reporting disruptive editing

I posted a complaint about disruptive editing on 03/29/2012. The person I complained about and another person who had had a similar experience with the problem editor responded. THEN THE WHOLE SECTION DISAPPEARED...and the problem individual is back to arbitrarily deleting my stuff again (as in WP:IDONTLIKEIT. What happened, how do I report it, and how to I undo it?Smm201`0 (talk) 01:01, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's scrunched in Safari, and so is the Adrienne Rich poem excerpt at the bottom of the page. ("Scrunched" being a technical term involving the vertical axis: i.e., the font size or x-height is too large relative to the leading or line height.) Evidently we've proved beyond reasonable doubt that we've broken the internet, or at least the bit that we were trying to use - but a Wizard is still required if we are to mend it. Verification of reliability

The article on Jayne Mansfield has the following content.

In May 10, 1950, a pregnant 17-year old Jayne married 22-year old Paul Mansfield at Fort Worth, Texas.[1][2][3][4][5] One biographer, Raymond Strait, wrote that she married Paul publicly in May 6, had an earlier "secret" marriage in January 28, and her first child was conceived after the secret marriage.[6] Some sources cite Paul as the father of the child, [1][2] while others cite it to be a result of date rape.[4][7] The marriage certificate of Jayne and Paul lists their date of marriage as May 6, 1950.[8]

Can someone verify the following part of it?

The marriage certificate of Jayne and Paul lists their date of marriage as May 6, 1950.[8]

I don't have access to the certificate and have no clue of its credibility. 13:18, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Trying that. But, I don't think a request for verification should go without the content that needs to be verified. If the marriage certificate is true then almost all the biographers are wrong. Contacting wikipedia is a nightmare!

Contacting wikipedia is a nightmare! I didn't know before I needed to. For conacting you guys, i think, there needs to be different formats other than standart wikistyle. When i clicked on the left "contact wikipedia", i found myself in a mess! There is a loooong list for contacting which makes it very difficult for a first time usage.

Anyways I want to say why i needed concact wikipedia: The Eastern Turkestan issue seems to have been in big dispute, but the chinese editors do not allow it to be in "biased state" with POV mark. Can you please call the attention of an expert on this issue. I am afraid if i do that, the chinese editors will revert it instantly.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.104.30.234 (talk) 13:23, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese editors prohibit you from editing? Who are those to stop you? Remember, be bold, and edit the pages yourself. Always remember to follow Neutral point of view before publishing your edits; as like "Example's candy is not better than me" is violating NPOV. I hope you understood. Dipankan says.. ("Be bold and edit!") 14:25, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Could you be more specific? The East Turkestan article has had only four edits in the last week. Dismas|(talk) 14:59, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I feel, the IP does not refer to this article, or probably not on the English wikipedia, the Chinese one. Anyways, I am not sure. extra999 (talk) 15:13, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

After an earlier encounter with the Live Help Desk, I was quite disillusioned to discover that the principles - Be polite, and welcoming to new users - Assume good faith - Avoid personal attacks were completely obliterated in a few sentences. I still have no idea how to flag the neutrality of an article, and the tone was hostile like Fox News. If that's the mentality, I have little choice but to refuse appeals for fiscal help as well as endorse the credibility of the articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.223.85.236 (talk) 22:34, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I got a message from response by AnkhMorph which was quite irrelevant to the concerns I raised. As for the April Fool's jokes in the front page's "Did you know" section--deliberately omitting crucial facts about the articles (the California is in England, the gang leader is a leader of baboons, the Virgin Mary is a book)--it seems like a desperate attempt to generate page hits, and, worse lacks comedic value. Leave the jokes to the funny pages, where at least some cartoonists swap casts on April Fool's day (it was a big thing c. 1996, well over 50 cartoonists got into the act), creating actual humor. The only thing Wikipedia offers outside of irrelevance is hubris. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.223.85.236 (talk) 11:20, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

