Thanks for the shout out on the Project page and the review. I am going to try to be more active this year, both on improving articles and reviwing articles that others have worked on. I never really quit editting. Most of my work the last 4 years was WikiGnome stuff. Cheers...Cuprum17 (talk) 14:32, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Misspelling

While reviewing the article Dantzig Alley British Cemetery I came across a possible misspelling in the paragraph "Foundation". In the last sentence is the word "Areoplane" possibly a misspelling of the word "Aeroplane"? I am not familiar enough with French geography to determine an accurate understanding. I will go ahead with an assessment and leave the question of possible misspelling for you to answer. Cuprum17 (talk) 13:41, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Further decorations

Per this, are you interested in adding the Croix de Guerre (1939-1945) and the DFC (US) to his gongs? Moriori (talk) 01:42, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I mention both of those awards in the article body but didn't include the text of the citation since they were not published in the London Gazette. I could put the text of the recommendations for the US/French awards in but I intend to take this article for A-Class review at Milhist and the sourcing is looked at pretty closely there. I'm not sure that this website would be considered a reliable source for the recommendations. I'll have look to see if I can find a more reliable source. Libraries are opening up tomorrow for level 2 lockdown and I can think of a couple of books there that I could use for citing the recommendations. I will scope them out next time I'm in town. Alan Peart

Hi,

Thanks for your message. I am new to Wiki editing as you will have seen and note your comments re his auto-biography as the main source and tone used. I wanted to add more detail to his page which was thread-bare when I first saw it. I do have his auto-biography but I also have several other sources, including several military history books, scans of his flight log book as well as 4.5hrs of audio interview from the late 90's. These recordings have been passed to me by the interviewer with permission to use for any non-profit positive use, such as Wiki. I am still in the process of transcribing them and working out the best use of them. I have other books on order which will also help.

My goal is to provide a detailed account of Alan Peart's WW2 experiences from his training, active service and some post-war information. Hopefully you will see a wider range of references over the next few weeks. I work full time but intend to spend some time over the Christmas holidays editing the page.

Thanks - Drew Brown --DrewBrown37 (talk) 13:14, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DrewBrown37, regarding sources, I suggest reviewing [Wikipedia:Reliable sources]. That explains what is acceptable and what isn't. It is important that all information in an article is verifiable by others. This may mean that you aren't able to use log books (unless they have been placed online). Cheers, Zawed (talk) 20:58, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the nudge - I've been slammed at work for the past few days before the Xmas holiday kicks in. Hello, Zawed,

Hmmmm. You wrote two very lengthy and incisive GAN reviews over a holiday season. You just may be suffering from a well-earned case of burnout. Understandable. However, I am curious as to when I can expect the return of Zawed the Intrepid.

Please understand I am not crowding you for the GAN on Noltenius. I so respect your reviews, I am content to wait. Meantime, I moved on to an article that drastically needed a rewrite: Erwin Böhme. I rewrote it from texts from my personal bookshelf, so it is 100% verified "actual factual". You will probably be thrilled to know I used 'sfnp' cites, even if I do not understand them. I just posted the rewritten version of Erwin Böhme, and plan to let the new version gather more categories, etc for a while before nominating it for, you got it, GA status. More later, I guess.Georgejdorner (talk) 23:12, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi George, that review is on my radar to do, it is just that I keep getting distracted by other projects! I will get to it shortly. Zawed (talk) 00:44, 12 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Des Scott

Great to see Des Scott is GA -- nice one. But there is something which has me scratching my head -- Having been promoted to squadron leader, Scott was posted to Bentley Priory, the headquarters of Fighter Command, in a staff role for six months. While at Bentley, he was part of a group working on night-fighting tactics. During this time, he was awarded a bar to his DFC for his later service with No. 3 Squadron. Later service? Cheers. Moriori (talk) 19:37, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moriori, thanks for the feedback. That "later service" is a clumsy effort to refer the period he served with No. 3 Squadron after receiving the DFC. I didn't want readers to think it had been awarded as a result of his staff duties. I'll have a go at rephrasing shortly. Zawed (talk) 07:42, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Kia ora!

