America's Next Top Model, Cycle 5 is the fifth cycle of America's Next Top Model. The judging panel ensemble was altered - Janice Dickinson was replaced by one of the most recognizable models of the 1960s, Twiggy, and Nolé Marin was replaced by runway coach J. Alexander. The cycle's catch-phrase is "Bling It On".

The international destination during this cycle was London, United Kingdom. 20 year-old Nicole Linkletter, from Grand Forks, North Dakota, won the grand prize of a photo shoot for the cover of Elle Girl, a fashion spread within Elle, a contract for representation with Ford Models, and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics.

The cast size was reduced from 14 to 13, which has been maintained up until Cycle 10. The house that the girls stayed in the first half of the competition was later used for the first season of the VH1 show Rock of Love with Bret Michaels.

Episode Summaries

The Girl With The Twisted Catch Phrase (Part 1) / The Girls Become Superheroes (Part 2)

Original Airdate: September 21, 2005

After moving into their new home, the contestants go to a party with celebrities and have to walk a runway, where Sarah falls. Sarah and out lesbian Kim share a kiss in the limousine on the way home. The week's photoshoot has a superhero theme. While Nik and Lisa excel, Ashley is eliminated because the judges felt that she was not a model and was just trying to get by as a pretty girl.

The Girl Who Needs A Miracle

Original Airdate: September 28, 2005

In the makeover episode, Cassandra, a former beauty pageant competitor who was very attached to her long brown hair, was given the most dramatic makeover. Tyra had doubts about whether Cassandra was more dedicated to pageants or modeling, so she decided to test Cassandra's resolve by giving her a very short blonde hairdo similar to Mia Farrow's character in Rosemary's Baby. Despite much consternation, Cassandra went through with the makeover and shone in the next photo shoot, in which each contestant partnered with another contestant of her choice, and the two were photographed separately in the same couture-inspired outfit.

Pairings Couture / Picture Title
Bre vs. Nik Vintage Mod/ Country Couture
Cassandra vs. Jayla Mod/ Haystack Honeys
Coryn vs. Sarah Country/ Rustic Ruffles
Diane vs. Nicole High Fashion/ Pretty Peasants
Ebony vs. Lisa Commercial/ Farm Hand Fatales
Kim vs. Kyle Formalwear/ Hunting Haberdasheries

While Cassandra, Kim, Lisa, Nik, Coryn, and Nicole shone on their shoots, it was Ebony who was eliminated because of her poor performance in the shoot. At panel during Cassandra's evaluation Tyra reveals that she specifically told them to cut her hair like Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby, so she schedules her hair to be cut shorter.

The Girl Who Makes A Disclaimer

Original Airdate: October 5, 2005

In the next episode, the girls pose as fashion victims being chased by "Miss J" as a fashion police witch. The shoot was taken on a moving platform in front of a green screen. The contestants did not know what was on the green screen. During the shoot, unwilling to have her hair cut shorter, Cassandra refused this assignment and was the first contestant ever to quit. In panel, the judges placed Kim and Sarah in the bottom two. Sarah was eliminated due to a poor photo, a bad runway walk and lack of self-confidence.

The Girl Who Gets A Boob Job

Original Airdate: October 12, 2005

Janice Dickinson, a former panel judge, photographed the remaining contestants in the following plastic surgery-themed photo shoot. Each contestant was photographed as if she had undergone a surgical beauty enhancement procedure gone over the top, as follows:

Model Plastic surgery procedure
Bre Cheek Implant
Coryn Botox
Diane Breast Reduction
Jayla Butt Implant
Kim Breast Implant
Kyle Lip Implant
Lisa Face Lift
Nicole Fake Tan
Nik Hair Extensions

At panel, Nik, Lisa, and Kyle impressed the judges, but Diane failed to show her personality more and landed in the bottom two together with Bre, who wasn't strong enough to handle criticism (despite a strong photo). In the end Bre was saved and Diane was eliminated in her second bottom two appearance due to lack of confidence.

The Girl Who Loves Bubbles And Talks To Plants

Original Airdate: October 19, 2005

The next episode's challenge was to complete a commercial shoot, photo shoot, and press interview, all advertising Secret deodorant, in the space of thirty minutes. Behind the scenes, there was a lot of drama, because Jayla stole Nik's secret, on camera; this caused Nik to lose sight of her objective and ultimately deliver a bad interview. The undeclared prize was that the girl with the strongest photograph would have her picture run as an actual advertisement for the product in print media. The judges agreed that Lisa had the strongest performance this week, but they chose Nicole's photo as the best one, and selected it. Nik's lack of focus and poor performance during her commercial landed her in the bottom two with Coryn. Coryn was eliminated because she could not overcome her melancholy demeanor.

