can somebody fix the timeline on the Panic! at the Disco page — Preceding unsigned comment added by PacoDaKing14Sportz (talkcontribs) 02:49, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Probably, but I'd suggest asking on the article's talk page. There are 656 watchers, so the chances are good you can get some help there. Or, maybe someone else here knows how to fix it. In the meantime, however, it's so messed up that I think we should revert your edit, and I will do so. Anyone who wants to see what it looked like after your edit can easily display that revision from the page history. ―Mandruss  02:56, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Upload Company Logo to Wikipedia Page

    Hi

I hope this email finds you well.

I'm hoping you can help me add our company logo to the approved Wikipedia page, I've created. MessageMedia

    How would I do this?

Thanks Rey — Preceding unsigned comment added by MessageMediaGlobal (talkcontribs) 06:54, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MessageMediaGlobal see Wikipedia:Uploading images and WP:FU. Your company logo would be treated as Fair Use.
There are some problems you need to solve, however. Your username is not supposed to be the same as that of your company; see WP:CORPNAME. See WP:CHU to find out how to change it (and I see the name has been blocked).
According to the history, the majority of the article MessageMedia was created by Kitkatwalk. Is that you? If so, do not post with the other name (not a concern now). And you have a conflict of interest which should be disclosed on your user page. By "approved", I assume you meant someone in your company approved of the content (this is not necessary for Wikipedia, and it is in fact discouraged), but at this point it appears the Wikipedia community has approved of this version, at least enough not to delete it.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:43, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am confused about the issue of conflict of interest or any other issue. It's true that I am trying to edit my own page. anything I posted is easily verified and I did not try to amplify it's importance just listing it as my involvement with music. I am open to any corrections as long as it is factual. I only did this revision to correct some of the stuff that was posted erroneously. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am very honored to be represented in wikipedia and would not want to do anything against the rules. I have viewed other song writer pages that have done similar posts so I forged ahead out of ignorance. Thank you for your help. Dick MondaDaddydewdrop (talk) 07:06, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia strongly discourages people from writing articles about themselves, and the Daddy Dewdrop article shows why. You have done a pretty good job (compared to other self-written articles), but it still needs a lot of work. For example, clauses like "the creation of original music was beginning to take over his attention" and "he felt one of the songs had commercial potential" need to go - these are subjective, and cannot be be supported (as Wikipedia requires) by independent reliable published sources. Also, it would be better to have more references to such sources for the objective facts in the article. I have tried using Google to search for some, and failed to find any; this surprises me, as even I, with no interest in modern music, can remember some of your lyrics. Maproom (talk) 10:25, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! You are welcome to help, but WP is VERY strict on HOW you should do that when you are the subject of the article (or employed by, related to, friend with, etc). In general, help us to find WP:RS about you and suggest them on Talk:Daddy Dewdrop, but don´t edit the article directly. A start can be to take the time and read Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Good luck and keep asking questions! Wikipedia:Teahouse specialise in helping new editors. Restore article

How do I enquire about getting an article restored when the user who deleted it no longer exists? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Heshs Umpire (talkcontribs) 09:48, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you provided the name of the article or the user that deleted it, it would make it easier for someone to help you - X201 (talk) 09:59, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Heshs Umpire: If the administrator is no longer active, you can post a request to the administrators' noticeboard. You can also contact an admin in Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to provide copies of deleted articles. If you believe the page was deleted in error, you can go to deletion review, where a consensus will form as to whether the deletion was proper or not. Make sure you review our deletion policy before you instigate a deletion review. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 11:03, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    sun also rises (novel) anti-Semitism

I want to submit the following (after Beegel) in Sun Also Rises (novel) article, but cannot manages to do so.

Critic William Adair points that narrator Jake Barnes, unlike his friends, “never refers to Cohn as an unattractive Jew during the ‘real time’ of the story.” His anti-Semitic remarks come months later as he writes his novel – which means either that Cohn’s going off with Brett has turned Jake into an anti-Semite, or more likely, that Jake is trying to “prejudice his 1920s readers against Cohn.”[68] See Adair, William. Your comments are about The Sun Also Rises. The article does mention anti-Semitism. The place to discuss possible changes to the article is the talk page, Talk: The Sun Also Rises. Citations

