The Amazing Race 10 was the tenth installment of the popular reality television show, The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 10 features twelve teams of two with a pre-existing relationship in a race around the world. Applications were accepted through January 20, 2006 (one week later than the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews occurred in late February/early March, followed by finalist interviews in Los Angeles during late March and early April. Filming ran from May 27, 2006 to June 24, 2006. This installment ran from September 17, 2006 to December 10, 2006.

Two new rules were made for this installment of the race.

  • Intersection Intersection - This was a new element in the game that two teams were required to work together in a task until otherwise instructed. If no other team was available when one team read the Intersection clue, they were required to wait for another team to show up before proceeding. The Intersection was also in conjunction with a Fast Forward, with the first team pairing to win to earn the Fast Forward for both teams.
  • Marked for Elimination - Instead of the previous money and baggage penalties for coming in last place, the last place team in a non-elimination leg became Marked for Elimination meaning that unless they place first in the following leg, they receive a 30 minute penalty at the mat, possibly allowing teams finishing behind them to overtake them in the final placings for that leg.
  • In this season, every leg had a Roadblock (the double-length leg had two) so an individual could do up to 7 Roadblocks.

Template:FnbLeg 1 was a double-elimination leg. Bilal & Sa'eed were eliminated first halfway through the leg (see below note), while Vipul & Arti were eliminated at the Pit Stop.
Template:FnbBilal & Sa'eed were the last team to arrive at the Meridian Gate in the Forbidden City, where teams got start times for the next morning. There were only 11 teams; they were eliminated in the middle of the leg.
Template:FnbKellie took, but failed to complete, the Roadblock in Leg 2. Already in last, Kellie & Jamie then checked into the Pit Stop and were eliminated.
Template:FnbTom & Terry arrived 2, but were assessed a 30 minute time penalty for traveling on motorbikes, which were prohibited to the racers for safety reasons.
Template:FnbThe Roadblock count does not include the results of any unaired Roadblocks.
Template:FnbDue to an Intersection, two teams worked together to complete the Fast Forward and both were able to skip all remaining tasks and head to the Pit Stop.
Template:FnbDavid & Mary arrived 5, but were assessed a 30 minute penalty as they were "marked for elimination" and did not arrive at the Pit Stop in 1. They were not, however, assessed the whole penalty as Lyn & Karlyn checked in 10 minutes after the penalty started.
Template:FnbLeg 9 was double-length, with two detours and two roadblocks, shown over two episodes.
Template:FnbRed means the team was eliminated.
Template:FnbBlue N means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race and was thus "marked for elimination," meaning that if that team did not place first on the next leg, they would receive a 30 minute penalty.
Template:FnbGreen F means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
Template:FnbMatching magenta letters (A, B, and C) indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of the Intersection clue.
Template:FnbA Yellow > means a team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who they Yielded; Y indicates a leg where the Yield was available but not used.

Notable race events

General

  • This is the first season to (nearly) circumnavigate the globe in a generally westwardly fashion, crossing the Pacific Ocean in the first leg and crossing the Atlantic on the final leg. Most other seasons (with the exception of Season 7 and Season 8) tranversed the globe in a generally eastwardly direction; the first legs of these races had teams crossing the Atlantic Ocean or staying on the North America/South America landmass, and then crossing the Pacific on the final legs.
  • Sarah reported in a post-race interview on The Finish Line that because of the Roadblock in the first leg a single team member could do a maximum of 7 Roadblocks instead of the usual 6 (as has been in place from Season 6). This rule was never mentioned on the show, although Karlyn performed 7 aired Roadblocks.
  • A Fast Forward was offered in conjunction with the Intersection in Leg 8. Mary reported in a post-race interview on The Finish Line that a team could use a Fast Forward for a second time (in this case with a team that had not used a Fast Forward earlier in the race). In previous seasons, teams were allowed to use only one Fast Forward during the entire race. Her reports were proven to be true in The Amazing Race 11, where one team (Oswald and Danny) was able to use both the Fast Forward while being intersected with another team and another individual Fast Forward on the race.

