DYK

HI... you have just expanded the article Charles D. Baker, Jr. by approximately 5x its previous size. As such, it might be eligible for DYK (Did you know...?) on the front page. If the article includes some peculiar or unusual fact about the person, you might want to suggest the article at DYK nominations. check it out: Template talk:Did you know‎ Seb az86556 (talk) 22:36, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query On August 19, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Charles D. Baker, Jr., which you created or substantially expanded. GA review

Hello - I have reviewed Charles D. Baker, Jr., which you listed at the Good Article nominees page. My review of the article can be found here. As you can see, I've raised quite a few issues with the article. Before you panic/become depressed/burn me in effigy, though, here are some things to bear in mind:

  • The points I raise are not necessarily all things that need to be addressed before I list it as a GA. Instead, they are things that I think could improve the article. In my view, the actual GA status is of secondary importance in the GA process; what's more important is improving the article, and I think that goal is best served by making as many suggestions as possible.
  • In my experience, I'm among the most stringent GA reviewers out there, especially in the "well-written" category, where I tend to review GA and FA candidates in essentially the same way. Again, I do this because I think it's best for the article; however, if you think the points I've raised are too nit-picky or minor and you'd rather not address them, I may be willing to promote the article without them all being addressed.
  • The opinions I express in my GA reviews are just that - my opinions (I also express some things, like grammatical rules or the requirements of WP:V, that are not my opinions). If you disagree with any of my opinions, please say so; you don't need to convince me that you're right, just that your position is a reasonable one.

Hi, just a notice that FLC nominators are expected to respond in a timely manner to comments made by reviewers. I noticed this edit, so I did not close the FLC as some of the reviewers were suggesting, but I don't always have time to check the list. Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 00:20, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Utah Governor List

Please check my latest comment on the FLC, particularly the bit about Term vs Terms. I know I kind of held up the Maine list because of this, but I've stated a real concern with it (I don't think it will allow uniformity across the whole wiki due to cases like New Jersey, which may not be as edge-casey as it seems), so I'd like your comments on that. Thanks. --Golbez (talk) 04:40, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:04, 15 June 2010 (UTC) [reply]

I liked the way you argued in favor of a "checkmark" - that was a very persuasive list of attributes, in the kind of aesthetic debate where it's far easier for people just to say "I like this one, it looks neat" :) I quite like User:Locos epraix's suggestion of copying the Spanish Wikipedia's symbol - it seems a sensible compromise between what we have at the moment, and the advantages you listed. Governors

I saw you stopped by the Governor of Indiana page. I had put this on Golbez's talk page today:

"I've gone thru and updated 10 FL lists... Hawaii thru Wisconsin. I've tried to make them all consistent with current FL standards (aka utah plan). I mostly didn't update the wording in the lead or first few paragraphs, just made sure the paragraphs are in the right spot. Also checked for linkrot and updated the citations where necessary. Could you check and make sure things are ok. I'll do the same for Alabama-Delaware, but thankfully you've been keeping them upto date."

Golbez doesn't seem to talk alot, so I'm not sure if things are ok. Any comments you would be really appreciated. I saw you changed the images in the infobox to be larger. I've been struggling with that. In alot of cases, including Indiana's, the infobox is to long compared to the lead. I've considered dropping the state seals and only keep an image if it's the governors seal or flag. Thoughts? Also saw you wikilinked the Governor of Indiana in the lead's first sentence. Some articles had it wikilinked and other didn't. I unwikilinked it because that was how Utah had it. What is the correct way? Didn't know if you saw this, but the "Governor of Colorado" link and "List of Governors of Colorado" link were combined into the "Governor of Colorado" link with the list's content. Wonder if this should be done to others eventually? Bgwhite (talk) 04:43, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

job vs. campaign

What someone did to prepare for the job (as opposed to preparing for the campaign) is relevant to the job. The job is (supposedly) more important than the campaign for it. The personal life is (supposedly) least important. That why the chronology is within each section, as opposed to overall. I didn't come up with it, but I agree with it. As for the really large articles such as Obama, I believe they have sub-articles just about the campaigns so it's different. The other issue involved is that because of 'currentism', we often have Undue Weight on the campaign as opposed to the actual job. Mixing them together therefore trivializes the actual job they're (supposedly) doing. Also, the links to the elections articles (which is where most of this stuff belongs, anyway) are important. Flatterworld (talk) 01:41, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do what you like. imo starting out the lede with 'politician' and prefixing his current position with his party affiliation makes him sound like a political hack instead of the holder of an important national office. I also don't see the point in stating that he's the past mayor of Springfield twice within the lede itself. Flatterworld (talk) 16:07, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Massachusetts State Senate

