:::IP, if the problem were that a person was being included in troublesome ways, we would have to move with urgency per the [[WP:BLP|biography of living persons policy]]. What you're saying it seems is rather that a person is being left out. That makes it a run of the mill content dispute. What I would suggest you do is create an account (a static IP might do too) and declare your conflicts of interest as instructed at [[WP:DISCLOSE]], and then make specific requests for changes to the article as instructed at [[WP:COIREQ]]. Then, when you encounter editors that disagree with your position, you enter dialog with them and follow the steps at [[WP:DR|Wikipedia:Dispute resolution]] until they are resolved. It may sound like a lot, I think it's doable taking it one step at a time. At any rate, that's the best advice I got. If you have specific editors who you think are acting in bad faith and deliberately trying to erase you out of spite, you could report them to [[WP:ANI]], but you'd need some evidence backing up your allegations to take it up with the admins in that way.     Can't recover password

    After years of doing Wikipedia edits from a computer that automatically logged me in, I'm on a different computer where that info is not available. I remember my user name, but not my password.     I believe that it sends the needed info to the email address that you registered for the purpose. If you didn't register an address, or if you did but for one reason or another you don't check incoming mail there, then of course this won't work. -- Hoary (talk) 03:03, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    To expand on this answer, if you didn't register an email address, or can no longer access it, you're out of luck. The only way to recover your password is by getting a password reset email.     A possible solution is to open a new account, which could have a username similar though not identical to your old account. Enable email access so that this doesn't happen again.     Armidazhou, you claim above that Zhou Chengzhou "has passed the audit"; and in the deletion discussion, that "[i]t must have been passed for the right reason". It seems to me that the article was created directly in mainspace by Sai Li 450, has never been reviewed or accepted, has never reached an acceptable standard, and in particular has never established its subject's notability.   Maproom (talk) 08:12, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    So are you asking people to find sources for Zhou Chengzhou so that Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zhou Chengzhou will end with a "keep" decision?     Davidcay, I've made the change. I think and hope that the result is better than it was; but chronologically it's a bit of a mess, and anyway I don't think that the lead is the best place for your employment history, so I'm not satisfied with what I've done. (I've also removed one part of your message above, because of policy hereabouts.) In future, the best way to make requests would be in Talk:David Cay Johnston -- however, when I took a look there I saw a wall of text (which I didn't bother to read) about earlier request(s), and if that experience put you off the notion of asking on the talk page, I sympathize.     I somehow managed to add myself to Telugu Wikipedia, but I don't speak Telugu

    Yes, I know it sounds weird.

    I made my account here about five months ago, but so far have not really done anything on here. But one day, I was reading about something, and I tried to look at the page in different languages and then translate them into English (because what if there's something interesting?). However, it seems that when I opened the Telugu page, it logged me in, and now it thinks that I am Telugu, despite me not knowing a single word in this language. So is there a way to "remove" myself from there? I mean, of course it's not really a big deal, but from time to time, Wikipedia sends me a notification in Telugu and it's slowly becoming kinda annoying

    Random0Being Accounts will work on every Wikimedia Foundation project, such as other language versions of Wikipedia. Because of this you cannot "remove" yourself from other versions.     @Random0Being: Your account is automatically created at a Wikimedia wiki if you view any page while you are logged in. Special:CentralAuth/Random0Being shows 21 accounts. I have 354. You cannot remove yourself. Some wikis send a welcome post to new accounts. Just ignore it. It quickly stops. I'm surprised if you have received several Telugu notifications.     How to use archives template using list?

    I looked at Help:Archiving a talk page and Template:Archives, and am trying to use the template to list the archives for my user talk page. My archives are not the standard "Archive 1", "Archive 2", etc. How do I specify the template parameters? It appears I can use the "list" parameter, but If I try to use it in the format "archives| list=archive2019", the page displays the text "archive2019" but it is not hyperlinked.     Include reliable sources. Do not make claims in the article which are against the stated source. Do not give false edit summaries like "Fixed typo" when you make significant changes.     Per the article, this cheese product is said to have originated in the Armenian Highlands, whose article says the region has been inhabited by Armenians, Assyrians, Georgians, Greeks, Jews, Arabs, Turkmens and Kurds at various times.     Biographies , artists etc.

