Points of interest related to Sports on Wikipedia: Outline – Portal – Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Stubs – Assessment – To-do |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

- Texas challenge flag (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
- (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL)
It would appear to me this is a neologism. The article lacks references, and with the required WP:BEFORE done, that would seem to be because it is a new term that is without attestation in reliable sources. A move to a notional Draft:Texas challenge flag considered, but I doubt in would, at least in the near future - let's say by 2025 - be accepted. As always, please do prove me wrong. Shirt58 (talk) 🦘 08:32, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe the title is bad but the incidents are verifiable and the reliable sources are connecting those incidents as being related (to the idea that since the game has to stop if objects are thrown on the field, fans are doing such throwing because they disagree with officials/referees' calls). [I am the article creator] (u t c m l ) 🔒 ALL IN 🧿 10:24, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Note: This discussion has been included in the list of American football-related deletion discussions. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 12:43, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete. There are no reliable sources provided that refer to this topic. The only sources I find that refer to this are eith not reliable or not independent. E.g. this. Delete per WP:NOTNEO, WP:GNG, and bordering on WP:HOAX. Cbl62 (talk) 15:06, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete. The fan/flag situation at the game was somewhat notable, but no cited sources use this WP:NEO article title. Could add mentions to 2024 NCAA Division I FBS football season instead... or try to establish notability of the Texas vs. Georgia game itself for its own article. I would support creation of an article like Interference (baseball) for gridiron football where notable instances like this can be listed. Perhaps should list it at List of violent spectator incidents in sports...
"Incidents of object or snow throwing are included when it ... causes significant delays or cancellation of the event."

- Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Events, American football, and Connecticut. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 12:49, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Delete Appeares pretty routine, not sure why this needs an article. Could be redirected to 1927 Georgia Bulldogs football team#Week 2: at Yale. Reywas92Talk 20:10, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Delete, there is nothing in the article or in any sources that explains why this game could be notable in the first place. A redirect seems pointless because this seems to be a very unlikely search term. Esolo5002 (talk) 06:18, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Delete Searching on Google there isn't any WP:CONTINUEDCOVERAGE. Might as well have the redirect. Esb5415 (talk) (C) 00:25, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

- I had no idea about the previous afds, I found information about this show on the internet, and I checked it has a wikidata page and Hindi Wikipedia, I just tried to translate the Hindi version to English with additional references and following editing policies, please let me know if I made a mistake.
- Initially, I made this with the AFC template but because there’s a long waiting time, I moved it directly to the mainspace.
- Thanks.
- Zuck28 (talk) 14:20, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- You didn't do anything wrong @Zuck28 and you're not required to use AfC. Each Wikipedia has their own guidelines for notability. Discussions here have concluded that it doesn't meet the requirements. Since the last discussion was a month ago, it's unlikely but consensus can change. The community will decide here whether it has. Star Mississippi 14:53, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Delete and salt after 2 previous AFDs, this should have been WP:SALTed to protect against recreation. It doesn't meet English Wikipedia's WP:GNG standards. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:11, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Teams that compete in a barely notable tournament, so don't need separate team articles. One team from the NPL was already redirected after AFD (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pokhara Avengers- though editors keep reverting that redirect against consensus)- and the same non notability applies to these other NPL teams. - Keep: This team already participated in the Dhangadi Premier League and have many coverage article about it in Nepal.Godknowme1 (talk) 13:47, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- If coverage exists, please add it. Everything on these articles so far is WP:ROUTINE. Just because they've competing in another league, that doesn't mean we need a separate team article, unless they meet WP:GNG with WP:SIGCOV. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:19, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Delete. The Nepal Premier League is notable, but the teams in it are not. AA (talk) 16:20, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- Keep Sporting franchises that sign international players are notable on their own. MurrayBird (talk) 03:10, 29 October 2024 (UTC) — MurrayBird (talk • contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.
- That's not how WP:GNG works, and WP:NOTINHERITED applies to this argument too. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:48, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Delete. Per nom. Shrug02 (talk) 17:53, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Keep : NPL Franchise teams are popular internationally and many internationally known players are signed by these players. User: NiseEdits (talk) 16:35, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Another WP:ILIKEIT vote violating WP:NOTINHERITED. I hope the closing admin realises that none of these keep votes have mentioned WP:GNG or attempted to provide substantial reliable sources. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:29, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Any sources to assert notability?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, ✗plicit 13:21, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Delete: This article does not pass WP:GNG. All of the sources are WP:ROUTINE none of them are notable, and there's no WP:SIGCOV. I agree with the nom's WP:NOTINHERITED argument as well - the fact that some of the players are notable does not qualify the team for a standalone article. DesiMoore (talk) 16:13, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Pokhara Avengers (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

