will continue to look for more sources, but out of the 45+ sources currently listed for this article at least a third list Phillips by name. In addition, the 4 dvd's and 2 short films listed all featured known celebrity talent and were distributed internationally. Why is all of this not being considered noteworthy? What would it take to be noteworthy in your eyes? Do please read the pages on sourcing and notability closely. Mere listings of the film or a mention of the name here and there is not sufficient. For instance, according to WP:GNG:

"Significant coverage" means that sources address the subject directly in detail, so no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention but it need not be the main topic of the source material.

So far, you have not a single article that discusses Phillips in detail that is produced by a reliable independent source. You only have the Film Threat article on the film, not on him. The "articles" from PressBox or Examiner.com--on which the radio article is based--are from sites that basically post press releases and are thus not independent sources. Note that even IMDb is not considered a reliable source on Wikipedia since it includes user-generated content. Phillips may have been involved in projects that included famous people, but notability is not necessarily inherited on Wikipedia: the subject must be shown to have independent notability. Looking again at WP:FILMMAKER, it is clear that Phillips does not clear criteria 1, 2 or 4. Perhaps your best chance is 3, but the Beatles documentary short just does not clear that hurdle so far. Phillips may have produced some work, but quantity does not decide things either, it is the notability. Please note that I do not go around Wikipedia hunting for articles to delete; in a number of AfD discussions I have saved articles that others had given up on (e.g., Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Makuhari_international_school or Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Princess_Kaoru_Nakamaru). I try to be neutral and objective about these issues. And so far, you have not convinced me Phillips is notable. Other editors will be hard to convince as well.