I understand from WP:NOENG that citations in a foreign language are acceptable in en.wiki articles. In one particular article in en.wiki which is a short biography of an Iranian, three out of 12 footnote citations are in Farsi (Persian) without an English translation. Is this high proportion of foreign-language citations acceptable? I understand that they are from Reliable Sources. ~ P-123 (talk) 14:53, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Zero english sources would be acceptable. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 16:26, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So Wikipedia readers of the en.wiki have to take it on trust that foreign language citations they cannot understand have been properly vetted. So "verifiable" in the following quote from the second of the WP:FIVEPILLARS means verifiable by the editors, not the readers :
"All articles must strive for verifiable accuracy, citing reliable, authoritative sources, especially when the topic is controversial or is on living persons."
    and "must strive for" is a pious hope, not a requirement. ~ P-123 (talk) 21:30, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That a particular Wikipedia reader (or editor) may lack the skills to read another language has no impact on whether or not the source in question in another language has a reputation for fact checking, accuracy and editorial oversight. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 21:41, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
P-123 you got a cut clear answer from the help desk: "Yes. Zero English sources would be acceptable". Please allow the help desk to help other editors instead of wasting their time. 193.109.199.242 (talk) 22:07, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • 193.109.199.242: Yes, it was a clearcut answer. I was merely making comment afterwards, was not raising further questions, others have chosen to respond to that comment, I was not the one wasting time. ~ P-123 (talk) 08:47, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We also allow editors to cite books that you don't personally have in your library, and scientific papers that you don't have the technical background to understand. If you have concerns about a particular source, there are many options available to you, including asking someone who speaks the language (including at the Wikipedia Reference Desk), running the text through Google Translate, or paying a translator. WP:SAYWHEREYOUREADIT woul apply to this last comment. --  Gadget850 talk 23:05, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My comment was addressed to P-123's concern about his purported inability to personally verify the contents of non-English sources, and the options available to him to carry out such verification. I didn't intend to suggest that Wikipedia editors should commission translations of non-English works and try to cite them in our articles, nor do I recommend or endorse citing non-English sources which the editor is unable to himself read. (In much the same way that I do not support editors who cite scientific papers that they have not read or clearly do not understand.) TenOfAllTrades(talk) 23:33, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This may be about Tommy (1975 film), which has a "Plot" section. Tommy (1931 film) has nothing like a synopsis.
What edits do you need help in making? Maproom (talk) 19:11, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Based on Special:Contributions/107.215.182.11 it appears to be about Tommy (album) and not one of the film articles. I'm seeking help as the author of the page on G. Flint Taylor. A neutrality dispute was placed on the article in October, 2014, and I haven't been able to determine why or what the process is for removing such claim. I've already posted the same request on the article talk page with no success. If an experienced editor could please look at this article page and advise, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Viewing the history of the page, I see that User:Graeme Bartlett applied the tag on 26 October 2014. Applying a tag to an article without explanation is sometimes known as drive-by tagging. On the one hand, he didn't say what he thought was non-neutral about the article. On the other hand, you are right that tags should normally not be removed without addressing the concerns. I would advise you to ask User:Graeme Bartlett (at User talk:Graeme Bartlett, to discuss his concerns about the article on the talk page, Talk: G. Flint Taylor. infobox Film

I would like to know when the notification of an article being a stub disappears after one edited an article to a page? I would like to know how to add lines to the Infobox Film? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MirisElocin (talkcontribs) 22:18, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Almost nothing "occurs" - changes require a human to make an edit. A human would have to review the current article status and say "yes, this article has progressed beyond the criteria of a "stub" to a "start" (or higher level) rating and remove the stub template. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 22:35, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And an overview of all Infobox Film parameters is at Template:Infobox Film; most templates (atleast the common ones) have a documentation available at [[Template:templatename]]. GermanJoe (talk) 22:42, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If a parameter is not identified in the main template (linked above), you cannot add a new one at the article level. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 22:52, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    @MirisElocin: See Wikipedia:Stub for an explanation of what a stub is. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:55, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The notification is separate code, a template, that is manually added to a page. It's possible for the shortest page not to have the notification, and it's possible to add one to a huge page — it's the code {{stub}}, or a more dedicated type (e.g. {{Germany-geo-stub}}), that is placed at the bottom of a page. What to do on here

I go on here a lot, but i want to go beyond just reading articles
i only know 3 things you can you can do, all of which have problems

    1. Vandalizing it

I know, you aren't supposed to vandalize Wikipedia, but i did it anyway. It's only fun when you are actually editing, but there is a constant fear of being blocked by an administrator. Its not really fun either because i did it as an IP, so there are barely any articles to vandalize, and doing certain things will trigger a filter. It also gets reverted by a bot in five seconds, so nobody is really going to see it unless they click 'view history'. I am tired of vandalizing Wikipedia.

