GA of Yahoo Data Breaches
Hey, thanks for all the work you put into reviewing Yahoo!_data_breaches. Totally agree with all your points (some are my carelessness and some are my timidness) I'll rewrite and try again in a little while: I certainly think I couldn't have moved much further forward without another editor encouraging an even deeper revision than I've already done. Much appreciated. Joe (talk) 18:29, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- I look forward to seeing the article back at GA at some point :) Sohom (talk) 20:11, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
DYK for Cookie stuffing
On 1 April 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cookie stuffing, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that you could be sentenced to serve time in prison for stuffing cookies? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cookie stuffing. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Cookie stuffing), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
Hello Sohom Datta,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Tech News: 2024-15
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
- A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
- Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [4][5]
- Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [6]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar). [7][8]
- New accounts and logged-out users will get the visual editor as their default editor on mobile. This deployment is made at all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. [9]

WikiCup 2024 April newsletter
We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.
Our current top scorers are as follows:
- Sammi Brie (submissions) with 642 points, mostly from 11 GAs about radio and television;
- voorts (submissions) with 530 points, mostly from two FAs (Well he would, wouldn't he? and Cora Agnes Benneson) and three GAs;
- Generalissima (submissions) with 523 points, mostly from 11 GAs about coinage and history;
- SounderBruce (submissions) with 497 points, mostly from a FA about the 2020 season of the soccer club Seattle Sounders FC and two GAs;
- Tamzin (submissions) with 410 points, mostly from a FA about the drink Capri-Sun and three GAs;
- Kusma (submissions) with 330 points, mostly from a FA about the English botanist Anna Blackburne and a GA.
Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.
If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please read Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Problems
- Between 2 April and 8 April, on wikis using Flagged Revisions, the "Reverted" tag was not applied to undone edits. In addition, page moves, protections and imports were not autoreviewed. This problem is now fixed. [10][11]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (calendar). [12][13]
- Default category sort keys will now affect categories added by templates placed in footnotes. Previously footnotes used the page title as the default sort key even if a different default sort key was specified (category-specific sort keys already worked). [14]
- A new variable
page_last_edit_age
will be added to abuse filters. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made. [15]
Future changes
- Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Learn more.
- Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including Quarry). This affects only the
abuse_filter
andabuse_filter_history
tables. Some queries might need to be updated. [16]

Recent changes
- Starting this week, newcomers editing Wikipedia will be encouraged to try structured tasks. Structured tasks have been shown to improve newcomer activation and retention. [17]
- You can nominate your favorite tools for the fifth edition of the Coolest Tool Award. Nominations will be open until May 10.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 April. It will be on all wikis from 25 April (calendar). [18][19]
Future changes
- This is the last warning that by the end of May 2024 the Vector 2022 skin will no longer share site and user scripts/styles with old Vector. For user-scripts that you want to keep using on Vector 2022, copy the contents of Special:MyPage/vector.js to Special:MyPage/vector-2022.js. There are more technical details available. Interface administrators who foresee this leading to lots of technical support questions may wish to send a mass message to your community, as was done on French Wikipedia. [20]

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter
The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.
The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:
- Sammi Brie (submissions) with 707 points, mostly from 45 good article nomination reviews and 12 good articless about radio and television;
- Generalissima (submissions) with 600 points, mostly from 12 good articles and 12 did you know nominations about coinage and history;
- SounderBruce (submissions) with 552 points, mostly from a featured article about the 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season, three featured lists, and two good articles;
- BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 548 points, mostly from a featured article about the snooker player John Pulman, two featured lists, and one good article;
- voorts (submissions) with 530 points, mostly from two featured articles (Well he would, wouldn't he? and Cora Agnes Benneson) and three good articles.
The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for the following wikis: Azerbaijani Wikipedia, Bengali Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, Persian Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Dutch Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia, Thai Wikipedia, Turkish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Vietnamese Wikipedia. These wikis participated to a test, where 50% of users got the new design, for one year. As this test gave positive results, the new design is deployed on these wikis as the default design. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at all wikis in the coming weeks. [21]
- Seven new wikis have been created:
- You can now watch message groups/projects on Translatewiki.net. Initially, this feature will notify you of added or deleted messages in these groups. [29]
- Dark mode is now available on all wikis, on mobile web for logged-in users who opt into the advanced mode. This is the early release of the feature. Technical editors are invited to check for accessibility issues on wikis. See more detailed guidelines.
Problems
- Kartographer maps can use an alternative visual style without labels, by using
mapstyle="osm"
. This wasn't working in previews, creating the wrong impression that it wasn't supported. This has now been fixed. [30]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 May. It will be on all wikis from 2 May (calendar). [31][32]