Pre-Race

In-Race

  • During the first leg there were 2 eliminations, Bilal and Sa'eed were eliminated when they arrived last at a checkpoint in the middle of the leg, the first and so far only time a team has ever been eliminated before a leg's official pit-stop end location.
  • In Leg 3 and Leg 4 (Vietnam), all route markers were white and yellow instead of red and yellow. This was done because the flag of the vanquished South Vietnam also consisted of red and yellow stripes. This is similar to Season 3's Leg 11 in which the teams traveled through Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, however, the route markers were made solid yellow in that season. Additionally, teams were not allowed to ride on motorbikes for safety reasons. At the beginning of Leg 3, teams were not given any money and were not permitted either to beg for money or to sell items. Instead, they had to earn money in the Roadblock. At the beginning of Leg 4, teams received 588,000₫ (dong VND - approximately USD $37) at the start of the leg. This was the first time in race history the cash distribution was made in a currency in other than US dollars.
  • A Yield was available in one of the Vietnam legs, either Leg 3 or Leg 4, but was not used or aired, according to Mary on The Finish Line. [1] David & Mary were apparently the first team on the Yield mat, so it is speculated that the Yield could have been before the Roadblock in Leg 4.
  • During Leg 6, Peter and Sarah's car had a handicap sticker from the state of California.
  • Peter and Sarah did not arrive at Leg 6's Pit Stop until after David and Mary departed at the beginning of Leg 7.[2]
  • While no Roadblock was shown for Leg 7, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Dustin and Kandice's hands in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website. [3]
  • Leg 8 is the first introduction of Intersection.
  • The prize for Leg 10 was given to the team that selected the "good luck charm" earlier in the leg that happened to match the one worn by the greeter at the pit stop. Unlike most former luck prizes, however, this one was awarded to the winners of the leg.

Post-Race

  • David and Mary appeared on The View. David revealed that he had originally auditioned for Survivor. The couple also received gifts from the show, including vacations, a Ford Explorer, and a new house.[4]
  • Just prior to returning to New York City for the post-race interview circuit, Lyn's house was ransacked.[5]
  • David & Mary and Dustin & Kandice were selected to race in The Amazing Race All-Stars.
    • Notably, Dustin and Kandice did not make the usual interview tours after their elimination in this race for the first time, as they were still racing in All-Stars when the episode in which they were eliminated aired.
  • Dustin married her college sweetheart prior to the start of All-Stars. In the pre-race interviews for All-Stars, Dustin states that Kandice was a bridesmaid at her wedding, which she might not have been had they not run the Season 10 Race together.
  • Dustin & Kandice received a letter from Lyn during All-Stars as part of a Roadblock task. A video of Karlyn yelling at Dustin & Kandice at an airport ticket counter during Season 10 was shown in the episode.
  • Peter Harsch (of Peter & Sarah) now works as a prosthetist at Navy Medical Center San Diego.[6]
  • Episode 4 which contained Leg 4 was selected by CBS for The Amazing Race nomination in the 2007 Emmy Awards.[7], , and subsequently garnered 5 total nominations, including one for the Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. The episode won the latter award, winning for the show its 5th Outstanding Reality-Competition Award in a row.
  • Jamie Hill (of Kellie & Jamie) was crowned Miss South Carolina 2008, and will compete in the Miss USA Pageant in Las Vegas on April 11.[8]

Prizes

Unless otherwise noted, prizes were awarded to the first team to check in for each leg.

  • Leg 1 - $20,000.
  • Leg 2 - A trip to Mexico, including swimming with dolphins and traveling in the forest on an ATV from Travelocity.
  • Leg 3 - A state of the art home theater system.
  • Leg 4 - A jet-ski for each team member.
  • Leg 5 - A home gym center for each team member.
  • Leg 6 - A trip to a resort in Jamaica.
  • Leg 7 - A motor-scooter for each team member.
  • Leg 8 - A trip to the Kona coast on Hawaii's Big Island, including a helicopter tour.
  • Leg 9 - A trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, including swimming with dolphins and cruising through the jungle canopy.
  • Leg 10 - A Sprint phone with a year's subscription for each team member. During the leg, teams were instructed to pick up a good luck charm from Antiquitte du Sud which they could exchange for some "good fortune" at the Pit Stop. The team with the charm that matched the one carried by the Berber greeter won this prize (though it so happened that the first team to arrive had the matching charm).
  • Leg 11 - A trip to Barbados, including swimming with turtles and a spa package from Travelocity.
  • Leg 12 - $1,000,000

Leg 1 (United States → People's Republic of China)

The first Roadblock of The Amazing Race 10 was to eat fish eyes out of a bowl of fish head soup. The Detour was Labor or Leisure. In Labor, teams had to travel one mile (1.6 km) by pedicab and pave a 45-square-foot (4 m2) section of sidewalk in a specific pattern. In Leisure, teams had to perform a Chinese relaxation method known as Taiji Bailong, which involves balancing a ball on a paddle.

