Problems with stub templates for Spanish regions

Hi all -

there have been some problems recently with a few stub templates relating to Spanish regions. A stub template for the Canary Islands ({{CanaryIslands-geo-stub}}) was upmerged to the main Spain geography stub category, even though they were big enough for their own categories (which is, of course, a subcategory of the Spanish national equivalent). Similarly, generic and geo stub types for Spain's Plazas de soberanía were turned into redirects to the equivalent Spanish national templates. In this case, this didn't remove articles from specific Plaza de soberanía subcategories, as the templates were upmerged. The templates were, however, doubly-upmerged, and though the articles remained in the Spanish stub categories, they disappeared from the equivalent North African ones. The editors who did this were anon IP editors.

Also, at some point earlier this year a large number of spanish regional stub templates were converted from the standard boilerplate text to use the asbox template. The asbox template was only ever an experiment, intended to be used on just one or two stub types. As it happens, asbox was largely abandoned as a system for making stub templates, since it proved to be less useful than the former coding. Again, the editors whoi did this were at anon IPs - ones in the same range as the recent changed (a series of IPs indicating the location was in Spain).

It seems very likely that the anons involved may be regular contributors to the Spanish language Wikipedia. If anyone here has any idea who they may be, please can you gently tell them that the changes are not appreciated. In the case of the changes to the Canary islands stubs, the very slow server queue in recent times means that null edits were necessary to get all the articles back in the right category - something I've just spent the last three quarters of an hour doing. Personal Names question

Sorry guys, is there a way to know if a person was born with a Spanish name or a regional name or a combination of both? I mean, e.g., ... Ricardo Zamora Martínez or Ricard Zamora i Martínez or Ricard Zamora Martínez; Xabier Alonso Olano or Javier Alonso Olano or Xabier Alontso Olano... --necronudist (talk) 13:13, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Given Names can be changed to any language as for example: Miguel, Miquel and Mikel.... or Eugenio, Uxio, Eugeni... depending on the use given by the person, it is even legal to change from one name to the other in the registry. On the Other hands surnames are not change whatsoever (at least in this times) thus you can find someone called Miguel Echevarria (Correct Basque Etxeberria) going to live to the Basque Country and just changing his name to Mikel Echevarria.

Asturian language name

I've noticed that some users have removed the Asturian language name from Asturian geo articles. Examples include: Besullo (Allande), Gedrez, Prahúa, etc. Is it inappropriate to include it within the article, especially when the Asturian language wikipedia article spells the place name differently than the English language and Spanish language wiki articles? --Rosiestep (talk) 23:06, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

I would say it's completely appropriate to add it since that's a local name and Astur-Leonese has some degree of legal recognition in the relevant communities. Valenciano (talk) 22:18, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Valencia historical trains/trams

I have uploaded several scanned slides on the regional meter gauge trains around Valencia. These pictures where taken in 1981 and 1987. See (Commons:Category:Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana). These pics where taken partly in the FEVE period. (With the FEVE logos) There are several issues:

  • These where taken at the narrow gauge station on the North side off the city. I dont know the name of it. Now the trams make a U-turn at the same location.
  • I dont know anything about these types of train. A description would be usefull. Some may even be from pre FEVE times.
  • I dont know any Spanish, but a Spanish description would be usefull.
I added some links to pictures in the Spanish Wiki article. Maybe this will trigger some action from our Spanish friends.
  • The Category is unclear: Does the "FGV" refer to railway company running these trains now -or- To the railways in the Generalitat Valencia? In the first case I would put these pictures under the FEVE category (and maybe create a FEVE subcategory) In the second case I can leave things as now.
I created a new cat "FEVE rail in Generalitat Valencia" for the pictures from that period.

The station at the tram loop is now Pont de Fusta (would translate as Wooden Bridge) but would have been 'Valencia Central' then. FGV runs all the railways in the Generalitat - that includes the tram in Alicante. Valenciano (talk) 17:58, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. Naming convention for churches in Spain

Not all churches in Spain follow a naming convention. Many articles are named "Church of Foo" and I think it would be appropriate for most/all to follow this naming convention. Some are grammatically incorrect. Some are misleading.

