GOCE March drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

I'm not as up on things as I once was. I had no idea that Artists from Seattle was an empty category. D'oh. I'm on a mission to get people who teach comix, minicomics and other comic and art disciplines at Pacific Northwest area schools (Vancouver, Seattle, Portland Oregon) wikipedia pages. I assure you that Stefan Gruber has been warned by me in person and on facebook that he's not allowed to edit his own page.

Your friend, Brodie Michael Wesley Kelly Brodo (talk) 05:46, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cindy, could you help me improve the article on Tim Jenkins that you recommended for deletion? I really think he is notable and would be a great addition to Wikipedia. I understand the Division I bias but think this guy is the exception to the rule. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thanks! --Adh80112 (talk) 15:18, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE May drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Last drive's superstar, Lfstevens, again stood out, topping the leader board in all three categories and copy-editing over 700 articles. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We were once again successful in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog—while removing 1166 articles from the queue, the second-most in our history. The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our third tranche of Guild coordinators will be expiring at the end of June. We will be accepting nominations for the fourth tranche of coordinators, who will also serve a six-month term. Nominations will open starting on June 5. For complete information, please have a look at the election page. – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, and Stfg

Please don't blank articles which you're tagging for CSD G12. It makes it slightly harder to verify the copyvio, and does very little to prevent damage since such articles are deleted quickly. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 10:20, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for contacting me. Standard procedure with copyright violations include blanking the infringing text. Thus, articles are automatically blanked by the software, when tagging for COPYVIO. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 10:26, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Tea Leaf - Issue Four

Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!

Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!

  • What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
  • ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
  • Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
  • 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
  • Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
  • New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
  • Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
  • New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
  • Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
  • Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
  • Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
  • Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.
  • Want to know how you can lend a hand at the Teahouse? Become a host! Learn more about what makes the Teahouse different than other help spaces on Wikipedia and see how you can help new editors by visiting here.
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is really encouraging to new Wikipedians.

Tom Rhodes Radio

Hey :). I've declined the speedy on Tom Rhodes Radio because it claims significance (and probably passes the GNG!). Looks like the edits that made it meet this standard were added after you put the tag in, though, so don't sweat it. Ironholds (talk) 07:46, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oh, no sweat here! LOL Yeah, it looks like they did add more content. The system works, go figure! Hope all is well in your little corner of the wikisphere. ;) Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 07:55, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is! Appropriately, just after encountering this tag I then ran into one you'd got just right. I love it when my AGF in other people being awesome justifies itself :D. Ironholds (talk) 07:59, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A Cappella Records

Hi, thanks for reviewing my page on ACR. It's my first attempt at creating a page for an organization, and I see that I have more to learn about wikipedia's standards. I sent you an e-mail a few days ago about the tags on the main page, asking whether or not they had been resolved through the inclusion of enough secondary sources. It looks like one has been, and I'll try to resolve the other one as soon as possible. Regarding the A Cappella Records discography page, I tried to copy the design of the page for Verve Records discography as much as possible, as they are a similar label. Wouldn't Verve's page violate the same directory rule? I'm just trying to understand whether I can include discography at all, or should just leave it off the article. All the best, TheEndlessVoid (talk) 18:19, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • A few things to keep in mind. Other stuff exists that should not be used as a measuring tool or guideline for creating an appropriate article. The music released on A Cappella Records and that released on Verve show no similarities between labels. Here is a better example of an appropriate discography for a record label: Dischord Records. On another note, sorry I missed your email. When you send an editor email, make sure to let them know. You can add this template {{ygm}} to their talkpage, which helps. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 21:16, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Esther Baum Born

I'm impressed you found what was indeed a copyright violation. Sorry about that: this was an article created just today as part of San Francisco WikiWomen's Edit-a-Thon 2; I ran out of time and agree with your revert. Will rephrase the material and give it a proper cite. Barte (talk) 01:55, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hey Bart! I noticed your note about coming back later, after I made some edits. (I was actually trying to find her full birthdate.) I look forward to reading the article when you are done. If you need help with anything, feel free to hit me back. Hope the WW Edit-a-Thon was fun! Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 02:02, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Cindy, I appreciate it--I've made additions, building on your structure; take a look and have at it. How did you find it so fast? (The Edit-a-Thon was great; this was our co-editor's first created article, and she was a natural.) Barte (talk) 03:40, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Borderland Beat Speedy Delete

Hi Cindy, a week ago my page for Borderland Beat was subject to a speedy delete. This happened while I was at work, so I didn't get a chance to see any comments that might have been in the ajoining Talk page before the Talk page got deleted. I understand that the reasons for the speedy delete were that I failed to make the case that Borderland Beat was notable and also that the page was advertising. Please help with the advertising reason, was it because I included a link to Nabble, or for some other reason. I know this all happened a week ago, so difficult to remember, but my Borderland Beat page is still up in my User:Georgeblake/sandbox. Thanks. Georgeblake (talk) 08:38, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi George! The Borderland Beat article was deleted for a couple of reasons. Rather than notability, the article failed to indicate how the subject is significant and/or important. What sets this Web site apart from others? Has it won awards? Is it mentioned in significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject? Please note that the number of hits a Web site receives is not indicative of notability. Notability is defined as that which is worthy of notice. Some editors mistakenly assume that advertising only relates to presentation in order to sale a product. The Borderland Beat article merely served to promote awareness of the Web site. We cannot accept articles under these terms, but require that articles comply with policies and guidelines that serve to verify that the subject warrants an encyclopedia article. Hope this helps. You can read about establishing notability for Web sites here. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 09:50, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CSD and copyvio

