Cherukupalli is an administrative mandal and village panchayat under Tenali Revenue Division in Guntur District of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The administrative seat of this mandal is located at Cherukupalli village. Cherukupalle Mandal is bounded by by Nagaram Mandal towards South , Amruthalur Mandal towards North , Pittalavanipalem Mandal towards South , Bhattiprolu Mandal towards East . Ponnur, Repalle , Tenali , Bapatla are the nearby Cities to Cherukupalli.
It is located along National Highway 214A (India). Arumbaka minor panchayat is the main village and Cherukupalli is still written as Arumbaka Sivaru Cherukupalli (Cherukupalli H/o Arumbaka) in Revenue and Census records.[2] It has an area of 97 Sq.km[3]
History
The near by Bhattiprolu village (10 km from Cherukupalli headquarters) has a Buddhist Stupa of 2000 years old suggesting the possibility of human habitations in this place 2000 years ago.
During freedom struggle, Gandhiji visited the mandal in 1937. An ashramam to his memory was established in Gudavalli village and functions till date. Sri Gollapudi Sita Rama Shastri (Swami Sitaram) established Vinaya Ashramam in Kavuru Village. During Quit India movement, he led a group of people who set fire to Sub Registrar office at Cherukupalli.[4] He also undertook fast unto death for creation of seperate Andhra state from his ashram at Kavuru, but gave up his 35 day fast under the advice from Vinobha Bhave.[5]
On May 29, 1975 a group of naxalites attacked Cherukupalli police station and decamped with police weapons - a first in the state's history.[6] This gave jolt to the police, who until then considered naxalites were confined only to the forests.
Prominent Telugu poet Tummala Seetarama Murthy who composed works like "Rastra ganamu", "Atmarpanamu" was born in Kavuru village of this mandal. He was awarded Sahitya Academy award in 1969.
The area used to be part of Tenali Taluka and later came under newly formed Repalle Taluka from 1909. Again in 1981-82 this mandal came under Pallapatla taluka after bifurcation of Repalle Taluka. Cherukupalli mandal came in to existence from 25-5-1985 as per govt. decision to form new administrative units called mandals and bring administration closer to people.[3]
Demographics
Cherukupalli mandal consist 10 revenue villages, 16 panchayats and 61 habitations.[7] According to 2011 census by Govt of India, Cherukupalli mandal has a population of 60,385 persons and has a literacy rate of 66.88%.[8] It has density of 623 persons per Sq.km and sex ratio of 1023 females per 1000 males.

Climate
The mandal receives rainfall from South-West monsoon in the months of June-Sept. The average annual rainfall is 875 mm.[3]

Economy
The major occupation of people is agriculture. 80% of geographical area (7,800 hectares) is under cultivation and 80% of cropped area is sown more than once.Paddy is mainly grown in Kharif season. Black gram, Green Gram, Maize are grown in Rabi season. Some families practise jasmine and vegetable cultivation on small scale. The mandal comes under Repalle APMC (Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee) area. It has 2 APMC sub-yards at Ponnapalli and Gudavalli and a check post at Cherukupalli centre.
The Krishna West Side Channel from Prakasam Barrage, Vijayawada meets the irrigation needs of the people.More than 90% of area under Kharif cultivation is canal irrigated. In rabi, approximately 30% of area receives canal water.[3] The N.G. Ranga Krishi Vignan Kendra, Vinayashramam, Kavuru is agriculture knowledge dissemination centre in near by locality
No Major or minor minerals avaliable in the mandal. No major industries are located in this mandal. Twenty rice mills and a few saw mills operate in the mandal. Weaving activity is practised on small scale in Rajavolu village. A rural BPO used to operate in Kavuru village and later got closed down.
The mandal is 100% electrified and has 2 electric sub-stations
Education
66 Anganwadi Centres (AWC) operate in the mandal providing nutrition and pre-school education. The mandal has some of the oldest and famous govt schools like Muniwamy Nadiu ZP school, Gudavalli established in 1944, Cherukupalli ZPH school, Kavuru ZPH school. A Govt BC Boys welfare hostel is located at Gullapalli. Apart from this 1 SC boys hostel and 1 SC girls hostel also operate in the mandal. As of Sept, 2012 the various schools in the mandal as per govt. are as follows.

