Furman Hall

Sorry, but I don't live in Nashville and have never been to Vanderbilt. The two "Furman Hall" photos that I added were from the Smithsonian and Flickr You might be able to find an online photo that is pre-1923 or otherwise in the public domain. Then you can use a Wikipedia tutorial to find the right form for adding the image to the Wikipedia or Commons universe. Hope this is helpful. By the way, Gelert's 1897 statue depicting a "Wounded American Soldier" was a gold medal recipient at the Tennessee Centennial in Nashville. It shows a bandaged warrior, who cannot be identified as either a Union or Confederate soldier. Perhaps for this reason, it never received the funding to be remade in bronze. There may be a book somewhere with a photo of the plaster version at the 1897 World's Fair. Unfortunately, thus far I've only found a washed-out photocopy. Better than nothing. WikiProject Novels Collaboration

re: Edith Wharton -- yes, but if we don't add a scholarship category, others can't add to it. Yes, I sometimes get it wrong the first time, but that's what Wikipedia is! You aren't helping anyone by erasing everything and keeping the entry so slim! ( Critic 11)

Talkback

Hello, Zigzig20s. You have new messages at RHaworth's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Categories

Hi. You've got the process correct up to the stage where you're putting something in the edit window. To create a cat, you need to put in the edit window the name of the category or categories which you want to be the parent of your new category. So in the Dallas County, Alabama example, you want Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Dallas County, Alabama to sit within the equivalent category for the state: i.e. Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Alabama. Also, before the closing square brackets, it is good practice to add a "|" and then the name of the county, because that will ensure it sorts in the correct alphabetical order on the parent category page. So in the edit window for Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Dallas County, Alabama, I have changed it from Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Dallas County, Alabama to Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Alabama|Dallas County. Of course you could add more categories in the edit window if there are any other relevant ones; just remember that you are always making a "child" and it needs to link upwards to at least one "parent". I've fixed the talk page at Lahure by removing the redirect template and replacing it with the Disambiguation Project template. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 18:15, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mississippi pictures

Thanks for writing. I've found the best place to find pictures is on Flickr. Many have been uploaded without copyright protection. Wikipedia Commons also has a lot of old Library of Congress pictures. I wish I had more time to travel and take pictures. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 14:32, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for January 11

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited William S. Vaughn, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Brighton, New York (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Wagners

Hi Zigzig. I should have some freee time this weekend, so I'll make a start with Henry. Arthur can follow next. I've more or less finished an initial read of Henry's chapter in that book, so I reckon I can make a decent start. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 23:24, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the redirect ... hmmm, it looks like that bit below the line ("This is a redirect from a page that has been moved/renamed...") has been added recently to moved pages that are now a redirect. I've certainly never seen it before, but when I look at some of the redirect pages for articles I have moved from userspace, it appears on them as well. Must be an across-the-board change. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 21:24, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, a page move will always automatically leave a redirect. I was always under the impression that a post-move redirect in userspace could not be deleted because it would affect the edit history, but I've just spent some time looking around various help pages and policy pages and now I'm not so sure! You may be able to request deletion of the redirect by putting this at the top of the page: {{db-g7}} (this is the speedy deletion template for "author requests deletion"). Try it on one; I'm not sure if it is "allowed", but let me know either way! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 22:13, 20 January 2014 (UTC) — To get to the redirect page itself rather than the article to which the redirect is pointing, you'll need to add &redirect=no to the end of the URL (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Zigzig20s/NathanielThomas_Lupton&redirect=no. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 22:14, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's an interesting question. I don't know how significant the monetary/resource cost is – probably minimal at an individual level, but across the whole of Wikipedia perhaps more noticeable. I'm not even sure where to go to ask that question ... I've never been that good on the technical side of Wikipedia (LOL). I've always found the Village Pump pages useful for finding answers to Wikipedia-related questions. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 22:38, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the picture

It was my mistake to remove the picture as you pointed out on my talk page.

I was going to contact you about Elkman Infobox Generator, which would simplify your editing if you are willing to use it. Existing and some other properties with refnums before some date in 2010 have the infobox set out with the refnum. Having the refnum keeps the page off of the right hand box for Wikipedia talk:National Register of Historic Places, which is the list I have been fixing. The NRIS database and the elkman infobox generator are not guaranteed to be free from errors, so it is good to look at your sources also.

