We discover in the beginning of the film that as a young child, Krishna is extremely intelligent and gifted; for example, he is able to draw beautiful portraits of his parents, grandmother, and animals, perform Herculean feats of strength, run at tremendous speed, communicate with non-human animals, and think with great clarity. He performs an IQ test, which helps the school principal realize his abilities, but his grandmother fears that the greedy may exploit him as they did his father, and so the two move far away into a remote village near some mountains. Krishna spends his childhood there, playing with other children and racing with animals. However, he soon grows frustrated as he sees that all those his age are moving away to the city to greater and grander things and he becomes upset at his grandmother for making him stay in the village.

It is revealed that Rohit is still alive and has been in suspended animation for 20 long years. Dr. Arya, his former colleague, is aware that the computer can only have been activated by Rohit's heartbeat and retina scan. He lied to Sonia and Nisha that Rohit died due to a fire at the lab so they will not look for him. When he uses the computer, Dr. Arya sees his own death at the hands of Krrish, and therefore postpones killing Rohit in order to eliminate this new threat. Because Kristian has been advertised and rewarded as Krrish, Dr. Arya kills him. After Krrish finds his friend dead, he becomes intent on getting revenge against Dr. Arya.

After arriving at Dr. Arya's base, Krrish bursts into the compound after disposing of many guards outside. Priya is eventually taken captive, but Krrish manages to rescue both Rohit and Priya after a dramatic battle wherein Vikram is killed with a gunshot to the head by Dr. Arya, and Dr. Arya is fatally impaled to death, exactly as the computer predicted. Dr. Arya's attempts to prevent his death have led to the prediction coming true, much like a [[self-fulfilling prophecy]]. Along with Rohit and Priya, Krishna returns to his village in India where Sonia is reunited with her son, and Rohit finds out about his wife's death.

The film was mainly shot at Mumbai, India and Singapore.[3] The film was considered the second major superhero film to be produced in Bollywood since Shekhar Kapur's Mr. India (Template:Fy).[4] The film's stunts, choreographed by Tony Ching Siu-Tung, were adapted into storyboard before accepted into the film.[3] During the final scene in the laboratory, the scene was made up using a lot of visual effects, which done by Marc Kolbe and Craig A. Mumma,[5] who also creates visual effects for the predecessor.[6] 3D models of cars, bikes, helicopter, birds and animals were created and animated to match live action footage.[7] Lifebuoy, India's best selling soap brand was promoted along with Krrish, where the film's pictures on it.[8] Half of the film's epic stories were adapted from "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata".[9]

Half of the film's popularity was the economic gross, with product placement, such as Krrish's costumes and action figures.[10] The film becomes a new "trend setter" (film's with new themes) in Bollywood, as well as the India's Cinema.[11] Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie an aggregate rating of 100%, the highest rating for a Hindi—language film,[12] meanwhile, the other review were positive.[13] Being on of the highest grossing film of the decade, Krrish grossed Rs 730 million as total, with Rs 450 million budget.[1][2] It was a box office success and was elevated to a "blockbuster" rating on Box Office India.[14] The film was the second highest grossing film of Template:Fy,[14] fifth highest-grossing Bollywood films in India[15] and the eighteen highest-grossing bollywood films in overseas markets.[16]

The plot of the film connects with the predecessor. For more information on the predecessor's plot, see Koi... Mil Gaya#Plot.

The film begins with Krishna Mehra's (Hrithik Roshan, during 12 years old) intelligence being tested by professors in a special intelligence quotient test, who suspects Krishna conducts his father, Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan)'s superpowers. Krishna answered all the questions correctly, just as grandmother Sonia (Rekha) feared, where she brought Krishna to a far remote village near some mountains to hide Krishna's unique talents. Krishna was left alone by his friends, who doesn't friends him and believes he is "weird". Sonia allowed Krishna to go Singapore, which Krishna promised Sonia that he'll never revealed his powers. During the television programs, all of Krishna attempts to show his powers failed, which actually causes Priya and Honey permanently being fired.[17][18] During Krishna spending his time at Singapore, Krishna meets with Kristian Li (Bin Xia) who's trying to earn money for his young sister's leg surgery operation.