Additional Task

  • Before entering to Great Wall, Teams had to scale the Great Wall of China and climb to the pit stop.

Leg 2 (People's Republic of China → Mongolia)

The Detour for this leg was Take It Down or Fill It Up. In Take It Down, teams had to take down the cover of a yurt, roll it up, and attach it to a camel. In Fill it Up, teams had to put four water containers on a cart pulled by a hynik, an ox-like animal indigenous to the area. Then they had to fill them up at a stream, bring them back by their hynik, and fill a barrel to the designated line. The Roadblock was to shoot a flaming arrow and hit a target 160 feet (49 m) away.

Additional Task

  • Upon the arriving on National Park, Teams had to put on traditional Mongolian army hats and ride two and a half miles on a horse.

Leg 3 (Mongolia → Vietnam)

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to sell flowers on Vietnamese bicycles - enough to make at least 80,000₫ (dong VND - approximately USD $5). Teams were allowed to keep the money they made. In the Detour, teams chose between Fuel and Fowl. In Fuel, teams had to form wet coal into round bricks, a traditional Vietnamese fuel source. In Fowl, teams had to construct an intricate traditional Vietnamese birdcage.

Additional Task

  • Upon the opening of Hanoi Hilton, teams must search Hanoi Hilton for their next clue.

Leg 4 (Vietnam)

  • Hanoi (Ly Thai To Garden)
  • Ha Long, Quang Ninh Province (Ben Xe Bai Chay, Hydrofoil Harbor) Yield: not used Yielded {{{3}}} (Unused; Unaired)
  • Ha Long (Halong Bay – Hon Yen Ngua Island) Roadblock: ""Who's got strong arms and legs?""
  • Ha Long (Halong Bay – Sung Sot Cave) Detour: Over or Under
  • Ha Long (Halong Bay – Soi Sim Island) Pit Stop: Leg 4

At the Hydrofoil Harbor was the first Yield of the Race. This leg's Roadblock was to use an ascender to climb a large rock face, receive the clue and then rappel down. The Detour was Over or Under. Teams were taken to the water by a junk, then given a sampan to row. In Over, teams had to row to a provisions ship, load the provisions, then row to a floating village to make two deliveries. In Under, teams had to row to an oyster farm and grab 30 baskets from the water.

Leg 5 (Vietnam → India)

The Detour in this leg was Wild Things or Wild Rice. In Wild Things, teams had to go to the Madras Crocodile Bank and help the workers wrangle a marsh crocodile to move it to a new pit. In Wild Rice, teams had to use colored powder made from rice to color an intricate floral design. For the Roadblock, one team member had to take a driving test that would allow them to obtain an Indian driver's license.

Leg 6 (India → Kuwait)

The first of only two Fast Forwards on the Race was to get the Fast Forward clue from a cluebox right next to a simulated oil fire, braving temperatures of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The Roadblock on this leg was to climb a ladder to the top of one of the Kuwait Towers and get a satchel filled with puzzle pieces. They then had to go to the ground and assemble the puzzle to reveal their next destination. The Detour on this leg was Manual or Automatic. In Manual, teams had to fill ten 110 lb bags of camel feed and stack them up. In Automatic, teams went to the Kuwait Camel Racing Club and had to use a walkie-talkie to make a voice activated robotic jockey whip a camel. They had to make the camel run a 140-yard (130 m) course.

Leg 7 (Kuwait → Mauritius)

In this leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Salt or Sea. In Salt, teams had to search through three giant piles of salt for a salt shaker containing their next clue. In Sea, teams had to travel by motorboat to an island two and a half miles away and search the island using a map to find the boat's sail. After finding it, they had to attach it to the boat and sail back. While no Roadblock was shown for this leg of the race, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Dustin and Kandice's hands in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website. [3] [9]

Additional Task

  • At the arriving on harbor beside the sea, Teams had to swim to the boat, which was anchored in Grand Baie.

