  • Is this a Deaths in 2007 question? i'm assuming it is and you're talking about the Aussie lawyer as opposed to the sculptor (or BRMC bloke for that matter). If this is the right Hayes, i'd say it was a definitely borderline case perhaps being nudged towards 'keep' for the moment by the fact of some of his more high-profile cases and his murder. not particularly sure either way, tho. are you just seeking opinion on it? best, tomasz. 14:39, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I'm biassed as I wrote the start of the Wiki article. Let me just say that it is huge news in Australia - one of the country's leading lawyers liaising with multiple prostitutes and overdosing on an injection given by one of them. Hi. You removed the death notice for this person, citing the reason "Vandalism, article has nothing to with Ramsbotham". Although the article was about someone else, there was a reference to the death in the first paragraph. Tom, As I wrote in the edit summary with my edit, we have previously used the Wikipedia name for people with "two" names. See, for example, Bruce Bennett and his death notice Deaths in February 2007#24 which are not listed by his birth name Herman Brix. It is arguable whether we should use Stack Bundles' birth name, but that's an argument to be had on Stack's article page. As long as WP editors and admins allow the article to remain under his "stage name", then I believe that we should follow suit and use the same notation. I think that the Deaths notices should mirror the same Wikipedia criteria for naming, notability etc. That's why I do tend to get annoyed that there are so many Deaths notices for people who would not pass a notability test if they were written up as Wikipedia articles. I'm talking about Romanian actors, Czech writers and the like who we seem to tolerate on the Deaths pages, despite no-one in the English-speaking world ever hearing of them! I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Obviously you weren't intending any harm, but please go there are read the tags at the tags at the top and bottom of the article. That debate was closed three weeks ago. Talk page header

Tom, did you mean that the user templates were out of alignment? If that was the issue, I think that the "proud Wikipedian" template that you were using had a stray "break" command in the code, and that was causing the alignment problem. I have substitued a different "proud Wikipedian" template, and the problem seems to be resolved. Is that what you meant to happen? If I have not helped, please revert my change. Suharto

Hi Tom, Sorry to revert you on the Suharto name. As I understand it, many Indonesians have only one name. The term "Haji" means the person has undertaken the Hajj to Mecca, so it's not really a name. I don't know where the "Muhammad" comes from, maybe his father's name. Anyway, I think it's always safer to use the same name as the deceased's Wikipedia article. Are you still in HK? The key word here is "recommended". My understanding is that he does in fact feel very proud to be a KBE.. and uses it. Not all the time, but when appropriate.

That's not a key word, because it doesn't appear in the guideline. It is enough for the article to mention that he received the award, as with every other American recipient. WillOakland (talk) 08:41, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Post-nominal letters should be included when they are issued by a country or organization the subject has been closely associated with. Honors issued by other entities may be mentioned in the article, but generally should be omitted from the lead.
Writers should remember that the meaning of the most obvious (to them) post-nominal initials will not be obvious to some readers. When post-nominal initials are used the meaning should be readily available to the reader. This is most easily done with a piped link to an article with the appropriate title thus:
Joe Bloggs, VC gives Joe Bloggs, VC
ensuring that readers who hover over the initials see the expanded abbreviation as a hint and in the status bar at the bottom of the window. Readers who click immediately on the link, missing hints will hopefully see a short article with the definition clear and near the start. Often one line article will suffice, with appropriate links to further information, thus: Jack Brabham, OBE. (see above in regards to academic titles and post-nominal initials)

A tag has been placed on Palm Beach Gardens Police Foundation requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Emilie Benes Brzezinski‎ article

The article on the artist Emilie Benes Brzezinski‎ is very short as it is. I find the information on her son and other family members to be all out of proportion. Does the article really need to say anything about her husband's and kids' careers, when it barely has a paragraph about the artist herself? But certainly, one could just write, "Her husband, [name, linked to article], is a well-known political scientist. Her daughter, [name, linked to article], is a prominent television journalist, and her son, Mark Brzezinski, is a prominent attorney." That, at MOST, is all that's needed. I mean, you've linked the son's name to the article about him; that's quite enough. The reader can go there to find the particulars. And that's true for the husband as well, by the way.

I do notice, in contrast, that the mention of the daughter, Mika, is appropriately brief - even though, as a highly visible major network TV journalist, she's almost certainly better known than the son. Gee, do we see a pattern here? An article about a woman artist, and half of it's about her husband and two kids, especially the husband and the male child. Is there a word for this sort of thing? Does it rhyme and alliterate with sexism? Yes. I think it does.

New Years Message for WikiProject United States

With the first of what I hope will be monthly newsletters I again want to welcome you to the project and hope that as we all work together through the year we can expand the project, create missing articles and generally improve the pedia thought mutual cooperation and support. Now that we have a project and a solid pool of willing members I wanted to strike while the iron is hot and solicite help in doing a few things that I believe is a good next step in solidifiing the project. I have outlined a few suggestions where you can help with on the projects talk page. This includes but is not limited too updating Portal:United States, assessing the remaining US related articles that haven't been assessed, eliminating the Unrefernced BLP's and others. If you have other suggestions or are interested in doing other things feel free. I just wanted to offer a few suggestions were additional help is needed. Coordinator sought for the US National Archives WikiProject

We are seeking a coordinator to help reboot the project and work on new initiatives! The role is modeled after other Wikiproject coordinators, like the WikiProject Military History coordinators. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! New deal for page patrollers

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

Senior Wikipedians

WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older has been inactive for some time. The following three proposals may help invigorate this project.

  1. Change the name of this project to WikiProject Senior Wikipedians.[a]
  2. Open membership in this project to users who are at least 60 years of age and have made at least 50 edits in the past year.[b]
  3. Open supporting membership in this project to users who are less than 60 years old but have made at least 50 edits in the past year and support the goals of this project.[c]

Suggested goals for this project:

  1. To support collaboration and communication among members for the advancement and improvement of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.
  2. To encourage older people, retired people, and soon-to-be-retired people to participate in Wikipedia both for the advancement of the encyclopedia and for their own personal enjoyment.
  3. To encourage older people to share their experience and expertise for the improvement of Wikipedia.
  4. To encourage older users to use their experience and expertise to help younger and less experienced users.
  5. To encourage participation in local and regional Wikimedia events.
  6. To sponsor Wikipedia meetings and classes at places where older people gather.
  7. To advocate for the elimination of ageism and sexism in Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.

Notes

  1. ^ The current name of this project, WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older, is somewhat cumbersome and excludes participation by any users under the age of 70 years.
  2. ^ This current minimum age limit of this project is 70 years. A minimum age limit of 60 years should permit the participation of most retired users. The minimum activity level of 50 edits per year is arbitrary. A minimum activity level indicates continued interest. Members who do not meet the minimum activity level shall be moved to inactive status. Members who have died shall be moved to memorial status.
  3. ^ A new class of Supporting Members allows those users under 60 years to support the goals of the project. Users approaching the age of 60 years may wish to become supporting members in anticipation of reaching the minimum age limit for members.

Elder Wikipedians

WikiProject Elder Wikipedians

My proposal to make extensive changes to WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older was a bust, primarily because many users felt that the term "Senior Wikipedian" implied a higher ranking Wikipedia membership. Therefore, I am making two less ambitious proposals:

Proposal #1. Change the name of "WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older" to "WikiProject Elder Wikipedians".
Proposal #2. Drop the minimum age requirement to 60 years.
