Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu is a 2011 action comedy family animated TV series that centers around a young man named Kai who transforms his life from Blacksmith to Ninja. The series is based on the Lego toy series of the same name. Two pilot episodes were shown on Cartoon Network on January 14, 2011, sometimes split into four episodes. A video-game called Lego Battles: Ninjago was based on the movie. Due to the popularity of the pilot episodes, the series was launched from December 2011 - April 2012 alongside a new line of sets marketed as "Rise of the Snakes". The pilot episodes were released on DVD during 2011, and the first season became available on DVD on June 26, 2012.[1]
Plot
Prologue
Long before time had a name, Ninjago was created by the first Spinjitzu master, using the four weapons of Spinjitzu: the Nunchucks of Lightning, the Sword of Fire, the Shurikens of Ice and the Scythe of Quakes. When he passed away he instructed to his sons Garmadon and Wu to protect the four weapons. But Garmadon was filled with evil (thanks to the ancient demon snake called the Great Devourer, whose venom consumed nearly all Garmadon's morals and emotions) and tried to take the four weapons himself. There was a battle between brothers and Garmadon was banished to the underworld, turning into a being without life, but unable to die. Wu, knowing his brother would find a way to escape from his imprisonment and make his dreams into reality, hid the Four Weapons across Ninjago and placed elemental dragons there to guard them.
Pilot Episodes: Masters of Spinjitzu
The pilot episodes feature an aging ninja master, Sensei Wu, struggling to train four young Ninja in the ways of an ancient battle art called Spinjitzu (which manifests as a spinning movement faster than any normal fighting style) to defeat his evil brother Lord Garmadon, ruler of the underworld, and stop him from gaining The Four Golden Weapons, which would make his power limitless. Travelling across Ninjago, Sensei Wu and his four elementally-attuned students, Kai, Jay, Cole and Zane (Fire, Lightning, Earth and Ice respectively), recover the Golden Weapons, together with trying to find and rescue Kai's sister, Nya. When they recover the Sword of Fire, they are confronted by Garmadon in Shadow-form. Kai rescues Nya and makes peace with the Dragon guardians, but, in order to keep the Sword of Fire from Garmadon, Wu sacrifices himself and travels to the Underworld. The four ninja follow him down on their dragons, who are magical and so can exist in both worlds. After defeating the skeleton army with the ultimate Spinjitzu move, the Tornado of Creation, they come upon Sensei fighting the general of the Skeleton Army, Samukai, who is in possession of three of the Golden Weapons (stolen from the Ninja earlier while they rested in the forests near the Temple of Fire). Wu is defeated and Samukai tries to take the weapons for his own, but their combined power, too much for any normal being to control, destroys him and creates a portal into another realm, allowing Garmadon to escape.
Season 1: Rise of the Snakes
Season 1 focuses on Garmadon's young son Lloyd Garmadon, who has released an ancient evil: an army of five snake tribes known in legends as the Serpentine. The four ninja must stop them from uniting to unleash The Great Devourer, a huge snake and god to the Serpentine, with the power to consume all of Ninjago and a bite that can turn people evil. It is revealed that the Great Devourer's venom transformed Garmadon into what he is now. Also, the Serpentine hold Lloyd as a hostage, and Lord Garmadon and the Skeleton Army has agreed to aid the ninja in rescuing Lloyd and stopping the Serpentine, considering the fact that Garmadon wants himself to be the one to threaten Ninjago and no one else. In the end, the Snake King Pythor, the last of the much-feared tribe known as the Anacondrai, manages to release the Great Devourer in a mad attempt to gain his revenge on the people of Ninjago. He and Wu are eaten by the Devourer, leaving only the Ninja, Nya (who has become a secret fighter known as Samurai X) and Lloyd (revealed to be the Green Ninja, a fighter destined to defeat Garmadon, something which trouble both father and son, as they geniunely love each other) to destroy the Devourer. To everyone's surprise, it is Lord Garmadon who destroys the Devourer, using the combined might of the Four Golden Weapons. After the snake's destruction, Wu is found to have survived and Garmadon vanishes with the weapons. Despite losing the weapons, the Ninja are prepared to train Lloyd of his Spinjitzu skill so that he can face his father one day for the sake of Ninjago, something which he is afraid of.