    Hello! So I guess I violated a policy about outside links. It was to the artists being talked about website and I'm not a constant editor so I didn't know you couldn't link since you have a hyperlink tool to use.

    So a member of a Band which had hit records etc. and a recording artist and session musician is listed on the bands Wikipedia page and on other pages about the songs he recorded on. He doesn't have a Wikipedia page but as a reference I linked to his website since his name goes to a website not associated with him. I got messages saying you can't link to an outside webpage. So since a majority of the other musicians have links I thought it was OK.

    I didn't really appreciate you (The editors) making me feel like I was committing a great sin for wanting people to have an additional resource if they wanted one. You could have just said oh you can only link him to a wikipedia page in his name.

    Some of your rules are not that understandable. I looked them up after. Thought you were talking about spam etc. etc. not just linking to an artist website. You might just say that. Even though an artist is mentioned or the subject of the page you can't link to their artist website it must be a Wikipedia page and on the Wikipedia page for the artist then you can link to their website.

    Johnnysings, I'm sorry that you felt as if you were feeling villainized. If you wanted to add a link to the official website, you could consider adding it to the "External links" section at the bottom of the article (or adding the section if it doesn't exist). External links should be used sparingly and should rarely be added directly to the body. If the link can be used as a source, just add it as an inline citation. You can check out WP:REFB for a guide to citing sources. If you are ever confused about a policy, you can always ask, we'd be happy to assist you in any way possible. I guess that these days linking to things and having everyone link every website and social media account (I don't really do social media) just more informational but still artists websites etc. so it didn't even occur to me that linking wouldn't be OK, heck my phone and other devices are linking me to things automatically that I don't want to be linked too.     Essay/guideline on a blocked user writing a practice article

    There's an essay or guideline somewhere about a user who has been blocked for disruptive editing having the chance to select an article and significantly expand it within their userspace, and then for an admin to review their work and consider an unblock.     Make a bot ignore a link

    Hello! I was editing 1.1.1.1 and noticed the links for the DNS over HTTPS urls were marked as dead. They returned HTTP 400 errors, as they should because I wasn't making a DNS request.     Hi, Zhatty! The basic structure of a proper reference is to surround the link with ref tags like this: <ref>example.com</ref>. Remember not to just paste the link without the ref tags, or it won't end up in list of references at the bottom of the article. See Referencing for beginners for more specifics.     Diff and hist links in a different location on my watchlist

    See this screenshot - the "diff" and "hist" buttons just moved from their usual spot next to the bullet, on my watchlist and other recent changes pages like Special:RecentChanges. When I log out and view Special:RecentChanges, it looks fine, so I think it's something to do with my account but I have no idea what.     How to cite individual places using GEOnet Names Server?

    I've become aware that, confusingly, GEOnet Names Server is not the same thing as GeoNames. I want to switch my citing practices to GEOnet since it's more reliable. The problem is, though, I can't find a specific url for any individual places on GEOnet. Whereas GeoNames has separate pages for each place, if I search on GEOnet and then click on any of the results, it doesn't link to a new page. The url is always just this: https://geonames.nga.mil/namesgaz/gnsquicksearch.asp

    I want to make my citations easily checkable by having a specific url and not making people search through the entire database. Is this possible to do on GEOnet? If not, then what should I do about citing coordinates for places?