user name on Commons

Hi, I previously made an account with the same username on Wikipedia Commoms (before unified logins were create). I seemed to have forgotten the password, and the email address associated with the account is now closed, would I have to usurp the account or is there another process for this? Thanks. Gsingh (talk) 17:46, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You have to usurp. See commons:Commons:Changing username for the procedure. Neither your account here nor commons:User:Gsingh has specified an email address at Special:Preferences. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:56, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But I don't yet have a username yet for commons, so what would my current name be? Gsingh (talk) 22:48, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Create a Commons account with any name before filing the request. Explain that you are the user with the unified login. You can state so on your user talk page here at the English Wikipedia with mention of the temporary Commons name, and then link to it from the Commons request. No, properly executed, it can be fun, and funny. The problem is that it is so rarely properly executed. --Jayron32 00:40, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It only works if everyone goes along with it, it's only just outside the bounds of credible, and it's utterly funny once pointed out. The Guardian newspaper did a brilliant one years ago, leading with a front page news story that scientists had worked out a way of controlling the weather, and were going to transform Britain's climate to be like the Riviera. Several big advertisers got behind this, particularly Guinness, who announced they were going to open a toucan park (toucans were used in their advertising), ran job adds for zoologists specialising in toucans, there was an article that printed plans for the proposed toucan park, other advertisers joined in. That was a truly great April Fool's joke. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 01:03, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Making a hoax just outside the bounds of credible is one strategy. Another is making it seemingly incredible yet actually factual, as with the TFA blurb for April Fool's Day 2007. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 01:50, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Another clever and well-executed hoax is Sidd Finch. The trouble is that it can't be automatic and repetitive. It needs to be well planned and well executed, else it just looks silly. --Jayron32 01:21, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
John Chung was another one (it's a redlink, I've been meaning to research this for a while); same concept with college football in (IIRC) the 50s. Had people going for months. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 02:26, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It may not be funny, when someone already did it for real: WP:DDMP and [2]. Also, April Fools jokes aren't funny if you announce them in advance. RudolfRed (talk) 01:31, 1 April 2012 (UTC
April fools jokes should be kept out if mainspace. This means a real article like Wikipedia should not get a deletion tag. In previous years there have been several pranks about deleting process pages. See Wikipedia:April fools. There are already a couple of pranks about deleting articles in 2012. The pranksters sensibly omitted to place deletion tags on the articles but then a bot discovered the "missing" tags and added them: Special:Contributions/Snotbot. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:20, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Snotbot continued adding such tags (and warning two users for removing them) until it was blocked until midnight for "April Fools' Day-related malfunction". PrimeHunter (talk) 03:05, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And not everyone knows what April Fools' Day is. It's not a universal concept. 71.146.8.88 (talk) 04:39, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag;

I am making my first Wikipedia page. I have read many pages of tips about getting started, and watched the video about how to add citations. And I thought I knew what I was doing. But after spending hours and hours trying to create this page, I still have two "Cite error" comments on my page in my Reference section.

The page I am creating is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_DeFilippis

The error messages I am getting are: Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag; and Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a {{Reflist}} template or a <references /> tag;

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix these errors? I have read the descriptions of how to fix these problems but apparently I do not understand what I am reading because nothing I am doing seems to succeed at correcting the mistakes.

Thank you!!— Preceding unsigned comment added by CRiley1985 (talkcontribs)

I'm on this... Give me a couple of minutes... Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 01:55, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've fixed it. What you had missed was that when you insert a citation, {{reflist}} automatically formats the list of references. You don't need to type them all out again. Elen of the Roads (talk) 01:58, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see Elen beat me to it. You might have been combining two different referencing styles. In some articles, such as Fungus, the details of all the references are written out down the bottom, and the article prose just contains <ref name=whatever/>. More commonly, the reference details are interspersed with the article prose, between <ref> and </ref> tags. But the two styles aren't normally combined within one article. Template returning the second-largest number of a set?

I'm looking for a template (or some other method) to find the largest, second-largest, third-largest (etc.) number in a series. The Template:Max/12 works very well to find a maximum, but it doesn't seem to have the option to discard the largest and return the remaining numbers sorted from the largest to the smallest.