Season 2: Year of the Pirates
After months of peace, the four Ninja, Sensei Wu and Nya, together with the future Green Ninja Lloyd Garmadon, are called into action against two powerful, magical clans of Pirates; the undead Ocean Plunderers and the half-sea-creature Wave Marauders. But a new threat arises as the mystical Stone Army, accidentally released by the Ninja from their resting place on the island of Insula Lapidem, threatens Ninjago, and old adversaries rise to threaten everything and everyone. As the forces of good and evil prepare for the final battle, Lloyd must unlock his full potential to accept his destiny and battle his father for the fate of Ninjago...[2] This season is set to premiere on July 18 at 8/7c on Cartoon Network
Characters
Main Characters
- Kai (voiced by Vincent Tong) – Kai is the Red Ninja, the Master of Fire. He was a blacksmith and fought like a samurai before Sensei Wu found him. Kai is Nya's brother. Being very impatient and aggressive, Kai was last to unlock his true potential, being held back by his ambition to become the Green Ninja. He is first to discover the identity of the legendary Green Ninja (which triggers his elemental powers), Lloyd, and the last one found by Sensei Wu. When using his true power, he becomes transparent and a red fiery color, though he can still hold objects or people without burning them. He is shown to be able to fly while in his Elemental form.
- Jay (voiced by Michael Adamthwaite) – Jay is the Blue Ninja, the Master of Lighting. He was born in a junkyard to Ed and Edna Walker. He has a crush on Nya (Kai's sister). He unlocked his true potential after Nya kissed him. He is an inventor, not to mention the funniest as he is always cracking jokes. He doesn't take many things seriously, in most episodes. In the final episode, he goes crazy when confronted with the power of the Great Devourer. When using his true power, he becomes a being of pure lightning (becoming transparent and glowing an electric blue), giving him extra strength, together with the abilities to teleport and levitate.
- Zane (voiced by Brent Miller) – Zane is the White Ninja, the Master of Ice. He is the smartest of the ninja. Zane is a "Nindroid" built to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Zane is very calm and quiet and takes things a little too seriously to the point of having little to no humor (unless he turns on his funny switch). He has a connection with the falcon. He can hold his breath for about ten minutes. Meaning his material is water-proof. He was the first one to find his identity and the first to unlock his true potential. When he uses his true power, he becomes like a statue of ice, only he is able to move as in his normal form. His seen powers include freezing his immediate surroundings, moving faster than normal when performing Spinjitzu and unleashing streams of ice, which he uses to freeze the Treehorn Queen after they are attacked by her clan.
- Cole (voiced by Kirby Morrow) – Cole is the Black Ninja, the Master of Earth. Cole is the strong, solid leader of the team. Though enrolled to become a dancer by his father, he was hopeless and ran away from the school, lying to him in his letters, afraid that his father would be crushed by the truth. He was afraid of dragons until he rode the Earth Dragon, bonding with it and naming it 'Rocky'. He is the only dancer to succeed in preforming the 'triple tiger sashay' move since its creation. His relationship with his father is what kept him back. He was third to unlock his true potential. When he uses his true power, he becomes an Earth Elemental, turning a transparent brown color and gaining extraordinary strength and endurance. In the episode 'Home', he is put under hypnosis by Skales and attacks his friends, only being saved by the timely intervention of Sensai Wu with the Sacred Flute.
- Lloyd (voiced by Jillian Michaels) – Lloyd is the son of Dark Lord, Garmadon. He escaped from his boarding school for bad boys (because he was bullied by a kid named Finn), loves candy, and is a high-spirited boy. Lloyd has a large desire for candy and when having the snakes under his control, he steals candy first, or only. He was determined to live up to his father's expectations as a dark lord by releasing the Hypnobrai, Fangpyre, and Anacondrai tribes. He later aids the Ninja in stopping the Serpentine after being betrayed by Pythor. He is also the legendary Green Ninja, who is destined to destroy the dark lord (who is a Lord Garmadon), something which troubles both his father and himself (but Lord Garmadon and Lloyd do not know until the later episodes of the first series) as they genuinely love each other, though Garmadon is still evil in himself.
- Nya (voiced by Kelly Metzger) – Nya is the mysterious Samurai X, and Kai's younger sister. Treated as someone not equal to them by the Ninja and Sensai Wu, she took on the persona of the Samurai to show what she could do and beat them at their own game. Having the exosuit, gadgets, and a shrinkable samurai suit, it makes her an inventor, which is similar to Jay. Her identity as the Samurai was discovered by Kai. Jay has a crush on her, which she seems to know and encourage, since she also has feelings for him, though she can get frustrated by his constant attempts to impress her. She always wants to be like the boys and never wants help during a fight. She also confessed to Jay that she was the Samurai while nearly being skilled on a broken rollercoaster in "Once bitten, twice shy". Now she is known for what she is by all the Ninja and respected more because of it.