    @3 kids in a trenchcoat: try asking the GEOnet technical support folks. There may be a way to format a URL that will act as a query. If they will not or cannot help you, you will need to create a citation that tells your reader how to do the query "manually". e.g., <ref>Search for "Foo City" at {{cite web|url=...}}</ref> -Arch dude (talk) 03:17, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft has not been accepted because it has not been submitted for review. If you were to submit it, I suspect it would be rejected because it appears to be a personal essay instead of an encyclopedia article (see WP:NOTESSAY).     Nightseeker Klemont Wikipedia accounts cannot be deleted because we legally must attribute edits to something for copyright purposes. However, if you would like your account to be renamed, that can be done.     CSS: max-width:50% does not work the same way as width:50%

    I'm trying to improve {{Oldtfdlist}} by making it responsively scale, but without it going above 50% width, which is what it's currently set to be always. I can't figure out how to do this. "max-width:50%" isn't the same as "width:50%" (when it would have enough text to display that wide, it wraps prematurely). "width:auto" "max-width:50%" doesn't work.     Hi Please somebody help me I need help!

    Many years ago when I first released my music after a while I put it on wikipedia but it was rejected and since i was under a lot of stress at that time I got angry and tried make it again until I got the name banned from creating. I never ever did anything or even attempted and I did so just because i was getting frustrated. I have requested wikipedia to remove the ban... but i don't know how the process works. Can you please help me? please. I need help. I have done anything I could including a solid article and references. I don't expect to be on wikipedia i just want the ban to be removed it's not my page my music project... the music of so many talented musicians. The name of the page is Discolor Blind and I have added it here but in the last one I tried to put my email then I was referred to you but I accidentally left my email there and i'm worried about spam can you please explain the situation to me? I mean my stupidity shouldn't cause such a permanent result otherwise I could go get many artists banned by doing this.     I'm sorry your experience with Wikipedia has been confusing and stressful. It sounds like you understand that you should not have tried to create a page about a project you are involved with. You say you do not want to create the page now, and that you understand you shouldn't, but that the protection on the page is causing you stress. You seem to view it as a punishment. Please don't view it as a punishment, and please don't let it cause you stress. If, at some point down the road Discolor Blind becomes sufficiently notable to have an article written about it, and someone unaffiliated with the band chooses to write an article about it, the article can be written as a draft and then, once there is something acceptable to put in article space, the protection can be lifted and the draft can be accepted.     Also, there is no need to provide lengthy quotes or the text you would like to write about Discolor Blind in the request to have the page unprotected. Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection#Current_requests_for_reduction_in_protection_level does say such requests are "generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand," but it wants you to link to a draft in draft space, not copy and paste your draft in the request for reduction in page protection. As you appear to have acknowledged above, you, as a member of Discolor Blind, should not be writing about Discolor Blind.     Dr Salvus, technically, a survey with one answer isn't a survey at all, as the one answer would always equal 100% of the responses. Now, if the respondents could choose to abstain from taking the survey, that could be considered the second choice. Is this related to Wikipedia in any way?     Dr Salvus, I'm a little confused. You don't need to wait for a bot to archive the discussion, nor does the bot have any bearing on the outcome of the discussion. If you want to gain a consensus, you should just wait a while to see what others in the WikiProject have to say, and then you or another editor can make whatever change is necessary.     Is the "album-notes" template outdated? Why not warn?

    I tried to use this template

    Template:Cite album-notes

    to insert two citations to record liner notes (at Michael Stanley), and I painstakingly filled the fields, but then got multiple errors when I previewed my edits. This template includes fields that are no longer used such as Artist and Publisherid, fields that are no longer used as described here such as Format, and fields that are required (when Format is included) such as URL. It looks like instead one should use this template

    I did that, redoing my citations completely, and now they are fine. But:

    1. Am I right that the "album-notes" template is obsolete?

    2. If so, why doesn't its template page say that, and discourage its use? In fact, why is it out there at all, to be found and used by unsuspecting editors?

    So, as far as I can tell, Cite album-notes redirects to Cite AV media notes - therefore, they are the same template and use of Album notes will just appear as media notes. The page for the Cite AV media notes template lists out all of the parameters that can be used. The page does not include any parameters such as "artist." If you want to use the name {{cite album-notes}} it is ok to do that though it is likely that someone will come along an rename it to {{cite AV media notes}}. cs1|2 template parameter names are never capitalized; |artist= and |publisherid= have been deprecated and are no longer supported; |format= (the source's file format) is still supported.
    You used |others=Michael Stanley. Did Michael Stanley actually contribute to the liner notes? If yes, Michael Stanley should be credited as an author (|author=Michael Stanley; if no, Michael Stanley should be omitted from the template.