E.g. {{Max/12|161653|374576|11725|56995|174620|42759|57223|53973|7581|15401|24509|28019}} will return the maximum, Template:Max/12. What template should I use to find the second largest number (174620 in this case)?--eh bien mon prince (talk) 15:22, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That is quite an unusual request. Category:Mathematical function templates lists all kind of mathematical stuff, but not something to find the 2nd highest. Astronaut (talk) 15:29, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We don't have it currently. It would be possible but messy and inefficient to code a template with a limited amount of allowed numbers. What do you want to use it for? PrimeHunter (talk) 15:39, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I need it for the Template:Infobox South African town (you can see it on pages like Randburg or Bloemfontein). South Africa has 11 official languages, and the infobox has only 5 fields for the languages (and including all 11 would be impractical anyway) so ideally the template should figure out by itself which languages should be included (the most widely spoken) and which ones should be left out. It already does this for the largest language by using Max/12, but I didn't manage to use it to determine the second, third, and fourth most spoken languages.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 15:48, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's already a very slow template. It takes me 30 seconds to preview a page with {{Infobox South African town|censuscode=77421}} (Randburg) and nothing else. Many large articles take less than 10 seconds. The template should be made faster and not slower. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:18, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

how to cite an article in a book

I've been going through articles trying to clean up their citations using citation templates. I ran across the article Transformation processes (media systems) and in it there are several citations of named articles that are part of a book, or collection, of articles on a given topic. Both the article and the book itself has an author/editor. Which citation template should i use?

Can preview tell me if there is an edit conflict?

Can the preview show if there is an edit conflict? Sometimes I take a little long to make my edits, looking at "show changes" and "preview" to make sure I didn't introduce a typo or other goof, and then when I click submit I get the edit conflict. Is there any option or setting so that I can be notified of a conflict when I preview my changes? RudolfRed (talk) 22:27, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not directly. "Show changes" will show a diff to the current version and not to the version when you started your edit, so this can give you an indication. If the same paragraph has been edited then you generally get an edit conflict. Otherwise it can be complicated to figure out. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:35, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Princeton High School, princeton West Virginia

I was reading information about Princeton High School class of 1981 as being the last class to graduate in the old high school which is now the middle school. The fact is the last graduation class was 1982 which is the year I graduated high school. From 1982 (fall) to present day it is called Princeton Senior High School. Please change when you get a chance. You may contact the school directly to verify but my class was the last class to graduate NOT 1981.

movie missing in article on film noir

Your article on the list of film noir classics does not include the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock classic "The 39 Steps." It really needs to be added. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.181.92.3 (talk) 03:06, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In Wikipedia's defense, the list of film noir titles does have "Film noir is not a clearly defined type, so composition of this list may be disputed" as its lead sentence. Dismas|(talk) 03:10, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly that's because it isn't film noir? A 1935 film isn't part of the classic period of film noir in the 40s and 50s, and the article says British noir didn't really get going till 1947, so unless you have some critics/authors agreeing with you, I'd be wary of adding it. --Colapeninsula (talk) 15:24, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Watching sections of pages

I really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY enjoy the "watchlist" feature, where you can keep track of edits to pages you want to follow. Tell me, is it possible to just "watch" a particular section of a page, as opposed to the whole page? For example, I've commented in some Redirects for discussion debates, and I'd like to be able to see how those debates turn out without my watchlist getting overrun with material related to other redirects being discussed on that same page. Is there any way to just watch one section? Thanks. User:Davidfreesefan23 (talk) 03:37, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, there is no way to watchlist a section of a page. You can only watchlist whole pages. GB fan 03:47, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The lead in the WP Duct tape article implies that 'duct tape' is synonymous with 'duck tape; however Duck Tape® is a registered trademark of Duck® brand products; trademarks are "...property of ShurTech or other members of The ShurTech Group, LLC" -- On the one hand, companies are understandably protective of their branding; on the other, adding "®" seems like promoting a product.