- Sensei Wu (voiced by Paul Dobson) – Sensei Wu is the master of the ninja who trains them. He is also the Dark Lord's younger brother, as well as Lloyd's uncle. Wu also hid the Golden Weapons and put the dragons as the guards. He also saved the last Sacred Flute from destruction, allowing him to free Cole from his hypnosis and tell the Ninja its secrets. He loves to drink tea. He has a larger wisdom than Zane and good at hand to hand combat, though he also has a sense of humor (as shown in episode 2 of the pilot).
Villains
- Lord Garmadon (voiced by Mark Oliver) – Lord Garmadon was the former King of the Underworld and the Dark Lord. He used to be the loving brother of Sensei Wu until he was consumed by evil from the great devouerer. He has four arms and wants to possess the 4 Weapons of Spinjitzu to create Ninjago in his own image. The way he got four arms is by absorbing Samukai's power when he went through a portal of darkness. He serves as the main antagonist of the pilot episodes, and later as an anti-hero of Season 1. Despite being the Lord of Darkness, Lord Garmadon genuinely loves his son Lloyd and wants him to find his own destiny, and is somewhat discomforted that Lloyd is destined to be the Green Ninja, knowing that they would have to face each other in the future.
In the finale of Season 1 Lord Garmadon has managed to collect all four Golden Weapons, but only because the Ninja are allowing him to do so to destroy the Great Devourer, the evil creature who is responsible for his transformation into the Lord of Darkness. Following the defeat of the Great Devourer, Lord Garmadon disappears with the Weapons. In Season 2, Garmadon releases the Serpentine and fuses the Four Golden Weapons into a single object with incredible powers.[3]
Skeletons
- Samukai (voiced by Michael Kopsa) – He was the Skeleton General of Fire and the former King of the Underworld and wore the helmet Lord Garmadon wheres. He was usurped by Garmadon following his arrival to the Underworld. He serves as the secondary antagonist of the pilot episodes. In the end of the pilot episodes, he betrays Garmadon by attempting to claim the Golden Weapons for himself to take Garmadon down and reclaim control of the Underworld, but is vaporized into a portal by their power as Garmadon expected, as he doesn't have the necessary strength to control them. He is mentioned only once in Season 1 by Pythor.
- Kruncha (voiced by Brian Drummond) – The Skeleton General of Earth. He starts off as a supporting antagonist in the pilot episodes, and later makes cameo appearances in Season 1. Kruncha wears a helmet similar to Lord Garmadon's but without the bone. He became the new King of the Underworld following Samukai's demise and Lord Garmadon's disappearance.
- Nuckal (voiced by Brian Drummond) – The Skeleton General of Lightning who is constantly fighting with Kruncha. He has a lack of intelligence. He starts off as a supporting antagonist in the pilot episodes, and later makes cameo appearances in Season 1. He has spikes on his head.
- Wyplash (voiced by Michael Dobson) – He is the Skeleton Ice General. He wears a hat like Sensei's.
- Bonezai – The googly-eyed white Skeleton of Ice. Maker of the skeletons' vechicles.
- Krazi (voiced by Trevor Devall) – The Skeleton of Lightning.
- Frakjaw – The never-ending talker. The Skeleton of Fire.
- Chopov – The Skeleton of Earth.
Serpentine
The Serpentine are sorted into the Anacondrai Tribe, the Hypnobrai Tribe, the Fangpyre Tribe, the Constrictai Tribe, and the Venomari Tribe. They were locked underground for many years inside tombs. Pythor claimed they should have been the rulers of the surface of the Earth instead of humans. The tribes were first all against each other until they united under the Snake King (Pythor). Every tribe has a general and every general has a tail, while the lower members have legs. Generals also wield a staff in the shape of a snake and a glowing pearl like object in a color representing the tribe. The object, stamped with the tribal symbol, holds anti-venom for the powers of the Serpentine. If any member of a tribe dares combat their general to become the next general, if the member succeeds, they earn a tail and the pattern of the General on their body, while the original general gets legs and a lower pattern. The Serpentine are listed by their types. There are 5 types
Anacondrai Tribe
The Anacondrai Tribe is the most feared of the Serpentine tribes, though their elemental affiliation remains unknown. The Anacondrai Tribe were sealed away in a desert tomb and regressed to killing each other, leaving only one Anacondrai Tribesman alive. They were locked in a tume with a fang like structure all dusty. They have the ability to swallow anything their size at maximum and become invisible. They have pink eyes. The staff of the Anacondrai has no symbol and the color is purple. The member is:
- Pythor A pun on "python" (voiced by Michael Dobson) - He was the general and last remaining member of the Anacondrai tribe. He serves as the main antagonist of Season 1. He became the first Snake King by defeating the other four generals in combat in the "Ourabouras Arena" for their allegiance and their staffs (though he only did this through cheating by conspiring with Skales and using the stolen Sacred Flute to incapacitate the others). Pythor has the ability to become invisible and to swallows things. He has a form with a tail and a very long neck, and is also far larger than the average Serpentine general. He has yellow traingular shapes on his body with a light blue pearl-like design in the middle and on his head. Pythor has purple arms with black hands (though in set form his hands and arms are black). He originally pretended to be Lloyd's ally, but betrayed him after stealing the map of the Serpentine tombs. He uses the allegiance of the tribes to unleash an evil creature called the Great Devourer to attack the people of Ninjago for locking up his kind underground for so many years. He is presumably killed when he was devoured by the Great Devourer, yet his body was never found after Sensei Wu survived following the Great Devourer's demise at the hands of Lord Garmadon.