I have noticed that you have made heavy use of NRHP.com, which is useful, but it is just a commercial listing of the same NRIS database. But NRHP.com does not discriminate. A small fraction of its listings were never listed (e.g. owner objection, etc) or removed (delisted). So some caution must be applied to that and other lists that copy the NRIS data.

To answer another question of yours, I can't put the maps on those sites. If you can supply the geocoordinates for the site and set " | locmapin = Mississippi," the map will be generated. Good wishes in adding to MS sites. KudzuVine (talk) 18:06, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • NRIS database is the official listing except for new listings/delistings. The Weekly listing gives the updates and also listings back in time.

I have done much on South Carolina sites including many plantations, but school keeps me busy much of the time these days. KudzuVine (talk) 18:43, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

after all these years

you still manage to catch articles which your reqphoto seem so incredibly absurd. Campbell barracks actually has signs that say no photographs, believe it or not. In all WP:AGF - think of something else please. It is a military establishment that has strict control on public access and is not the sort of place where even media with permits are allowed much leeway. After the tasmanian rocks all these years ago, where no one actually goes.... oh well have a good new year. satusuro 16:18, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

exactly the same stance with isolated rocks in Tasmania.

Please understand in WP:AGF - you created a dumb request - a highly secretive (for good reason) army installation - you want a photo? You want me to pull my head in. No, sorry there are actually restrictions on that site, and if you dont like my response, too bad. It would be foolhardy to actually ask someone else to take a photo there, and asking them to break federal laws and regulations. Sorry. satusuro 16:40, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am not the owner of anything on wikipedia - look at the CC business - nothing is owned, but I do know common sense when it comes to military sites. Have fun when you are in perth, but from your tagging isolated rocks in tasmania you give me no confidence that you know what you are tagging most of the time. There are lots of photographs taken already for commons about perth - if you are here, dont forget to actually catch up with locals - they might actually give you an idea what to take, rather than tagging. satusuro 16:45, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just a reminder, if I see a request and I know the location or the person, which from my experience it will not be legally or practically possible to get a CC based photo and see it as a ridiculous request, I will revert it, regardless of your personal feelings - specially in the example of the campbell barracks - which could get a person into legal problems. I am not a sort of oh what a great idea responder to requests that might put a potential photographer in physicial or legal danger, but from your response that echoes your response all those years ago - I will in fact alert you to the legal or practical issues at the same time seeing you seem to be a sensitive soul. Have a safe journey to australia, and enjoy your interactions with the liberal politicians. satusuro 16:54, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I look forward to seeing how many of your tasmania photo requests you actually find humanly possible to do when you get there. Good luck. satusuro 16:56, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pretty sure you made similar claims about an impending visit before when confronted about the blatant overtagging. Locals advised you then of the remoteness of the places you were tagging from Perth and the distance from any sort of transport. Seems to be a recurring theme... January 2014

I take no pleasure in reminding you the pointlessness of the creation of the stub https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_James%27_Church,_Greenough,_Western_Australia

First its only notability was from a deadlink based on none other than a liberal party website. There was no attempt to discern the denomination, in either the lead and only sentence, in the title of the article, or in the project tag at the rear (Christianity is irrelevent and a pointless indicator).

If it had been created in good faith, the denomination (Anglican) should have been identified in the category, in the lead sentence, and some effort beyond a liberal party unstable website refernce, as well as an Anglicanism project tag. Since none of that was done, and a WP:SHOUTING edit summary, I fail to see where the editing of such a stub can go, there was no attempt at clarifying anything to do with the WP:N, WP:V of such a church. satusuro 17:25, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Orientation

Trust your travels went smoothly.

Your missed the Perth meetup yesterday, you could have had the opportunity to meet real live wikipedians.

First WikiProject Perth no longer exists as such, you have registered in an inactive project, almost 90% of the peoples names on that list are no longer active or regular editors here on wikipedia en. Try finding the talk page for the project - it redirects to the WA project. Someone forgot to turn out the lights.

Second, before you get too carried away with offers of photographs, please take a very close look at

and your enthusiasms for suburbs you need to take a close look at

and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Cottesloe,_Western_Australia

and also the other locations you claim you might access.

Also note that the commons categories, image titles, and descriptions are a real mess, no one appears to check for errors or make corrections or cleans them up and there are repeatedly serious errors throughout the collection attributed to Perth and its surrounds. Please do not add to the errors, check with other editors - it is well worth speaking/messaging other active editors when here in Western Australia.

