Syntax correction request

Hello Materialscientist, I'm correcting a tracked syntax error on Wikipedia called the Tidy Font bug*, and one of your protected pages has 7 of these errors, and some other WP:Lint issues. Would you be willing to make the following changes to User:Materialscientist/Awards?

Since there are multiple minor changes, I've done them in my sandbox here. Your current page copied in full on left, proposed changes on right.

These changes correct the tidy font bugs, obsolete tags, a few missing end tags within signatures, and some bogus/contradictory image options.

If these changes meet your approval, just edit the newer version, copy the full page and replace all on User:Materialscientist/Awards.

If you have any issues with the proposed change, we can talk.

(*Tidy font bug is when links are written in the <font>[[link]]</font> format with the color specified outside of the link. Browsers don't agree on how to display the colors for this with some browsers displaying with the specified colors, and others defaulting back to the standard link blue.)

Thank you, Zinnober9 (talk) 16:42, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IP hostility

Hi. I see you've reverted the hostile talk page edits of 72.234.109.219, which has been a vandalism-only account. The user has also just recently edited my talk page with hostility. I was going to report it for vandalism, but given the nature of the account and their harassment, please consider a block, which they themselves asked for. Lapadite (talk) 16:05, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Bamberger image has broken sizing. Is your revert responsible

When I looked at the page, the image was clearly way too large and broke past the normal bounds (even into the outline on the left-hand side), with the only part of the giant image even visible being to the right of his face (and thus mostly consisting of the background). I was surprised nobody had fixed it. I looked at the history to see what edit might have mistakenly caused this and saw that someone had converted it to a thumb, but you reverted it. Is it possible it displays differently in your browser than others? The current state is clearly unsatisfactory. 208.59.185.238 (talk) 17:47, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to unprotect any article

I'm new comer i read lot's of articles to create articles and etc by love to start with problem solving so please suggest how to unprotect any article which is protected by editors. G20norms (talk) 19:45, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker), the easiest way is to request at Request for Page Protection and click Request Unprotection. From your Teahouse posts, I suspect you're talking about Ankit Kumar Pandey which was protected after being recreated over and over. There's a draft article, so unprotection of the main article is unlikely. Instead, you should work on improving the draft which is here- Draft:Ankit Kumar Pandey. Once it's been improved, it can be submitted for review. If it's accepted, they will work with an admin to get the protection removed so the draft can be moved over. The article right now has tone that's very much promotional that needs to go, plus sourcing issues. The image is a copyright violation. There's quite a bit of work needed. FYI, (70.95.77.186)

Thanks for that block. It seems like mass attacks with open proxy usage has been on the rise lately. There have been some prolific vandals that have resorted to utilizing proxies to mass attack articles all at once, so I've been checking the connections of some of them against VPNGate/SoftEther and ipqualityscore (although 70.95.77.186 was just a run-of the mill vandal that I just so happened to randomly check). Unfortunately, the server certificate expiration date isn't public information (you have to connect to the VPN yourself and then open the connection settings in order to see that information), so you'll just have to take my word for when it expires :-). Anyhow, just FYI... 73.67.145.30 (talk) 05:28, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Materialscientist,

Why do you delete articles like this as CSD G5, that have been around for years and had so many other contributors besides the page creator sockpuppet? It seems to go against our policy. We don't delete articles that have substantial contributions from editors other than the sockpuppet. There were a number of articles like this tonight. Liz Read! Talk! 06:48, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Like Patrika TV. This had one edit by a sockpuppet and many, many other edits by regular contributors. There was no reason to delete this article along with all of its redirects. Liz Read! Talk! 06:55, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for comments. Virtually all additions to First India News Rajasthan are from three sockpuppet accounts. Patrika TV was earlier deleted in AFD - it was turned into a redirect, which I have restored. Materialscientist (talk) 07:14, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