I've called it Massachusetts State Senators to keep it consistent with the other state templates. I keep a uniform style on all State Legislative Templates. Adding the 187th General Court ruins the uniformity, as well adding the Senate Delegations also ruins it. Leave that information on the State Senate page.--Jack Cox (talk) 21:54, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Of course I can see that. The reason I have it labled as State Senators is because there is a wikipedia project working on it like that. I've been putting lots of hours into going over these articles on Wikipedia. I've made substantial changes along the way but I'm asking for some Brevity here. I've been slowed down because of this protracted fight. I have no intention of changing it, nor will I. I apologize if I sound like a cranky old man but it's just very frustrating.--Jack Cox (talk) 22:02, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am begging you to leave the Session Number of the Legislature off the Senate Template, I have compromised quite a bit here, I've agreed with your idea of putting blocks for state legislators. I've compromised by allowing you to have Senate instead of State Senate now I'm asking you to compromise with me and please allow that to remain off.--Jack Cox (talk) 23:29, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Since you seem to know a lot about this individual, I wonder if you could elaborate on the comment: "That year he led a three-week labor strike, refusing to sign a contract with the Associated General Contractors, despite pressure from within his union. The union international ultimately signed the contract without Lynch's approval, causing him to file suit against them." -- the reflink is old and only includes a one paragraph excerpt which does not explain at all the reasoning or background of the situation. If you could fill in some blanks it would be appreciated. Thanks. Rms125a@hotmail.com (talk) 00:47, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Untied states governors

Greetings. I apologize for the inconvenience with WikiProject US governors. Someone suggested merging a couple of projects into WikiProject United States based on an appearance of inactivity. United States governors was one of them. I did this one without much discussion only because it appeared basically inactive and I could find no evidence of a member list. There is a discussion on the projects talk page and Charles Edwards mentioned that you are the other active editor for the project besides him. Newt Gingrich GA review

I have removed myself from participation in the GA project. Newt Gingrich is the only outstanding review left for me. It seems work is going slow and there is no reason it cannot stay on hold as long as it takes to fix problems. There is no rush, however if you feel more comfortable having another reviewer we can stop and request a 2nd opinion. In this way it doesn't have a "fail" just for my being removed as reviewer. If you have no objection to my finishing the review, take your time and when you think it's ready let me know.--Amadscientist (talk) 00:12, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Designate. You have new messages at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical).
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Hey there. Not sure whether you are still following the thread, but JohnnyMrNinja found that this Skype plugin issue has popped up several times already and is apparently causing problems (real ones, editing related, too).

In the thread you wrote that There are ways to disable it sitewide using a <meta> tag. I've found the same info in a thread at the Skype forums. The meta tag is

<meta name="SKYPE_TOOLBAR" content="SKYPE_TOOLBAR_PARSER_COMPATIBLE" />

You also wrote that adding the meta tag requires changes to the MediaWiki backend, which won't happen. I have no idea about the technical difficulties involved, so it would be great if you could briefly explain. Would it be useful to file a BugZilla report on the issue (there currently isn't one), or is adding the meta tag technically unfeasible for some reason?

Thanks in advance, --213.168.116.251 (talk) 11:08, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Newt Gingrich introduction

Hello Designate, my name is Joe DeSantis, and I am the communications director for Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign. I see that earlier this month you had helped to clean up the introduction to Newt's article. It is certainly better now than then, but there are clearly still issues remaining, and I've posted some suggestions on Newt's discussion page. Obama article

Thank you for your note about the unemployment graph. See also my general note about the lack of criticism in the article, which was immediately hatted. It would appear that we are up against some kind of organized effort. A strong response is required. As a new user, I don't know how to do that. But I think it would be appropriate to bring up this matter at the highest levels of Wikipedia. After all, we appear to have an organized effort to turn the article on the President of the United States into a puff piece.

Feel free to contact me at my real email, which is [my last name][at]gmail[dot]com. William Jockusch (talk) 17:20, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the unhatting. There is strength in numbers. I have past experience with shill operations of the type that we appear to have here. The following are likely to be observed:

  • A large number of people will be involved in maintaining the article in its puff piece state.
  • If one of the people involved in maintaining the criticism-free article is caught doing something inappropriate, they may lay low for a while. Others will take their place. This allows them to avoid getting banned/losing admin privileges, etc.
  • The puff piece supporters will show a deep knowledge of Wikipedia rules, policies, and procedure. They will always find superficial justification for their actions, yet the cumulative effect will be to maintain the article in an inappropriate state.