Also please note that Perth should preferably never be stated as Perth, Australia - no such place exists - it is Perth, Western Australia.

Very important if you are out and about take care of the sun/uv rating (current Sunday 2nd February 9.5 Very High) see http://www.bom.gov.au/wa/forecasts/perth.shtml - UV Alert from 8:20 am to 4:40 pm, UV Index predicted to reach 13 [Extreme] also http://www.bom.gov.au/uv/ - the cool breeze from the east in the city area is deceptive - the uv can burn you badly if you are not prepared.

Have a safe stay - and try to communicate with locals, it might make some of your plans/ideas a lot easier satusuro 04:16, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As I warned you if you are just from the uk - it can kill (I know of a number people who have died from incurable skin cancer/melanoma here in western australia :( ) Your isolated thing doesnt work, as in most cases things like meetups and wikimanias are in fact a very useful way to understand the users are humans too (not sharks) and are actually things beyond their usernames (how many people do you know who are called in off-wiki situations First of January, my equivalent in Javanese)... and it is possible to interact a thousand times better than on line interactions. Get a HAT, get more covering clothes, and use sun screen. Apply something on your burn, it can be problematic if left untouched by something to reduce it. I will look at the commons issues later tonight or tommorow. Take care, and dont pride yourself in your anonyimity or obscurity, make sure you go to London Wikimania 2014, and I will buy you a beer or tea, whichever fits. satusuro 08:55, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

lack of local knowledge

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Garrick_Theatre_%28Guildford%29&diff=593687313&oldid=583758642 is not a good idea - the photograph (as I have suggested in a previous message, never ever assume that commons titles or descriptions are correct... many uploads on commons are by non english speaking visitors who have no idea where they are....) is not of the garrick theatre -

Guildford has a very good set of signs and tourist information what would clearly not identify the building as what you claim, and it simply goes back to check first with a local - putting something up like that simply shows how easy it is to be caught out. satusuro 10:02, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

However, please refrain from attacking me aggressively for being foreign and not local. The appropriate way to communicate with me would be to say, "Thank you very much for your edit, but I believe this is incorrect..." I have never interacted with someone as blunt as yourself, in life or online. - you must have indeed had a very sheltered life, I am neither attacking you and if you dont understand the problems and extraordinary ease of online misinterpretation - you are projecting a lot of stuff back on to me that is not intended in any way.

I have already stated (now third time) - never take commons titles or descriptions at face value - and if you had been actually walking between the Polo club oval on the helena river flat, and the former Guildford Cinema - you might have seen some signs on the route, and you would have learnt a lot! If you have been to Guildford, it would be useful to know if you have walked the area... If you havent I could offer a lot of clues as to your journey - it is up to you. satusuro 10:54, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

And just in case you misinterpret that as well, I could do the polo club article in less than an hour if you ask... I happen to know something about the Guildford locality and related subjects. But if you are going to take that offer the wrong way, I have lots of other wikipedia things that I am doing anyways. cheers. satusuro 11:51, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have a very large amount of unloaded photos of guildford on hard drive storage, and an intimate knowledge of guildford - as well as the capacity to go and do photos on demand in next day or so.. can i help with anything.. ? satusuro 12:24, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, and my apologies for what might seem a slight brusqueness - will see what I can do in the short term, will let you know when it is up... satusuro 12:50, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

One very small very little request and very small favour for the day - would you please stop tagging articles that I have obviously created with reqphotos, it would be really appreciated, as it really gets quite un nerving as I am sure you have no idea how trollish it looks... I have never asked anyone for reqphoto ever in my 90.000 + edits, it would make me feel less under obligation to help (where I can) regarding Guildford and it surrounds. I am sure you would appreciate that I dont go wandering through your edits and try tagging anything, or any other persons edits - specially with anything like that. It would be much appreciated if you could consider that withjout replying, but just accepting the request.