- Proposal 3b (in trial): Make the first two days discussion-only
- Proposal 13 (in trial): Admin elections
- Proposal 14 (implemented): Suffrage requirements
- Proposals 16 and 16c (phase II discussion): Allow the community to initiate recall RfAs and Community recall process based on dewiki
- Proposal 17 (phase II discussion): Have named Admins/crats to monitor infractions
- Proposal 24 (phase II discussion): Provide better mentoring for becoming an admin and the RfA process
- Proposal 25 (implemented): Require nominees to be extended confirmed
See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:09, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Go programming
Can you help me better understand how the modules work with Go and Github? I constantly get an error like this. Reading that thread doesn't really help me understand what causes the problem or how to fix it--I tried everything they suggested. The main problem for me is that I don't really understand how Go identifies which modules to download to a local directory, how it knows it has the "right" copy, etc. The documentation I looked at for Go modules is either too detailed or too general. For example, it put this in the go.mod file:
- github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools/v2 v2.0.0-20240505063049-1508c8717f87
The "v2.0.0-20240505063049-1508c8717f87" seems to be some version number of the code on Github or a hash # of some sort. How exactly did it come up with that number? If I could better understand the key steps Go uses when it runs a command like "go mod init" or "go mod tidy" when working with code stored on github, that might help. I need to understand the relationship between the original on github and the copy it downloaded, which will help me understand why the local copy is missing something it needs (or some path is incorrect).
I'm more used to "# include" statements of C, where the path is explicit. These implied paths are confusing. --David Tornheim (talk) 20:24, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @David Tornheim To my understanding Golang pins specific versions of dependencies using Github commit hashes (to prevent Supply chain attacks). The string
github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools/v2 v2.0.0-20240505063049-1508c8717f87
has multiple parts,github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools
denotes the repository,/v2
denotes to Golang that the v2 version of the module was specifically required. The rest of the string is a pseudo version number generated by Golang that denotes the specific commit/state of the module when the module was required. It's of the formv<base_version_prefix>-<timestamp>-<git_commit_id>
. The base version prefix is the last version published in the repository (in this case 2.0.0), the timestamp corresponds to the timestamp of the last commit to the repository (i.e. 5 May 2024 etc) and the commit hash is 1508c8717f87. Google has published a pretty well specified doc about this at https://go.dev/doc/modules/version-numbers and https://go.dev/doc/modules/gomod-ref which are also pretty good resources on the topic :) - Wrt to your specific case, I think Golang objecting to/complaining about the fact that
github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools
does not actually have a published v2 version as specified by the string. Sohom (talk) 20:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)- Thank you. That's helpful. I'll probably have a couple of more questions. Hopefully, I'll make some progress with the information you provided.--David Tornheim (talk) 22:35, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta: Unfortunately, I'm still having trouble. When I type:

- go.mod:13:2: usage: require module/path v1.2.3
- I believe it is parsing: https://github.com/DavidTornheim/yapperbot-frs/blob/master/go.mod
- But that file does not ask for v1.2.3 of anything (and not at line 12 or 13). I can't find anything in my code (or the original) that asks for v1.2.3. Is it trying to parse an older version of go.mod? If so, is there a reason it is not getting the newest version? Is there a way to look at v0.0.0-20240505230953-00203c1cab87?
- --David Tornheim (talk) 00:35, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- @David Tornheim I don't think it's looking for v1.2.3, I think it cannot parse line 12 and 13 and is telling you to correct the lines 12 and 13 to be in the format
require module/path v<any_version_number>
. Based on looking at https://github.com/DavidTornheim/yapperbot-frs/blob/master/go.mod line 12 doesn't have any version number, and line 13 is getting tripped up because#
is not considered a valid character (A comment string in go.mod would need to start with//
) Sohom (talk) 00:53, 6 May 2024 (UTC)- @Sohom Datta: I changed the # to //, but the error is exactly the same. --David Tornheim (talk) 01:02, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- @David Tornheim Line 14 still doesn't conform to the
require module/path v<any_version_number>
format. Maybe you can switch that line forgithub.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools v0.0.0-20240505230558-e0c68ccf8803
(which is what Golang generates when I try to add ybtools to the fresh project). Sohom (talk) 01:06, 6 May 2024 (UTC)- That fixed it! Thanks so much for your help. If Go's error messages were a little more clear and specific--like your explanations--I probably could have figured it out on my own! --David Tornheim (talk) 01:20, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Tech News: 2024-19
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for all wikis, except for Commons, Wikidata and most Wikipedias (a few have already received this design change). You can read the detail of the changes on Diff. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at remaining wikis in the coming weeks. [33][34]
- Interface admins now have greater control over the styling of article components on mobile with the introduction of the
SiteAdminHelper
. More information on how styles can be disabled can be found at the extension's page. [35] - Wikimedia Enterprise has added article body sections in JSON format and a curated short description field to the existing parsed Infobox. This expansion to the API is also available via Wikimedia Cloud Services. [36]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 May. It will be on all wikis from 9 May (calendar). [37][38]
- When you look at the Special:Log page, the first view is labelled "All public logs", but it only shows some logs. This label will now say "Main public logs". [39]
Future changes
- A new service will be built to replace Extension:Graph. Details can be found in the latest update regarding this extension.
- Starting May 21, English Wikipedia and German Wikipedia will get the possibility to activate "Add a link". This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to all Wikipedias. These communities can activate and configure the feature locally. [40]

Recent changes
- On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
__EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [41] - If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [42]
- Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to thealt=
attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [43] - The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [44]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [45][46]
- The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [47]
Future changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [48]
- Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (pl_namespace
andpl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the newlinktarget
table instead (lt_namespace
andlt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:- Replace

Question from Seelers (00:33, 15 May 2024)
Hello, I have today been amending false/unreliable information on a page and my edit was removed with the reason "take it to the talk page". Is this sufficient reason to remove an edit which had sources to back it up? --Seelers (talk) 00:33, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Seelers If prior discussion has occured around the subject, or if the subject is controversial, then I think that's a pretty acceptable response (see the policy page on edit-revert-discuss which is a core pillar of Wikipedia). Coming to the sources, sportskeeda, instagram and facebook are generally (read: always) avoided as sources because of their tendency to be outright wrong or unverifiable in most aspects. I think the editor is justified in reverting you and asking you to discuss the subject on a talk page where you might be able to show more reliable sources to support your edit. On CSD
In general "no longer needed" is not a WP:CSD except in your own userspace, and even then with some exceptions see WP:U1, so you should avoid using it. That does not preclude deletion by listing at XFD, it is merely a reflection of the fact that all CSD are specific and narrow, WP:!G6 is also good reading. In that one specific case WP:RDRAFT means it won't be deleted even at WP:RFD, however in general uselessness is one factor that can be considered when evaluating pages at RFD, WP:TFD, and WP:MFD, thank you. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:A165:7AFC:68F9:104D (talk) 18:22, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- Point taken, I'm fine with the page being around until it gets deleted. I'll just note that a similar page in my userspace would have been deleted under U1/G6. Sohom (talk) 18:30, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- Namespaces are central to how CSD is organized, hence only articles can be deleted under WP:ACSD and only files under WP:FCSD etc. In this specific case the community has decided to retain draft to main redirects as a result of an WP:RFC that resulted in WP:RDRAFT, but has not chosen to do so for user to main redirects. There are also some projecttalkspace to main redirects that are retained as a legacy from when that was an allowed staging area for drafts. All of which is to say deletion can be complicated which is why I decided to drop a friendly note here. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:A165:7AFC:68F9:104D (talk) 18:36, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- yeah looks like deleting draft redirects are more trouble than they are worth I guess :( Sohom (talk) 18:45, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, will now correctly delete pages which were moved to another title. [51]
- New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description. [52][53]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 May. It will be on all wikis from 23 May (calendar). [54][55]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It will change on 22 May in some skins (Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in all other skins. The developers are also considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.