    2. Reverting vandalism

It's as fun catching vandalism as actually vandalizing Wikipedia. I tried it once, but i sucked at it. The edits i reverted were NOT vandalism and I never got granted rollback.

    3. General editing

Not as fun as the two options above. Also, i don't feel like paying attention to detail, so i don't find anything wrong with the articles

If there is another option, let me know. If i have to do the latter two options, give me some advice. Thanks. --67.197.40.222 (talk) 23:04, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

if you have language skills, you can help with translation. if you have mad arts skillz you can help produce and clean up images. if you have a good camera, you can take and contribute images. if you are good at helping others settle disputes you can join the mediation team. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 23:44, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that WP:DRN or WP:RFM wants anyone who thinks that vandalizing is "fun". Robert McClenon (talk) 12:30, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
good point. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:47, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I tried hard, but I couldn't think of any activity here that I would call "fun". Rewarding, sometimes, but not "fun". It would be awesome if you could have fun and build an encyclopedia at the same time, but that doesn't seem to be possible. ―Mandruss  23:56, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Probably the most "fun" way this individual can help Wikipedia is to go live life and come back when mature enough that vandalism is not seen as "fun" . -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:49, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    We all were thinking it. ―Mandruss  18:11, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    orphan articles

I was trying to find Lord Dennings judgment about small print in contract law. I found a reference to a case " Anglo Continental Holidays Ltd v Typaldos Lines (London) Ltd " on another site so looked it up on here. the page existed but it no content except an invitation to provide some. I simultaneously had found he answer on another site. I felt inspired to join and provide he answer in the empty subject heading. In order to check that all was well I looked up simply "Lord Denning" and found full and comprehensive information including the case I was originally looking for, but not the article I had just filled in, which included the name "Lord Denning". I now feel my efforts were superfluous and would be much better replaced with a clear sign-post to the main article about Lord Denning. I suspect that in many cases a better connection tag would be more useful than filling empty headings. I don't know if this is within the competence of us keen contributors

    Capitalization in a Wikipedia article

Let's say that the name of an article in Wikipedia is, for example, "Murder of John Smith". Let's also assume that the article begins with the following sentence: "The murder of John Smith occurred on January 1, 1972." Oftentimes, we will bold some words in the introductory sentence if they match the name of the article. So, in a case like this, would it be correct to have the first sentence read: "The murder of John Smith occurred on January 1, 1972."? Or should it be: "The Murder of John Smith occurred on January 1, 1972."? So, is the "m" in the word "murder" capitalized or lower-case? In a normal English sentence, we would not use a capital "m" in this case. But, in Wikipedia, I often see the letter capitalized (when it normally would not be) simply because it matches the exact title of the article. Is there some rule, policy, convention, etc., to be followed? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:49, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WP:LEADSENTENCE says: "When the page title is used as the subject of the first sentence, it may appear in a slightly different form, and it may include variations, including synonyms." Lowercasing that M would qualify as a slightly different form, and it would look more natural with it lowercased. I'm about 99% certain it should be lowercased. ―Mandruss  17:58, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
100% lower case in this instance. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:22, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, it must be lower case. If the lead sentence does not repeat the title exactly the bolding would be adjusted to suit, e.g.; "John Smith was murdered on January 1, 1972..." -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 14:02, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To editors Dodger67 and Joseph A. Spadaro: I don't believe this is correct. According to the relevant style guideline, there should be absolutely no bolding if the title does not actually appear. (The example given is The Beatles' rise to prominence in the United States at The Beatles in the United States.) To editor Mandruss: I was referring to Roger's example of "John Smith was murdered...", not the original inquiry. Anon126 (notify me of responses! / talk / contribs) 00:30, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Espousals" is a part of that proper name, the name of the feast, and therefore should be capitalized. ―Mandruss  18:49, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion was started on a core policy page (since moved to a subpage), it’s got an RFC on it and a note at WP:Village pump (policy), provisional changes have been made to some articles… yet there is very little involvement from more than a few editors. What else could be done to get more editors involved? Or is that it? Or should I be asking this somewhere else? I think the thing to do is just let it run its course as is and, if it fails, lick your wounds and move on. In any case, I don't know of a way to get more eyes than you already have, short of posting notifications in venues that aren't related to the topic. ―Mandruss  18:54, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to Communicate with an IP... Looking for the right place to ask