Hypnobrai Tribe
A pun on "Hypnotize"The Hypnobrai Tribe are a tribe of cobra-type Serpentines that specialize in mind-control. They were locked in a frozen tomb in a tundra. All of them have red eyes they use to hypnotize victims. The symbol of the staff and the Hypnobrai has a hypnotizing shape like a swirl. Their color is blue and are the Serpentine of Ice. Among its members are:
- Skales A pun on "scales" (voiced by Ian James Corlett) – The General of the Hypnobrai tribe and second in command to Pythor. He serves as the secondary antagonist of Season 1. In the end, he replaces Pythor as the new Snake King. He combated Slithraa (the original general) and succeeded in defeating him, though his mastery of 'Fang-Quan-jo'. He has white, wide PAC-MAN-like shapes on his body. He has two black upside triangle starting from his neck to his chest. On the sides, he has a pattern of gray arrows and a yellow desingn of the Hypnobrai going vertically. He has a blue arms and grey hands. He also has the a yellow hypnobrai sign on both sides of his head.
- Slithraa A pun on "slither" (voiced by John Novak) – He is the original General and keeper of the Hypnobrai Staff. He was accidentally hypnotized after he attacked Lloyd when the boy fell into their tomb. He is defeated by Skales. After that point, he is occasionally seen as a cameo. The designs on his chest are yellow and a gray color surrounds it. He has a gray hypnobrai sign on both sides of his head
- Mezmo A pun on "Memo" (voiced by Michael Adamthwaite, Brent Miller, Ian James Corlett, and Michael Adamthwaite) – He is a soldier of the Hypnobrai tribe. He is mostly seen eating rather than fighting, like eating cotton candy while the others chase Samurai X's Mech which stole the Hypnobrai Fangblade. The designs on him is like Slithraa's except white. And his head is less wide. His hand and arms are gray. He is also the master of the Slither Pit, where he has absolute authority, even over his superiors.
- Rattla (voiced by Paul Dobson) – He is the Scout of the Hypnobrai tribe. He is listed mistakenly as "Loyal Hypnobrai." He is seen once, talking with Skales in the second episode 'Home'. He has a blue head and the top of his head is a darkish white. The designs are like Mezmo's but blue. Those designs are also on the top of the head. And the designs are surrounded by a gray hypnobrai sign on both sides. His arms are a darkish white color and his hands are gray.
Fangpyre Tribe
The Fangpyre Tribe, a pun on 'fang' and vampire, are a tribe of pit viper-type Serpentines where anyone they bite transforms into a Fangpyre. When a vehicle or person is bitten by a Fangpyre, the vehicle developes snake-like traits. Strangly, if a fangpyre bites a vehicle, it transforms instantly, but if they bite a person it takes a long time for them to transform (probably because the person's immune system fights the transformation). The anti-venom is inside the staff. If a Fangpyre bites another Fangpyre, the Fangpyre grows another head, resulting in the slightly comedic quirk that each head speaks halves or thirds of a sentence if it is long enough. The sign of the staff and the fangpyre are fangs with a snake tongue sticking out. They are the sepentine of fire. Among its members are:
- Fangtom (voiced by Mackenzie Gray) – The two-headed General of the Fangpyre tribe and an old friend of Skales. On his body are white rectangular-like designs surrounded by black. He wields the staff. Right after the Great Devouerer was unleashed, Fangtom blamed Skales and they turned into enemies. The reason Fangtom has two heads is because he accidentally bite Himself.
- Fangdam – The two-headed warrior of the Fangpyre tribe. He is exactly alike to Fangtom but he doesn't have a tail.
