    Notation from official government source

    Case in point. The United States Government NTSB or the FAA publish a letter, document, image, etc. on their offical web site or their official alternate sites linked to from their official web sites, such as twitter @NTSB_Newroom, a NTSB Flickr photo album, etc. Are these considered reliable sources? Do we have to wait until some third party (NY Times, etc.) notices and says on their website "Hey the NTSB just did this"? If commenting in a Wikipedia article that the NTSB or FAA published an item and a brief reference to the jist of the content, and same official web site or official alternate site is already linked in the External Links section of the article, what options are there for notation? For example, could I just say "(see NTSB Flickr link below)" or is a footnote stricktly required? QualityMattersJoe (talk) 02:19, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Publications from the NTSB or FAA are primary sources, where as a news organization is a secondary source They're both reliable sources, but Wikipedia prefers to use secondary sources to demonstrate notability. Whether a source is primary or secondary, we would create a footnote when the source supports a specific statement in the Wikipedia article. Happy editing!     @GoingBatty Assuming notability has already been demonstrated, should we still prefer to use the news source? The newspaper generally won't use an exact quote and it won't provide the same context as the government report, so it seems to be more likely to introduce an ambiguity than to clear one up. Ironically, we're not really allowed to make sense out of any ambiguity by reviewing information from additional sources, because that would be WP:Synth. We are required to worship at the altar of WP. This is all doctrine, so use of logic and reason constitutes heresey heresy! Fabrickator (talk) 23:19, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    How to search inside a short description in JWB

    I'm thinking of doing a JWB run to change instances of Nur-Sultan inside short descriptions to Astana, but I have no idea how to search inside shortdescs and I don't know a single bit of regex.     Remove protection from Help:IPA/English

    Hello. Help talk:IPA/English recommended to me to report here because it warned me its namespace (Help talk) was less watched. I would ask if you would remove protection from the Help:IPA/English page.     How to add this image to infobox of Batley Variety Club?

    @Danstarr69: That's not an appropriate image to replace either of the current images in the infobox. It does not illustrate the article's topic, as required by MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE. It would be great, though, in the Batley_Variety_Club#Closure section of the article, which mentions the building's fortunes after the variety club closed.     @Danstarr69: The majority of the article's current content is about the variety club, with other subsequent uses confined to a short section at the end. MOS:LEADIMAGE suggests just one image for the lead to illustrate the article's topic. The place for other images is in the most relevant article section (MOS:IMAGELOC), and your proposed addition should follow this. The image showing the interior of the club should be moved from the infobox to the paragraph which describes the interior, where it is appropriate. Bazza (talk) 11:39, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Where to find the history of Wikipedia

    I'm sorry if this question is a bit off-topic. Wikipedia:History of Wikipedian processes and people, Wikipedia:Historic debates, and stuff like that all only goes to around the early 2010s, then it stopped. The History of Wikipedia page also feels very lacking as well. It just feels that there's something that has erased all of Wikipedia history, like in the Matrix...     Lost article

    I was asked to reveiw a wikipedia article that I had been cited in. Unfortunately the email I was sent went to my old work email address and I can no longer access it.     Do you know the title of the work of yours that had been cited? A search like this one searches all pages on Wikipedia, both those that are part of the encyclopedia itself and all the behind-the-scenes pages such as half-written articles. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:55, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    I just wanted to let you know I found the article. Acutally it was published but a slightly different name (Faciliation Cascade) and I am well cited. Facilitation cascade

    Hello, Lucygwen. I echo Theroadislong in saying that the email you got is highly irregular. "Wikipedia" does not send out such emails (it doesn't exist in that sense). It is possible that a particular Wikipedia editor sent you such a mail, but I cannot imagine why.
    The most likely is that this was sent by a scam-merchant, hoping you would pay them to "improve" your presence in Wikipedia - see WP:SCAM.
    John has shown you how to search for draft articles. It is also possible that the "mention" they were referring to was in a draft article which has since been deleted, or has been edited and no longer mentions you. Sorry I can't be of more help.     Hi, the email took me directly to the wikipedia and the article page and did not ask me for any details or any money. I was in the process of moving jobs so I could not go any further than with my reveiw, and how the cited my and other scientists was fine as far as I could see-so I don't believe it was a spam email but could be.     @Lucygwen.gillis: Your email address is shown in the source so that's how somebody found you but it's odd that they mailed you. It may still have been a scammer trying to get you interested before asking for money to alledgedly do something for you in Wikipedia. If the mail sounded generic then somebody may have written a script to scan Wikipedia sources for email addresses and spam them. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:36, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Experimenting: can I get rid of these category members?