Repeatedly recreated over the redirect, but as per the last AFD, this team isn't notable enough for a separate article, even though the page has been updated some more. I propose restore the redirect and WP:SALT it. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:29, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

I've been trying to draftify these articles, but they keep getting moved back by the creator. The two AfDs that have run for a week and weren't relisted were redirected. This looks like a WP:GNG and WP:SPORTCRIT failure. In the Japanese Wikipedia, all sources are non-independent (published by the subject's employers) except for two dead at-s.com links. The claim to notability, playing 60 minutes in Japan's second league and 201 minutes in the third league, is extremely weak. Geschichte (talk) 15:36, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Massively fails WP:GNG and WP:SPORTCRIT. Was rightfully prodded only 5 minutes after it was created, but now it's time to end it once and for all. I can't find any independent coverage passing WP:SIGCOV. Having done some research, it doesn't look like this person has had a notable football career. Claims like he has played for Kidderminster Harriers could not be verified; he played for a team that competed in the Dutch first level, but it was already March 2019 at that stage, by which time the club was in the fourth tier. ANY PLANS Tim Myers and his soccer-mad mates might have had for these school holidays went on hold early last month. Against the odds, the Myers-led Soccer 2 team beat Australian champions FC Melbourne 2-1 on an outer field at North Harbour Stadium, and with it won the chance to lace their boots at the Manchester United Premier Cup tournament in Hong Kong. The under-15 team ... leaves tomorrow on the trip of their lives. As captain, Myers has the honour of leading the team, who include two of his Auckland Grammar schoolmates, into the unknown ... Since being selected for Soccer 2 this year when he was juggling cricket and soccer, Myers has been aware of the big prize, but admits he and his team-mates did not carry any great expectations into the game against Melbourne. When Soccer 2 fell a goal behind after 20 minutes to an Australian team so confident of success that they did not turn up until the day before the game, he was not too surprised, but said he and the rest did not give up ... Myers, a defender who first kicked a ball as a five-year-old at the Eastern Suburbs club where he continues to play, is under no illusions as he prepares for the 10-day trip, which will include, realistically, four pool games, but not much else...

I moved this to draftspace, but it was moved back unsourced. Of course, a WP:BEFORE search would prove difficult, at best, for events that happened in the 1930s. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 21:55, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