Question from Snappyboi54 (23:25, 21 May 2024)
Cannot upload to non free uploads need the logo for CMF by Nothing uploaded properly. The one I have currently uploaded will get removed --Snappyboi54 (talk) 23:25, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Snappyboi54 Wikipedia has some pretty strict guidelines on how non-free images like logos can be uploaded. If you don't follow them while uploading, your upload can (and will get removed). Given that you are relatively new, I would just try to get the Draft:CMF by Nothing article right. You can upload the logo later. Sohom (talk) 03:01, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
link-dispenser (Heraclitus)
This tool appeared to be working, but then, before completion, it generated an error report with instructions to share the link[56] here. It's not necessary for my GA review, but I'm just following the instructions in case it's something that requires your attention.
Cheers, Patrick (talk) 19:19, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Patrick Welsh Yeah, I'm aware of the issue, there are some issues surrounding the technologies used by the tool (Redis). Generally, when those errors show up you should be able to reload and get the cached result. Sohom (talk) 22:37, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Question from Formatmatters (23:30, 25 May 2024)
Hi Sohom, I have some questions about formatting numbers. The manual of style seems adamant on using the dot as a decimal separator and comma for thousands, though the international standard says to use spaces for thousands and either of the two options for decimal separators. Is it unacceptable to write 12 345 instead of 12,345? The majority of the world uses the comma as a decimal separator and using it to separate thousands can cause confusion and tends to be less readable. And one other thing: I've seen articles using currency symbols placed before the numeric value. I am aware that this is quite common in the case of the US dollar and the sterling, as these are associated with countries that use this format. This, however, is not the case for the euro, which is always placed after the number (e.g. 2.35 €). The manual of style is fine with symbols being placed after the number in other foreign currencies, but treats the euro as in the case of dollars or pounds. Not to mention that it is simply more logical and readable for the symbol to follow after the amount. Why does Wikipedia have a problem with this or the use of space as a thousands separator? Shouldn't we adhere to international standards rather than country-specific formats, especially in the case of a de facto international language?
Thank you, regards. --Formatmatters (talk) 23:30, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Formatmatters Short answer, take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers. There are some pretty detailed guidelines surrounding how to format these numerical values that have been decided after being discussed for eons by multiple editors. I believe 12 345 is fine, I will ask you to find a citation for The majority of the world uses the comma as a decimal separator In my experience, the opposite is true (I recognize that if you've lived in european countries the format we use might seem confusing, but the rest of the world (the Americas, Asia and Oceania) uses the comma to separate digits.) The same goes for using the currency at the end of the numbers. While it might be more readable to you, having lived most of my life outside of european countries, I find the use of currency symbols at the end of numbers positively unsettling :) Sohom (talk) 03:14, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Several bugs related to the latest updates to the UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons have been fixed. For more information, see T365107 and T365119.
- In March 2024 a new addPortlet API was added to allow gadgets to create new portlets (menus) in the skin. In certain skins this can be used to create dropdowns. Gadget developers are invited to try it and give feedback.
- Some CSS in the Minerva skin has been removed to enable easier community configuration. Interface editors should check the rendering on mobile devices for aspects related to the classes:
.collapsible
,.multicol
,.reflist
,.coordinates
,.topicon
. Further details are available on replacement CSS if it is needed.

FAC
@Sohom Datta: I had listed Catherine, Princess of Wales at FAC last month. Hopefully you could leave a few comments at the FAC discussion page and hence extend your support for my nomination. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 03:31, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll take a look at it this week and try to leave some comments if I feel confident. Tho, tbh, British politics is very very far from my normal comfort zone of stuff that I edit. Sohom (talk) 03:36, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta It's more about a member of the British royal family and hence you will hardly find politics-related stuff within the article. Furthermore, it would be a good read and if possible, please do leave your comments before the end of this month. Looking forward to your response. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 04:12, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta Would you consider reviewing Catherine's FAC? If you're interested, I assure you it will be a good read, to say the least. I would greatly appreciate any comments that could help improve the article's quality. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 14:53, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