    I am working on a new project and I have Category:Community feature requests index. Unfortunately Wikipedia:Community feature requests/preload and Template:Community feature requests are in the cat and I don't want them to be. Can it be fixed?     Export policy or guidance

    Is there any policy or guidance that tells when user can perform export? Sometime the export can damage entire Wiki pages when export templates and modules, especially from other language wikis. I just would like to hear your opinion. AntanO 09:26, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Referencing errors on Traditionalist conservatism

    Reference help requested. Hi everyone, I am trying to reference a section on Organicism where I state that Edmund Burke believed in organicism. Unfortunately, the website is paywalled, and the other websites have very problematic source formatting (date, title) issues. If anybody can repair the link or find a source that formats nicely, please do.     Blocked IP addresses

    Hi, some of my colleagues need to make changes to some pages for Griffith College and their IP addresses seem to be blocked so they are not allowed to edit the pages. Can I provide a list of IP addresses to be allowed? Thank you GC2024 (talk) 12:58, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    GC2024 If your colleagues have accounts, they should request unblock from their accounts; they should receive instructions on how to do this when they attempt to make an edit(but they may see the unblock appeals guide as well). Whether the IPs can be unblocked will depend on the reason for the block- it is not permitted(for example) to edit via a webhost or VPN.

    Helloa, GC2024. Your choice of words "some of my colleagues need to make changes" suggests that you and they may be holding an erroneous understanding of what Wikipedia is. Please be aware that your college does not own the article about it, and does not decide what should be in it. You and your colleagues as welcome to make edit requests for changes to the article, but it will be indepedent volunteer editors who decide what to do with those requests.     About Company Infobox.

    Can we write company's present legal name in "Formerly" option of Infobox company?

Next time you have a question like this try posting it in the hep section of the site you are having trouble with instead of here where it will just waste time.     I asked this because i have seen some Wikipedia pages of companies, their present name is written in "Formerly" like Wikipedia page- ITC Limited, it's present name is written in "Formerly" as 'ITC Limited' (2001–present). Sayeed2k (talk) 16:14, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Date of birth change

    I am Christopher Britton Actor. The date of birth on my Wiki page is incorrect. All I want to do is change it to the CORRECT date.....December 23, 1948. I am now 75 years old.     Dennis Vine - you asked this back in August 2023 and were advised "As for getting your birthdate corrected, I suggest you post a request to that effect on the article talk page. Be sure to provide a WP:reliable source for your birthdate!" - It appears you did not do that, but the advice remains the same.
    We have no idea who you actually are, but are claiming to be Christopher Britton, whilst using a different user-name. We need a WP:reliable source for the Date of Birth, so it can be verified, both now, and at any time in the future. - Arjayay (talk) 17:55, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    13 years is a remarkable discrepancy: it would mean that instead of being a teenager in his first role in 1979 (which is consistent with other information in the article), Britton was actually 31. We would need to see a convincing published Reliable source to corroborate this claim.

