MILHIST Military Aviation questionnaire

This is a short questionaire I am conducting to give me an idea of what others would like the task force to achieve and their capabilities that might contribute positively to the task force. The four questions of this questionaire are:

1. My strengths

   I have some deeper knowledge of aviation subjects relating to Finland, to a somewhat lesser degree I am also interested in German, Russian/Soviet and Nordic aviation subjects. I have also tried to follow up on new aircraft projects. I know several languages so I can also translate entire articles or paragraphs from other language wikipedias. I have been a wikipedian for quite a long time, and currently I am an administrator on enwp (I have also had oversight and admin rights on other language wp's). I used to work with smaller code-writing projects such as creating infoboxes and such but this has diminished due to time constraints.

2. Articles I'd like to see the task force improve

   Finnish Air Force and its aces

   Warsaw Pact air forces

   Generally air force history from the cold war period, most articles have neglected sections on this time period

   Editing many of the articles involving Italian aircraft. These have lots of information, but are in many cases poorly written (the same is rquired also of French Navy ships, but this is not of interest here).

3. Sources which I have

   Too many to mention, I have quite a lot of printed resources, but most are currently stored in Finland (I am spending 95% of my time in Norway and Germany due to my work)

   I like to think that I also have skills for finding necessary information from different resources other than printed books (contacts, electronic references and snippets of information from available electronic publications etc)

4. Articles I'm willing to provide assistance

   I suspect that my future contributions will mostly involve Finnish Air Force-related subjects, as most of the avaition articles outside my scope (see question 1) now have reached a certain level of maturity. I am not sure I can devote so much time to the project that I could contribute to more to these in any significant manner. I do know what is expected from a new aircraft article, and if I stumble upon one that doesn't live up to the standards I will try to do the necessary work to improve it.

The gender of ships

Hey - noticed the comments on the GAN for Tula. Ships are indeed normally she...except for Russian and German ships. The Russian/Soviet and German languages have their ships being masculine - they refer to them as "he". - The Bushranger _{One ping only} 22:12, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for butting in but the German articles for the Bismarck and Tirpitz both use die in the lead sentence, die is feminine, der is masculine and das is neutral (noting that we should not use WP articles as a reference). I'd have to do some digging to find a reference - this is one of those things that "I've always known it, never bothered looking it up" - pretty sure I first learned it from Clancy (Red October of course, hardly a RS. ;) ) Can't recall where I saw the Germans using it but as a ship nut it stuck in my brain. Best to use feminine until RS'd otherwise - most non-Russian sources will use "she" anyway, and I doubt Captain Raimus will be popping up to yell at us about it. =P And yeah, Clancy's novels are good - up through Without Remorse, anyway. Rainbow Six was OK, but from The Bear and the Dragon onwards, the less said the better. (And the less said about the movie version of Sum of All Fears the better - Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan? I don't think you can make the "Batting", "Bowling" and "Fielding" sortable since they span more than one column each. I've encountered similar problems with List of Boeing 777 operators, but it's been solved. The best thing I can think of is to move the rows "Batting", "Bowling" and "Fielding" to the top, so "Inn", "NO", etc are on the second row. --Sp33dyphil ©^hat_ontributions 02:55, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm currently compiling a list of sources (both offline and online) about the K-141 Kursk, the K-18 Karelia, and a number of X-class submarine (notably Oscar and Typhoon). Recently I've created Russian submarine K-114 Tula, which, although there aren't many English sources, I plan to take to MilHist A-class status. Since you've a valuable relationship with the Soviet/Russian naval leadership, I'd like to know if they're willing to provide any info on the operational aspects on these boats -- there's hardly any extensive and reliable documentation on the submarine branch of the Russian Navy. --Sp33dyphil ©^hat_ontributions 04:27, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

