"Give Me All Your Luvin'" is a song by American singer Madonna featuring guest vocals from Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. It was released to radio and as digital download on February 3, 2012, as the lead single of her forthcoming album MDNA. The song is the debut release from her Live Nation contract and will be distributed in partnership with Interscope Records, under a new three-album deal. A demo version of the song was leaked on November 8, 2011, under the name "Give Me All Your Love". An accompanying music video was filmed in December 2011, directed by MegaForce.

Background

In December 2010 Madonna posted a message on her Facebook exclaiming: "Its official! I need to move. I need to sweat. I need to make new music! Music I can dance to. I'm on the lookout for the maddest, sickest, most badass people to collaborate with. I'm just saying".[2] Madonna has stated she wanted to work with M.I.A. and Minaj on the track as they were both strong, independent girls with a unique voice, and that she liked their music and what they represented.[3] She paid tribute to the stars, saying "They're not conventional pop stars and I really admire them both. I love both of them actually.[4] M.I.A. felt that the collaboration was an achievement her mother would be proud of, "way [more] than me putting "Galang" out in a club."[5][6]

Release

On November 8, 2011, two snippets of the demo leaked on the web.[7] Later that day, the entire demo of the song, as "Give Me All Your Love," was leaked onto the Internet.[8] According to Billboard: "Within a few hours, it was among one of the top 10 trending topics worldwide on Twitter."[8] After the release of the demo, Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, wrote on Twitter, "The plan was for new music to come out in the new year. I'm very happy with the positive reaction to the demo, but we are very upset with whoever leaked the song!!!!!!!! we are asking that the fans please help us police any more leaks. we have a lot in store for you. but please respect the process."[9][10] The leaked demo lacked vocals from both Minaj and M.I.A..[10][11][12][13][3] M.I.A. confirmed the collaboration of all three in a tweet saying she had been summoned to New York City on November 29, 2011.[14]

On December 22, 2011, the police arrested a 31-year-old man from Spain who reportedly leaked the demo. They confirmed the suspect's initials as J.M.R. and described him as "a big Madonna fan"; they found recordings of the song in his belongings.[15][16][17][18] It was confirmed by The Huffington Post that the person didn't seek to profit from the release. He was charged with leaking the unpublished song and later was subsequently released.[19]

On January 29, 2012, Interscope Records announced that the song will be titled "Give Me All Your Luvin'" and that it would be released on February 3, 2012.[20] The song was written by Madonna, Martin Solveig, Minaj, and M.I.A; composed by Solveig and Michael Tordjman and produced by Madonna and Solveig.[20] The track will be her debut single from her 360 deal with Live Nation Entertainment which was signed in 2007. Through this contract, Madonna and Live Nation signed a three-album deal with Interscope Records, who will market and distribute the single and the studio album.[21] "Give Me All Your Luvin'" will be sent for adding to United States Mainstream radio on February 7, 2012.[22]

Composition

The song starts with a cheer: "L-U-V MADONNA Y-O-U YOU WANNA",[9] after which a "polished 60s shakedown" follows.[23] Priya Elan of NME said that the demo resembles Madonna's own songs "Beautiful Stranger", "Amazing" and the songs on her albums Ray of Light (1998) and Hard Candy (2008).[23] In the chorus, Madonna sings the lines "Give me all your love/ Let's forget about time and dance the night away", which led to criticism because according to Priya Elan they are "neither befitting of the grande dame of disco nor are indicative of the type of lyrics she should be penning at this stage in her career."[23] Entertainment Weekly's Lanford Beard commented that the demo, "blends Katy Perry-meets-Gwen Stefani chanting, echoes of Ashlee Simpson's regrettable foray into New Wave-y synth-guitar sounds, and a 'Hold It Against Me' redux breakdown."[24] John Mitchell of MTV Newsroom commented that the instrumentation of the song consists of "glittery synths, marching band drums, claps and a catchy-as-hell chorus."[9] Lewis Corner of Digital Spy called the song an "'80s-inspired electro-thumper complete with a cheerleader chant of 'L-U-V Madonna!'"[25] After the second chorus, Nicki Minaj raps her verse as her alter-ego Roman Zolanski, "I'm Roman" | "I'm a barbarian" | "I'm Conan", after which M.I.A "slows down the pace and rap-sings in her signature voice"[26] during a dubstep-influenced bridge.

Critical reception

"Give Me All Your Luvin'" received mixed reviews from music critics. Jim Farber from the New York Daily News considered that the song is "a pure snap of bubble gum, closer to an early single like 'Burning Up' than any of her more recent club hits. Only the rap cameos from the quite camp Nicki Minaj, and the less so M.I.A., tell us what decade we're in."[27] Michael Cragg from The Guardian wrote that: "it's not bad. Musically it's a pretty joyful four minutes, featuring bouncing beats, acoustic riffs and Gwen Stefani-style cheerleader chants, but there's something a bit flat about Madonna's delivery. Given all the love she's demanding, you'd think she'd be more excited." Speaking of the rap part, he thought that "Minaj certainly does her best, her typically frantic rap an exercise in squeezing as many words into a 10-second space as possible, while MIA's more laconic drawl loses momentum."[28] Andrew Hampp from Billboard, gave the song a mixed review, stating "It amounts to a subpar effort from all parties, particularly Madonna, who hasn't sounded this robotic since the more tweaked-out moments on her last album, "Hard Candy.""[29] Sal Cinquemani from Slant gave a mixed review as well, describing the song as "decidedly vapid" and "catchy" but also stated that "its few charms—'60s surf-pop guitar, vintage video-game effects, and references to her past songs—are fleeting at best." He also described appearances by Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. as "tacked on for added marketability"[30] PopCrush editor Cristin Maher was more positive about the song, highlighting its "infectious quality that really sticks in your head" and described it as "effervescent, dance-and-clap-inducing track".[31] Chris Willman of Reuters was also positive about the song, calling it "risible" and infectious: "Everything here is as dumb as the titular spelling, but the campiness has its charm, at least if you like the old musicals that some of the tracking shots here are paying homage to".[32]Jody Rosen of Rolling Stone gave it a negative review, describing lyrics and composition as "dashed off", and was also displeased by its "aggressive, assaultive spunkiness".[33]

Minaj tweeted on December 8, 2011 that she was on set with Madonna filming the video for "Give Me All Your Luvin".[35][36] Directed by the team MegaForce (Léo Berne, Charles Brisgand, Raphaël Rodriguez, and Clément Gallet), the video has football and cheerleader theme, inspired by her upcoming halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVI. Madonna previewed the video in an American Idol exclusive on February 2, 2012. The full video for "Give Me All Your Luvin'" premiered on Madonna's YouTube channel on February 3, 2012.[20]

Rolling Stone gave a mixed review for the video saying that "It's a goofy and fun clip, though the faceless cheerleaders in the background are more creepy than amusing."[37]

Live performance

Confirming her performance of the song alongside Madonna and Minaj at the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show on February 5, 2012, from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, M.I.A. told BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe of her reasons to collaborate with Madonna, noting she viewed her as an original artist. She continued "As musicians, we're two women and we represent two opposite sides of the world. If we can come together on a piece of music or something like the Super Bowl, I feel like that’s actually a cool thing to see."[38] She performed the song, along with her other songs including "Vogue", "Music" with LMFAO[39] and then she performed "Open Your Heart" and "Like a Prayer" along with Cee Lo Green.[40][41]
