Tagging Error

I was trying to add some much needed maintence tags to The Puck Podcast, but when I submit the query I get "Tagging article: error "Service Unavailable" occurred while contacting the API. (null)". I think the tagging tool uses twinkle. I was wondering whether the issue was the article I was tagging or if it's something else. I'll give it another try tomorrow. Reassess Haukilahti

How to display current time?

Hello, Prasadkuchimanchi. To add to what Ram Dhaneesh said: for Wikipedia to have an encyclopaedia article about your brand (not a "page for" it), there needs to be sufficient independent material published about your brand to meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability: if such sources do not exist, then no article is possible.

If the sources do exist, then an article is possible. Such an article will not belong to you, will not be controlled by you, will not be for your benefit, and may end up containing material that you do not want it to say. Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.

If, given these warnings, you wish to go ahead with the extremely difficult task of writing a new article, made harder when you have a conflict of interest, you need to start by declaring your status as a paid editor - this is mandatory. Then read your first article carefully to find out how to create a draft for review. I only asked where on Wikipedia this alleged infringement had taken place; and asked what permissions were thought to be needed. The OP, like everyone else, is at liberty to ignore my question. I am aware of differing requirements in various jurisdictions around the world: in the UK, the concept of residential details (such as an image, or address) which are publicly available (such as from the street) being "private" does not exist. The post was about Wikipedia. We often remove private information we aren't required to remove by law, and we should almost never publish a residential street address in any context if that's what the post is about. You don't have to refer to laws and permissions to get it removed. Just mail info-en-q@wikimedia.org if you don't want to discuss the details on this very public page. @The Supermind: Knight Templar redirects to Knights Templar. Don't use the redirect in interlanguage links. There should be no complications with the listed articles. If you start in English then go to Knights Templar and click "Edit links" under "Languages" in the left pane (assuming your account has default language settings). Then you can add the Amharic page at Wikidata. You can also start in Amharic. The Amharic articles aren't currently connected to Wikidata so it works a little differently but should still be easy when you know the name of the English articles (remember to avoid the redirect). The connection between the pages is stored at Wikidata and only has to be made once. The link to start can both say "Edit links" and "Add links". PrimeHunter (talk) 20:39, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

@The Supermind: If you have a "More" menu with a "Wikidata item" option then I guess you enabled Advanced mode in Settings. That works when the article already has a Wikidata item. That means you have to start in English in your examples. Many help pages and helpers assume you use the desktop version of the site. You can switch to that on "Desktop" at the bottom of pages. Switch back on "Mobile view". The mobile version is mainly designed with readers in mind. Many editors prefer the desktop version even on a smartphone screen but you may have to do some zooming in and out. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:56, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

MarieYolette You will need to contact Google for information on Google search results and knowledge graphs; Wikipedia is not involved with that directly, and has no interest in enhancing search results. I assume you are asking because you want to write about yourself or someone you know. A person merits a Wikipedia article if they receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources that have chosen on their own to write about them, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person. @MarieYolette: Wikipedia (and most sites running mediawiki) have a fairly comprehensive API which allows you to access information from pages and perform various actions, see mw:API for the documentation. Google uses the API to collect information from various wikipedia articles, then presents that to users doing a search. The exact details of how google chooses what to present to searchers is known only to google, but that's the general idea. 192.76.8.74 (talk) 18:09, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

@MarieYolette: Only a text paragraph ending with a Wikipedia link can be assumed to be taken from Wikipedia. Google may have gathered other content like images and data fields from unspecified sources. We get many complaints about wrong images and data when Google didn't actually get it from Wikipedia. You have included an image of one of the artist's works, claiming it as your "Own work" and that it was gifted to you. @Lightbluerain: the {{subst:submit}} syntax causes the template code to substitute the username of the submitter to be added to the submission. This fooled me when I tried to help another user. I thought it would add a submission box that would invite that user to submit the draft, but instead it submitted the draft in my name. A Copy Edit template message has been added to the Maya cave sites page. The issues regarding coherence, citations, and grammar are extensive enough that they would require a complete overhaul of the page. Any suggestions as to procedures in a case like this would be appreciated.

