Dollar Menu McChicken sold in US

The McChicken is a chicken sandwich sold by the international fast food chain McDonald's in many countries.

Product description

The sandwich consists of a breaded chicken breast meat patty, lettuce, and mayonnaise.[1]

Variants

In certain McDonald's franchises, the McChicken sandwich was adapted to appeal to the local population's tastes. For example, in Hawaii, the Ala Moana Shopping Center McDonald's created the McTeriChicken sandwich. "Teri," otherwise known as teriyaki sauce, is heavily used in Hawaii and has been applied in various McDonald's sandwiches (such as the McTeri Burger). In some countries such as India, the McChicken is a chicken burger on a sesame seed bun and it does not have a spicy taste. McDonald's restaurants in Singapore serve a McChicken with a spicy taste. The sandwich was for a time known as the "Cajun McChicken" sandwich, but the name was changed to just "McChicken" around 2000,and a milder, softer chicken patty was used. McDonald's restaurants in Arizona, Denver, Colorado, Corpus Christi, and College Station, Texas sell the Hot & Spicy McChicken.

McDonald's restaurants in Taiwan feature Spicy McChicken sandwiches, a hot and spicy variant of the original. This is available on both the traditional bun, as well as a formed rice bun.

In Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the McChicken comes on a sesame seed bun with lettuce and "McChicken Sauce" and is slightly spiced. Originally the McChicken appeared in Australia as a "promotional" menu item but due to its popularity in this market it became a full time menu item.

History

The sandwich was originally introduced in 1980; it proved to be a sales disappointment and was later replaced with the highly successful Chicken McNuggets. Following the success of McNuggets, the McChicken was reintroduced. The current McChicken sandwich recipe is somewhat spicier than the original. Additionally, in United States, the sandwich is somewhat smaller than it was previously, as it is now on the Dollar Menu, which offers various food products for the price of US$1.00. In Canada, with McChicken still its original size, the one on the dollar menu is called "Junior Chicken".

The shaped chicken patty in the McChicken sandwich used to be 50% white meat and 50% dark meat. Beginning in late 2007 McDonald's started advertising that the McChicken contains only 100% white meat.