- @Sohom Datta Thank you for your comments at the FAC. Given that the article covers her public life as well as other significant aspects of her life to date, it is somewhat longer than most other articles. Nonetheless, I have recently removed information I found irrelevant and will continue to do so. I hope to address all your comments and improve the quality of the article. Thank you for your time once again. I look forward to further suggestions and await your response. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 03:40, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta Would you kindly consider leaving a closing note on Catherine's FAC if you have no additional suggestions for the article? We have endeavoured to address all your concerns regarding the article effectively, and we would appreciate any further input you may have. If not, I anticipate your final opinion. Template editor granted
Your account has been granted the "templateeditor" user permission, allowing you to edit templates and modules that have been protected with template protection. It also allows you to bypass the title blacklist, giving you the ability to create and edit editnotices. Before you use this user right, please read Wikipedia:Template editor and make sure you understand its contents. In particular, you should read the section on wise template editing and the criteria for revocation.
You can use this user right to perform maintenance, answer edit requests, and make any other simple and generally uncontroversial edits to templates, modules, and edinotices. You can also use it to enact more complex or controversial edits, after those edits are first made to a test sandbox, and their technical reliability as well as their consensus among other informed editors has been established. If you are willing to process edit requests on templates and modules, keep in mind that you are taking responsibility to ensure the edits have consensus and are technically sound.
This user right gives you access to some of Wikipedia's most important templates and modules; it is critical that you edit them wisely and that you only make edits that are backed up by consensus. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password.
If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.
If you were granted the permission on a temporary basis you will need to re-apply for the permission a few days before it expires including in your request a permalink to the discussion where it was granted and a {{ping}} for the administrator who granted the permission. You can find the permalink in your rights log.

Recent changes
- The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [65]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
- The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the
mw-reference-text
class, Parsoid now also adds thereference-text
class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [66]
Problems
- There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [67]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [68][69]
- The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a
<span class="mw-cite-backlink">
wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [70] - On multilingual wikis that use the
<translate>
system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [71]

Recent changes
- People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [72]
- The new Community Configuration extension is available on Test Wikipedia. This extension allows communities to customize specific features to meet their local needs. Currently only Growth features are configurable, but the extension will support other Community Configuration use cases in the future. [73][74]
- The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [75]
Problems
- Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [76]
- Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [77]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [78][79]
- Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [80]
- Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [81]

Module:RFX report
Hi @Sohom Datta R1F4T (talk) 16:15, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @R1F4T I've taken a few stabs at it, the major things remaining is to come up with a regex to parse the timestamp at bn:মডিউল:Rfx#L-214. Do you have a regex handly to swap it in ? Sohom (talk) 17:08, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- bn:User:Sohom Datta/sandbox is how it looks now. Sohom (talk) 17:09, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- What is a regex? R1F4T (talk) 03:29, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta if we convert the date in english I think we can use the default regex R1F4T (talk) 05:00, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta? R1F4T (talk) 16:03, 23 June 2024 (UTC)

- @R1F4T ? Sohom (talk) 16:09, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta as in bangla wiki all the dates and time is in bangla the module can't Abel to evaluate R1F4T (talk) 16:36, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah that makes sense, I've gone ahead and made some modifications which should allow for the dates to be parsed correctly, you'll probably need to figure out how unsuccessful and successful RFAs are marked and also translate the rest of the UI, but overall it should work now. Sohom (talk) 19:07, 23 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Healthcare dot goof (21:44, 23 June 2024)
Hi Sohom! I've enjoyed completing the tasks suggested to me and, occasionally, researching and writing more thorough sections to those articles. When and how should I decide whether to remove the issues tags on those pages? See for example Alan Bircher: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Bircher — I added more thorough documentation of his awards, updated his current employment status, and added a more thorough section about his firing from a prestigious swim team. --Healthcare dot goof (talk) 21:44, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Healthcare dot goof Your contributions look great, I've gone ahead and removed the tags (you could have done them as well when you think the problem has been adequately addressed). Two points of feedback, make sure to add links to terms that a person might not be familiar with and keep our biography of living people policy in mind when editing anything controversial (unless proven, always mention that the action was alleged etc). Sohom (talk) 22:11, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Super helpful, I'll keep that in mind. Thank you! Healthcare dot goof (talk) 23:04, 23 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility. You can share your comments or questions on the project talkpage. [82]
- The text colors that are used for visited-links, hovered-links, and active-links, were also slightly changed last week to improve their accessibility in both light mode and dark mode. [83]
Problems
- You can copy permanent links to talk page comments by clicking on a comment's timestamp. This feature did not always work when the topic title was very long and the link was used as a wikitext link. This has been fixed. Thanks to Lofhi for submitting the bug. [84]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 June. It will be on all wikis from 27 June (calendar). [85][86]
- Starting 26 June, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link at English Wikipedia, making this feature available for you to use at all wikis. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they were linked to, even if this comment has since been moved elsewhere. You can read more about this feature on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [87]

