The lead section

The lead section is an essential summary of an article, located above the first heading.

In the source text (the text in the edit window), a heading looks like this:

== This is a heading ==

The lead section is a very important part of every article. The length should correspond to the overall length of the article: an article of 50,000 characters might well have a three paragraph lead, while one of 15,000 or less should limit itself to one or two paragraphs. The text should give a good overview of the article, but it should also get the reader hooked and interested in learning more. Take a look at some featured articles for inspiration.

It is often a good idea to align a representative image with the lead by placing [[File:Filename.jpg|thumb|caption]] just before the first heading. (Filename is the name of the desired file and caption is a description of the image).

Becoming an Administrator

Administrators, commonly known as admins or sysops (system operators), are Wikipedia editors who have been granted the technical ability to perform certain special actions on the English Wikipedia, including the ability to block and unblock user accounts and IP addresses from editing, edit fully protected pages, protect and unprotect pages from editing, delete and undelete pages, rename pages without restriction, and use certain other tools.

They are never required to use their tools, and must never use them to gain an advantage in a dispute in which they are involved.

Admins are selected by the Wikipedia community at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship through an often grueling review process. Go there if you would like to nominate someone to be an admin (including yourself).

RfC

If you really believe there is a consensus about including this BLP-related defamatory information, please ask for official closure of RfC discussion at Wikipedia:AN#Requests_for_closure. I did not do it only because I am sure there is no consensus based on the "head count" (3:2 excluding you as someone who originally placed this information and started RfC) and the sake of the argument. And that was your response? My very best wishes (talk) 23:32, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Here is an interesting essay... My very best wishes (talk) 03:12, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Tongue in cheek, but clever. I hope you are not saying that this is somehow relevant to our current discussion.
I read your announcement, I hope you have a good trip. Andrewaskew (talk) 04:00, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I do not mind informal discussion. I insist on exclusion of this material from this article because I read books by these historians, I found their work great, and I do believe the scandal should not be mentioned anywhere, unless this is absolutely necessary for the sake of the article (and ultimately the encyclopedia), but it is not. What I have here is a genuine BLP concern. But what is your motivation? I found it hard to believe that you struggle for the sake of encyclopedia because this particular example is not essential for this article, and arguably does not belong there at all (depending on definition of sockpuppetry). Just to win a content dispute? My very best wishes (talk) 14:30, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I also don't mind a nice informal discussion. I'd much rather settle the matter in a nice civilised way than with an argument, some of the arguments on Wikipedia are truly ridiculous, but c'est la vie.
My motivation is to ensure the best version of the article Sockpuppet. As an editor, I prefer to work on abstract concerns: definitional issues, categorisation, scepticism, and especially humanities & media. I rather not get involved with biographies, simply because BLP issues seem to produce some of the fiercest arguments. (Not that I think BLP is unimportant.) What BLP means outside of biographies is that we cannot report anything that is improperly sourced or irrelevant to the matter at hand.
In this matter, the facts of the Figes case are important to illustrate sockpuppetry. While a raw definition is important, examples are also important to help readers to understand the matter. Furthermore, a list of examples provides a good jumping off point for readers looking to explore the issue further. We cannot, and should not, say anything more that what is said by our sources. We must use the sources for proper constuction of the article. We are not here to praise nor condemn, we let the facts speak for themselves, and leave it up to our readers to decide.
Ultimately, I struggle because I believe in Wikipedia. Just as the vandalism patrol is vital, so to is it vital for the long-term health and reputation of the Wikimedia project that pages not be decided by personal issues and bias. As we move in to a new phase, and a new generation of editors, these things become more and more important.
Happy editing. --Andrewaskew (talk) 03:41, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So, you simply continue to insist that material about the scandal is extremely important to illustrate what sockpuppet is. However, I think it does not belong to the article at all (irrelevant as you said below) because it does not satisfy the most common definition of sockpuppetry. This is our disagreement. Unlike you, I have very low regard to Wikipedia (please see Official Disclaimer) and continue editing here only because I think this is still a useful, although heavily misused resource, and also because of my addiction. Honestly, I talked about Wikipedia with a number of my colleagues, and none of them held high regard for this place, whereas my closest and most important scientific collaborator demanded that I stopped editing here immediately, and for a number of very good reasons. My another colleague suggested to remove links from our new database to wikipedia as "unprofessional", and that is what we did after some discussion. Good luck, My very best wishes (talk) 05:11, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have a very high regard for Wikipedia, not because I think it is flawless, but perhaps because I am an optimist. I think that Wikipedia's (and humankind's) nature is revealed not in its failures, but in its successes. Ultimately Wikipedia can never be perfect, but by our actions we can make it a little better than yesterday. And on, and on. I can understand the position of your colleagues, but Wikipedia and academe serve slightly different purposes, even if both aim at the improvement of knowledge. Wikipedia involves the masses in education, it serves as an entry point to further research, it answers idle speculations. In short, Wikipedia does the job of an encyclopædia.
So I urge you to continue to edit. Keep faith in the project. It is only by the work of great editors that Wikipedia can continue to become what it can be. --Andrewaskew (talk) 06:06, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The argument on chi force and Star Wars

Hello Andrew, my name is Jacob, And i want to be a little brief on some thing's between the two forces.

Now i have had a lot of conversations between chi and other mystical forces and how they are different. And i see you are a believer in Buddhism and the occult, but lets get to the very bottom. Lets start off with Star Wars, i want to bring to your very attention that the forces in Star Wars is based on supernatural events and not the force of nature. I will describe the forces, okay, you notice how "telekinesis" is mostly used in Star Wars, it is used by the top classes of Jedi including Yoda and Darth Vader and Luke Sky Walker, etc. Clearly some of you didn't quite understand what Yoda was saying in reference to Luke Sky Walker. When Yoda was saying to Luke, "Use the force around you Luke". He didn't met the force of nature, he met the force of "matter", i want you to clearly understand this. He met to use the force of matter by the influence of his mind, not nature not life force or Qi. He met "mind over matter of super consciousness". Now as for chi or Qi on the other hand, is unalike mind over matter. Chi is a physical power of inner force or inner strength, not the supernatural or mystical events. This is why some people and even my self get confused and frustrated on mystical forces and powers. I can't seem to understand why, why is that chi come in to place of everything in definition of "energy". I don't understand why, and I've been crying out loud on this subject for a long time. If you have any other opinions or preparations for this. Please start with this one, God bless.

Hello, I am soliciting comments for an RfC that is currently open on the "Glengarry Glen Ross (film)" page. There is disagreement about where the film was set (New York vs. Chicago).

One of the issues is whether it is original research to cite to elements in the film itself (including props, dialogue, and a statement in the end credits that it was "filmed on location in New York City") to establish setting.

Response so far in the RfC has been mixed. Comments welcome! Xanthis (talk) 14:03, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Andrewaskew. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
