    article about a company

    Hello, I'd like to write a article about a web hosting company "HostCram". — Preceding unsigned comment added by SPUZE (talkcontribs) 01:56, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    First, remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia not a business directory. Start by reading WP:YFA on how to write an article, including how to determine if the subject is notable, then use the article wizard there to create a draft for review. Writing an article is not an easy task for a newcomer, so you might want to start by improving existing articles instead. RudolfRed (talk) 02:03, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    To that I would add: if by any chance you, SPUZE, have any connection with HostCram, you should first read WP:COI, WP:PAID, and WP:NOTPROMO, and comply with any conditions that might apply to you and to the proposed article. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230,195} 90.220.212.173 (talk) 10:46, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Creating a new wikipedia page

    Cochranekayak, while you're at it, you could give a look to how to create your first article too. Thanks, Lourdes 05:57, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Update BOT?

    I've been trying to find the "update" BOT, that updates each WikiProject by doing it manually. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Adamdaley (talk) 06:54, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Article on Law Firm

    Dear,

    Similar to all large law firms which are our competitors our law firm would like to have its profile on Wikipedia. We understand that wikipedias purposes is not marketing but information. At same time, ALL large law firms have profiles in wikipedia that evidence their history, size, offices, etc. We have tried to develop similar profile but it was blocked by wikipedia. What we want is just same as all other law firms. Please help us achieve that.

    Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2804:18:500B:24AB:E03D:8F01:6330:2E09 (talk) 09:00, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Welcome to Wikipedia. I can assume that you have a conflict of interest with this law firm, so please read WP:COI and make sure that you properly disclose your conflict of interest. Since you are an IP address, you are currently not allowed to create articles. If you want to make an article, please read WP:YFA and check out WP:AFC. Also, please do not create a WP:SPAM article that is solely promotional. Also, make sure to sign your posts using four tides, or ~~~~. Thanks. EMachine03 (talk) 13:25, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello, IP user. I'm going to give you some corrections to your language which may seem nit-picky, but I think will help you understand what is going on. First, Wikipedia does not contain profiles: it contains articles. There are several differences, but I think the principal one is that Wikipedia has little interest in what a subject says about themselves, and absolutely no interest in how they wish to be presented. Linked with that is the second point, that nobody - no person, no organisation, nothing - has an article on Wikipedia. Many people and organisations are the subject of articles in Wikipedia. What Wikipedia articles do is to summarise what people unconnected with the subject have chosen to publish about the subject. --ColinFine (talk) 21:40, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    I will add further that anonymous efforts to create a "profile" for your company may well be interpreted and responded to on the assumption that you are attempting to commit marketing and promotion, especially since doing so without openly disclosing your conflict of interest is a violation of our terms of service. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:52, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Formatting problem

    Hello, how can I fix the formatting for the heading of the "A" section here?--Dormius (talk) 16:51, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hey Dormius. I'm not sure why it was displaying like that, but I used a different template for the columns and it seems to have fixed it. GMGtalk 16:55, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Now, that was fast – thank you so much! Of course, for future reference it would be useful to know also what caused the error in the first place. Maybe someone else can help us with that?--Dormius (talk) 17:00, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Hopefully someone else can help clarify. But personally, for columns, I find it's usually safer to use {{div col|colwidth=30em}} at the start and {{div col end}} at the end, since it seems to overall have less problems interacting with other templates, presumably because everything isn't in braces: {{ }} GMGtalk 17:05, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    @GreenMeansGo: Thanks once more. I'm afraid though I didn't quite get the part "because everything isn't in braces"...--Dormius (talk) 17:10, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    I... I'm not really that tech savvy, but with the template that was being used before it ends up looking like this:

    {{columns-list|colwidth=20em|

    • Stuff
    • Stuff
    • Stuff

    }}

    So the "stuff" is inbetween the opening of the template {{ and the closing of the template }} But when you use the other one, the start and the end both have an opening and a closing, so I've found it tends to have less problems, especially with other templates. So it would look like this:

    {{div col|colwidth=30em}}

    • Stuff
    • Stuff
    • Stuff

    {{div col end}}

    Hopefully this explains more than it confuses. I'm not totally sure why it works that way. I just know that I end up with less wonky formatting with the second one. GMGtalk 17:18, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    With complicated wikitext it often solves a problem to have separate start and end templates with the middle being wikitext by itself and not a parameter to any template. A simplified version of the reported example:
    {{columns-list|
    === A ===
    * Abraham
    }}