The Girls Who Are 1940s Pin-ups

Original Airdate: October 26, 2005

The contestants shot advertisements for Ford Fusion dressed as Vargas "pin-up" girls. That same week the 7 girls were coached in a black and white photo shoot with Tyra assisting them. Many girls, notably Kim and Lisa impressed the judges, while Kyle was eliminated in this round as she failed to be expressive in her face in the pin-up shot and use the potential she had to stand out in photo shoots.

  • CoverGirl of the Week: Nik Pace

The Girl Who Wants To Step On The Pretty Flower

Original Airdate: November 2, 2005

This was the recap episode of the season. Revealed during the episode was a bird that almost became the girls' mascot. They named it Mr. Bojangles, and upon Kyle's revelation that the bird kept flying into things, Nicole suggested that all non-domesticated birds were blind. The episode's title was taken from a quote by Cassandra, regarding fellow contestant Kyle - who Cassandra remarked was "like a pretty flower that someone wanted to step on".

The Girl Whose Boyfriend Is Cheating On Her

Original Airdate: November 9, 2005

For the following week's episode, the final six contestants shot with the Wild Boyz. Steve-O's immature personality does not sit well with Bre, and neither does Lisa's proclamation that she is going to urinate in a diaper while on-set. Though Nicole and Jayla failed to impress the judges with their photographs and were called forward as the bottom two, Tyra shocked the contestants by announcing that both girls were "packing their bags", then revealing a picture of the Union Jack: both girls were still in the running to becoming Americas next top model because everyone would be going to London. This was the first (and to date, only) non-recap episode in Top Model history in which no contestant was eliminated.

The Girl Who Talks Behind Everyone's Back

Original Airdate: November 16, 2005

Soon after the final six arrived in London, they competed in a risqué photo shoot in which all six girls at once posed in a London phone booth wearing only panties, galoshes and a newspaper, as if hiding from the paparazzi. Kim and Bre engaged in a fight after Kim spotted Bre and Nik talking about her behind her back. Bre retaliated saying that Kim talked about every single person in the house behind their back. Kim denies this comment and Bre refers to her as "an ugly person" At judging, Bre is noted for taking another strong shot. Jayla is in the bottom two because she has done mediocre photographs. Lisa was eliminated for her confidence was perceived as spitfire arrogance, despite taking great photos.

  • CoverGirl of the Week: Bre Scullark

The Girl Who Retaliates

Original Airdate: November 23, 2005

For this week's challenge, the girls had to pose as statues in a park. Nicole struggled as pigeons surrounded her, while Nik won, and chose Jayla and Bre for the prize - a shopping spree. The five remaining contestants then posed as modern interpretations of classical art in an advertisement for Quench body lotion by Olay.

Model Recreated Painting
Bre Mona Lisa
Jayla Whistler's Mother
Kim The Birth of Venus (Botticelli)
Nicole Girl with a Pearl Earring
Nik Vitruvian Man

An argument brewed between Bre and Nicole over Bre's stolen "Granola Bar". All of the girls, with the exception of Kim, impressed the judges at panel, and Kim was subsequently eliminated due to a lack of consistency during the competition.

The Girl Who Takes A Pill

Original Airdate: November 30, 2005

The girls go on go-sees they have to dress mod, bollywood, preppy, and punk. Nik wins the challenge and chooses Nicole to share in the prize. Nicole then picks Jayla. Nik wins 100 frames. Nicole wins 80 frames. Jayla wins 60 frames. Bre only gets 50 frames and can't see herself before the photo shoot.

The final four were photographed in a Bollywood-inspired shoot, reflecting the Indian influence on British fashion in recent years. At panel, Nik and Nicole, once again, wowed the judges, and Jayla was eliminated because, despite her previous strong performance, she did not do as well as the other girls in the photoshoot.

The Girl Who Is On The Cover

Original Airdate: December 7, 2005

In the season finale, Nik, Bre, and Nicole shot a CoverGirl commercial and stills. While Nik's strong performance was an improvement from her previous showing in the Secret shoot, Nicole struggled. Nik was chosen first to continue on in the final round. Nicole's bad performance in the commercial landed her in the bottom two with Bre, who was sent home because she did not seem as strong as the other two girls.

Nik and Nicole then shot a magazine cover with Tyra Banks, photographed by Gilles Bensimon, knowing that the winner's cover would be published in the February 2006 issue of Elle Girl. They then competed in the final runway competition, in which previous Top Model winners Eva Pigford and Naima Mora participated. At the final elimination panel, the judges favored both Nicole and Nik's final performances in the Covergirl shoot, and subsequently Nicole Linkletter was selected to be the fifth winner of America's Next Top Model.