Regards. William Jockusch (talk) 01:42, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Obama Controversies Not Mentioned

If you want some points that have been getting kept out of the Obama article for years, controversies they don't want mentioned no matter how prominent, here are some examples.

  • Opposed medical care for newborn infants, was a major issue in both the 2004 and 2008 elections and brought up by Alan Keyes, Hillary Clinton, and John McCain. Newt Gingrich brought it up in 2012. I've written this page covering it, which includes 50 prominent sources. Some major sources include:[2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
  • Disqualified all four opponents in first election, in 1996, so he could run unopposed. He used a team of lawyers to disqualify the petition signatures of opponents on technicalities after the filing deadline. I've written this section covering it. Some major sources include:[9][10][11][12][13]
  • Struck a deal with Illinois Senate leader to get all legislation from other Illinois Senators directed to his desk in 2003, building his entire legislative record in one year, in preparation for the 2004 elections so he could become a U.S. Senator. I've written this page covering it. Some major sources include:[14][15][16][17][18][19]

Language hatnotes

Hi Designate. I thought you had an excellent idea [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)/Archive_88#Surname_clarification_at_top_of_article here] that seems to have had a really inconclusive result. Many of the reasons to keepI agree that a footnote model towards non-English standard names is superior to the overly prominent name Hatnotes. Indeed, that is the format I adopted on Zersenay Tadese almost three years ago.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Hebrew College logo.svg)

Thanks for uploading File:Hebrew College logo.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Liz Mathis, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Libertarian (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Elizabeth Warren

Hi, Designate! We share an interest in having the best possible article on Elizabeth Warren. Please engage on the talk page about why you don't think we should mention she declined to be included in the Senate minority directory. Thanks! Yopienso (talk) 00:39, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't much of an explanation: "This is going in the lead. Period." And you changed what you call "this" from what you put in place earlier, anyway. Is it too much to ask that you write a explanatory comment? Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 03:34, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GA Nom for Rand Paul

Hello- You recently reviewed my nomination of Rand Paul to become a good article nominee. I really appreciate the feedback, and I have worked on improving on those issues. Can you reassess the page again to see if it now meets the criteria? Thank you very much for your critique and for reviewing the page. Have a happy easter/Passover/beautiful spring day! We need to talk about this page. Almost every single member of congress has a separate subsection for committee assignments. I'm a strong proponent of consistency. Can we find some common ground?--Jerzeykydd (talk) 15:31, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
So, for the third time today (7th or 8th this week), your name has shown up on my Watchlist. For the GA noms that you reviewed 3 times, to the articles you have nominated yourself, and the GAs and GA noms that you have contributed to in order to get them to that next level, I award you this Barnstar. Thank you so much for your work here! PrairieKid (talk) 01:34, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Zachary Taylor

I've started the review for Zachary Taylor, and would like your thoughts on a few points. Thanks for your work on this one! -- Khazar2 (talk) 20:02, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Scare Quotes

I noticed your edit at Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. I'm not a big proponent of scare quotes and I'm curious what your logic for the edit was. The sentence was repeating content from the NPR interview/reportage. If you don't think NPR agreed with Tsarnev's use of the term slut wouldn't it also disagree with his use of the word prostitute? I also don't understand how a tertiary source would use quotes in this fashion. Thanks for your time. Chris Troutman (talk) 22:38, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It just seems incongruous. Prostitute is a standard term, even if he used it as an insult; slut is only a slang term. It's like writing She responded by calling him a liar and a dipshit. It looks bizarre outside of quotation marks. I would add that the NPR article is a transcript of an interview, and does not necessarily represent NPR's typographical standards. I certainly don't feel strongly about it, though. Feel free to revert it. —Designate (talk) 00:30, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you comment on Talk:Zachary Taylor re: assassination theories? You've gone over all these sources better than I have, so I defer to your judgement. Cheers, -- Khazar2 (talk) 15:04, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kennedy edits

Hello Designate,

I am sorry you found some of my edits to be disruptive. All I aimed to do was simply add notes (verified of course) to the family page. Yes, I did searches and provided sources to back up my edits. Just felt you should know.