Kristian invites Krishna to the Royal Bombay Circus, Krishna and Priya go there and enjoyed. One of the firework explodes and causes the circus to burnt and a few children was left in the circus. Krishna wants to save the children, and covers his identity using a circus's black mask and his coat (he wore it backwards) under the name of Krrish (originated from Krishna). Kristian received the rewards, replacing Krishna under Krishna's instructions.[19] Afterwards, the scene moves to Dr. Siddhant Arya, who visited an island at Singapore, where he waits to see his future-seeing-computer. Krishna called Priya, which Priya's mother (Kiran Juneja) answered the call and said she doesn't knew anything about Krishna and his proposal to Priya and found that Priya cheated him, but Priya started to actually love Krishna.[19]

Production

The Koi... Mil Gaya film series begun when production started to begin on Koi... Mil Gaya,[20] with Hritik Roshan in the title role, along with Preity Zinta as his love interest.[21] Several websites claimed the film's story was based on Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.[21][22][23][24] The film released and was considered as a "blockbuster".[25] Koi... Mil Gaya revitalized media interest in the franchise, and a sequel was prepared,[26] which Hrithik Roshan reveals about it at Hong Kong.[27] The film initially titled Koi... Tumsa Nahin, which Film Kraft Production always produces films with "K" as the main alphabet on the title.[27]

Later, after several months, the Roshans confirmed and announced the film.[28][29][27] In the announcement, Preity Zinta was confimed to be replaced by Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra.[28] She said, "Yes. I am in a sequel. The story will start where Koi… Mil Gaya ended."[28] Rakesh also confimed that the film wouldn't be an action film, but the story was.[30] The filming was mainly at Mumbai, India and Singapore.[3] More than a month (more than 31 days) were spent during filming at Singapore.[31] Three over four of the film was filmed at Singapore.[31]

The locations were Singapore's famous zoo, Singapore National Library’s Plaza and more.[32] Singapore's polices were on the filming location to protect the vehicles and other filming equipments.[31] Robinson Road was one of the main filming location, where during the filming, it rains heavily, which makes the filming delayed a lot of times, costing an amount of $25000 loss.[31] There were traffic blocks because the film's action scenes required no less than 250 feet high industrial cranes weighing 30 tons that too two of them, in case one broke down.[33]

Several major things affect the film's development and production stages. During the film was in development, Prakash Jaju was sued by Rakesh Roshan under a case of threatening calls to him to settle his accounts with Priyanka Chopra.[34] Prakash was also being asked to withdraw his case at court about the film was develop using illegal money.[34] Hirthik Roshan was performing a stunt, a flying stunt, where one of the wire tied on his leg broke and Hrithik fall from 50 feets.[35] Lucky, there was a safety net down on the street, which eventually unhurt Hrithik.[35] Hrithik describes the accident as a "freak accident", "I was skydiving to my death till I fell on a six-feet-long canopy of a shop that was out because of the slight drizzle. The canopy had iron rods. But I missed those rods too. What do I say? I guess the right word to describe the situation would be [jadoo] (magic)."[35] Hrithik broke his right thumb and a toe during the strenuous training for the ambitious wire work used in the film.[36] Despite only 25 days of training in China, his instructor, Siu-Tung Ching, thought that he could pull off stunts that usually take years of training.[36] While performing a stunt scene on the circus set, Hrithik suffered a hamstring tear in his right leg, doctors prescribed bed rest for two weeks, but he continued shooting after two days using painkillers.[36] He also singed his hair while running through a fire in the same action scene.[36]

Considering the film was a superhero film, the film used a lot of visual effects, which involved 1,200 shots.[37][38] Marc Kolbe and Craig A. Mumma creates the visual effects for the film.[39][40] Rakesh describes the film's visual effects as, "If you liked the visual effects in Koi... Mil Gaya, you'll find them far better in Krrish. I don't think audiences have seen anything like this in Hindi films."[41] The film won a National Film Awards for Best Special Effects.[42]

Cultural references

Underworld poster, which is an allusion to Krrish poster. Poster has to be flipped for the same orientation.[43]