REMOVING CONTENTS

@Materialscientist Hi, user @Brlob (Central Auth) is heavily removing contents in pages about countries in the name of reference. Advised them to use maintainance templates such as "citation needed", etc but they won't listen and keeps on doing the same thing. Before I discovered, another user already warned them but won't listen. Would be good if you find a better way to advise them so that they stop or they should find a better way such as leaving templates behind. See their contributions here. Thanks. ReferenceExpander

Just a friendly heads-up in case you weren't already aware, since it's installed on your common.js: Careless use of ReferenceExpander has caused serious problems. It's currently at MFD, and a large cleanup project is underway to repair the citations damaged by the script. I and several other users have !voted that the script be deleted or disabled, and I wouldn't recommend using it at all unless you thoroughly check every reference it modifies against the previous revision. If you're interested in a more detailed explanation of the script's issues, Folly Mox has provided an excellent summary at the MFD. — SamX [talk · contribs] 05:06, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary IP unban request for Edit-a-Thon

Hello,

I'm a librarian at the San Diego Public Library and we're doing an Edit-a-thon on [https://sandiego.librarymarket.com/event/wikipedia-edit-thon-summer-sessions-1 June 26th] and [https://sandiego.librarymarket.com/event/wikipedia-edit-thon-summer-sessions-0 July 31st] (links to web calendar page). We share our IPs with a university, high school, and have public access computers, so it's perfectly reasonable to have us blocked regularly. Because of that, I'm asking for a temporary lift of the IP [137.164.0.0/16]. (That's what comes up when I try and use the public computers here to create a new account.).

While I ask for our patrons to make new accounts before attending, some of our patrons lack computer access at home or drop in on the day of.

Hopefully this isn't too much of an inconvenience for you. I 100% understand why our IP is banned and why these requests are necessary.

Thank you for your time, --SDPLPauline (talk) 19:42, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request for intervention at Havyaka Brahmins

As I wrote on User:Rodw's talk page, the above article was in a mess and I cleaned it up and Wikified it but as I stepped away, the user who was responsible for the article being in a bad shape in the first place (User:Bhavana 777) came back to undo my edits. I have undone that user's edits for now but unlike at Wiktionary, I don't have admin privileges here so I have no way to ensure that user won't come back for an edit war.

A closer look at the person's talk page shows that the user was warned and blocked by you in the past for bad edits to the very same article in question. I think further action is warranted. -- Pulimaiyi (talk) 11:10, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thank you for blocking this vandal. Since the contents of his edits include blatant antisemitic incitements, I believe that hiding/deleting these revisions should be considered too. Regards, Guycn2 (talk) 01:42, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why

Why are your blocks so long your not supposed to do that make them like a week please WONKAKlD (talk) 11:02, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(Peeking over the fence) WONKAKlD - At Teahouse you accused Materialscientist of long blocks on a person you know who does not have an account, and you did not provide an IP address. You should be aware that an appropriate administrative response is often an indefinite block, meaning that the only recourse for the blocked person is to appeal the block with specifics on how their behaviour will be different going forward. It all depends on how grevious the offence was. M's blocks range from 31 hours to indefinite. David notMD (talk) 11:28, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok sorry but why block people for months I mean if it’s horrible I understand WONKAKlD (talk) 16:58, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(by talk reader) You have no right to edit here. Why should we, the established community, put up with vandals? Chris Troutman (talk) 17:08, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

what are you doing there? you want me to request your de-adminship?

why did you undo ALL of my edits? 2.86.206.211 (talk) 09:28, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.

Last month you checkuser-blocked this account. Was this a sock of English Patriot Man?

It is an LTA, but I don't know the master. They were editing from an open proxy. Materialscientist (talk) 21:36, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Long term BLP vandal (2601:40B:0:B470::/64) #2

Hello.
I had previously reported this long term vandal to you(<permalink>) and you blocked them for 1 month:

Turns out, that wasn't enough to convince them to stop, as they have once again done the same "this person was in a relationship with <recurring name>" vandalism on the 17th (<diff>). I have unfortunately only noticed the edit today.

The IP range in question has only had that one edit since their block ran out on (presumably on the 1st of this month). Would this be sufficient to block them again?