An IP on one of the pages I edit has been coming close to edit warring with me over a sentence that they consider irrelevant to the topic but I believe is important to the topic. (It's a mention of a US release for a foreign film that qualified for several American awards due to the release.) I've tried asking them to talk it out on the talk page, but they've just kept on removing the sentence in question. Where do I go for help for something like this, especially since this person has been making reasonable edits on other pages? Luthien22 (talk) 02:40, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried Wikipedia:Administrator's Noticeboard/Incidents? You can notify administrators there and they will take action. Also in the event of an edit war, see Administrator's Noticeboard/Edit warring. pcfan500talk|my contribs 02:54, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) This page is about how to use and edit Wikipedia, as stated at the top, so it's a good enough place to ask. The IP hasn't ediited Song of the Sea (2014 film) for about 46 hours, and their contribs show that they have edited several others since then. They may have moved on. In any case, I'd suggest a little light reading, starting perhaps with Wikipedia:Edit warring, and come back if it leaves you with other questions. ―Mandruss  02:59, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to both of you! My concern is that this is the third time I've gone through this series of edits with this IP, and they don't seem to be willing to communicate. Although it hasn't actually escalated to an edit war according to WP:3RR, it's gotten frighteningly close, and I don't like counting the number of reverts I do on a page or checking time stamps. I think I might wait a bit before getting an admin involved, but if it does happen again, I now know where to go. Luthien22 (talk) 03:05, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No change. This is happening in Firefox. If I try Chrome, it works fine. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:17, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, since I'm also a Firefoxer. Go to a page with the big letters and then click on the three horizontal bars in the upper right. What zoom percentage do you see? ―Mandruss  03:20, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That does it. I was at 250%. Thanks. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:23, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Slow-motion edit war at Kelami

I'm involved in a slow-motion edit war with some IP editors who are repeatedly adding information about a World of Warcraft character to the article on an Azerbaijani town of the same name (Kelami). Is there anything I can do to deal with this issue, other than just continuing to revert the edits? —Granger (talk · contribs) 03:13, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ugly-looking URL in reference - any way to make it look better

    Hi all,

This about Dance in the City. The URL in question is http://www.musee-orsay.fr/en/collections/works-in-focus/painting/commentaire_id/city-dance-country-dance-8908.html?commentaire_id/city-dance-country-dance-8908.html?tx_commentaire_pi1[pidLi]=509&tx_commentaire_pi1[from]=841&cHash=8764d0ef62&S=1. It renders as [pidLi=509&tx_commentaire_pi1[from]=841&cHash=287e0fb5ef "Pierre Auguste Renoir: City Dance, Country Dance"].
Truncating it to http://www.musee-orsay.fr/en/collections/works-in-focus/painting/commentaire_id/city-dance-country-dance-8908.html just brings up a general page about the museum's "works in focus".

OK, so the URL contains [-s and ]-s which confuses the wiki-code. Is there any way around this?

    Adding links to art website

    Hello,

I have made an Art website specialized on painting (www.bestofpainting.com) and I wish to include links to it in every artist biography that has a gallery on my website, like this one: Hans Memling at Best Of Painting (http://www.bestofpainting.com/Flemish-Primitives/Hans-Memling/) I do not wish to spam Wikipedia, these links show a gallery of each artist's works and are therefore relevant to each artist biography. Please let me know how to be sure these links are not considered spam by wikipedia.