    I solved my problem. When I tried later to look at that template page that I had linked above for "album-notes," Wikipedia redirected me to the "AV media notes" template, and that confused me, because earlier today I had been looking at a different page for an "album-notes" template that listed deprecated parameters and gave inaccurate descriptions. My browser history answered it. A Google search on something like "wikipedia template to cite album liner notes" had led me to this page, which I had used: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cite_album-notes/doc . I was trying to work quickly then, but *now* I notice from the url and the header that this page is from "Simple English Wikipedia" which was new to me but apparently is a totally different Wikipedia that still uses the different, outdated "album-notes" template, with a page for its parameters.

    I know parameter names are never capitalized, but in this discussion of them it was more clear to capitalize them. Now I am using quotes, if you prefer that.

    Michael Stanley did not contribute to the liner notes, they are uncredited (& just lists, rather than text) and are on two records by him. Here's why I listed him under the "others" parameter: 1) The error message when I used the deprecated "artist" tag suggested using "others" for that information instead, and 2) the note on the "AV media notes" template for the "others" field describes it as for "Artist, producers, etc." Are those two messages wrong? I am open to other ways to do this, but it seems like Michael Stanley's name should be included in the citation, somehow, as the artist on whose records the cited liner notes are. (Even if the record label and ID may be there, referencing liner notes by listing only the record title without the name of the artist seems to me unhelpful at best, and possibly ambiguous at worst.)     Yeah, simple.wiki is a different project with its own rules and ways of doing things; for whatever reason, editors there have not chosen to deprecate simple:Template:cite album-notes.
    |others= is for 'other' contributors to the cited source (illustrators, translators, etc). In this case the cited source is the text on the backside of the album jacket. You say that Michael Stanley did not contribute to that text so |others=Michael Stanley isn't really appropriate. The jacket art at Friends and Legends shows Michael Stanley in comparatively large type when compared to the album's actual title so you might do this:
    {{cite AV media notes |title=''Michael Stanley: ''Friends and Legends}} – the odd-seeming italic markup here gets the rendering right
    Michael Stanley: Friends and Legends (Media notes).
    {{cite AV media notes}} and {{cite AV media}} are in need of rewriting; there just hasn't been any progress made in that direction because no one yet has had the desire to attempt to herd the cats into a consensus corral; so we limp along with what we've got...

Two little kids were suspected -- and perhaps even tried/convicted -- of the killing of their father. I remember it being big news.     I think what Victor Schmidt is saying is that the murdered subject might not be notable enough for their own article. There's also WP:BIO1E for more info on determining notability of a person in regards to one event.