Also I learnt an (about an hour or so ago) important person at the place in my work place died yesterday, any offers I made about photos in the short term are delayed indefinitely - possibly for a week or so... satusuro 15:11, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your sympathetic and understanding answer makes me agree with you, a waste of time, bye satusuro 00:45, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Old Ship

Hi Zigzig. Hope you enjoyed your time in Brighton! Yes, The Old Ship is on my to-do list; part of it (the former Assembly Room to the rear) is listed, although oddly enough the rest of the building is excluded. In any case there's lots of info in my books and other sources, so plenty of scope for an article. Not sure when it will be—I need to finish both Wagners first—and likewise with Kings Gardens. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 13:28, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Although Chichester Terrace (here's a pic I took in 2009) is part of the Kemp Town development, I tend to agree that each separate part of the estate needs a separate article (Chichester Terrace, Arundel Terrace, Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent), given that they are each separately listed at Grade I. Actually, List of books set in Brighton and Hove (or maybe just Brighton) would be worth writing – I have seen a comprehensive list (mainly novels) somewhere in one of my books! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 14:01, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Boodles, in general

Boodles have set up COI accounts on here to edit the articles associated with them, so I have removed any puffery or promotion like wording from all associated articles. Also [[Boodles (company)|Boodles]] is the correct link. Cheers. Murry1975 (talk) 18:34, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I left director in, I removed the unneed- there is a link there for this reason. Murry1975 (talk) 18:37, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate pic

Hi – on the image you want to get rid of, go into the edit window and put the following code below the =={{int:filedesc}}== heading:

{{Duplicate|''Name of the image you want to keep''}}

This will then add it to the category of duplicate images which will be "speedily deleted" by a Commons admin. Nice church BTW (and nice weather over there!) Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:51, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Using parks as an example: start by typing the name of the new category (exactly as you want it to appear, and including the Category: prefix) in the Search box. You'll see a page that looks like this: [1] Then click the red link where it says Create the page "Category:Parks in Cottesloe, Western Australia" on this wiki!. In the edit window that comes up, put at least one parent category under which you want your new category to sit. In this example, I would suggest Category:Cottesloe, Western Australia and Category:Parks in Perth, Western Australia. (You'll need to include square brackets around them.) When you save the page, the new category has been created and linked to its parents. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 15:42, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've fixed it by creating Category:Parks in Cottesloe, Western Australia first and then completing the creation of the Grant Marine Park category (first link you added to my talk page) by adding "Category:Parks in Cottesloe, Western Australia" as its parent. On the second link, the bit where it says "This category contains only the following page: ... Grant Marine Park" is because you had accidentally created a page called Grant Marine Park rather than a category. Remember to always use the Category: prefix when creating a new category. The other thing to keep in mind is that when you are creating a series of categories, always start at the highest level and go downwards: so start by creating "Category:Parks in XXX" and then do all the "child" categories (Category:AAA Park, Category:BBB Park etc.), remembering to link each one to "Category:Parks in XXX" as you go. Then if you have further sub-categories (e.g. Category:Birds in AAA Park), create those next and link them to the appropriate parent. Hope that helps. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 16:23, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a speedy deletion template ([2]), as I think it qualifies for the speedy deletion criteria. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 18:18, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Difficult to say, really ... I suppose the tag isn't universally popular (tags on Wikipedia seem to be a regular source of disagreements between editors). Best thing to do is just to state your case on the relevant user talk pages and explain why you are adding the tags, but if you face too much resistance just move on to something else. Note that the tag will automatically add the article to a hidden category, "Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in wherever", which gives a useful overview of what is needed in a particular geographical area. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 19:27, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like the incorrect Westwood Park category has already been deleted, so that's fine; the code you would use to add it to the speedy deletion requests page would be this (you can tweak the wording in the second part

Regarding the date templates, they are maintenance templates which add the article to a hidden category depending on whether dates are in dd/mm/yyyy, mm/dd/yyyy or yyyy/mm/dd format. Apparently they are being added automatically to articles at the moment to assist with the monitoring of date formats. If you have written an article in a particular date format and want it to be preserved, you can manually add the following code at the top or bottom of the article – it won't be visible, but will add the article to the hidden category:

Hall of fame

Just following up an earlier conv - I took over 700 pictures in Kalgoorlie last year (all yet to be uploaded, as I've been busy with other things), but the Miners Hall of Fame is only open a couple of days a week (is behind a locked gate at several hundred metres' distance the rest of the time) and is also a *long* walk from the centre of Kalgoorlie (there's no buses to or anywhere near it). Not sure if you were aware of that, but thought I'd let you know. Orderinchaos 17:08, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Wagner dynasty