However, this is gross under estimate of private un-aided schools in the mandal. Various private schools like Rosebuds, Vanaja Chandra, St. Joseph etc provide education in English medium. Several unrecognised schools also operate in the mandal.

Cherukuaplli is hub of hospitals for people in near by mandals. Apart from 2 Govt Primary Health Centres (PHC) at Cherukupalli and Kanagala, the mandals has various private hospitals like

Shri. Dr. Kodali Paparao gaaru has been serving the mandal population for more than half century and was of earliest medical practitioners in the mandal[13]
Specialists from Tenali and Vijayawada have their own hospitals or have tie ups with some of the hospitals for providing specialist care to the people in near by areas.
The mandal has Govt veterinary hospitals at Cherukupalli and Gudavalli.

Major entertainment is through movie theatres all of which are located in and around mandal head quarters.

Financial Institutions
The mandal is well served by Nationalised banks like State Bank of India, State Bank of Hyderabad, Andhra Bank, Bank of India. Some of the private sector banks are in process of consolidating in the mandal.
3 Primary Agricultural Credit Co-operative Societies are active in the mandal. But they are suffering from the same troubles that co-operative societies everywhere are undergoing like non-recovery of loans etc.
Fairs and Festivals
The Maha Siva Ratri Jatara of Bala Koteswara Swamy temple in near by Govada village is biggest crowd puller. Every village has their own local gods/ goddesses whose jataras/ possessions are carried out annually.
There is also a local vegitables market (fair) held directly by farmers on every Wednesday in Gudavalli, Thursday in Gullapalli and on every Saturday in Cherukupalli.
Transport & Communication
Cherukupalli is approximately 48.4 kilometers of distance from its main city, Guntur and 25 km from revenue division, Tenali. Cherukupalli is very near to Ponnur which is 19 kilometers of distance, and 87 km of distance from its State capital, Amaravathi.
By Air
The nearest airport is at Gannavaram which is at 60 km from this place. From there one has to come to Vijayawada to catch a bus to reach this mandal.
By Train
No railway line passes through this mandal. The nearest railway station is at Bhattiprolu, 10 km from mandal headquarters which is on Guntur-Repalle railway line. The Delta fast passenger is popular train for travel to Hyderabad. Ponnur, Tenali and Guntur are major railway stations near to this mandal.
By Bus
The mandal is located along NH214A national highway. It is also connected to Tenali, Nizampatnam via state highway. This town is focal point for travel to nearby mandals like Nizampatnam, Amartaluru, Bhattiprolu, etc and also to bigger cities like Vijayawada, Hyderabad etc.
APSRTC operates frequent buses from Tenali and Ponnur for every half an hour. Some buses from Guntur, Repalle, Bapatla, Chirala also serves this mandal. Autos also carry passengers frequently from ponnur to the mandal and also from head quarters to near by villages.
For long distance travel, APSRTC has bus services going to Hyderabad every night passing through this mandal. Morning Star Travels (Private travels) also has a daily service to Hyderabad from Gudavalli village.

The mandal has 2 Sub Post offices (S.O) at Cherukupalli (522309) and Kanagala (522259) and 14 Branch Offices. It has 2 telephone exchanges
Government and politics
Cherukupalli mandal comes under Baptla Parliamentary constituency. At present it is represented by Malyadri Sriram (TDP). Similarly it falls under Repalle assembly constituency which is being represented by Anagani Satya Prasad (TDP).
Cherukupalli mandal comes under Cherukupalli Mandal Parishad (local - self govt body) established under AP Panchayati Raj act, 1994. The Mandal Parishad has 17 MPTC (Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies) seats under it. The mandal elects one member to Guntur ZIlla Parishad (ZP).