Shenrichs, what are you hoping to achieve here? You could try to fix some of the problems yourself. You could also add a more detailed explanation of the problems with the article to the talk page. The article was tagged with Template:Copy edit in August and some copyediting has been done since then. You could also investigate projects like Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors which have different criteria for what kinds of articles they work on. Sorting table duplicates & splits cells

Hello fellow editors

When you sort this table: Wind_power_in_South_Australia#Wind_farm_overview, and sort on the "Wind Farm" column, the cells that were joined come apart and their names get duplicated. Is there a way to keep the Wind Farm stuck together and sort the other parts, such as the installed capacity? DiamondIIIXX (talk) 23:25, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

@DiamondIIIXX: The only way is if it's a single row where the last columns have multiple lines in the same cell. Those columns would sort by the first line in the cell (or by a sortkey if one is added). PrimeHunter (talk) 01:17, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

There is no User:bluesprof. See Special:ListUsers/Bluespro for similar names, but finding the username isn't enough. You need either username and password, or a stored email address which works. It's optional to give an email address. Maybe you didn't, or it's an old address. You can create a new account. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:43, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Surname vs Disambiguation pages

I've asked this question before and apologize for trying again: I've just reverted a lot of work someone put into "cleaning up" Wilson (name) by removing names that would be covered by a dab page. I use Surname pages a lot. and to me it doesn't matter how long the page is, I can usually find what I want using Ctrl+F, but with just a list of dab pages how do I find a D. Wilson who's an Australian actor? or worse still Judge Wilson? Is there an essay or directive I can point to next time someone "tidies up", or am I in the wrong? Doug butler. I'm with Debartolo2917 on this one. For example, why link to Adrian Wilson (disambiguation) and its subsidiary entries too? It's redundant. (Worse, only three of the four entries are included.) The main list page is already very long; why make it longer? My personal rule of thumb is, if a secondary dab page contains more than three entries, just link to it rather than list its entries. I never, ever do both. Of course things get left out. We're not perfect. But our goal should be to make it as easy as possible for users (including editors) to find what they're looking for. @Cluuz: Yes, there is plenty wrong with it. We don't cite IMDB for one thing. Your draft doesn't include evidence of significant coverage by reliable sources that are independent of the topic. We need multiple such sources, not one short review from an obscure source.

See WP:MUSICBIO for the inclusion criteria. Exactly what critiera does Dasith Nipuna Gamage meet? Your article should demonstrate that at least one of those criteria are satisfied. ~Anachronist (talk) 14:34, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Wrong photo in an article about guitarist Magnus Andersson

There is a photo of me, Magnus Andersson, guitarist, that is not the right person, but Magnus Andersson, handboll player. There are are several photos of the guitarist, Magnus Andersson to be found and photos that shows me with a classical guitar too. I am not sure how to change to the right one. But, as the information given in the Wikipedia article does not come from myself, it would be good if the picture could be changed to the correct person. I do not know how to do it myself nor am I sure i I can do it myself.

Hello! WP is very strict about copyright, and the default assumption is that any picture of you currently online can't be used because of that. The simplest solution is either:

Take a new, previously unpublished selfie and upload it with the process that starts here. That is a link to Commons, a sister-site of WP where "free" pictures are kept.

Or have a friend take a new, previously unpublished picture, and have them upload it at the same link. Then it can be used on WP, unless editors think it looks bloody awful. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:25, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi RW Dutton. I'm glad to see you are trying to keep articles from the project free from vandalism and disruptive edits. In this specific case, there is nothing to be alarmed, as your revertion already fixed everything. If the user keep disrupting the article, all you need do is warn them and hopefully they will stop. The Watchlist stylesheet just changed (eww!)