The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.
The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:
- Generalissima (submissions) with 1,059 points, mostly from 1 featured article on DeLancey W. Gill, 11 good articles, 18 did you know nominations, and dozens of reviews;
- Skyshifter (submissions) with 673 points, mostly from 2 featured articles on Worlds (Porter Robinson album) and I'm God, 5 good articles, and 2 did you know nominations;
- Sammi Brie (submissions) with 557 points, mostly from 1 featured article on KNXV-TV, 5 good articles, and 8 did you know nominations; and
- AryKun (submissions) with 415 points, mostly from 1 featured article on Great cuckoo-dove, with a high number of bonus points from that article.
The full scores for round 3 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 28 featured articles, 38 featured lists, 240 good articles, 92 in the news credits, and at least 285 did you know credits. They have conducted 279 featured article reviews, as well as 492 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 22 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed during Round 4, which starts on 1 July at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [88]
- Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [89]
- If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [90][91]
- Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [92]
- Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Mandailing (
w:btm:
) [93]
Problems
- Editors can once again click on links within the visual editor's citation-preview, thanks to a bug fix by the Editing Team. [94]

Question from Trbhmn (13:29, 2 July 2024)
Hello my mentor, I wanted to ask which is the best way to access a draft in wikipedia? from my understanding I think the only way to access a previously written draft is to just go on my watchlist and click on the raw pages, then just follow the link on my previously written drafts. Is this the way to access it? Thank you so much! --Trbhmn (talk) 13:29, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Trbhmn I think that is a valid way of navigating to a draft, I personally often just type the name of the article/draft in the top search bar as well. I find that to be quicker since I have a lot of watchlisted pages. Sohom (talk) 18:12, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

- Editors using the iOS Wikipedia app who have more than 50 edits can now use the Add an Image feature. This feature presents opportunities for small but useful contributions to Wikipedia.
- Thank you to all of the authors who have contributed to MediaWiki Core. As a result of these contributions, the percentage of authors contributing more than 5 patches has increased by 25% since last year, which helps ensure the sustainability of the platform for the Wikimedia projects.
Problems
- A problem with the color of the talkpage tabs always showing as blue, even for non-existent pages which should have been red, affecting the Vector 2022 skin, has been fixed.
Future changes
- The Trust and Safety Product team wants to introduce temporary accounts with as little disruption to tools and workflows as possible. Recent changes
- Wikimedia developers can now officially continue to use both Gerrit and GitLab, due to a June 24 decision by the Wikimedia Foundation to support software development on both platforms. Gerrit and GitLab are both code repositories used by developers to write, review, and deploy the software code that supports the MediaWiki software that the wiki projects are built on, as well as the tools used by editors to create and improve content. This decision will safeguard the productivity of our developers and prevent problems in code review from affecting our users. More details are available in the Migration status page.
- The Wikimedia Foundation seeks applicants for the Product and Technology Advisory Council (PTAC). This group will bring technical contributors and Wikimedia Foundation together to co-define a more resilient, future-proof technological platform. Council members will evaluate and consult on the movement's product and technical activities, so that we develop multi-generational projects. We are looking for a range of technical contributors across the globe, from a variety of Wikimedia projects. Please apply here by August 10.
- Editors with rollback user-rights who use the Wikipedia App for Android can use the new Edit Patrol features. These features include a new feed of Recent Changes, related links such as Undo and Rollback, and the ability to create and save a personal library of user talk messages to use while patrolling. If your wiki wants to make these features available to users who do not have rollback rights but have reached a certain edit threshold, you can contact the team. You can read more about this project on Diff blog.
- Editors who have access to The Wikipedia Library can once again use non-open access content in SpringerLinks, after the Foundation contacted them to restore access. You can read more about this and 21 other community-submitted tasks that were completed last week.
Changes later this week
- This week, dark mode will be available on a number of Wikipedias, both desktop and mobile, for logged-in and logged-out users. Interface admins and user script maintainers are encouraged to check gadgets and user scripts in the dark mode, to find any hard-coded colors and fix them. There are some recommendations for dark mode compatibility to help.
Future changes
- Next week, functionaries, volunteers maintaining tools, and software development teams are invited to test the temporary accounts feature on testwiki. Temporary accounts is a feature that will help improve privacy on the wikis. No further temporary account deployments are scheduled yet. Please share your opinions and questions on the project talk page. [95]
- Editors who upload files cross-wiki, or teach other people how to do so, may wish to join a Wikimedia Commons discussion. The Commons community is discussing limiting who can upload files through the cross-wiki upload/Upload dialog feature to users auto-confirmed on Wikimedia Commons. This is due to the large amount of copyright violations uploaded this way. There is a short summary at Commons:Cross-wiki upload and discussion at Commons:Village Pump.

