Categories
[edit]Remember that everything's different with a category that you yourself have recently created. You'd have an easier time just using the move function, but if you feel like doing it this way, there's nothing wrong with it. Nyttend (talk) 13:35, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
- If it's not recently created, it ought to go through CFDS, if nothing else to let someone get a little input. This criterion only applies if the author of a category requests or agrees to renaming within 28 days of creating the category., to quote that page. Unless a page is up for deletion or otherwise has problems, G7 really shouldn't be used unless it's a comparatively recent creation. Nyttend (talk) 13:40, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi
[edit]Hi, Shawn. It's been a long time since our paths last crossed, and I sincerely wish it were under different circumstances. As an aside in the "General discussion" section of the pending RfA, you asked why my comment on OldEnglish's user talk page was not impermissible canvassing. Simple: OldEnglish is the primary nominator of the candidate and has already expressed his support of the candidate. As far as I am aware, there is no violation of WP:CANVASS when an RfA supporter and the RfA nominator discuss the status of the RfA on the nominator's talk page. Are you aware of another guideline that might apply? I think we ought to be focusing on some of the less-than-honorable conduct of at least one of the chief oppose voters, who seems to have trouble understanding both WP:CONSENSUS and WP:CANVASS, and how he biased the talk page discussion for which he is now attempting to hold the RfA candidate responsible for purported ignorance of policies and guidelines. Not pretty. Not pretty at all. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 16:54, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Hi. I don't remember our paths crossing before but your memory is better than mine, I'm sure. Thanks for the note. 18:14, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- I was just a newbie, and, well, you were larger-than-life "Shawn in Montreal." As I recently looked through old talk page discussions from mid-2009 when I started editing, I was shocked to see how high the attrition rate has been for the well-respected editors to whom I looked up when I started six years ago. I still remember you as one of the voices of reason from then. Cheers. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 18:27, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

[edit]No action needed on anybody's part, but I got a good laugh today and had to share: on The Globe and Mail website this afternoon, the very first Arts headline was "Soulpepper announces 2016 lineup"...AHEAD of "Jon Stewart signs four-year deal with HBO". Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Adryenn Ashley socks
[edit]See Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of TejaswaChaudhary (my first experience with this master). There should be many more socks. They are article creators, likely paid for that, judging from their articles (many still remain in drafts or mainspace). Materialscientist (talk) 22:08, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks @Materialscientist:. I sort of regretted not created an SPI for all the new socks before the edit history went bye-bye -- well, not really, it's kind of pain and I'm in no mood -- but all the socker would do is spawn more new accounts anyway. There were 3 by my count on the 3rd iteration of Adryenn Ashley, alone. Salting as you've done is the best course. thanks. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 22:21, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

- I know! How the heck did we get so many articles like this. How have the Afds been going, btw? Evenly split been keeps and deletes or...? Shawn in Montreal (talk) 21:15, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
- Re how things got this way, you can get a taste here [1] and here [2] and here [3]. Almost all the AfDs have led to redirection to an appropriate list, which is the way it should be. The key to all this is to understand that, in most cases, notability is a moot question, since even if they're notable there's nothing worth saying about them. That's where, as you picked up on so well, NOPAGE comes in, and thus the redirects. Why certain editors resist this so hard is difficult to say, but it seems to be revolve around the idea that these subjects "deserve" to have a standalone article, no matter how threadbare. They also seem to have the idea that "documenting" these extreme elders, here on Wikipedia, will be a resource for scientific research, which is of course nonsense. EEng (talk) 23:34, 3 December 2015 (UTC) p.s. I meant to mention that a very, very, very bad tone was set early in the Longevity michegas by a putative authority on the subject who insisted that spaces after periods and commas were a waste of paper and server space (I am not making this up) as well as... well, read it for yourself [4]. ArbCom was needed to get rid of this guy. EEng (talk) 03:12, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Canada Award
[edit]I did a little bit of digging into the Academy's "special award" press releases for the past few years, and while you're right that the Canada Award hasn't been presented since Screenies #1, something called the "Diversity Award" starts being presented as of #2. So while I haven't yet found a source which officially says this outright, it looks as if the Canada Award was simply renamed rather than being discontinued. Bearcat (talk) 16:43, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- I had the time handy, so I went ahead with it already. Since there seem to be other things in the world called "Diversity Award", I went with the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Diversity Award title. Bearcat (talk) 17:12, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