I have just declined Steel service center for speedy deletion. An article cannot be speedied because of a sentence or two of copyvio when the rest of the article is appropriate. The correct action here is to remove the copyvio. This is not the only speedy nomination I have seen from you with this problem, although admittedly the others looked of less encyclopedic value. SpinningSpark 11:28, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not sure where you're coming from. I am fully aware of the criteria for speedy deletion. The article was flagged for three separate criteria. In addition to the G12, the A7 and G11 was placed due to the promotion of the TSPDL Steel Service Centre in the article and by the editor as a single-purpose account in promoting Tata Group and Tata Steel, along with a failure to indicate importance or significance of the service center. The editor is creating articles to support his organization. Please note that I have a very good track record with CSDs, so your concern is really not a valid one. I have never encountered you before and you have never interacted with me or declined any of my recommendations previously. Is it possible that you have my account confused with another? If you have specific articles which you would like to address, please let me know. On another note, while you may have clipped a bit of copyvio, you failed to clean up your work. Can you please take another look at how you left this article? I think we can do better than this. Thanks. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 11:54, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • You are a little confused here. I cannot see that the article is about an organisation, it is about the topic of steel service centres, hence the reason I discounted A7 and G11. The article has two references, only one of which goes to Tata, the other one is the site of an entirely unrelated company as far as I know. Referencing to commercial sites is usually not the best quality an editor can pick, but is not in itself grounds for speedy deletion and the article is a clearly referenceable topic. This is the only article the editor has created, do you have any grounds for thinking the account is a sock? SpinningSpark 15:17, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not confused (could be my age), but I honestly cannot remember the other account names. For the most part, the majority of the articles are generally deleted, then a new username account is created and it starts all over again. I have encountered this editor numerous times over the years creating articles under the Tata Steel and Tata Group umbrella to include subsidiaries, company personnel, and family members. It's always the same with the sandbox development and creation of peripheral articles to eliminate red links, then promote various divisions of the organization by adding ELs to the article. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 17:20, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, that does not convince me it is a speedy candidate. I'm sure you know what to do if you want it deleted. I can find no connection between Tata and PDM Steel Service Centers Inc, so remain unconvinced that this is spam from Tata - although I am more than happy to take your word that they have spammed in the past. SpinningSpark 17:57, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Puzzling. I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I suppose recognizing the actions of this editor comes with experience. You declined the SD, as is your option, in the same way that I often decline SD. No harm; no foul. That said, I would recommend laying off the statement "this is not the only speedy nomination I have seen from you with this problem" when the reality is just not there. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 18:08, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't want to make any more of a meal of this, but you've asked me twice now, so I'll reply. The other articles I was referring to were two recent speedy nominations (sorry, I can't give diffs, they have both now gone from the category, but one was a peacock piece about some US lawyer). They were both marginal for speedy cases in my opinion, but I did not decline them either as I didn't much like either of them. Not trying to go any further with those cases, just answering your question. SpinningSpark 22:29, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I recall both articles. Clear copyright violations using the bios of both subjects from the law firm's Web site. And deleted in accordance with the G12 criteria. I would recommend a little less focus on minimizing the work of others and a bit more focus on your own. I notice the Steel service center remains in the crap condition you left it in. Feel like cleaning up your work yet? Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 22:41, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you redirect to Hastings despite there being absolutely no information about the aforementioned institution or even anything more concrete about primary education then "18 primary schools"? Nor did you even redirect it to the education heading. I don't have an issue with the removal of the article I created since I was not aware of that policy, but I do have an issue with sloppy procedure. Wouldn't a deletion, or at the very most, an attempt to integrate some of that information into the Hastings article have been better? Please don't do a policy dump on me either. Best regards. Jpanzerj (talk) 14:10, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hey there! Nonnotable primary and middle schools are redirected to school districts in North America or to the lowest geographical locale elsewhere. The redirect is an option for readers that may even come across the name of the school and run a search. While minimal, this particular redirect offers a location. The redirect also allows for a placeholder for the primary school, which may become notable in the future. For this reason, we provide a redirect, rather than deleting outright. The content in the article merely supported the existence of the school, so a merge was not feasible. Rather than sloppy procedure, the redirect in this case was established procedure. Please don't hesitate to contact me anytime you have a question about any of my actions or just questions in general. I won't bite. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 17:35, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE July 2012 Copy Edit Drive

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their July 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on July 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on July 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to eliminate the articles tagged in April, May and June 2011 from the queue and to complete all requests placed before the end of June. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 6 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in April–June 2011", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg.

Not On Out Watch

Hi Cindy, thank you for your help with this page. I thought some of the characteristics in the info box made it a bit too wordy, so made some changes. Looking for other references. Thanks again.Leilapaz (talk) 14:03, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Leila. I restored the information in the infobox. If infobox content is unavailable, we can just leave the field blank. To that end, I've removed any of the fields with extraneous information, as I understand this as your desire. Just remember not to remove the classes or collapse elements that you don't want to use. Other editors may come along and wish to add the information. Let me know if you have any questions. Best regards, Cindy(talk to me) 07:37, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