Leg 8 (Mauritius → Madagascar)

At the Intersection, teams had to join with one other team to complete tasks and make decisions together until further notice, including completing the Fast Forward. The second Fast Forward on the Race was to go to a market and eat one full serving of cow lips, a local delicacy. The Detour on this leg of the Race was Long Sleep or Short Letter. In Long Sleep, teams had to deliver 8 covered mattresses through the streets of Antananarivo to a certain address. In Short Letter, teams had to work together to successfully make 28 pieces of paper. After the Detour, teams were not required to work together anymore. The Roadblock on this leg was to go to stairs filled with rubber stamp vendors and find four stamps that matched ones on their clues. Once finished, they would proceed to the Pit Stop, where their teammate was waiting.

Leg 9 (Madagascar → Finland → Ukraine)

In the first Detour, teams had to decide between Swamp This or Swamp That. Both options are methods by which Finnish athletes keep themselves in shape during the warmer months. Swamp This was cross country skiing through bog, and Swamp That was an obstacle course through bog. The Roadblock for this half of the leg was to search the mine for a marked dig site and get a piece of limestone. They then had to use tools to break it open to get their next clue, which was inside of it. As an additional task, each team member had to rappel face-first down from the top of the tower of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

On the second half of the leg, the Roadblock consisted of taking a Russian T-64 Tank through a training course. The second Detour was a choice between Make the Music or Find the Music. In Make the Music, teams went to Dance and Groove, a dance club in Kiev and had to perform a rap incorporating the names of all of the nations visited so far on the Race. In Find the Music, the teams had to go to the Ukrainian National Music Academy and find a copy of the sheet music of Tchaikovsky's Concert Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra, and then find a pianist to perform the piece for them.

Additional Tasks

  • At the Kappeli Cafe, teams had to log onto their e-mail to get an e-mail clue from their families.
  • At the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, teams had to do a face first rappel known as an Angel Dive down the Helsinki Olympic Tower.

Leg 10 (Ukraine → Morocco)

At the film studios was the only aired Yield of the Race. The Roadblock on this leg was to act like ancient gladiators by racing horse chariots. While racing, they would have to pull down two flags that match the color on their horse. This leg's Detour was Throw It or Grind It. In Throw It, teams had to use a pottery wheel to make two pots. In Grind It, teams had to use a large crushing wheel to grind olives, then pack them into bags. Each Detour selection only had three workstations, which were first come-first serve. After completing the Detour, teams drove on the road to Marrakech until they reached a marker, where they turned off into the desert to the camp that served as the Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (Morocco → Spain)

This leg's Roadblock was to prepare and eat camel meat cooked by Mohammed, a chef. The participating team member had to purchase a half kilogram of camel meat, grind it, prepare it on skewers using a traditional Moroccan recipe, have a chef cook it and then eat it. The Detour for this leg was Lug It or Lob It. In Lug It, teams had to get into giant costumes known as "gigantes y cabezudos" and walk a distance of over a mile in them to find a female giant. In Lob It, teams had to search a giant pile of tomatoes and find one with a clue inside. While they were searching, locals threw tomatoes at them as done in the Spanish festival called La Tomatina.

Leg 12 (Spain → France → United States)

In the final Roadblock of the race, one team member had to perform a tandem skydive onto Omaha Beach. The other team member remaining in the plane would be treated to a surprise nosedive. Once finished, the person who did the Roadblock was taken to a train station in a military jeep, while the other team member had to take a taxi. In the last Detour of the race, teams had to choose between Art and Fashion. In Art, they had to go to an art studio, pick up a painting, and then search at the nearby square for a painter who would give them their next clue. In Fashion, teams had to go to Anatomy Fashion Studio and make a jacket to fit on a mannequin using the tools provided. Once satisfied, a lady would give them their next clue.

When flying to Paris, Rob & Kimberly and Tyler & James chose to fly to Charles de Gaulle International Airport, while Lyn & Karlyn chose to fly to Orly Airport. When flying to New York, while the other two teams managed to take the earlier flight to John F. Kennedy International Airport, Lyn & Karlyn took the remaining flight to Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey. Since the time difference between the two flights was too great, footage of Lyn & Karlyn completing tasks in New York City was not aired.