I finally did some work on an article about one of my favourite Canadian films. I had the honour of hosting Blake James a few years back at a showing of his film at the local air museum. the ills of animation
[edit]Got it fixed. {{ill}} actually has extra parameters to accommodate a situation like that, which just aren't as familiar because we don't have to use them very often — but the trick, if you're using that template where the English link will have to be disambiguated away from a different topic that already exists, is to go dab-title pipe French title pipe display text. I provisionally went with "animator" as the English dab since that's the list he's on, because I'm not that personally familiar with him to know whether a different one would be better, but it can still be changed if need be. Bearcat (talk) 16:36, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
- No, you're not going crazy. They did disappear somehow — not intentionally, trust me — so I restored them right away when I got your message. I'm actually going to work right now on converting the list to the table format that they should be following, so don't think you're going crazy again when you see that either :-) Bearcat (talk) 17:12, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Animated shorts
[edit]Well, of course notability does still depend on whether the article can be properly sourced or not. I wouldn't generally go ahead with an article if the only source I could find for anything at all about the film was its presence in a list of the award nominees, but as long as there are enough sources to say something substantive about a film I don't believe that a Genie/CSA nomination should count for less in the notability sweepstakes than an Oscar or BAFTA nomination does. I am a lot less confident about the craft staff (film editors, costume designers, cinematographers, sound engineers, etc.) being sourceable for much of anything beyond "award-nominated, the end" — even at the Oscar level, a lot of the articles that do exist about those people aren't much better than "award-nominated, the end" either — but as a rule the films are generally able to get over WP:GNG if we look carefully enough. Bearcat (talk) 22:16, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- Right, I think I agree with that completely. Oh, maybe I do think that a Genie nomination should count for less than an Oscar nom but regardless, most of these films can pass GNG, I agree. Anyway, BAM's there. That's one. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 02:51, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi there, I've done some work on this film article and after screening the film numerous times, I've found some problems with the information that was originally in the article. First of all, it appears to be a United Nations Film Board work, and was shot AFAIK, entirely in the United States at a summer camp in New York State, not India. The doctor in charge of medical care was likely from India but that is the only connection I can make to India. Please check over the article to see if I am right. ...and thanks for the barnstar! [edit]If he doesn't want to admit his affiliation there is not much we can do. But many information presented in his articles are misleading or non-relevant. E.g. Djuradj Vujcic is a member of the Canadian Association of Journalists. Voting member or non-voting (anybody can apply)? He is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the organization that is open to the general public. How is that relevant? His father Prvoslav Vujcic published 12 books in last 3 years, the name of the publisher is "UBC Canada Press". Those books were not published by the well-established UBC Press (University of British Columbia Press). It's probably an acronym for Urban Book Circle. Would be interesting to see if any of those books have ISBN number and if "UBC Canada Press" is registered publisher here in Canada. They are probably just PDF files published over the Internet.
RE his article about Urban Book Circle, what kind of society has an owner? If there is an owner - it is probably registered as a business. If it is registered at all. --N Jordan (talk) 00:39, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Student newspapers
[edit]Since the AFD discussion on Katie Nelson closed before I could answer (or even saw) your question, I just wanted to clarify for you. It's not that student newspapers are considered unreliable sources — it's that they're not notability-conferring sources. They can be used for some supplementary confirmation of facts after notability has already been covered off by enough better sourcing to satisfy WP:GNG, but they can't bring GNG in and of themselves because of their limited circulation and narrow intended audience. And the same goes for alt-weeklies like Now or The Georgia Straight as well: they're perfectly fine for verification of facts in an article that's already solidly sourced otherwise, but they can't help to carry whether the person passes GNG or not. A source can be perfectly reliable for verification of facts, but not useful toward establishing whether the person has the level of media coverage necessary to get a Wikipedia article — some types of sources can serve both purposes simultaneously, but others (IMDb and AllMusic are other examples) can only do the verification piece while not helping the basic notability issue at all. Frex, if an article has a solid number of citations to a broad range of media sources and notability has already been properly established as a result, then it's okay if a few citations to The Georgia Straight or the McGill Daily are present in the mix — but if the topic's basic notability is in question, they're not sources that can help boost it. Prvoslav Vujcic
[edit]Please check Prvoslav Vujcic, an article created by Tempo21. The same person created deleted article about Urban Book Circle and Djuradj Vujcic (a son of Prvoslav Vujcic). For me, it's hard to believe that somebody can publish 12 books in 2 years, by the same publisher - the (UBC Press). Also, Prvoslav Vujcic can't be found in their online catalogue. Many references are in Serbian, from Serbian press. For example: "Vujcic is a member of... the US-based International Association of Writers. In 2007, the International Association of Writers named him a Poetry Ambassador of the United States." The references are two texts from Serbian press. I couldn't find the International Association of Writers on the Internet. --N Jordan (talk) 07:20, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi Shaun, I am new to Wiki. can you tell me why you proposed to delete page? Thanks Patrickmurphyus (talk) 16:51, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
Hi Shaun, thanks for your feedback. What happens next? Is the matter up for general discussion now? I think I did something wrong by deleting speedy deletion, apologies I didn't realize and only saw that bit afterwards! I also contested it and though I had posted it but then didn't know how to get that back!
Its a lot of hassle creating a page, I just wanted to create a page related to the person as he had recently passed away, but didn't realize it would create so much discussion or hassle! I wasn't really aware how it worked. I think the best thing is to delete and bow out of wiki gracefully!! Thanks Patrickmurphyus (talk) 18:10, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

