Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Africa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Africa. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Africa|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Africa. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

There is a general consensus that minor regional football tournaments do not warrant separate sub-articles, especially those focused on age-specific categories. Such articles are reserved exclusively for continental championships that attract significant media attention and widespread recognition. EpicAdventurer (talk) 22:20, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - Volcanic Sports is a Blogspot source so it's not WP:RS. Kick442 mentions him scoring a goal but contains no significant coverage. The two Khmer Times articles are both trivial mentions. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 00:31, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Kick442 mentions him scoring a goal but contains no significant coverage. As long as the website tells only about the footballer more than that stuff, it would be fine in my opinion. I imagine this one is such an example. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 15:54, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In my view, the Kick442 isn't enough. In the prose part of the article, he is only mentioned in the first sentence. I wouldn't class it as significant but that's just my personal opinion. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 18:53, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can tell this individual does not meet WP:NBIO. The article had two sources, but one was completely unrelated to this man at all and was instead about The Crown (TV series). The only remaining source is simply a link to his ResearchGate account. I'm not getting much of note on a BEFORE search, although it does seem to be a fairly common name, so someone else might have more success. CoconutOctopus talk 21:00, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I could only find some facebook groups and UK charity webpage about the school. 1keyhole (talk) 06:48, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. If you could only find Facebook groups and a charity webpage, then you didn't click the {{find sources AFD}} links at the top of this AFD page. Also, the school changed names a few years ago, so you have to search again under the old name, e.g., this link to Google News, which will give you news articles saying things like MP Didmus Wekesa Barasa is an alumnus[6] and another saying who the school's (current? recent?) principal is.[7]. A building burned down.[8] It is officially designated as an extra county school (formerly, 'provincial'), which is an important thing in Kenya but not something that I'd expect an American to know about.[9] There are more, but I think this suffices to show that there nom's WP:BEFORE search was inadequate. Maybe keep. I do think there is a credible claim to his passing WP:NACTOR for multiple notable roles. From looking at his IMDB he actually has some lead roles in content available on Netflix (for example https://nairobiwire.com/2020/10/meet-poacher-actor-brian-ogola.html ). The trouble with African media is the press is often ridiculous in its puffery so finding usable sources is often challenging because many of the newspapers get discredited at AFD for being over the top promotional. Based on his work, I say he passes an SNG, but based on sourcing I don't think we will be able to find WP:SIGCOV.4meter4 (talk) 07:16, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Weak delete May pass SNG, but not GNG or SIGCOV. Link to the East African is broken, ands that could have been significant. African actors usually get less coverage than equally notable international counterparts, so I’m open to changing my mind if someone can provide one independent, reliable source.ANairobian (talk) 06:54, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fails WP:GNG/WP:NPROFIT. Cannot find any sourcing that confirms the existence of this trade union other than Facebook. Appears to be a single person as acting as a union. Referred to in a number of locations as "Union générale marocaine du travail" (for example, this Danish trade union report on Morocco, but which cites French Wikipedia as source). I also see some reports referencing the French name, but this has been confused with the long establised UGTM (Union générale des travailleurs du Maroc). I've not been able to do an extensive search in Arabic, but French and English draw blanks. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 00:39, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

btw the UGMT referred to in the Danish report is not the same body. That was founded in 1960 and is notable. Mccapra (talk) 17:37, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, see page 31 of the Ulandssekretariatet report, citing French Wiki, last entry on the table, it's referring to the UGMT, not the UGTM. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 19:38, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fails the general notability criteria and the SNG for creatives as they are an upcoming comedian. In a search for more sources, this source from The Sun and this source from Nigerian Tribune seems promising but the lack of byline shows that they are sponsored posts. Other sources are passing mentions or are interviews. Best, Reading Beans, Duke of Rivia 09:49, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Reading Beans Easy over there, Are you sure you did [[WP:BEFORE]] before nominating this article for deletion? My research is suggesting otherwise. Also, Please tell me how you concluded the source from Tribune is sponsored? I created this article in 2022 and I can spot it needs more reliable sources which I am going to work on now but nomination for deletion seems a way too early. Tesleemah (talk) 10:24, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The tribune source was already in the article, a WP:BEFORE is to bring in new references Tesleemah (talk) 10:34, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The BEFORE is to look for ways to improve the article instead of deleting. The two sources I saw that could have helped were not independent as they were sponsored. As I explained in the nomination statement, lack of byline (or use of newspaper names) shows that they are sponsored. For example, The Guardian uses Editor or Guardian Nigeria for sponsored articles. Do you understand now?
The nomination is not too early, an article was created 3 hours ago can be nominated for deletion if they don’t meet the inclusion criteria through this 7 days process or a CSD. You should know this as a patroller. Best, Reading Beans, Duke of Rivia 18:48, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response, well I can't find sponsored posts here as headline however I see they are weak sources and I'm neutral towards their deletion like I voted previously. The article was created when I was still finding my way to Wikipedia. So Yeah, it's fine. Tesleemah (talk) 23:24, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak Keep : I created this article in 2022 when I was not familiar with the policies of creating article, I see they don't truly pass WP:NCREATIVE after thorough review however they pass WP:GNG as the article has been updated with independent sources. I'm neutral towards the deletion or allowing it to remain, It's up to other editors to vote appropriately. Tesleemah (talk) 11:44, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This name page does not appear to meet our notability guidelines. My WP:BEFORE reveals only passing mentions in lists of Nigerian names, no significant coverage. A search on Wikipedia for "Uzemehefe" reveals no matches, so it cannot be converted to a disambiguation page. I am also not seeing a plausible redirect target, so I believe deletion is in order. All the sources Fail WP: GNG. Being a director of a non-notable organization does not count toward WP:SNG. Ibjaja055 (talk) 05:05, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep subject is of high notability in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is a prominent energy figure who advocated for the establishment of key energy initiatives, including the Nigeria Energy Transition Fund (NET-FUND), an innovative financing model to propel Nigeria’s energy transition, which acquired $2bn in Foreign Direct Investment into the country. He is a well-known figure in Nigeria and in the Nigerian energy industry at large.