Fuel cell

An IP recently made this change. I don't know enough to be sure, but I am guessing that the text was previously implying that, although Bacon invented the hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell in 1952, the first commercial use was actually the alkaline fuel cell, first used by NASA in the 1960s (more than a century after Grove's invention). Can you please take a look? -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:43, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you block me from editing?

Hello, Materialscientist.

I would like to know why you blocked me from editing. I did nothing but you STILL BLOCKED ME! I WANT TO KNOW WHY YOU DID THAT. XPLAYZGDFBG (talk) 15:14, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find that you were blocked from editing because your block log doesn't say that you were blocked from editing. 2A02:2378:104D:6E72:0:0:0:1 (talk) 17:46, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sock of Jad Krimeed, could have sworn got a 31 hour block or somesuch but I can't find it for some reason. In any case, up to the same old geography stuff, creating redlinks all over the place, wholly unhelpful edits. Sorry to bother you with it... Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 08:48, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Do you not think it would be common courtesy to at least tell people why you have blocked them.

When you are blocking new users, which I’m sure you spend a lot of your time doing, do you not think it would at least be common courtesy to say why you have blocked them? I understand that this may take a few seconds of your time, but it would be extremely helpful and kind. When I was blocked, I felt ignored and looked down upon, and it took me many days of navigating the lengthy pages of Wikipedia policy to find out the actual reason that I had been blocked. It also comes off as extremely blunt and oppressive when you block somebody with absolutely no explanation. I believe this sort of behaviour from moderators is responsible for the decline- or stagnation- in the number of Wikipedia editors. In fact, since my blocking I have barely edited Wikipedia at all.

After all, the police must tell you why you are being arrested, when they arrest you, so why should you not have to explain your decision to permanently end the editing career of a potentially helpful future Wikipedian. 222Boarbit78 (talk) 22:35, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @222Boarbit78: What do you call this ? Placed there almost 3 months ago. - FlightTime (open channel) 22:42, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Yet another case of banner blindness. It seems kids these days don't read. There's also the arrogant attitude coming from an unaccomplished n00b, pretending to be a "potentially helpful future Wikipedian". Wikipedia is a website having been run by volunteers for twenty years but you wouldn't know it from the internet denizens washing up upon our shores. Chris Troutman (talk) 22:45, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Chris, I am completely aware that the reason for my block was hidden within the banner, which I absolutely did read. However, it was not clearly stated and it was clearly copy and pasted, which is undeniably blunt and impersonal.
as someone who was devoted their life to Wikipedia, I am sure that you feel that you and the “established community” could run the entire site perfectly well by yourselves, and although you may not be completely wrong it is undeniable that the large number of less devoted users on the site contribute hugely to accuracy and information on Wikipedia.
Also, I fail to see how it is arrogant to suggest that I could potentially become a helpful future Wikipedian. In fact, I believe that it came off as pretty humble, and I also think that it’s time that you realised that any useful edit to Wikipedia, no matter how small, is undeniably helpful. So therefore I have already been helpful (even if I lack the devotion to spend thousands of hours of my life on this site).
All I was asking for is that established editors like yourself and material scientist could potentially be slightly kinder and more helpful in the future, rather than being blunt, rude dismissive and off-putting. 222Boarbit78 (talk) 23:03, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@222Boarbit78, I'm sorry you found it blunt, rude, dismissive, and off-putting. It was created from a template, Template:Uw-ublock, which we use because it makes giving such notifications easier (as many such notifications are needed daily), but it can indeed feel a little impersonal. We do what we can to make them feel less so. You might want to go to Wikipedia talk:Template index/User talk namespace and discuss how to communicate it more kindly. Valereee (talk) 23:48, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) You were provided with a very detailed reason for the soft username block, which included why you couldn't have "bot" in your username. All you had to do was to change the name, which you apparently did (unless Cabayi just changed the "o" to "i" - did you notice that?). What is the problem? If you're so interested in being a productive contributor, it's time to move on. Acroterion (talk) 22:49, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I changed my own username. 222Boarbit78 (talk) 23:04, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A block does not "permanently end the editing career" of anyone, otherwise you would not be posting now. 331dot (talk) 22:50, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I know you are very diligent with these types of blocks, in the past few days this IP has vandalised 4-5 pages, and it's quite clear that they aren't here to build a Wikipedia. They are on their 4th and last warning, I think they may vandalise again, soon, so I just wanted to make you aware for a future block. 多多123 09:33, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Series of good-faith reverts in the field of systems science