Kia ora Zawed, just wanted to drop you a note as I recently came across your article on Ropata Wahawaha and wanted to compliment you on the great work! I'm also one of the NZ editors active in the Aotearoa NZ user group and as part of our promotions of NZ WP content I featured the article on the public-facing Facebook page (Wikipedia Aotearoa New Zealand). It has generated a bit of interest and it was great to be able to feature quality content on a NZ topic. Cheers! MurielMary (talk) 09:09, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, I should have also invited you to join the Wikipedia NZ group on facebook! The group has about 170 members and is a closed group for editors to discuss matters related to editing. The page (mentioned above, where I shared your article) is a public page. You're welcome to join the group if you'd like! MurielMary (talk) 20:39, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
MurielMary, thank you for the compliment. That article is up for GA review at the moment so hopefully it won't be long before it is promoted. I have joined up the facebook group, and see now that the Hardham article has made an appearance on the public page. Zawed (talk) 08:07, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, when I came here to post the second time I saw the notification about Hardham so popped that up on the public page too. Great to see quality content on NZ topics! MurielMary (talk) 08:10, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is. I work mainly on NZ military history articles, but a current on/off project is Jean Batten, which I hope to get to FA later this year. It's been a lot of work but is well on the way. I see you wrote the article on her statue at Auckland Airport. Zawed (talk) 08:13, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Promotion of William Hardham

Congratulations, Zawed! The article you nominated, William Hardham, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Gog the Mild (talk) via FACBot (talk) 12:06, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Prison Valley

Good. You're on. Thank you. I have a couple of upgrades aimed towards FA which I am currently trying to wrap up. (Third English Civil War and Battle of Halidon Hill.) While I am doing that I will put out some feelers for a map. Meanwhile I have made a tentative start - User:Gog the Mild/Battle of Prison Valley - largely cut and pasted from the other landings. Feel free to play around there. Once I have put my current pair to bed I will start adding text myself in a serious way. How does that sound?

Once this is done we can may be think about Battle of Maleme, Retreat to Sfakion and even Battle of Crete. Gog the Mild (talk) 10:45, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Crikey, that was a quick response. Am about to head off to bed myself. Tomorrow I'll grab my Crete books from the office and start thinking about setting the scene at Prison Valley. Later on I would be particularly interested in Maleme given the NZ involvement there. Zawed (talk) 10:52, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Les Pearce

I don't often venture into this area, but I've created a military bio: Les Pearce. I'm sure you have heaps of sources in your private library with which to improve this. Schwede66 22:52, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have a look. I have the official histories for NZ in Korea and the Vietnam war so may be able to add some content from those but I don't have much else for the post-WWII period. Zawed (talk) 09:59, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've written another bio that might interest you: John White (jurist) Schwede66 12:25, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work on that article. I have a couple of biographies of Freyberg, will have a look to see if there is anything in them relating to White that could be added. Zawed (talk) 22:26, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The Dominion Post obituary is quite an interesting read; Freyberg had some very complimentary things to say about White. I wonder where the 1944 photo showing Freyberg and White comes from. It's not in the National Library collection. I've made a category of all the war photos that White took that I could find. Schwede66 23:08, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Amazingly well written article. I have promoted it to GA. Thank you for your great work! - Aussie Article Writer (talk) 16:35, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Aussie Article Writer, thank you for the kind words and for looking at this article, much appreciated. Reviewing the GA review page itself, I notice that it looks like you used a review template from a failed GA nomination, as some of the language e.g. the header portion and the final paragraph refers to a failed nomination. Could I trouble you to revise this for consistency so as to avoid confusion for other readers? Thanks, Zawed (talk) 01:35, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. - Aussie Article Writer (talk) 04:50, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