Best regards, Nuno Palmeirim — Preceding unsigned comment added by Npalmeirim (talkcontribs) 12:13, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you can get your website to develop some importance in the art world or garner some significance online, it would be a welcomed addition. Using Wikipedia to help you do these things is by definition spam (relevant Wikipedia guideline). Also, what does your website provide that the links already found do not? For example, the Wikimedia Commons is linked on many different artists articles (e.g., commons:Category:Sandro Botticelli). What does your website offer that the Commons doesn't already? Scarce2 (talk) 13:43, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My website provides the user with very good quality images of each artwork, some of these are found on Wikimedia Commons, some of these are not available on Wikmedia Commons. It is also a "best of" selection of images, the user can see in a glance the artists most valued works, for instance Claude Monet: http://www.bestofpainting.com/Impressionism/Best-of-monet/. In the case of the better known artists, such as this one, we also provide a free aplication for both iOS and Android: http://www.bestofpainting.com/Impressionism/ I want to contribute to a better understanding of the artist by the wikipedia user, and I hope these links may prove to be useful for everybody. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Npalmeirim (talkcontribs) 14:23, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The website also sells such photos. But commercial or not, please see WP:EL (especially WP:ELNO) for additional information about external links in Wikipedia articles. GermanJoe (talk) 15:31, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What works featured on your site are not available on the Commons? How exactly are an artist's "most valued works" determined? The site simply appears to be a SmugMug gallery, which exists primarily (if not solely) to sell artwork. A good resource to link to from Wikipedia would be a database that provides details not found on Wikipedia (such as IMDb) that monetize in other ways (such as with advertising, as done by IMDb). You'll find the resources linked on Monet's article are institutions and non-profit sites; another link to a gallery seems redundant. Scarce2 (talk) 15:40, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK. It all seems very subjective. In Monet's case, I may agree with your point of view because there are already many links to galleries, but in lesser known artists there are usually very few links. In this example, I should point out that the 2nd link (intermonet.com) is broken, and the 4th link (http://www.monetpainting.net/) sells monet posters on allposters.net. I believe that my site has relevant content in context with the biographies, and I think that it might fit in WP:ELYES point 3. I really would like to contribute to these articles, but if you feel that the site's content is redundant, I will not add the links. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Npalmeirim (talkcontribs) 16:20, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Shameless (U.S. TV series) is a remake of Shameless (UK TV series). I guess, that causes the confusion. The information in both country-specific versions seems to be correct on a quick glance. GermanJoe (talk) 15:35, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Interesting Behavior

Hi Folks, this page history has some interesting behavior going on. I understand that the Help Page is more for queries than for general comments, but I wasn't quite sure where else to share this... so I figured here at least I could see what the Help Desk crowd had to say about this. In any case, one or more people have been making pairs of edits for 3 years on this page, always leaving the page intact after the second edit. Is there anything more to this then just someone amusing themselves? Noah 20:07, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see you gave them a level 1 edit test warning. I added a level 2 since they do so much of it. Let's see where it goes; I suppose they could eventually be given a temp block if it continues, for waste of Wikipedia computer resources. ―Mandruss  20:15, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh now I noticed that they have used multiple IPs. In that case, I'm at a loss; doesn't seem practical to template all of them. More wisdom will be along shortly. ―Mandruss  20:19, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, most all of the edits are from the 67.226.0.0/17 range which appears to be the Houston Community College System. Some maybe some bored teacher or IT person (a student likely wouldn't be there for three years, but you never know). In any case, pretty harmless as far as test/disruptive edits go. Mostly I was just impressed at the length of time the person had kept it up. Noah 20:51, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, maybe some instructor is teaching intro to Wikipedia editing and never heard of a sandbox? I'm not well-versed enough in the technical aspects to know whether that would produce these results; i.e., wouldn't all the computers in the classroom go through one cable modem and therefore one IP address? ―Mandruss  20:56, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think the range is too wide for an IP range block. ―Mandruss  21:00, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How can I download the article (to save/read in iBooks) as a PDF on my iPad? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ctowngary (talkcontribs) 22:09, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There may be a better way but one way to do this is 1) scroll down on the Wikipedia page (in Safari on your iPad), 2) select "Desktop" intead of mobile, 3) then click the standard Download PDF link in the left-hand menu. I just tried this and was able to download a page as a PDF into iBooks. Noah 22:34, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    It was unintentional, my apologies. Darrell_Greenwood (talk) 01:22, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Darrell Greenwood: Sorry, I should have explained better. You have some sort of automatic spell-checking going on in your browser, and it keeps changing the CSS property color: to colour: in my signature, every time you edit this thread. Since colour: is not a supported CSS property (at least on this site), that changes the appearance of my signature. If you don't find a way to turn off this spell-checking, you're going to have a lot of people mad at you. Basically, most of those who use the color: property in their signatures, in talk threads that you edit. ―Mandruss  01:26, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you need help with turning that off, start a thread at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing. ―Mandruss  01:29, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Biased Decision

I've used Wikipedia on and off for years but will no longer be doing so. Your decision in the Gamergate controversy and choosing to silence women's voices and ignore women's concerns and issues that are a central part of GamerGate (sorry, but the ethics in journalism cover was bullshit, and anyone with half a brain can see that) has made it clear that Wikipedia can not be trusted to give a complete and open account of events and issues.