While an editor claims that the Centre for Energy Investment and Innovation (an organization the subject leads) lacks notability, this does/should not diminish the subject's recognition/notability. Reputable sources such as Vanguard, Premium Times, and This Day have consecutively reported about the subject. See [10] and [11] [12] [13]

The article may require improvement and minor edits, but this should not serve as a ground for deletion. Instead, it should be seen as an opportunity to expand the article and provide more context, keeping in mind that a lack of citations should not automatically lead to deletion unless it severely impacts the article's verifiability. Gonisulaimann (talk) 21:20, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment- Being associated with notable individuals or organizations does not automatically make a subject notable. Most of the sources, if not all, do not explicitly discuss the topic, although they are reliable. However, they are not independent, and the article fails to meet both the General Notability Guideline WP:GNG and the Subject Specific Notability Guideline WP:SNG.Royalesignature (talk). 05:40, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No evidence of notability. The purpose of name indices is to disambiguate articles on people with the same name. With one person using it as a middle name, and one link to Wikidata (which shouldn't be there per Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Archive 204#New RFC on linking to Wikidata), this doesn't serve that purpose. And it's completely unsourced. Part of WP:ANI#Nigerian name project * Pppery * it has begun... 05:34, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Lord Bolingbroke I would suggest monitoring the discussion at WP:ANI#Nigerian name project. There are admins at ANI monitoring the situation, and there was some discussion at ANI about waiting to do a bundled AFD nomination until the proper moment. The subject of this article fails WP:GNG and WP:MUSICBIO. He is the still an up-and-coming artist who has not been gain significant coverage to warrant a separate article. Some of the sources cited in the article are just press releases, others are unreliable blogs. • Keep: I believe this event meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines:
  1. Significance: The incident involves a military aircraft, and any military engagements resulting in casualties often have broader implications for regional stability and/or international relations. This particular event is noteworthy given the ongoing issues Sudan is facing.
  2. Media Coverage: There has been significant media coverage of the incident, which explains what happened in the incident thoroughly. Reliable sources have reported on the details of the event. Some citations which I easily found are here, here, here, and here that discuss the incident in detail.
  3. Aviation Context: This incident is part of a bigger story about military planes that have accidents in war zones. Adding it to Wikipedia helps people understand the dangers and problems that military aircraft deal with. Also, I don't think heavy military aircraft, like the Il-76, involved in shoot-downs is ordinary. They do have significant information.

Merge all to Bash Luks and copy edit/trim for encyclopedic tone. While I can understand the need to cleanup after a sock editor with a coi, the referencing in this case is not bad. The articles use multiple reliable news sources from Uganda and Ghana where Bash Luks and/or Lot Fire Records are the primary subject. The Kampala Dispatch and Tower Post are reputable newspapers. News Ghana is a reputable news portal. Capital Radio (ie 91.3 Capital FM) is also reputable. There is certainly enough reliable secondary coverage to support an article on Bash Luks per WP:BASIC/WP:GNG. At this point I think Lot Fire Records would be better covered in that article because I don't think the record label as yet passes WP:NCORP. The list is small, and doesn't need to be a stand alone article.4meter4 (talk) 03:51, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd rather abstain at this point. In general I find the way Ghana topics are covered on wikipedia frustrating; largely because we don't accept their media as reliable which means they get systematically deleted even when there are sources in that country's media publications. There must be some better way to handle these other than giving in to WP:SYSTEMICBIAS.4meter4 (talk) 15:28, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