To be honest, I don't think there's anymore reliable information Tula operations during 1991–2000, so I think that article won't be getting any bigger. Could you verify the sentence "During 1987–1988, the boat conducted seven patrols, including five in the Arctic, 17 combat duties, and firing of twelve missiles"? In the ref, it says, "In the period from 1987 to 1998, "Tula" performed 7 fighting services, including 5 in the high Arctic, 17 combat duty, 12 rockets fired from an underwater position. Passed 134,856 running miles and 77,245 of them in a submerged position." Now, compare that to the Google Translated version of ru:Тула (подводная лодка). I'd invite you to check out http://www.ww2.dk/new/rvsn/Sources.htm. If Michael has access to all those books on the RSVN, think about the books that must be available in Russian on the Soviet Navy. Give him time though - he's quite slow to respond. Try also a Google Scholar search in Russian on the boat's name. Also check Eastview Press. As for A-class now, go ahead: it's completely A-Class standard. For the verification of the text, go to User:Ezhiki - my Russian is limited. Please tell him you came at my request, ask him to help, and tell him you're not worried about translation of exact technical terms; his military Russian/English translation knowledge is not full US/NATO standard. I've had a quick look at the top results from Google Scholar, but all the information are already in the article. I'm afraid that, with much information, the article will fail, at MilHist ACR, on 1) comprehensiveness due to a lack of information, and 2) the reliability of current sources (WikiMapia and Deepstorm.ru). Do you have any suggestion on what I should do to address the latter? There simply isn't much choice. I've requested assistance from user Федоров, who has a relation with the Soviet and Russian Navies. I doubt if they'll disclose any operational data of their submarines, unlike the more liberal US Navy. All in all, Russian submarine K-114 Tula has just ran aground (hahaha), and I don't think nobody could help her. Kursk all over again ... --Sp33dyphil ©^hat_ontributions 10:30, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

If you think it might fail a review, don't run it through one. Have a quiet word to a couple of the senior coordinators and ask them about what they think of Deepstorm.ru. Wikimapia indeed is out. However, short articles (like USS Kentucky (BB-66) have gone through FAC before; you should not fail on comprehensiveness; this is a Russian subject after all. Let me have a think also. It is a fairly accurate translation, although somewhat abridged compared to the original (but only the secondary details have been abridged). Please translate the whole sentence, particularly "7 боевых служб" and "17 боевых дежурств" -- I ran them through Google but I can't distinguish "seven military service" from "17 combat duty". Could you also check whether that Russian paragraph, which has existed from 27 June 2007, was a translation from http://wikimapia.org/20830035/K-114-Tula-Delta-IV-Class-Submarine-SSBN, or vice versa. Here's the translation:

“ During 1987–1998, Tula conducted 7 combat duty operations, including 5 in the high-latitude regions of the Arctics, as well as 17 combat alert missions and 12 underwater missile-firing exercises. 134856 miles were traversed, 77245 of which were in a submerged state. ”

Also please note that Buckshot was right when he said that I am in no way a specialist in military terminology, but the above translation should be pretty close to the original meaning (and if anything sounds especially awkward, let me know, I can probably come up with an alternative term).

Regarding the Wikimapia passage, it seems indeed to be an attempt at the literal translation of the Russian text, so I would say that the Russian text was written first, especially considering that the text in Russian is well-written, while the passage on Wikimapia is horrible. However, I suspect the Russian passage in ru-wiki was lifted from some other Russian-language source (perhaps verbatim) without attribution, but that's just a hunch.

By the by, Wikimapia really shouldn't be used as a source for anything anyway, since it is just a wiki.

• Check that there are is no copy-right violation.
• When done, please wikify, or link, words that are relevant in the article. The first paragraph of "History" might be a good place to start.
• Add references to everything.
• Convert the aim section from quote to prose.
• How come there's a separate section for "Notable presidents since 1904"? I suggest merging it with the table

There isn't much difference between Australian and British English, except for a drop in sophistication in normal talking and several different words. But, the latter do not apply to meteorology, so I wouldn't/can't change anything in the article to suit your perceived need. I would've thought meteorological words constitute their own language, so I'd be more worried about ensuring such words, instead of Aus Eng, are present in the article.