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Soumen Mitra you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Question from IND123456 (10:59, 20 July 2024)
Please sir, can you tell me how to add iucn status to the pages related to different species of plants and animals. Thank you. --IND123456 (talk) 10:59, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- @IND123456 I'm not that familiar with articles about animals and plants, however, my understanding is that you can use something like:
{{Speciesbox .... | status = EN | status_system = IUCN3.1 ..... }}
- to add a iucn status. Sohom (talk) 17:23, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for improving article quality in July! - Today's story is about a photographer who took iconic pictures, especially View from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Manhattan, 9/11, yesterday's was a great mezzo, and on Thursday we watched a sublime ballerina. If that's not enough my talk offers chamber music from two amazing concerts. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thomas Hoepker was a interesting read :) I wasn't that active this month, however I did manage to do some work on Soumen Mitra, a former police commissioner with a affinity for restoring old historic buildings in Kolkata. Sohom (talk) 17:14, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Feature News
- Stewards can now globally block accounts. Before the change only IP addresses and IP ranges could be blocked globally. Global account blocks are useful when the blocked user should not be logged out. Global locks (a similar tool logging the user out of their account) are unaffected by this change. The new global account block feature is related to the Temporary Accounts project, which is a new type of user account that replaces IP addresses of unregistered editors that are no longer made public.
- Later this week, Wikimedia site users will notice that the Interface of FlaggedRevs (also known as "Pending Changes") is improved and consistent with the rest of the MediaWiki interface and Wikimedia's design system. The FlaggedRevs interface experience on mobile and Minerva skin was inconsistent before it was fixed and ported to Codex by the WMF Growth team and some volunteers. [96]
- Wikimedia site users can now submit account vanishing requests via GlobalVanishRequest. This feature is used when a contributor wishes to stop editing forever. It helps you hide your past association and edit to protect your privacy. Once processed, the account will be locked and renamed. [97]
- Have you tried monitoring and addressing vandalism in Wikipedia using your phone? A Diff blog post on Patrolling features in the Mobile App highlights some of the new capabilities of the feature, including swiping through a feed of recent changes and a personal library of user talk messages for use when patrolling from your phone.
- Wikimedia contributors and GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) organisations can now learn and measure the impact Wikimedia Commons is having towards creating quality encyclopedic content using the Commons Impact Metrics analytics dashboard. The dashboard offers organizations analytics on things like monthly edits in a category, the most viewed files, and which Wikimedia articles are using Commons images. As a result of these new data dumps, GLAM organisation can more reliably measure their return on investment for programs bringing content into the digital Commons. [98]
Project Updates
- Come share your ideas for improving the wikis on the newly reopened Community Wishlist. The Community Wishlist is Wikimedia’s forum for volunteers to share ideas (called wishes) to improve how the wikis work. The new version of the wishlist is always open, works with both wikitext and Visual Editor, and allows wishes in any language.

- Have you ever wondered how Wikimedia software works across over 300 languages? This is 253 languages more than the Google Chrome interface, and it's no accident. The Language and Product Localization Team at the Wikimedia Foundation supports your work by adapting all the tools and interfaces in the MediaWiki software so that contributors in our movement who translate pages and strings can translate them and have the sites in all languages. Read more about the team and their upcoming work on Diff.
- How can Wikimedia build innovative and experimental products while maintaining such heavily used websites? A recent blog post by WMF staff Johan Jönsson highlights the work of the WMF Future Audience initiative, where the goal is not to build polished products but test out new ideas, such as a ChatGPT plugin and Add a Fact, to help take Wikimedia into the future.