- Fang-Suei (voiced by Michael Adamthwaite, Ian James Corlett, and Brent Miller) - He is a soldier for the Fangprye tribe and was responsible for Fangdam's two-headed appearance. He has Fangdam's design but red instead of white. Most of his body is white instead of red. He wears a necklace with five fangs on it and has red arms and white hands.
- Snappa A pun on "snap" He is the scout of the Fangpyre tribe. He has a red head with black make-up on his face. On the top of his head is white. He has the same designs as Fang-Suei. He wears a necklace with two fangs on it. Snappa's arms and hands are white.
Constrictai Tribe
The Constrictai Tribe are a tribe of boa constrictor-type Serpentines. They can constrict anyone and can burrow underground at a fast speed. They're also the shortest but strongest of all the tribes. The sign of the staff and the Constrictai is orange and has three rings connectings to each other representing constricting. They were sealed within the Mountain of a Million Steps, until released by Pythor. They are the Serpentine of earth. Among its members are:
- Skalidor (voiced by Michael Dobson) – The General of the Constrictai tribe. Skalidor uses his tail to constrict his victims instead of his hands. He has silver spikes on his head. He has yellow eyes. He is the shortest general but is the big brute. He has an orange rock-like design on his body and a silver stone tied to the right of his chest. Most of his body is black and he has gray arms and black hands.
- Bytar A pun on "Biter" (voiced by Kirby Morrow) - He is the strong (second to Skalidor) Constrictai warrior, seen with others doing Pythor's dirty jobs. Such as digging, ro harming the ninja. He has the same design as Skalidor but doesn't have a silver stone on his chest. He has orange spikes on his head and his left eye is shut all the time. His right eye is yellow. He has gray arms and black hands.
- Chokun A pun on "choke on" (voiced by Kirby Morrow and Vincent Tong) - He is the soldier of the Constrictai Tribe. He has the same head form as Fang Suei. His head his gray and the top of it is silver. Most of his body is orange. He has two gray, cracked stones on his body with white line-like designs surrounding the stones. He has gray arms and blacks hands.
- Snike (voiced by Brent Miller) – He is the scout of the Constrictai tribe. He has a gray head and the top of it is orange with a gray design. He has two black, cracked stones with a smaller one under it. There is also a white line-like design reaching only halfway across the body. He has orange arms with black hands.
Venomari Tribe
A pun on "venom"The Venomari Tribe are a tribe of spitting cobra-type Serpentine that have odd tusks and multiple eyes. They are known to spit hallucination inducing venom. They were sealed in a tomb within poisonous swamps until Pythor released them. The symbol of the staff and the venomari is green with drops of venom coming out. They are the serpentine of Lightnning. Among its members are:
- Acidicus A pun on "acid"(voiced by Paul Dobson) – He is the General of the Venomari tribe, creator of the venom vials his tribe carries in case they run dry during combat. He has six white spikes on his head and two more on the sides of his mouth. It's known that Skalidor and Acidicus resemble Krunsha and Nuckal. It show when they have a fight when Acidicus "accidently" hit Skalidor with his staff. Most of his body is green. Acidicus has green arms with black hands. He has a wide, light green PAC-MAN design with small red trianngle on each side. Then has a black web-like design.
- Lizaru – A pun on "lizard" is the warrior of the Venomari tribe. He has the same kind of head but the six spikes on his head is green. Most of his body is light green. He has two black scars on his body. Lizaru has two vine-like design and two red spots on the sides of his body. He has green arms and black hands.
- Spitta A pun on "spit"(voiced by Kirby Morrow, Michael Adamthwaite and Vincent Tong) - He is the Soldier of the Venomari Tribe. Spitta has no spikes on his head or on the sides of his mout either. He has two black scars on his body and like Lizaru, he has two vine-like designs that hold red bags of venom. He has green arms and black hands. Spitta's fangs are so large and produce so much venom that it leaks, leaking venom is not an honnorable trait even for a Venomari.
- Lasha – He is the scout of the Venomari tribe who is missing one eye probably lost in a fight. Since Lasha ate to much candy when he was little his fangs often hurt and is a little low on the average Venomari venom production he buys venom from his fellow tribe members.
The Great Devourer
The Great Devourer is a giant Serpentine snake worshipped as a god, and is known to be very dangerous and deadly. It's responsible for the events happening in the series, as it transformed the once-loving Garmadon into the hating Lord of Darkness with its venom and it was the same reason Pythor choose to unite the Five Serpentine tribes to attack the people of Ninjago, thus it's the true villain of the pilot episodes and Season One.
