This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Chasing wisdom (talk | contribs) at 12:14, 22 September 2010 (→‎Directors filming in several languages). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

India has many regional film centres: Bollywood, the largest, in Mumbai, producing films in the Hindi language; Bangalore, for films in Kannada; Kolkata, for films in Bengali; Chennai, for films in Tamil: Hyderabad, for films in Telugu etc. Most Indian film directors are known for their work with one regional industry. Star directors can get funding to film in any language. Hence directors may be listed more than once.

Directors of parallel or independent cinema

Parallel Cinema is otherwise known as "Art films" cinema, and is known for its serious and realistic films with real-life situations. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Indian government financed a number of such films, on Indian themes. Many of the directors were graduates of the FTII (Film and Television Institute of India), in Pune. Ritwik Ghatak was a professor at the institute and a well-known director in his own right. The best-known Indian "neo-realist" is Satyajit Ray.