Hi! Yes, definitely an article for Melchior. I've taken some notes from that book I was talking about, so I'll have enough material for a reasonable article. H.M. Wagner's brother George might be possible as well ... the book has a chapter about him which I haven't read yet, and I believe he founded at least one school in Brighton, so I'll see what else I can come up with. Progress on H.M.W. is slow but steady: still a lot of work to do on the controversies, especially. Then I'll need to think about Arthur! Hi – yes, I'll get down there at some point in the next few days. When I went past on the bus on Saturday (that's when I noticed it had opened) I didn't see any significant changes from when it was the Rock 'n' Roller Bar. Unfortunately the main part of the building (i.e. the bit that used to be Blockbuster Video) is still empty; the bar is only in the corner part of the building. Maybe the two parts are in different ownership. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 13:21, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Brighton and Hove

Hello! Sorry I haven't had a chance to go down there recently; have been unexpectedly busy off-Wiki. I expect to have more time after this weekend to resume article and photography work, weather permitting of course! (It has turned wet today, but the forecast is improving.) If I haven't been down to Gothic House before 18th May, I will certainly have a chance on that day, because on that day I will be going on an tour inside Embassy Court (as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe). Of course I will take lots of pics inside, and hopefully from the roof terrace if we go up there! On the same day I will be going on a tour of the cemeteries, so I might get a chance to photograph graves of notable people. Let me know if there are any graves you would particularly like me to look out for, for articles you have done in the past.

Henry Michell Wagner is very close to completion now; and recently I have been working on a series of Brighton-related articles which I will put live soon. (Architects, buildings and suburbs.) However, another thing I have been working on but have got sidetracked away from, and which you may like to help with, is a complete overhaul of List of people from Brighton and Hove. After some discussion with others, it was decided that a table format would be better and would make unreferenced entries more obvious, so I have started building it starting at the "A" section. Meanwhile, I have been purging dubious entries and putting them on the talk page, formatting and adding new references, and adding more info where possible. As you will see, I have only got to the "B" section! I'll be working on it from time to time, and if you feel like helping out you'd be very welcome: it's a very large job. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 11:52, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again – thanks for your notes. Sadly the Embassy Court tour has completely sold out (there are five in total during May), so that will have to wait until next year; same with the cemeteries tour. The festival has obviously been very popular this year! On Prestonville, I saved a map from OpenStreetMap somewhere on my computer, so I'll upload it later. Not sure where to put it in the article; I might have to shuffle some of the pics. If you want to add to the List of people from Brighton and Hove, don't worry about the table formatting; just add any new entries as a normal bullet point below the table and I'll come along and sort out the formatting. It will be a long time before I get to the bottom and get it all formatted, so it's very much a work in progress. Elm Grove is a very interesting area, especially the views across the city of course, so there's plenty to write about; more to come over the next day or two. I have a lot more pics to upload as well, so keep an eye on the link to the Commons category. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 08:38, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi – thanks for the link to the video; lots of interesting scenes in there! The "Alice Dreams" shop is down Gardner Street in the North Laine, the men near the end of the video were at the top of Madeira Place on St James's Street (with a brief glimpse of a Brighton & Hove bus going past), with the Brighton Wheel and the Gelateria diLuca ice cream place also visible, and I've been trying to work out which church the married couple are standing outside. It looks very familiar, but I can't place it! I had a look in Category:Music videos but there are no "geographical" subcategories, so at the moment it's probably best just to keep it within Category:Brighton in fiction (I also looked at Category:Music in Brighton and Hove, but it's not really in the scope of that.) Wiki Loves Pride 2014

Hi Zig. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --Another Believer (Talk) 16:02, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gay culture in Perth

Kind of unfortunate you didn't reach out to the Wikipedian community during your stay in Perth - we could probably have given you some tips much earlier in your stay.

I don't doubt that your representation of the elite western suburbs or younger people in that region is pretty spot-on - there's plenty of Perth people who regard the western suburbs set as another species - but there's a world of Perth outside there, especially in the north and south. In electoral terms, there's 42 state electorates in Perth but just three of them (Cottesloe, Nedlands and Churchlands) in the west.

Friends of mine in the teaching profession have noticed the current generation coming through are quite socially libertarian and compassionate in their views compared to previous generations - although it should be emphasised they all work in the state system. Thinking across my friends, a fair number are gay, bring their partners to social events or pubs or etc and nobody really cares. Big change from even 10 or 15 years ago. General attitude in Perth to most things is "as long as it's not in my face, I don't care", and that has afforded a greater degree of tolerance in Perth than, for example, one sees in Adelaide or Brisbane. It also unfortunately has a "cloak of invisibility" effect. Melbourne has the virtue of being big, people have been moving there for years and it's overall a more socially progressive place comparable with Vancouver, Berlin or San Francisco due in part to a very different history (research Deakinite liberalism if you're ever bored). Every country seems to have one...

