Project

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.

  • Delete Notability has not been established since last AfD. The one source reads like an advertisement, which does not establish notability. The result was no consensus with leave to speedy renominate. The rationales for 2 of the 3 keep !votes were solely based on the nominator being blocked.   • Keep, if not start all over again: Short and sweet, unreferenced and a poorly edited article is not a reason to call for a deletion. Talking of notability, it is a famous amateur race or was in the 1990s when it was made in comparison to its quicker and big budgeted French counterpart. There maybe a few reliable third party web sources [1][2][3][4] and some more if I can find any, but most of these are likely to be print sources from the 1990s when it was at its height of notability. Of the 4 given by Donnie Park, the first is a press release, the second may be legit, the third and fourth are the same and look like a press release again. Comment Fair enough that this may be notable but however when I saw it, it was (and still is as I write) a poorly written article with no references. speedy renomination due to last AfD. fails WP:ORG nothing in gnews [5]. the article is basically a website for followers of the club, which play in a low level league in South Australia. it is not like the Australian Football League or VFL. LibStar (talk) 03:13, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They are :
ABC Radio broadcasts the Riverland Football League Grand Final - is about the Riverland Football League Grand Final and not the club.
Renmark Rovers reign is a LOCAL paper piece about a match the club won, given a club was going to win if the Loxton Tigers had won it would have been about them.
Renmark Rovers celebrates 100 years is about the club being 100 years old
Modra and Riccuito prepare for battle is not about the club.
So only one is what you could call "Significant coverage" (the one on the club being 100 years old). So still fails WP:GNG and WP:CLUB. Codf1977 (talk) 12:27, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I mistook you. The Grand Final article is about the grand final that the club took part in, the fourth article i=links the player to the club in his early years and his final game.   • I don't believe that WP:CLUB was intended to cover sports teams. WP:ORG makes no mention of sports teams anywhere in the narrative. I haven't found a guideline that specifically covers the notability of teams. {{WP:SPORT]] is inder development, but does not address teams yet, so I will base my rebuttal on precedent. Single-A baseball teams are included in Wikipedia and they get marginal regional coverage in most places and almost never get national coverage. This team is no different than that. It's not perplexing. You are over-simplifying. From reading WP:CLUB it seems clear that it is intended for things like local chapters of national clubs ([[i.e. Rotary Club). I can't answer your second question, as I am not familiar with the ins and outs of lower level (or senior level for that matter) Australian football. All I can say is that the article now meets WP:GNG based on the following: They compete in a notable league (Riverland Football League) and they have press coverage from multiple reliable sources. It's not going to hurt my feelings if it goes, I just happen to think that it is at least as notable as minor league baseball teams. Movementarian (Talk) 12:12, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep The club's notability has been established through it's age, it's coverage both in terms of region (It represents the largest city in the Riverland area of South Australia) and media (The local paper - the Murray Pioneer - is one of the major regional papers in the state), and the fact that a highly recognisable player and personality played for them, and in fact started his footballing life with them IIRC puts this over the line. It is a semi professional club, and to take out clubs simply because it's not fully professional would create a dangerous precedent that would remove all of the local level of football in Australia. The game at the local level is far more notable than the lower reaches of English soccer or the same level of American baseball. AFL-Cool 13:30, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The age of the club is the only thing that to me lends an air of notability to the club, most of the rest of the points you make are based on WP:INHERITED notability.   • Keep - I don't buy the argument that the article about the 2009 Grand Final is inadmissible as demonstration of notability. How do you figure? Premise: The article is about the winner of the match. Fact: Remark Football Club is the winner of the match. Conclusion: The article is about Renmark Football Club. One article with significant coverage and several with trivial coverage Several articles with more than trivial coverage is enough to satisfy the GNG. I'm quite sure there would be more articles available at microfiche databases, but I'm not about to go find them. A history of the Renmark area might be a good place to go to find a bombproof source demonstrating notability. It would appear to me this is a neologism. The article lacks references, and with the required WP:BEFORE done, that would seem to be because it is a new term that is without attestation in reliable sources. A move to a notional Draft:Texas challenge flag considered, but I doubt in would, at least in the near future - let's say by 2025 - be accepted. As always, please do prove me wrong. Maybe the title is bad but the incidents are verifiable and the reliable sources are connecting those incidents as being related (to the idea that since the game has to stop if objects are thrown on the field, fans are doing such throwing because they disagree with officials/referees' calls). I had no idea about the previous afds, I found information about this show on the internet, and I checked it has a wikidata page and Hindi Wikipedia, I just tried to translate the Hindi version to English with additional references and following editing policies, please let me know if I made a mistake.
Initially, I made this with the AFC template but because there’s a long waiting time, I moved it directly to the mainspace.

You didn't do anything wrong @Zuck28 and you're not required to use AfC. Each Wikipedia has their own guidelines for notability. Discussions here have concluded that it doesn't meet the requirements. Teams that compete in a barely notable tournament, so don't need separate team articles. One team from the NPL was already redirected after AFD (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pokhara Avengers- though editors keep reverting that redirect against consensus)- and the same non notability applies to these other NPL teams. I've been trying to draftify these articles, but they keep getting moved back by the creator. The two AfDs that have run for a week and weren't relisted were redirected. My understanding is that there was a consensus at one point to have these sorts of articles, but consensus might be changing. Having done some research, it doesn't look like this person has had a notable football career. Claims like he has played for Kidderminster Harriers could not be verified; he played for a team that competed in the Dutch first level, but it was already March 2019 at that stage, by which time the club was in the fourth tier. Keep I think the two NZ Herald articles clearly exceeds the notability requirements for WP:SPORTCRIT and WP:GNG.
FYI anyone can access Proquest content via the Wikipedia Library if you have enough edits to your name. An inaccessible source is still a source. However the proquest links above appear to just be the NZ Herald sources already in the article.
He is also mentioned here[1][2] as replacing another injured player in a world cup qualifying game, with the coach saying, "Tim is another promising young player from the ASB Premiership.     I got temporary BNA access, so in recognition that many of the references are local, I added 5 more references from other parts of England. Also, I added a second reference from the The Staffordshire Sentinel that is surprisingly detailed, giving a background of the competition before the final match was to be played.   • Comment @Joseph2302: Is a topic talked about overtime? Well, the clubs that played in this have the ability to mention it in their match day programmes when they play each other again. That does constitute what you call primary sourcing. However, this in essence is really a historical record on the competition. Having on wikipedia can also give the ability for people to find it and out source it. However, What do you want wikipedia to do? There are policies upon policies on wikipedia, but if you don't want to keep a historic record on wikipedia, then whats wikipedia for? An encyclopaedic archive of historical events and information? This is one of those things, sigcov, sustained are policies, guidelines to adhere, sometimes we do need to look beyond that. But hey, that's my ... two cents. Regards. And? Provide that "significant coverage" that covers HK Alfa then, and as you have been told at some other AfDs, playing in a league does NOT guarantee notability anymore since the notability system was overhauled in 2022, they simply need to pass WP:GNG regardless of which league they play in. If the league receives "significant coverage", it would only make the league notable, and not all of its clubs, especially not some random amateur clubs that only existed for 4 seasons. And there is no second division anyway, so "top-level" doesn't mean much, they didn't need to climb to this division, Slovenian ice hockey only has like 6 teams, of which only 2-3 are professional while other are "hobby clubs", including Alfa.
