Vasant Vihar is an exclusive neighborhood located in the South West Delhi district of National Capital Territory of Delhi.
Vasant Vihar is one of the most expensive residential areas in the world[1] and is home and work place to notable personalities, like international sports shooter Vikram Bhatnagar and Sikh Empire Royal family descendants. It houses two markets, the Vasant Vihar Market and the Basant Lok market from where the PVR Cinema multiplex chain started. It is located near the diplomatic area of Chanakyapuri, and houses over 50 diplomatic missions of foreign countries.[2]
Overview
The four main areas in Vasant-Vihar are Munirka Marg, Poorvi Marg and Paschimi Marg, literally Eastern and Western Street, that along Palam Marg and Vasant enclave area that form a rough triangle that encloses much of the neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is primarily residential and when first planned consisted of six blocks named A to F, with each block having its own local market. Houses located on Palam Marg consist of some of the most expensive real estate in the NCR region. Vasant vihar is the 16th most expensive residential area in the world.[citation needed]
The area nearby contains the residential colonies for employees of Air India, Reserve Bank Officers, Central Bureau of Investigation, Parliament.
At the edge of the neighbourhood, across the Outer Ring Road lies, the Uttara Swami Malai Temple on a small hillock. There is also a historic church located in Vasant Vihar, as well as some Mughal era monuments.It houses Holy Angels hospital for providing medical and matrix dental services in South Delhi. Houses here sell at prices ranging from ₹25 Crore to ₹200 Crore (US$ 5 million to US$ 40 million).
Education
Vasant Vihar also has schools such as Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Modern School, The Shri Ram School (Junior Wing) Tagore International School, Guru Harkrishan Public School, Holy Child Auxilium School (Senior branch), Delhi Public School (Junior Branch), SBDAV, Upras Vidyalaya. All the schools are privately funded that mostly follow English as the primary language medium of instruction, with Hindi being the second language. The structure and style of education is modeled on the British education system.
Infrastructure
For transport, there are four major taxi stands in addition to Radio cabs. There are 6 bus stops for route nos. 623 and 56, and the area will have a state of the art Metro station operable by 2014 to connect it to the phase III line of the Delhi Metro. The location of the metro station is near F-block and will have exits to the F-block residential area as well as the Basant Lok Shopping Complex, RBI colony and Hill View Apartments.
Electricity supply in Vasant Vihar is mostly consistent, except in summer months when there is scheduled load shedding. However, accessibility to secondary power soured like inverters and generators is common. Water supply is regular and relatively safe for drinking compared to other areas of South Delhi.[citation needed]
There are neighborhood grocery stores in each of the blocks where one can find all kinds of household provisions, and the markets also have meat vendors that supply halal meat. There are telecommunication service providers, office equipment services, dry cleaners, sweet shops as well as ATMs and branch offices of several banks like Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, HSBC Bank, ING, State Bank of India, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Punjab National Bank and others.
Vasant Vihar has several parks that offer its residents a wonderful location for morning and evening runs, outing with pets and outdoor activities for children for healthy growth and development. There is a massive district park, and each of the 6 blocks (A-F) have at least one park each to cater to the residents of the respective block. All parks have dedicated jogging tracks, flower beds and tree lines for natural beauty, benches and waste bins to add to comfort and hygiene standards of the parks.
Community life
Vasant Vihar has a community center called "Kalyan Kendra" run by the Residents Welfare Association (RWA) where several functions are held for getting together residents during festivities and celebrations. The apex governing body is elected to office by the residents every 5 years, and this body assumes charge of all welfare activities of the neighborhood's residents.
There is a community club called the Vasant Vihar Club, located on 88, Paschimi Marg that has several sports and health centers: a well equipped gym and dedicated facilities for swimming, clay tennis, badminton, squash, table tennis, billiards and snooker. There are card rooms, a library with a reading room as well a well serviced bar, two restaurants (Indian and Chinese cuisine) and a modern bakery. The club organizes events commemorating Indian festivals like Holi, Baisakhi, Diwali as well as socializing events like rain dance parties, live band music and Bingo (Tambola) parties on Sundays. The membership charges for residents is very reasonable, and members are permitted to invite non-resident guests at a nominal charge for participating in the club and its activities.