    No they are not deleting it as a joke. You and some of your suspected other accounts are deleting the notice that there is a deletion discussion. This won't change anything.     I know little about French publishing, but the title page seems to indicate "Administration De Librairie", which was associated with the author and bibliophile Paul Lacroix, who was probably the author of the book. writing under the pen name "Le Bibliophile JACOB".     Sure you can! If you're using the source editor, just change |publisher=Unsure to |publisher=Administration De Librairie in the first citation. If you're using the VisualEditor, click footnote 1 and the edit button, then scroll down to the Publisher field and change "Unsure" to "Administration De Librairie", then click "Apply changes" and "Publish changes". I haven't found a "Department of housing and construction" for Sydney, but I have found three for Australia: I'm guessing you are referring to Department of Housing and Construction (1978–1982), but maybe you were looking at
    Each of those has citations to sources, though I confess that the source that is cited for the recreation of the department in 1978 (http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/SearchOld.asp?Number=CA+2747) does not currently seem to be accessible.
    In any case, the place to bring up such a question is on the Talk page of the relevant article. But note that unpublished information, including personal recollection, is not accepted as a source for Wikipedia. You would need to find a published source for the department having existed in 1977.     Hello, BinaryBrainBug! I moved the Nick Khan article you created to the draft space. At the time it was moved, it contained two short sentences and one citation. As such, it was not ready to be in Wikipedia's main space yet because the article didn't indicate whether Khan is notable according to Wikipedia's guidelines. The draft space provides editors somewhere to work on their article and potentially receive feedback from other editors before having it published for the world to see.     BinaryBrainBug, if it is clear that your original work was copied from the draft to the new article, then that is a problem. But sources are not your original work. Any editor is free to write a draft at any time. And any autoconfirmed editor is free to write a new article at any time, if the topic is notable.     Cullen328, I am not here to take credit. However, the fact that I expanded and submitted the draft with reliable sources and then a another user created the article, knowing about the draft in queue is concerning, makes the whole system of draft review pointless.
    About the copying, it's not about original work, but comparing the sources cited and archived, it seems that the user was at least aware of my draft. Again, I am not claiming ownership, I have problem with the review system and the user creating the article despite draft already existing without communicating with me doesn't seem respectful or good faith.     @Bazza 7:I am intending to use the tables for presenting tabulated data but to ask the question I presented just sufficient to ask the question. I was being concise.
    I have information which will be best understood when presented in rows and columns and so a table is the most appropriate presentation style.
    If the implementation of Tables is not going to work as I would like, then I will certainly consider other possibilities. Rather than create a large table and then find that it will not present the information clearly, I have asked for help. I try to consider the presentation of the data together with the gathering of the data. To use other than a Table for the data that I am gathering is not a 'best fit'.
    Your recent arrangement of information into a table on Miner's inch in my opinion is an improvement. Your decision to use the flexibility of the Table arrangement seems well considered. Surely you are using formatting to display the data.
    Why then do you tell me that using a Table for formatting is a purpose other than that permitted.

    @BlueWren0123: I'm assuming that you are referring to User:BlueWren0123/Basic? If you are not, then ignore the rest of this comment; if you are, it would have been helpful to say so from the start.
    To answer your specific question: you can remove the two side borders of the blank row's single cell by adding style="border: none;" to its properties.
    Your table, though, has two errors in it:
    1. The completely blank row consisting of a single cell has no data in it. Its sole purpose is to act separate the rows above and below it, meaning it's being used for formatting the display of the table. It should not be present in the table.
    2. It is not clear what the bottom row is as it is structurally covered by all three column headers. Because of this, it does not meet WP:ACCESSIBILITY. Its contents ought to be outside the table.

    Thx. I think I'll only do 1 edit a day in future. I'd added 3 lines, on diff aspects of Standup and all were removed - so I'm clueless as to whether it was 1 or all that @Seasides53 objected to.
    I did think for a second it was an IT issue as I'd had an "exceeded rate limit" message and then found i was logged out (even though I'd checked to remain in for 1 year). I ended up logging back in 3 times (?) so something wasn't happy on the site (unless I happened to hit the page the second that it was being "reverted"). I have VPN software but it was disconnected at the time as I know many sites don't like it.

    I use Fandom to track supercentenarians. Fandom referred me to Wikipedia as the source. My question: The list of names for 2024 does not contain a (chronological number) as it has in past years. For example, compare https://gerontology.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_supercentenarians_who_died_in_2023 and https://gerontology.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_supercentenarians_who_died_in_2024

I suspect you mean superscript numbers in square brackets like [2] after the names in wikia:gerontology:List of supercentenarians who died in 2023#List. They are not intended to number the rows. They are numbered references where [2] means the second numbered reference on the whole page and so on. A table row might have 0, 1 or more references. If you click the number then you jump to the reference text at the end. Nobody has added references to wikia:gerontology:List of supercentenarians who died in 2024 so there are no such numbers there.     Hello, MavrikiM. In general, the answer is that you can move the draft to main article space. But in your case this does not apply, for two reasons:
    1. Your account on English Wikipedia is too newhas not made enough edits for you to have that function available
    2. Judging by your user name, you have a conflict of interest, so you should not move the article to mainspace yourself, but should submit it for review. I have added a header to User:MavrikiM/Kostas Mavrikis to allow you to do so when you are confident that it meets English Wikipedia's requirements for referencing and notability (which may be stricter than Greek Wikipedia's) ColinFine (talk) 16:50, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    The main image of Electronic literature is a photo of a floppy disk with a label on it - the disk contains a classic work of electronic literature, a hypertext fiction by Shelley Jackson. The article is currently undergoing a GA review and the reviewer raised the question of whether the label might be copyrighted, regardless of the photographers of the diskette having specified that it is CC-by-SA. Are there any copyright specialists who know whether that would be the case?