As for venues - there used to be a strong but highly insular scene in Perth based around the Court, Connections and a Thursday night venue (which moved and changed names several times), but the whole scene basically died because of its exclusion of newcomers or those different to its predetermined norms which was probably a product of the pre-1989 days. To this day the Pride Parade/Fair Day is run by the same people who ran it in the 1990s, and all it's done is shrink - it's almost shut down at least three times. Full legalisation in 2002 and increasing community acceptance combined with the refusal of the organised gay community to adapt means younger people have found ways around it, such as attending "straight" venues or interfacing with university Queer Collectives. People in fields like art or drama pretty much have their own subculture. Fun world of smaller cities...

As for WLP, I'd thought about helping it out but really can't think of too many things we can help with! In Wikipedia article terms there are no links for the relevant legislation or other such things, which could well be developed. Orderinchaos 02:10, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

Hi – sorry, my Wikipedia time has been severely restricted recently. I had a look at the talk page for Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden and tried several things to fix the redlink, but nothing worked; it definitely is to do with the / symbol. I think it's an unavoidable problem with that character in template space. There are a few other characters that make templates go funny, I think: certainly the "|" does. Anyway, it's not too much of a problem because if you click the "Review or comment" link, it will take you to the template (albeit in edit mode). Also, more importantly, the template does appear correctly on the T:TDYK page, as do your others. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:47, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Quite often a nomination will sit for a while before being picked up – it seems to be random. Back in the days when I was first involved with DYK (years ago!), noms were usually reviewed within a few days; now, it's more like weeks. Every nom does eventually get some eyes on it, though. I'll see what I can do, but I'm afraid I will be very pressed for time for the next few weeks (on-wiki for literally a few minutes at a time only). QPQ review requirement

I've replied on my talk page, but thought it might help to mention it here too.

Once you have five or more DYK credits, which I believe you do, you have to review one other nomination for each article you self-nominate. See WP:DYKR for details. None of us really know how to review a nomination before we try. If you do your best and note in your comments that it is the first one that you've reviewed, others should be tolerant of any shortcomings! My advice would be to pick an article about which you have some understanding of the subject matter, you read the language(s) concerned, and where the sources especially for the hook are available free online. If you have any questions just drop a note on my talk page. Edwardx (talk) 21:18, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, normally I would suggest that you sit tight and wait for another reviewer, then sit tight and wait for your hook to be promoted. With around 70 approved hooks on the nomination page, it might take some time till you see it on the main page. Now, with everything so upended at DYK over the last month, we're all trying to keep a level head and I also suggest you do the same. Best, Yoninah (talk) 13:20, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why? Number 57 16:07, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If this gets deleted, this will completely discourage me. See that the alleged vandal has deleted info from the article while the AFD is on, perhaps to make the article look weaker? Actually, I really would like to restore the 'bibliography' section--am I allowed to?Zigzig20s (talk) 16:10, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, someone else who agrees with me has done it...Zigzig20s (talk) 16:24, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If it's referenced to reliable, third party sources that discuss the subject in depth, then the likelihood is that it won't be deleted. If it is, then you need to accept that the subject does not meet the notability criteria – it's a learning process.
Also, if the IP is deleting stuff during the AfD, note that in the discussion. People will read it (as you've seen). I don't think it's wise for you to continue reverting on the article. Number 57 16:32, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is it wise for an unregistered address to edit the article and delete info? Anyway, I did not restore the section; someone else did.Zigzig20s (talk) 16:41, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No it isn't - both of you need to stop. Number 57 17:35, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I have started "asking for permission" to edit now. And will take a break from Wikipedia after this. I have been editing Wikipedia for years, creating pages, have had DYKs recently (today for example), but I am being treated on the same level as an unregistered account who tries to delete referenced articles about prominent people. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 17:48, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Are you suggesting some editors should get different treatment when they behave badly? You made nine reverts of a perfectly legitimate (albeit malformed) AfD template on the article. Both of you are lucky that you aren't blocked. Your contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated by other users, but you also need to accept that not everyone necessarily shares the same opinion regarding notability as yourself, and some are very ill-informed. Numerous articles that I created have been AfD'd by editors who don't understand notability guidelines, but rather than throw a hissy fit, I just presented a strong case in the AfD debate, and they've all been kept (I don't believe any of the near-5,000 articles I've created deleted). You should just do the same and get on with it. Number 57 18:04, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I am taking a break from Wikipedia now. Someone else mentioned WP:GNG or WP:BEFORE on the AFD page. I don't have time to read all the Wikipedia policies because I find it more important to create referenced pages about prominent topics. It has never been a problem. But now I am discouraged.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:20, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I made some corrections and linked the English page to the one in Spanish. Best! --Correogsk or Gustavo (Editrocito or Heme aquí) 00:11, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I will, ok. --Correogsk or Gustavo (Editrocito or Heme aquí) 00:34, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Beverly Hills Courier is very localized coverage, which has less weight as a reliable source as compared with regional coverage such as Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, or national coverage such as The New York Times. Since all of the Courier references were mirrored by other sources, I felt it could be safely deleted. Yoninah (talk) 23:51, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your questions