I recognize that the articles were named in different ways on the es wiki, and that this probably influenced the selected name for the en wiki article, but I'd like to see article name conformity on the en wiki. Do you agree? I don't want to start on Redirects if this has been hashed out before. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:58, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I added a search box to the archives to see if this had been discussed before and it appears not. My personal preference would be for the form San / Santa [saint's name] (de{l/lla} [location name]) rather than Church of .... I think as direct a transliteration as possible should be made. The form San Isidro's Church sghould not be used as this is a mixture of a Spanish name with an English grammar convention. Jezhotwells (talk) 17:51, 6 August 2009 (UTC)


Thanks for your comments, @Jezhotwells. But at first glance, to me, your suggestion of San/Sant/Santa/Santo [saint's name] (de{l/lla} [location name]) appears to be an article about "Saint (name) of (location)", rather than an article about a church. As there are many "cathedral" articles that include "cathedral" in their name, I think "church" articles that include "church" should be acceptable. To better frame the myriad of naming styles (and the reason why I'm looking for some stability in naming convention), I updated some of what I wrote yesterday with these examples:

The first theatre and the first actors

Hello! I am interested in theatre history, and I hope some one can answer my question. I wonder: which was the first theatre, with proffesional actors of both genders, in Spain? I am also interested in the first known actor and actress, or the most famous actor and actress, of that theatre's early years. I have heard that the first theatre in Spain of this kaind was built in 1640. What was it called, and who were the first actor and actress there? I hope someone can answer my question. pronunciation of fútbol

A lot of football clubs have IPA for their names, and the word fútbol is usually transcribed [ˈfutβol]. This seems a bit dubious. Due to voicing assimilation, I'd expect either [ˈfudbol] (as in Catalan) or maybe [ˈfuðβol]. Can anyone say which? or are the transcriptions correct? kwami (talk) 08:10, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

The third one. The 't' is a very soft, aspirated ð; the 'b' is quite soft too. The first one would be about right for a Bayern supporter looking for Camp Nou :-) --mikaultalk 09:51, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Since that's such a large part of our audience, maybe I'd better leave it alone.

I'd say that was the case for "Barcelona", but not for "club", although you do have a bit of occlusion between the two words which complicates things a little... --mikaultalk 10:54, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Attacks to EADS-CASA article

I have a problem which a pair of American users, what for an inexplicable reason they disliking the fact of EADS-CASA is building the Eurofighter Typhoon in Spain.

This users, User:Dave1185 and User:BilCat was deleting repeatedly some references and pictures about the Spanish Eurofighter that I write in the EADS-CASA article. I don’t understand the reason of that attitude… In spite of being a fact confirmed that EADS-CASA makes these planes for the Spanish Air force, these American users insist that the plane is not a product of EADS-HOUSE and erase everything related with this fact.

anybody can help me with the EADS-CASA article, and to stop that guys?.

Tengo un problema con un par de usuarios Americanos, que por alguna extraña razón no les gusta el hecho de que EADS-CASA está construyendo el Eurofighter Typhoon en España.

Estos usuarios User:Dave1185 y User:BilCat han borrado repetidamente algunas referencias, y imágenes sobre el Eurofighter español que yo había puesto en el articulo de EADS-CASA. No entiendo la razón de esta actitud. A pesar de ser un hecho contrastado que EADS-CASA fabrica estos aviones para la fuerza Aérea Española, estos usuarios americanos insisten que el avión no es un producto de EADS-CASA y borran todo lo relacionado con este hecho.

Alguien puede ayudarme con el articulo de EADS-CASA y a parar a estos tipos?

I've listed the Monarchy of Spain article for peer review because…

My eyes have been on it too long and not enough views that have generated comments! lol. I have watched the page for a year looking to see if there were improvements, but none. So, this past summer I started editing the artical answering questions that I myself would have for the Spanish monarchy. There are other sections I wish to add (such as the Monarchy, media, and the people), but before I go further I wished to get comments on what is present.

Just to let you know, I've recently massively expanded Castile-La Mancha and Castile and León, mainly by translating material from es-wiki. The material seemed generally good, though woefully undercited. Just to let you know, I've recently massively expanded Castile-La Mancha and Castile and León, mainly by translating material from es-wiki. The material seemed generally good, though woefully undercited. Andalusia

I've now done a similar, even more massive, expansion of Andalusia. I've been translating a lot of Andalusia-related material, but the trove is well beyond what one person can possibly do. If anyone is interested in finding reasonably important topics that lack articles, as of this moment more than half of the recipients of the title Hijo Predilecto de Andalucía lack articles (or the articles are under variants of their names that I didn't find, and lack redirects for the name under which they received the award). Nearly all have articles in es-wiki, so a lot of this could be done as a translation exercise. - Jmabel | Talk 22:38, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Andalusian independentist conspiracy (1641)

I've been doing a bunch of translations on Andalusia-related topics (see Special:Contributions/Jmabel if you want the list). The latest at this moment is Andalusian independentist conspiracy (1641), but I found quite a few problems with the Spanish-language original, which I've noted through various tags in my translation and by remarks on the associated talk pages in both the English- and Spanish-language wikis. If someone knows this history or has good sources, this really could use some work by someone more expert. Let me know if you are stronger in one language than the other, and would be fixing things only in the English (or only in the Spanish) and need help to bring your improvements to the other article.