- Keep per SportingFlyer. Malta was a crown colony in the 1930s and had a few newspapers then, Gazzetta Maltese (Italian) covered sports, Times of Malta founded in the 1930s covered sports, I don't know how complete this List of newspapers in Malta is, however, there are still ways to search the old newspapers then. So a true WP:BEFORE can never be done until someone has actually reviewed these old publications. Is wikipedia going to very strict and delete what is in essence would be classic archival of historical season results for this tournament? I ponder that as, this kind of article is what I believe the WP:Football project should be creating. Govvy (talk) 09:40, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Govvy I tried the alternative of draftication due to similar concerns of my own (but with a more deletionistic bias), but the article sat in draftpace for a few days and then was moved back unchanged. The creator had "articlecountitis," attemping to make similar unsourced articles rapidly, but has since stopped. Of all those articles, I think this one is the only one which has any hope to be kept; hopefully, if that happens, either you or SportingFlyer adds the proper sourcing and summarizes it. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 10:15, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- There are several of these at AfD at the same time, all created by one user. The main problem with them is the complete lack of sourcing, and we're not in a position to find one. They also contain some errors. If an original source had been provided, none of these would be at AfD! These are difficult sources to track down, they shouldn't be on us to find, so I don't really care if some are kept and some are redirected, but I do want to make the point that these should be eligible for articles. SportingFlyer T·C 17:12, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- @SportingFlyer I'm of the view that redirects are cheap, in part they are a good deal easier to revert than an outright deletion (basically, I'm a deletionist, but at my core, I'm a redirectionist/mergist). I'm okay with redirection or being kept but with sourcing as well. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 22:18, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Redirectto Staffordshire Senior Cup, not sure why you call Staffordshire local, it's a big area!! - Redirect as above. GiantSnowman 18:13, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
- It doesn't really serve as a useful redirect though, firstly because none of the other seasons of this cup standalone exist as articles or redirects, and secondly, it's useful to no one as people aren't really going to search that season specifically just to redirect to the overall article. Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:20, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

- I remain of the view that a redirect is the most suitable outcome. GiantSnowman 08:39, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
- Keep - I'm finding a lot of references to that season's competition, particularly in the BNA archive, which I don't have access to. There's less in Newspapers.com because of it's limited UK collection - but I've added 8 references to the article and expanded, from 8 different publications. Can User:GiantSnowman review these? There seems to be plenty of further references available to fully document the season, some surprisingly detailed! Nfitz (talk) 21:58, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
- None of them look like anything other than results or routine news. GiantSnowman 09:41, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- I didn't link any results. These were all text - admittedly one was very brief. Routine refers to sports scores. And this is more than that. Also, someone needs to look at the BNA search results. Most importantly - from your edit history, you spent no more than 30 seconds reviewing 8 references. Your original vote was equally as fast. I really think that not much weight should be given to this redirect opinion. Nfitz (talk) 19:16, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- I got temporary BNA access, so in recognition that many of the references are local, I added 5 more references from other parts of England. Also, I added a second reference from the The Staffordshire Sentinel that is surprisingly detailed, giving a background of the competition before the final match was to be played. So that should sort any remaining GNG concerns. Nfitz (talk) 00:55, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- None of them look like anything other than results or routine news. GiantSnowman 09:41, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

- Delete yes there have been improvements to the sourcing, but I do not see evidence of WP:SUSTAINED coverage. All of the BNA articles listed are from the time of the matches, when of course there will be some coverage. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:54, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Comment @Joseph2302: Is a topic talked about overtime? Well, the clubs that played in this have the ability to mention it in their match day programmes when they play each other again. That does constitute what you call primary sourcing. However, this in essence is really a historical record on the competition. Having on wikipedia can also give the ability for people to find it and out source it. However, What do you want wikipedia to do? There are policies upon policies on wikipedia, but if you don't want to keep a historic record on wikipedia, then whats wikipedia for? An encyclopaedic archive of historical events and information? This is one of those things, sigcov, sustained are policies, guidelines to adhere, sometimes we do need to look beyond that. But hey, that's my ... two cents. Regards. - And? Provide that "significant coverage" that covers HK Alfa then, and as you have been told at some other AfDs, playing in a league does NOT guarantee notability anymore since the notability system was overhauled in 2022, they simply need to pass WP:GNG regardless of which league they play in. If the league receives "significant coverage", it would only make the league notable, and not all of its clubs, especially not some random amateur clubs that only existed for 4 seasons. And there is no second division anyway, so "top-level" doesn't mean much, they didn't need to climb to this division, Slovenian ice hockey only has like 6 teams, of which only 2-3 are professional while other are "hobby clubs", including Alfa.
