The PSP-3000 series is an update of the PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite.

System changes

In comparison to the Slim and Lite, the PSP-3000 has an improved LCD screen with an increased colour range, five times the contrast ratio, half the pixel response time to reduce ghosting and blurring effects, and anti-reflective technology to improve outdoor playability.[2] The screen draws more current than the screen for the PSP-2000, initially causing a reduction in the console's battery life by "about 20 minutes" according to SCEA director of hardware marketing John Koller.[2] However, he released a statement retracting this comment, saying that, "the screen of the new PSP draws a little more power" but he claims that, "our engineers in Japan worked to reduce the power consumption of the overall system including its components."[3]

It has an integrated microphone, the goal of which is to establish the PSP as "a viable communication device" according to Sony Europe boss David Reeves.[4] Currently this microphone is required to make use of the builtin Skype WiFi Internet Phone service which was added via firmware updates in January 2008.[5] PSP games will now be playable on interlaced (non-progressive scan) televisions via composite video cables.[2] The start and select buttons have changed from semi-circles to circular rectangles, with the home button being replaced by a "PS Button" similar to the PS3's DualShock 3.[6]

Release

The PSP-3000 was released on October 14, 2008 in North America (US$199.99 for the bundles, in Europe on October 17, 2008,[7], and in Australia on October 23, 2008 for AU$299.95.[8]. The core, priced $169.99 was to be the only way to get a black version. Due to the success of the bundle, Sony has dropped the core and instead, will release a black version bundle some time in December 2008.

The PSP-3000 comes in a bundle of either Mystic Silver or Piano Black in North America. The bundle includes Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, the National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets UMD movie, a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo and a voucher for a PS Store download of Echochrome.

On October 27, 2008, John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing for SCEA announced on the PlayStation Blog that the Ratchet & Clank PSP bundle will be available with a Piano Black PSP-3000 starting December, and that the previously announced 4GB Memory PSP Entertainment Pack was canceled.[9] The new Piano Black bundle includes the same game and UMD movie as the already released Mystic Silver bundle along with a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, the PS Store download voucher however has changed to Everyday Shooter.[10]

In Europe the console will be released in eight different bundles.[6] It will retail for €199 in the Eurozone and £149 in the UK.

The PSP-3000 was released on October 16, 2008 in Japan for ¥19,800 ($184). Two bundles will also be released for the holiday season. Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam: ¥24,840 ($227) on November 20 and Patapon 2 Donchaka: ¥23,800 ($218) on November 27.[11]

In New Zealand, it was released on October 17, 2008 for NZ$325.

The White and Silver have a new smooth coat while the black one still has the glossy coat.

New LCD screen problems

PSP-2000 (Slim & Lite) and PSP-3000 screen comparison, showing different subpixel structure.

Soon after the release of the PSP-3000 it emerged that the new screen showed visible dark lines, similar to traditional scan lines, and displayed interlacing-like artifacts during on-screen motion.[12][13][14][15]

It has been shown that the new screen possesses a new horizontal subpixel structure, which is thought to be the main contributory factor to the screen's scanline-like appearance. The exact cause of the interlace-style artifacts is unknown, but has been confirmed by SCEI as being an intrinsic characteristic of the new LCD panel.[16] On October 21, 2008 SCEA issued the following statement regarding the issue;

On some occasions, scan lines may appear on scenes where brightness changes drastically, due to the hardware features of the new LCD device on PSP-3000. Installed with this new LCD device, PSP-3000 offers more natural and vibrant colors on its screen, but the scan lines have come out to be more visible as a result of improving response time to alleviate the afterimages on PSP-3000. Since this is due to hardware specification, there are no plans for a system software update concerning this issue.[17]