commenting on the mistake in an article

How do I tell the author of an article that a mistake has been made in a table? I can verify my information but am unable to change the table. The URL that I'm comment about is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitman_shorthand Pitriter (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 04:54, 2 April 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Wikipedia is written by many people and so there is no the author. There are many authors. You are one of them if you edit anything. So if you like, you can change the article yourself and cite your reference for the changed info. See Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners if you need help with that. If you are not up to the task, you can put your information with source on the talk page for the article in question. In this case, it would be at Talk:Pitman shorthand. Or you can put the info and reference here and one of the volunteers that read this desk will correct the information. It's up to you. Dismas|(talk) 06:13, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The tables in Pitman shorthand are images. If you click on them then you are taken to their file pages: File:Pitman Short Forms.PNG and File:Pitman Consonants.PNG. They can only be changed by creating a new image externally and then upload it. The creator of the images can be contacted at User talk:Xanthoxyl. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:41, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Language setting

Dear Wikipedia, I am a user who reads traditional Chinese. But the default for any Chinese Wikipedia page currently is simplified Chinese. Therefore, everytime I click on a link or do a search, I need to reset the language setting. I think this is unacceptable as it seems to me that there are political reasons behind it, but I am simply going to ask for a way to set my language preference permenantly to traditional Chinese. Also, I believe that keeping track of each user's prefered language is not a difficult task. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.83.193.221 (talk) 05:05, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Athletes changing name after winning an event

In an article listing winners of a particular sports competition (X): if an athlete wins while having name A, and later changes her name to B (usually due to marriage), which name should be used in article X? Bear in mind name A would be on the trophy and in news reports at the time, but her personal article is B. Is there a policy or guideline on this? Adpete (talk) 06:04, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The applicable policy WP:COMMONNAME says the name to be used is the name used by the majority of sources about the athlete. If a common name cannot be determined (for example because two names appear to be used equally often by news and media organizations or other sources, the policy says a consensus should be reached taking WP:CRITERIA into consideration. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 12:31, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When linking to an article one could easily use a pipe to display name A and link to article B, or there may well be a redirect if both names are likely to be used. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:30, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies#Changed names says: "If a person is named in an article in which they are not the subject, they should be referred to by the name they were using at the time of the mention rather than a name they may have used before or after the mention." You can use a piped link as David said. For example [[Lindsey Vonn|Lindsey Kildow]] to produce Lindsey Kildow. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:09, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Am I missing something or do I have to remember how I typed in my search terms to get back to the exact page if I need to? I'm also looking for info on an artist I know someone else has found in Wikipedia recently, and I can't find a word about him with the "search box". What next? Your browser has a back button which should get you back to whatever you were reading. Also, your browser keeps a history which you could go through. Using the Wikipedia search isn't always as easy as Google, so you might use that. Adding the word "wikipedia" to a Google search normally helps me narrow down the search results to just pages here. This is all you need to do, you just have a button, "upload photo" see facebook for examples, you sourcec your file, then ask all your questions and tick boxes, press a button called Upload and it uploads and then takes you back to your Wiki post, you have another button called "Done" or "post", you press it and the text and photo are uploaded -don't make it hard guys, please — Preceding unsigned comment added by Michael Partington (talkcontribs) 10:54, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make suggestions to improve how Wikipedia works, the village pump is the place to do so. But "why can't you do it the way Facebook does" might not be a good way to make your point. In particular, the point of using commons is that images can then be shared over hundreds of different Wikipedias, which isn't a issue facebook has. Also, facebook doesn't worry about copyright the way Wikipedia does. --ColinFine (talk) 15:22, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Username conflict

Whilst attempting to upload an image file today for the first time, I found that I could not log in to Wikimedia Commons with my usual English language Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org) login credentials (i.e. with my usual username Peter b (talk)).

After then working out that I was required to unify my login credentials across all Wikimedia Foundation sites, I attempted doing so. However, this attempt failed at the first step with a big pink notice saying...

The home wiki for this account (listed below) has a different password to the one you entered. Please enter the password for the home wiki.

Then I was advised that the Home Wiki for my login username was the Dutch language Wikipedia (nl.wikipedia.org), and that I needed to login there first.