As I noted above, I've used Wikipedia for years, but have always wondered if that was wise, even when footnotes became required. This decision has answered that question and made my decision of whether or not to continue using and supporting it an any easy choice: No.

I'm sorry you're unhappy with Wikipedia. But this is the Help Desk, which, as stated at the top of the page, is for questions about how to use and edit Wikipedia. We give some leeway on that, but I'm not sure that goes as far as parting shots at the project. I'm not certain enough to do it myself, but I wouldn't object if someone more experienced elected to remove this thread. Best of luck to you. ―Mandruss  01:17, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Delete/remove or correct inaccurate pages

How do we remove inaccurate pages there's no such thing as Debolt, Nebraska and id like to remove the page and there's a page on Facebook that's generated by Wikipedia says its a city in Alberta Canada but the location on the Facebook page is showing in Omaha Nebraska making our posts show inaccurate location that it's posted or fix it cause it shouldn't be showing in Omaha Nebraska or remove any pages generated by Wikipedia that's on Facebook you need to do www.facebook.com/pages/Debolt/115546631792342 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anonymous72530 (talkcontribs) 04:31, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

USGS shows there is such a place Feature Detail Report for: Debolt Mlpearc (open channel) 04:35, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And Wikipedia has many small articles about places that are too small to appear in online mapping tools such as Google Maps, or even no longer exist. So it's inaccurate to say that the page is inaccurate. The geo coordinates given on the page are correct per the above-linked GNIS page, pointing to the area that is now North Omaha. There is a Debolt, Alberta, there is also a Wikipedia article about it, and that article's coordinates are also correct. It appears that Facebook is confusing the two articles or something, and Wikipedia has no control over what Facebook does with the information in its articles. ―Mandruss  05:05, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The Facebook page you linked is for Debolt, Nebraska, not Debolt, Alberta. It says Location Nebraska at the top. Therefore it would logically have a map showing the location of Debolt, Nebraska, not Debolt, Alberta. Under "Places in Debolt" on that page is a link to "Debolt, Ab" - along with places that are in the Omaha area. Apparently that entry should not be there, and again we have no control over Facebook content. ―Mandruss  05:45, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Fair Partisans?

Now, I've been editing Wikipedia for a long time, but I've always wondered this:

What is Wikipedia's stance on partisans?

I've read WP:REP in the past, but I've always wondered what the general community thinks of this.

(Note that the partisans that I speak of are the ones that follow the rules for the most part, but do still obfuscate information that they find unfavourable from their own edits.)

If a partisan were to edit Wikipedia within the general rules, but yet obfuscate some information or otherwise "shadow" an article, and then in the long term the information that they added ended up being reworked by future editors so that the page turned out quite well balanced, could the presence of such a person truly be seen as a problem? If the partisan added legitimate information, and then the pages were later improved upon by others to add the information that they had left out, then wouldn't "the (first-version-writing) partisan" just be another step in the life of the general creation and improvement of an article? Tharthandorf Aquanashi (talk) 04:56, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My take is that you're outside the scope of Help Desk, which is pretty much just for how-to type things. I would suggest Wikipedia:Neutral point of view/Noticeboard, or perhaps one of the other noticeboards listed at Wikipedia:Noticeboards. ―Mandruss  05:28, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Can people with a point-of-view edit wikipedia? Yes, definitely. Is it helpful if people pointedly break the neutral point of view guidelines? Not really. If you really want to contribute but you feel that you are so partisan that it will get in the way of creating a balanced article, then one thing you can to is suggest changes on the Talk page for an article and see what the group of contributors thinks of those suggestions. Здравствуйте, Сергей. Unless there is an explicit statement that the picture has been placed in the public domain, or licensed under a licence such WP:CC-BY-SA, a picture from a ten-year old book will be in copyright, and may not be used in English Wikipedia. (The rules may be different in ru.wikipedia, I don't know). If the University owns the copyright, then it could choose to license the pictures, but it is not enough for them to give permission to use them on Wikipedia, they must follow the procedure to license them appropriately (which will allow anybody to use them for any purpose): see donating copyright materials. --ColinFine (talk) 19:08, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Сергей specifically with regards to your question about images, the rules are extremely tight and strict for good reason, to avoid legal issues with copyright. If you don't know the owner of the pictures and can't find a license then almost certainly it cannot be used on wikipedia. See WP:IUP for much more detail about this.