The film's poster (theatrical poster) is an allusion to Template:Fy's Underworld, a fantasy film.[43] The similarity between the posters (Underworld's poster flipped) are the costumes (black) and the background.[43] Rohit (Hrithik Roshan), who creates a computer to see the future and sees his own murder was a dedication to Paycheck, where Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) also sees his murder through a computer that is able to see the future.[43][44][45] Paycheck is a film adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story of the same name.[45] Tom Cruise's Minority Report, an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story, has a similarity with the film, where the film's future-seeing-computer is the same with Krrish future-seeing-computer.[43][44] During chasing Dr. Siddhant Arya, Krrish was outrunning a bus with children on the streets of Singapore, which was a reference to Superman, where Superman does the same thing.[44] The rising ring of light in the scientist's lab was a scene adapted from Template:Fy silent science fiction film, Metropolis.[44] The Matrix has many similarity with Krrish,[44] including the scene where Krishna fights about twenty pupils at Dr. Siddhant's island (hundreds of Agent Smiths in The Matrix Reloaded)[46] and Krishna's superhero costumes were just the same as Neo portrayed by Keanu Reeves.[44] Krrish chases Dr. Siddhant, where he jumps through the gap of a truck, referring to Spider-Man in Spider-Man 2.[44] In the flashback that Grandmother Sonia tells to Krishna, the scene features several scenes from Koi... Mil Gaya, which actually involved Rakesh Roshan and Preity Zinta as cast of the film.[44]

Reception

Krrish was the second top grossing Bollywood film of 2006, according to Box Office India, earning over Rs. 73 crores (730 million) net gross in India alone and was classified as "blockbuster".[2] The film grossed Rs. 6 crores (60 million) alone in United Kingdom, Rs. 8 crores (80 million) at North America and Rs. 5 crores (50 million) at the other foreign countries, bringing the total overseas gross to Rs. 19 crores (190 million) (rated as "Semi Hit" at Box Office India).[16] The film was rated "PG" during it's release.[47]

Krrish received overwhelming positive reviews from viewers. Krrish holds a 100% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[12] In India, Taran Adarsh of IndiaFM.com wrote that "Krrish is a terrifically exciting and compelling experience", and even considered it superior to Superman, Batman and Spider-Man.[48] B4U TV also gave a generally positive review, praising the second half of the film. Jaspreet Pandohar of BBC was critical of the script for being "low on originality" but praised Hrithik Roshan's performance and the action scenes choreographed by Tony Ching Siu-Tung.[49] Raam Tarat, who rated the film 7/10, said it is "a mellifluence of Superman, Spider-Man and The Matrix"[50][51].

Overseas, Richard James Havis of The Hollywood Reporter stated, "This Bollywood epic crunches together romance, comedy, extraterrestrials, martial arts, dancing and action to tell an entertaining story about a reluctant Indian superhero" but said it may be "far too crazed for foreign viewers." David Chute of L.A. Weekly said it was a "hearty pulp cinema that really sticks to your ribs." Ronnie Scheib of Variety said it was an "enjoyable, daffily improbable escapist romp." Laura Kern of The New York Times said it was a blend of "carefree romance, show-stopping action and sci-fi."[12] Meanwhile, Leo Goldsmith of notcoming.com criticized the special effects and for "wearing its corporate sponsorship on its sleeve" in "its dialogue" and "every other shot of the film."[52]

Krrish was one of the India's nomination for 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, but it ultimately lost to Rang De Basanti.[53][54] However, neither film received an Academy Award nomination.[55] Although that, Krrish won numerous awards, especially to Hrithik Roshan, including; IIFA Best Actor Award, Star Screen Award Best Actor, Zee Cine Award Best Actor- Male, BFJA - Best Actor Award (Hindi), GIFA Best Actor and a Filmfare Best Actor Award nomination.[56] The film won three Filmfare Awards (Filmfare Best Special Effects Award, Filmfare Best Action Award and Filmfare Best Background Score Award) and was nominated for the remaining awards (Filmfare Best Villain Award, Filmfare Best Director Award, Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award and Filmfare Best Film Award.[57][58]