    Thanks. I guess my thinking was that the death was quite notable (its circumstances, etc.). Not that the victim himself was notable. So, I had assumed I'd find an article somewhere. I tried all of the obvious search terms. Nothing popped up. Perhaps, I will start the article. In the case of a "notable" death (and its article) ...     Administrators can search deleted titles. The content is not searchable but can be viewed with page history. Terry King (patricide) was deleted in 2009. The stated reason seems invalid. It was created by the user who deleted it but there were other contributors. A former article at Terry King has been deleted but it was about an unrelated photographer.     The deletion log [3] says "G7: One author who has requested deletion or blanked the page". G7 says: "If requested in good faith and provided that the only substantial content of the page was added by its author." It was deleted by the author who was an administrator. Admins can delete their own creations per G7 without a discussion if they are the only substantial contributor. In this case there were substantial contributions [4] by others so G7 was invalid, also in 2009 which had the same rule.     Take your time. It may take a year or two before you have an article ready. Make sure the articles you write are well researched, well sourced, well developed. Pick a topic that interests you and that you can find a lot of information on - I recommend a minor historical event somewhere in the 1800s or early 1900s (pre WWI), those are comparatively easy to come up with sources on and less controversial than post-war topics. Write the article, consider nominating it for DYK - the requirements are not as strict as for featured or good articles and going through the review process will help you learn how to improve the article and your writing in general. Do not nominate any article for FA or GA unless it has at least a B-class rating from a Wikiproject. If the article you are working on gets a rating of less than a B, ask the person who did the assessment what they are looking for that the article needs to improve on, but don't hound or harass them.     @Dr Salvus: They say that just creating a new article on WP is one of the hardest things you can do: and they are right. I've been editing on WP for around 12 years, and have created a number of articles; some are OK in my book, some are low-quality, some have been permanently deleted. But getting an article to 'Featured' or 'Good' status is at least an order of magnitude harder. Not once have I ever remotely considered putting myself through the immense hassle of getting any of 'my' articles to FA or GA status. Consider:
    1. Your sources must be impeccable. See WP:RELIABLE. Ascertaining whether a quoted source will stand up to the most extreme scrutiny is difficult enough in itself. If you don't know, you will certainly fail. Hint: your sources will almost certainly contain reliable sources themselves, usually in a 'Bibliography' section.
    2. During the FA or GA process, every single sentence in the article will be checked for grammar, spelling, meaning, coherence, and especially WP:NPOV. There will almost certainly be many tiny niggles about individual phrases. You must be able to express your thoughts/ideas coherently and expressively in the very best English.
    3. Your chosen referencing scheme (bwahaha, best of luck, fool) must be consistent and applied ruthlessly throughout the article. Completely archived sources will be almost certainly necessary.
    4. Once the article has achieved the exalted heights of FA or GA, there is nowhere to go except down. Many editors spend a lot of their time "defending" an article's status. You will find yourself spending much more time on talk pages attempting to refute changes to the article. There are some very, very aggressive editors on WP with their own axe to grind, and unless you can engage them in the very best manner (see WP:RESPECT) then your efforts may be set at naught. The upshot of all this is...
    5. Don't, unless you are utterly determined to defend 'your' corner against all-comers. The very worst thing is to see an article lose a GA or FA status, and then you will know the meaning of failure. I wish you the very best of luck, but you will need much more than that. Stick to to the easy stuff for some time.     It looks like you were blocked on Commons and the images were deleted because of copyright violations. You uploaded the images as "own work", meaning you were asserting that you took the photographs yourself, and created the logos yourself. However, the images appear elsewhere on the internet, and on Commons you state that you are a student and employee of the university and were given the photographs by the school.     Line feed character and check date values in a tweet

    Hi! I found the cite tweet template recently, but I have a problem with it. On this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta_FaZe one tweet has an error ""line feed character in |title= at position 57 (help); Check date values in: |date= (help)"", but I don't know what is causing this. Also, the date is "June 24, 2095" but I didn't put a date in the template?? No other tweets on the page have this problem??     (Added too late) (e/c) The template {{Cite tweet}} you used uses the {{cite web}} to format the whole reference and the {{TwitterSnowflake}} to format the date based on the tweet's ID.     Covid19

    I think all the information you Wikipedia have listed under covid19 is there but what about the other information that is pertinent? Like the WHO holding Event 201 led by Bill Gates in October of 2019 for a preliminary 'what if' then Covid happens two months later. Or how Gates Foundation and Clinton Foundation two biggest donors to the WHO, or how Bill Gates has been public about a worldwide vaccine, or how Faucci, Gates, and many others in political office now have skin in the game because they own patents on biological matter, which is against US law...When that was coming to light, reports claim this was moved to Wuhan so our patent holders here wouldn't be held liable under US law.     I requested a new username a year ago, but now see that my previous edits are still visible under my previous username, which is my actual name, which I would rather they not be.     I've already changed my username (the current one is the new one), it's just that all of my old contributions are still connected to the old one, they haven't been re-attributed.     @Hol-Tangings: I guess you only refer to the username in signatures. User talk:Hol-Tangings can be blanked but you have no edits there. Other talk pages shouldn't be blanked just because a user has changed name. You can find your old signatures at Special:Contributions/Hol-Tangings or "What links here" on your old user page, and manually change the name to your current name.     I am Matthew Berdyck and I have been targeted by Wikipedia editors for years

    Hi,

    I am not a Wikipedian. Please excuse me if I am posting this is the wrong place but I am at a loss at what to do about a situation that has been going on for many years.