- Corral in its entireity, was shown just after midnight last evening, on a weird little channel called Silver Screen Classics, not available in all markets.
- BTW, I hosted a film festival last night at our local air museum, where we showed wartime animation and propaganda films that had an aviation theme. Our featured guest was Bob Lower who directed Shameless Propaganda, looking at the films produced in the NFB Canada Carries On and The World in Action series in the Second World War. We had a standing-room crowd and apparently everyone liked it judging by the ovation received at the end of the night.FWiW Bzuk (talk) 17:59, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

I was curious as to whether it was just coincidence, , already in their sked, or because Colin Low has just died. thanks. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 18:04, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Sorry to hear about Colin Low's passing. I have become very interested in the NFB filmmakers and know a few personally including Aaron Kim Johnston who hired Russell Crowe for his first North American feature film debut (shot, in all places, in Brandon, Manitoba). Corral had appeared a number of times on the Silver Screen Classics schedule, so it was probably happenstance that it was shown recently on television. BTW, I now have the inter-negative film for Jane Marsh's Air Cadets (1944). No sound but glorious colour. We (CAHS group) plan to premiere it on April 28 to celebrate the Air Cadet's 75th Anniversary. We also have found a 1957 Crawley Films, Air Cadet Story which we have dubbed down from a 16 mm print. - @Bzuk: Yes, it's an amazing bit of wiki-magic that User:Bearcat showed me a while back. Works like a charm. In fact, I'd added one to an article a while back, someone promptly created the English article, and the template disappeared, replaced by a link to the new English article. There's more info on it at Template:Interlanguage link and it's the only correct way to link between language wikis, especially now that Wikidata has taken over storing the links for different language versions of articles, as part of Phase 1. Which pipeline in The Battle for Oil?
[edit]Re:Hi Bill. Trying figure out what pipeline from Alberta to Montreal was being built during WWII so I could link to it -- and drawing a blank. Is it possible the film depicts work on the Canadian Oil Pipeline, a crude oil pipeline from Norman Wells, NT to Whitehorse, YK? I found a nice history list here. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 18:50, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
- The film describes the pipeline as originating from Portland, Oregon and its construction as an international project. The oil from Alberta was first transported by rail to the United States. Hi Shawn, did you know about this made-for-tv film? It was entirely shot in Montreal and has some interesting characters linked to it, not the least being Barbara Streisand, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and a real favourite of mine, Julia Ormond. The drama tells the story of Varian Fry rather clumsily, but with an attempt to honour the hero. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 13:48, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