Hi, thanks for your questions. Let's get some terms straight:

  • Original research means putting something in an article without a reference. Without a reference, it’s as if you made it up yourself, and it will probably be deleted.
  • Secondary sources refer to references that are independent of the topic you’re covering. In the case of the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden, the website is a primary source and should be cited as little as possible. The majority of information should come from independent media.
  • Close paraphrasing means copying a reference verbatim, either copying the words or copying the flow (e.g., changing the words but copying the line-by-line sentence structure). The easiest way to avoid close paraphrasing is simply to put the words in quotes. For example, when I was describing the unusual layout of a Jerusalem neighborhood, I couldn’t figure out how to rephrase a few words of the description, so I put them in quotes right in the middle of the sentence:

The buildings themselves were arranged in a "confusing zig-zag pattern" to slow down Arab armies that might charge the complex,<ref>

In general, the way I avoid close paraphrasing is by first copying down everything I want to include from the sources, and then "mixing it up" – telling it over in my own words. Everything is sourced, but it's not copied. With your background in academic work, it sounds like you, too, have the ability to be "creative" and avoid close paraphrasing by rewording the information you get from your sources.

As far as the list of donors in the 9/11 Memorial Garden article, you really do need secondary references to back them up. You might do Google searches on each name (e.g. Gilbert R. Chagoury Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden) and see what comes up. If you find cites for just a few, put them in a paragraph rather than a list:

The names of benefactors of the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden are engraved on black granite plaques in the garden. They include: Gilbert R. Chagoury,<ref> Lili Bosse,<ref> etc.

Does this help? Yoninah (talk) 22:01, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, I still don't understand why people want a secondary source for a description of names on a document. It's RIGHT THERE. This really makes no sense.Zigzig20s (talk) 22:16, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's the difference between a primary source (the monument) and a secondary source. Secondary sources are always preferred. Yoninah (talk) 22:17, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Also, there's the matter of what Wikipedia is all about. Just because something is TRUE doesn't make it VERIFIABLE. As a public encyclopedia that basically anyone can edit, one of Wikipedia's ground rules is that information must be verified by an independent source. Your monument just got caught in the middle :) Yoninah (talk) 22:21, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's verifiable on the pictures. Some of the names can be seen on a picture I uploaded (for example, Chagoury). I could try to take more pictures next time I am in town. But it is completely verifiable, as it is on the monument. It's not controversial for one split second.Zigzig20s (talk) 22:24, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would just go looking for sources that cite the names on the monument. And put the names in a paragraph, so it doesn't stick out as some long, unsourced list. Yoninah (talk) 22:30, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Here's why I think this requirement makes zero sense: this is a fairly new monument and there likely won't be sources describing the monument in detail, adding the names of donors inscribed upon the monument. It only takes looking at the monument though. It's not made up or controversial; the names on it are just a fact. Look at the picture!Zigzig20s (talk) 22:33, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just play by the rules. If you want to challenge the rules, maybe ask at the Help desk where to start. Best, Yoninah (talk) 22:58, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I probably should, although arguing is exhausting (and in submitting a few articles for DYK, I've encountered a few people on Wikipedia who seem to want to do nothing but argue; do these people really have no lives?). At least we disagree but you are cordial.Zigzig20s (talk) 23:23, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