    I am a controversial filmmaker, activist, journalist and founder of ToxicWasteSites.org. In my career, I’ve faced a virtual media black out of my work in no less than a thousand communities. Even though, I’ve been suppressed, my name pops up in the media from time to time, which of course gets added to Wikipedia articles.

    Every time someone enters my name into this site madness ensues. Editors start accusing me of self promotion - I certainly don’t need it - but as the person blowing the whistle on these scandals, often years ahead of the controversy, my name placed into these articles changes the timeline; if this timeline changes it has the effect of changing history and creating inaccurate articles. Furthermore, I’ve never made these edits, nor have I been an editor. It’s not me making the changes so it’s not self promotion.

    Examples:

    SPECIFIC ARTICLE —-> Warren County, Virginia - an editor claimed that the use of my name in the article and naming my organization was “promotional” and accused me of “aggressive self promotion.” Yet, the news article clearly credits both me and my .org for exposing the scandal. This is relevant because two years later, when it hit national media, my name was erased by the Washington Post and 400 other media outlets. In reality, the word “aggressive” was applied to two edits on the entire site, which I only noticed after the talk pages appeared in my search results.

    SPECIFIC ARTICLE —-> Morris Operation - I spent close to $10,000 investigating and exposing the Morris Operation for my former newspaper. Once I created the article, someone came along and expanded the Wikipedia entry, adding a link to my media outlet. Later, an editor can be seen claiming my newspaper was “fake news.” They then took all of my research and sourcing that I worked to create, removed my newspaper link and resourced the article with the very sourcing I created in the first place.

    Impersonation: In my career, I been the subject of intense public controversy, and subject to political retaliation. At one point, someone came here, posing as me, created a massive flame war with editors, which resulted in volumes of defamatory content being created; it readily entered my search results and I was left with years of SEO work to remove the bad links. At that time, an editor stated “The name Matthew Berdyck will never appear on Wikipedia” and since then, it never has, even when it’s included in places like ABC News, Yahoo News, Roanoke Times, Royal Examiner, and Creators.com.

    I’m at a loss here. At no time have I ever used Wikipedia for self promotion, nor would I even benefit from it, nor would I even care, other than every time an editor targets my name, it creates negative search results that damage my career and in the interest of preserving history.

    At least once a year, someone comes here and starts a flame war using my name even though I have no connection to this site. It seems like a few editors have been involved in this. I’ve noted that anyone who criticizes these people who stand up for my inclusion are immediately accused of “attacking” them and are banned.

    I’m sorry for the drama but as Wikipedians, all of you should be aware of how corrosive it could be to a public figure’s life to be the subject of media suppression. For if the media says I do not exist, via suppression, then my life doesn’t exist.

    Matt, we at the help desk cannot respond to such a general set of accusations. We can however tell you how to respond to each specific problem when it occurs. When you have an issue with any edit, respond on the talk page for the relevant article. If that fails, come here and tell us the name of the affected article, and we can try to tell you how to proceed. Although it is not mandatory, I suggest you create an account and use it.     IP, if the problem were that a person was being included in troublesome ways, we would have to move with urgency per the biography of living persons policy. What you're saying it seems is rather that a person is being left out. That makes it a run of the mill content dispute. What I would suggest you do is create an account (a static IP might do too) and declare your conflicts of interest as instructed at WP:DISCLOSE, and then make specific requests for changes to the article as instructed at WP:COIREQ. Then, when you encounter editors that disagree with your position, you enter dialog with them and follow the steps at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution until they are resolved. It may sound like a lot, I think it's doable taking it one step at a time. At any rate, that's the best advice I got. If you have specific editors who you think are acting in bad faith and deliberately trying to erase you out of spite, you could report them to WP:ANI, but you'd need some evidence backing up your allegations to take it up with the admins in that way.