Hi Materialscientist, this morning in good faith I made a series of reverts (see here) in line with two mayor earlier reverts (not by me), see here and here, where the removals of User:Carchasm where described as "Vandalism."

In the week before User:Carchasm made over 100 similar edits in the field of systems (see here (search the for term "system" gives 127 hits in 100+ edits), starting with his assumption/framing on 16 June 2023 see here, that the Systems theory article is a HOAX. In the mean time he prod-ed a series of articles and wanted the Wikiproject Systems to be deleted.

Most of those 100+ contributions have been reverted on dozens of places after several discussions, partly by himself. But a series of his earliest questionable edits remained. Now @Kvng: more or less asked for a listing, see here, and earlier offered to review them. With this series of revertes more or less such a list is created.

Now I am sorry for these indirect anom edits, of which I was aware that a Geolocate trace could have pointed into my direction anyway. These where made in this way due to a hard-needed Wikibreak, which I need to continue. In my opinion none of these reverted edits should have been made in the first place, without any consent.

Now I also struggled with the edit summary, because I wouldn't call those edits vandalism, but there seem to be a form of fundemental misunderstanding and serious misjudgement, see for example also here and here. Now my question here is if you could reconsider your assessment of this series of reverts as disruptive editing. Thanks, and again sorry for the inconvenience. -- Mdd (talk) 11:42, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also willing to vouch that these IP reverts weren't disruptive editing. @Mdd: if you want to re-make them to re-establish the status quo, I don't have any objections at this time. - car chasm (talk) 17:10, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Could you block these open proxies. All of their edits will need to be reverted en mass as well. Thanks. 2601:1C0:4401:F60:6827:5D38:B000:A130 (talk) 03:16, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Kindly check out what's happening on the Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah history page:

The history page[5] got systematically spammed by an account with endless unimportant 'tiny edits' making it difficult for other users to follow that section with such unnecessary spamming that could have been done in a far lesser steps, so what's the point of such spam other than corrupting the article's revision history section.

In the course of their mass-spamming, another user noticed their disruptive editing more than once and alerted them to their manipulation and misuse of "sources". [6] [7]

Yet they once again removed a far more reliable source that addressed the exact subject of the article [Islamic Politics, Rulers] and replaced it with a general unrelated source on Arts and Architecture.[8]

Distinguish tag

Is this a correct use of the Distinguish tag? I don't see how the book can be confused with the broader concept? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Selp-Helf&diff=1163289081&oldid=1106349133 -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:48, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you were the last person to edit the WikiProject page. Do you have any plans to reboot the project? voorts (talk/contributions) 18:37, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No. My edit was a revert rather than a message to someone. Materialscientist (talk) 21:22, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's my bad for not looking at the edit history more closely. I guess this WikiProject should probably be marked inactive then since the main page hasn't had any substantive edits in the last 6 months. voorts (talk/contributions) 21:48, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thank you for addressing the latest socks of Jinnifer on the horror film article. Just a heads up that they attempted to canvass me on my talk page as well after I reverted their two edits. The IP they used there is 50.93.179.174. Thanks! NJZombie (talk) 00:56, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Finally realized who that is

Just realized that 2607:FEA8:2900:E2E0::/64 == 2607:FEA8:2B20:C7A0::/64, aka CanadianHistorian(MMA & History)SPI, who added the BLPvio to Soa Palelei in the first place last year and restored it on the latter /64 last month. Sleepy, so haven't checked for rangeblock viability, but thought I'd mention. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 10:35, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
