Syuejia District[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] (Chinese: 學甲; Hanyu Pinyin: Xuéjiǎ Qū; Tongyong Pinyin: Syuéjiǎ Cyu; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Ha̍k-kah-khu), alternatively spelled Xuejia,[8][10] is a district of about 24,857 residents in Tainan City, Taiwan.

Name

[edit]

The name of the district means "excellent academic achievement", in which the word 學 (syué/xué) means academics, and the word 甲(jiǎ) is the top grade in the traditional Taiwanese grading system.[citation needed]

History

[edit]

After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, Syuejia was organized as a rural township of Tainan County. On 2 February 1968, Syuejia was upgraded from rural township to urban township due to its population. On 25 December 2010, Tainan County was merged with Tainan City and Syuejia was upgraded to a district of the city.

"The Strengths of China's Charm Offensive: Changes in the Political Landscape of a Southern Taiwan Town under Attack from Chinese Economic Power". The China Quarterly. 232: 956–981. doi:10.1017/S0305741017000972. China's trade with Taiwan has a political motive: winning the hearts and minds of the Taiwanese people. The effectiveness of China's economic statecraft can be examined in the Syuejia (Xuejia) case, where Taiwan put up strong resistance to the generous benefits offered by China. This article investigates the political implications of the Chinese-designed contract farming programme in Syuejia and argues that if economic favours are delivered, and positive impressions also created, political attitudes can be revised. Without these two prerequisites, however, replicating the Syuejia results elsewhere and thus disturbing the cross-Strait status quo will be difficult. When put in a theoretical context, the changes in the political landscape of Syuejia illustrate the interplay of economic interests and political identity.
