2008 Texas Republican presidential primary
The 2008 Texas Republican primary took place on March 4, 2008.
Process
The Republican primary process allocates delegates solely through the primary process. 96 delegates are selected by congressional district, with three delegates per district. In addition to candidates, "uncommitted" is also an option on the ballot. The delegate split is modified proportional. If a candidate receives a majority of the vote, he receives all delegates in a district. If two candidates receive between 20 and 50% of the vote, the first place candidate receives two delegates and the second place candidate receives one delegate. If no candidate receives 20% of the vote, the top three candidates each receive a delegate.
The 41 at-large delegates are selected based on the statewide vote. If a candidate receives a majority, they will receive all 41 delegates. Otherwise, the split is proportional to the statewide vote, with a minimum 20% threshold.
In addition, there are three "party leader" delegates who are officially uncommitted.
The actual delegates are selected at precinct conventions on the date of the primary. Unlike the process in the Texas Democratic Party, these conventions only select the persons who will go to the state and subsequently the national convention, as all delegates are bound by the popular vote.[1]