@Yappy2bhere: Hi. I suspect you may be able to opt out under beta features or gadgets in your preferences, as I don't see anything different yet. 1. No beta features enabled, only default gadgets enabled, Monobook skin. All settings are 2009 stock, never changed.
2. What's changed: (1) Revision time is monospaced and/or a different font. (2) The "mb" column seems unusually wide, as does the "viewed/not" bullet--they used to tuck in tight with the edit summary, now they seem ashamed to be associated with it. (3) The "mb" text is now bold with a dotted underline--either it wasn't bold before this, or the font changed, idk. (4) Finally, no whitespace to the right of the edit summaries--wasn't there whitespace below the "List of abbreviations"? (Not so sure about that last--it just "looks wrong" somehow, and harder to read.)
3. Using only default watchlist gadgets: (1) Geonotice, (2) Display watchlist notices, (3) base style, (4) green collapsible arrows and bullets for changed pages, (5) Subtle update marker.

Puppets

I know that generally you're supposed to WP:AGF, but I opened an AFD a while ago (here) and a random IP address showed up to make a keep argument that is pretty much just an WP:ATA. I have no problem with keeping the article if that becomes the consensus, but I don't often see IP addresses show up in AFD discussions and when I do someone normally gets flagged for puppetry. What would be the procedures neccessary to check if the IP address was a puppet and would it even be worth the time and effort in this context? TipsyElephant (talk) 12:27, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

To report sockpuppetry you need to go to WP:Sockpuppet investigations and file a report as instructed. Checkusers will not connect IP addresses to accounts, so any blocks would have to be handed out purley on the basis of behavioural evidence. In this case since the edits seem to be purely disruptive and the IP's look to be over far too broad a range for blocks to be effective It'd probably be better to ask for the discussion page to be semi-protected (I've put in a request). 192.76.8.74 (talk) 14:02, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Editting an Archived AfD

I was part of an AfD discussion where I voted rename or move and the consensus was to keep and then rename. When I check my WP:AfD stats it doesn't show up because rename and move are not accounted for. I was wondering whether I could edit the archived discussion to change the wording of my vote to Keep and rename because that's what I meant and then it would show up in my stats correctly. However, the archived discussion explicitly says at the top that no one should edit the page now that the discussion is over. Here's the page: WP:Articles for deletion/Unionized cooperative. @TipsyElephant: No, you must not change an articles for deletion discussion after it's been closed, your thoughts as they are written is what the closer used to determine consensus. AFD stats really aren't that important, even if your running for adminship the quality of your votes and level of understanding of policy are more important than numerical values. Even if the discussion was still open you shouldn't change your vote after other people have replied to it, instead you should strike through it and give an updated vote below. 192.76.8.74 (talk) 13:50, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

I think you'll find that many essays are added to other pages by their authors, so I wouldn't worry about that. I'd recommend finding about 3 of the most relevant. There may also be a template somewhere. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 19:57, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Note list

Hello, I'm trying to add an explanatory footnote to an article about olympic sailing, but I can't figure out how to get the note "list" to show up in the "Notes" section. Instead the note shows up a little bit earlier in the article, despite that I've put {{notes}} in the "Notes" section. You can see what happens in my sandbox User:Marima/sandbox. Why is this? @Marima: it appears that {{sailing result legend}} must be adding an undocumented {{notes}} of its own. Fix this by using you own separate group. Add |group=mine to your {{efn}} and to your {{notes}}. -Arch dude (talk) 21:37, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Trying to update my own information

Good morning,

I am trying to update the information which someone has placed on Wikipedia about me, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lidia_Morawska, but every time I try to submit it, you don't seem to approve of it. The information here is out of date and and I'm trying to update the information which is also not necessarily correct about me. It seems strange to me that people who don't know me can write this about me and you publish it, but you won't let me correct my own information?

How can we resolve this?