My two cents
[edit]Re: Hi Bill. I want to begin by reiterating how impressed I am with your work in Canadian film, especially, these days, Canadian World War II propaganda films. But I'll be remiss if I didn't share a concern that I have: that too many of these short WWII newsreel series films might be challenged at some point as individually non-notable, per WP:NFILM. I say this because I've noticed of late that aside from the detailed synopses that you provide on each film, most or all of the rest of the content seems given over to repeating text that has appeared in multiple articles on other series titles: the distribution for the series as a whole, the ways that these were compilation documentaries, Lorne Greene as the "voice of doom," etc. You've put so much time and effort into these articles and I'd hate to see them end up AfD. I trust that you've mined as much from your references as possible in support of the individual notability of the films, but I thought I'd flag this. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 16:14, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Shawn, I do share the same reservations about the notability of introducing so many films from the Canada Carries On and The World in Action series. As a former librarian, I have also been very aware of how the NFB provided a rich source of historical material, and for that reason alone, the nearly 15,000 titles in the NFB collection represent a vital storehouse of knowledge on Canada and Canadians.
- As a former filmmaker, my interests have typically settled on the "classic" period of the 1940s–1950s, especially focusing on the little-known films of that period. I did want to stay with the task of writing on the obscure, which is what most of these wartime documentaries represent. My first Wiki effort was in writing about just one of these older NFB films, but then, I began to see a pattern in how they were constructed and merchandised. I often start with a template and alter whenever possible the data in each section, but there is a great deal of overlap. As you can appreciate, there are only a few reference sources on the topic of NFB documentaries, so I will make it a point to more clearly delineate the value or notability of the individual title.
- I have talked this over with NFB staff and was persuaded that there is an interest in the "real" world about these films. I have also worked with an NFB director who has researched many of the films I have documented, and recently was a guest at a CAHS meeting to talk about their importance to film history in Canada. with that in mind, I have submitted a research paper on the topic of NFB documentaries and their significant impact on Canada, to be presented at a national conference later in the year. Next month, in a corollary presentation, I will be screening two "lost" aviation films, one from Crawley films in 1957 and an internegative of a 1944 NFB production, at a local air museum.
- From my past Wiki history, you can see that I have written on a number of topics but my usual fare was the little-known or "forgotten", such as Varian's War, Varian Fry and Sunset, articles that I worked on recently. I will still be writing these kinds of articles, once my NFB "jag" is over. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 23:29, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
In re-screening my copy of this film, I noticed that large sections of Quebec – Path of Conquest were set in Montreal during the Second World War. I just added the following: One of the other significant contributions from Quebec are the weapons of war produced by the province's industry, mainly concentrated in Montreal where munitions factories and aircraft manufacturing plants were built and were running at full capacity. From the airfields along the eastern seaboard come the bombers that are built in North America, as they are ferried across the Atlantic Ocean. The seaports that also are found in this region provide not only the warships but also the merchant shipping from countless nations setting out in convoys to supply Great Britain and other Allies across the Atlantic. Besides newsreel material, original footage was also shot at Montreal's docks and factories, notably the Montreal factories where munitions and aircraft factories were built. Ship and rail yards were also shown. Workers at companies such as Canadian Vickers and Noorduyn built NA-64 Harvard trainers and Consolidated PBY Canso flying boats. The Canadian Pacific Railway’s Angus Shops turned out a range of weapons, including Valentine tanks, while the Montreal Locomotive Works built Ram and Grizzly tanks, and the Sexton self-propelled gun. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 13:31, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Bzuk: Thanks. Yeah this one is just especially fascinating to me as a Montrealer: I'm always looking for old shots of this city. It's one of the reasons why I created The Memories of Angels: a collage film from a few years ago entirely created from archival shots like this. BTW II: I was surprised you missed that the director of Quebec – Path of Conquest was none other than F. R. Crawley, aka "Budge," who I'm sure you know quite well! - Thanks. Yeah there's something wrong with the "Publications" delsort page. I don't quite understand it. Perhaps you do. Gonna stay away from that one. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 21:53, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
- Well, since you're using a script, you can always manually add the entry to the delsort page. There's nothing wrong with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Publications page, it's simply a redirect to the Literature delsort page. At any rate, just a friendly notice, and cheers, North America1000 22:00, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

For your comment "Well, as I understand it, the more fringe viewpoints you remove, the stronger they become, because homeopathy". Nice one. ThePlatypusofDoom (Talk) 20:34, 6 June 2016 (UTC) |

- Well, you're completing it with the wrong name, @Faratel110:. We do NOT use honorifics in article titles. We're going to delete your redirect and move the article to Amin Daliri, where it belongs. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 22:06, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
- Oh thanks thats what i wanted to do but i didnt know how to move it to an existing article Faratel110 (talk) 22:16, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Shawn in Montreal:: Please do it for me im waiting, i'll continue editing when its doneFaratel110 (talk) 22:28, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
- We now have to wait for an administrator to first delete the redirect that you had created. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 22:32, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
Mark Breeze
[edit]You added Mark Breeze to the sportsperson and rugby lists, but he is not a sportsperson or rugby player. Just wanted to check before I undo that. Thanks!Apriestofgix (talk) 16:18, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Strafford Train Station, Pennsylvania
[edit]Shawn
You made reference to the Strafford Train Station being a structure at the Centennial Exposition. Wonder what documentation you have for that assertion. I lived in Strafford a dozen years, used the station, painted it prior to the renovation. I researched the story ( seeing pavilion pictures and dimensions ) in the Philadelphia library to confirm local folklore but was unable to do so.

- @PSMorganJr: I know nothing about the matter, but the claim made at Strafford station is verified here. best, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 19:17, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