Naturally I was both surprised and confused by this, as not speaking or reading any Dutch, I have never so much as visited any page on that Wiki. Investigating as best I could, I determined after some considerable searching (and with lots of help from Google translate), that there is indeed a completely different registered editor with exactly the same login username on the Dutch Wikipedia site, who apparently began editing the Dutch language Wikipedia about three years after I began editing the English language site.

At this point, I am in completely over my head and have no idea what to do next. Would somebody who knows what is going on here please help out.

Many thanks. Peter b (talk) 13:41, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Different Wikimedia wikis and language editions had separate accounts until 2008. Users could choose a username which already existed at another wiki, and the software did not register whether it was the same user. The account with the most edits has the right to the unified account. http://toolserver.org/~quentinv57/sulinfo/Peter_b shows the Dutch user has 44917 edits. The user is still very active and will probably not change username on your request. Then you have to choose another username at Wikimedia Commons. If you want a unified account then you can request renaming of your English Wikipedia account. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:00, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Scott Hamilton error

I do not wish to log in or create an account, but your article says Scott is 5' 2 1/2". I just saw a video where he himself says he is 5' 4". 216.164.124.249 (talk) 12:02, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip. I've clarified that 5' 2 1/2" was Hamilton's height at the peak of his amateur career, not the height to which he eventually grew. If you could provide details of the video we could include his final height, too. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 14:18, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to retire

I want to retire my page, but although I see that I need to put {{retired}} on the page, I don't understand exactly where or how. Could someone walk me through the process so I do it properly? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brooke McEldowney (talkcontribs) 12:15, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Retiring. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:39, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You need do nothing formal, but sure, you can place that template at the top of User:Brooke McEldowney, though it's a bit inapt in your case. You can't really "retire" from Wikipedia since you never had a Wikipedia "career", which we would translate to being at least a semi-regular editor. You have made only twelve edits so just stop editing and you will be "retired", so to speak.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:40, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IMDB and an official television network's forum

IMDB and Telemundo's official discussion forum... are they reliable sources by any chance? Because it's stated here that they're not considered as reliable sources, and I'm sure that Telemundo's forum is not exempted from that rule at all. The article in question is Aurora (telenovela). Platinum Star (talk) 13:34, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You are quite correct. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:41, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) You might be able to find something through Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Resources to replace the current content in Aurora_(telenovela)#Reception. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 13:45, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As you can see, the editor restored unsourced content twice, even after I said in the comments box that Telemundo's forum and IMDB aren't reliable sources. Kudos to J. Hunter for providing a list of reliable resources. If I can find something on those sites, I'll replace those 2 sources from that article. Platinum Star (talk) 13:51, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The 2nd paragraph has an error. It writes "A recent paper published by researchrs form the University of Pennsylvania and UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND..."

The capitalized words "UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND" is incorrect. It should read "Johns Hopkins Medical School Department of Dermatology"

"Shrapnel" in articles

I found that some articles mention shrapnel when "fragments" would be the correct term. This is explained in the Fragmentation_(weaponry) article. On the contrary, one image has the caption, "Diagram of S-mine in the delivery of steel ball shrapnel". AFAIK, and the "Difference" paragraph seems to support that, the velocity of the steel balls before the explosion is negligible, compared to the velocity after the explosion, and thus there is a "shrapnel" misnomer within the very article. However, I don't see an accompanying "[edit]" field to correct that, neither within the frame, nor does the paragraph containing the image seem to be editable.

Additionally, the File:Shrapnel2.JPG shows an artillery shell fragment which is probably not a shrapnel (as its shape is highly irregular, and shrapnel shells haven't been in military use in the Gulf War). It should probably be renamed to something like "Artillery_shell_fragment_(Gulf_War).JPG", the reason being that file names of that length are used, e.g. in the other file in the gallery, "File:Alte_Granatesplitter(...).JPG".

By "edit box", are you referring to the text inside the Editing Talk:Death of Sian O'Callaghan?[3] or the Edit Summary box? or? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 14:45, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Does it happen when you log out? Try to clear your entire cache. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:50, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
