The World Socialist Web Site (WSWS) is an international socialist news site that is the online news and information center of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI). The site is closely associated with the Trotskyist Socialist Equality Party. The World Socialist Web Site publishes articles and analysis of news and events all around the world updated on a daily basis. The site also includes extensive coverage of the history of working class political and organized labor movements.

About

The World Socialist Web Site (WSWS) was established on February 14, 1998, as an online purveyor of socialist news and analysis.[3] The site was launched as a means of turning the official organ of the Workers League, the newspaper The Bulletin, into an online newspaper.[4] The site was redesigned on October 22, 2008.[5]

The WSWS supports and helps campaign for the Socialist Equality Parties in elections. The site has no corporate sponsorship and runs no advertisements except for material from Mehring Books, the ICFI's publishing arm. Instead, it sustains itself through the donations of readers and supporters. The content is published in 19 different languages, including English, Spanish[6], French[7], Turkish[8], German[9], Norwegian, Sinhalese[10], and Tamil[11]. David North serves as Chairman of the site's International Editorial Board.[12]

The World Socialist Web Site is regularly cited by journals, newspapers, and books for its coverage of social inequality and workers' rights[13][14][15], social struggles[16][17], international politics[18] and economics[19][20], and American wars[21][22] and war crimes[23][24][25]. WSWS articles are often collated by the Asian Tribune and AllAfrica.com regional news sites, and its articles are also regularly cited in newspapers in Africa[26][27][28], the Middle East[29] and in Asia[30][31].

Writers for the World Socialist Web Site deliver lectures around the world on a variety of topics, including Marxist theory[32][33], history[34], art[35], and war.[36]

Content

The World Socialist Web Site periodically undertakes focused political campaigns, during which numerous articles, videos, interviews, and perspectives are published on the topic. Campaigns undertaken by the WSWS include defense of democratic rights[37][38][39][40][41][42][43], intervention in the 2015 United Automobile Workers (UAW) concessions contract and other contract negotiations,[44][45][46][47] and the opposition to utility shutoffs and bankruptcy in Detroit[48][49][50][51]. The WSWS also is a partisan newspaper against imperialist war[52][53].

Opposition to Google Censorship

In July 2017, the World Socialist Website began a campaign to oppose new Google search algorithms that claimed to fight "fake news."[59][60][61][62] The WSWS presented evidence from SEMrush that showed that several socialist, anti-war, and progressive news sites had received reduced traffic from Google due to changes in its search algorithm; between late April 2017 and the beginning of August 2017, wsws.org Google search traffic fell by 67 percent.[63][64] In an interview responding to the data WSWS International Chairman David North stated, "The actions of Google constitute political censorship and are a blatant attack on free speech. At a time when public distrust of establishment media is widespread, this corporate giant is exploiting its monopolistic position to restrict public access to a broad spectrum of news and critical analysis.”[65]

On September 26 2017, the New York Times published an interview with David North concerning Google censorship of left-wing websites.[66]

Notable Interviews

The World Socialist Web Site publishes interviews with workers, students, academics, and artists.[67][68]

Centenary of the Russian Revolution

The World Socialist Web Site commemorated the Russian Revolution of 1917. The site published a weekly chronology entitled 'This Week in the Russian Revolution', which brought forward global events, Russian events, culture, and political questions each week throughout 1917. Writers of the World Socialist Web Site participated in a lecture series concerning questions surrounding the Russian Revolutions of February and October.

The WSWS also published new, original translations of documents published by Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky during 1917.[69]