    It produces:

    === A ===
    • Abraham
    The problem is that section heading code ==...== must be at the start of a line in the wikitext produced by a page. It was at the start of a line in the source but not in the code produced by {{columns-list}} which strips leading whitespace and inserts a div before the remaining part, leading to this:
    <div class="div-col columns column-count column-count-2" style="-moz-column-count: 2; -webkit-column-count: 2; column-count: 2;   ">=== A ===
    * Abraham</div>

    A possible fix would be to insert something non-displayed before the section heading, e.g.:
    {{columns-list|
    <nowiki />
    === A ===
    * Abraham
    }}

    This time {{columns-list}} will only strip the newline before nowiki and not the one before the section heading. But there are other dangers. The fix [1] by GreenMeansGo is safer. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:58, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Spacing

    Hello, how come the spacing before "In Zitaten wird sic in eckige Klammern gesetzt…" is smaller than in the subsequent paragraph beginning with "Die so gekennzeichnete Besonderheit" here? (Nobody has answered in German WP, so I thought I might as well ask here.) Best regards--Dormius (talk) 17:14, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Are you viewing on mobile? GMGtalk 17:19, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi. No, I'm using a regular desktop PC. Best--Dormius (talk) 17:38, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Because the line starting "Die so" is part of the text belonging to the doubly-indented "um eine Besonderheit" item.
    The source text includes <br/><!-- [two crlfs here] -->, which has made it harder than usual to follow what's happening there. Maproom (talk) 18:01, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    @Maproom: Thank you! But what exactly does a double indention have to do with the line spacing? Aren't those two different animals? And shouldn't that be considered to get fixed with respect to a harmonious typeface / layout?--Dormius (talk) 20:37, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, they're two different animals. The use of the "<br/> commented-off linefeeds" trick conceals the fact that, despite the appearance of the source code and the rendered text, "Die so" is in the same paragraph as "um eine Besonderheit" and so has the same indentation. Maproom (talk) 20:52, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Are other Wikipedia articles acceptable sources?

    The title says it all. YuriGagrin12 (talk) 18:45, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hey YuriGagrin12. Article can, and should link to other articles using internal links. However, Wikipedia is user generated, and like other user generated sites like IMDB, internet forums, and nearly all blogs, it is not appropriate for use as a source. Having said that, if there is a statement on another Wikipedia article that is supported by a source which meets our standards for reliability, then you can use that source on another article to support a similar statement. GMGtalk 18:55, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Okay @GreenMeansGo: Thanks.
    This may not be all that helpful, but maybe also consider WP:CIRCULAR. Jjjjjjdddddd (talk) 11:11, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Referencing people.

    Dear Wikipedia, I deleted a reference by the Guardian as it was incorrect, and wanted to reference myself. I am Matthew Pilkington the youngest son of Godfrey Pilkington and I am referencing myself in reference to how he died.

    How do I do that? First hand references? It can be verified by my brother Andrew or my 2 sisters, Clarissa and Penny. Pilk64 (talk) 18:51, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hey Pilk64. In order for content to be verifiable, it needs to be supported by published sources that meet our standards for reliability. Personal experiences cannot be verified by readers, and constitute original research, which isn't allowed. GMGtalk 18:57, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    SUBPAGES

    If you mean executable PHP, the answer is no. If you simply want to display some code, you can use a subpage in you user space and <source> tag. Ruslik_Zero 20:00, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Wikipedia supports pages written in Lua. You can read more about it here: Wikipedia:Lua – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 20:10, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    See Wikipedia:User pages for what you may have in userspace. It should serve a purpose for Wikipedia, e.g. display the code of a bot. The only languages which can run from userspace are JavaScript, CSS and normal wikitext. Lua can only run from the Module namespace. It might be possible to make a script in JavaScript which reads a user subpage and tries to interpret it as a program in another language, but I certainly don't recommend that. references spread over 2 sections

    Hi, im pretty sure that there should be just one section listing all references on an article, and not 2. In this article, Political status of Taiwan, where it says Position of other countries and international organizations, i found out that for some reason there's a completly separate references section about halfway through from the one at the bottom of the page. I check the wikitext and i found nothing wrong, also theres a site error for taipeitimes.com that says that it was invoked but never defined, but i found nothing wrong. can somebody fix it and/or tell me why does it happen? thanks. NASA's Cultural Resources Center hosts a lot of pictures online. I am specifically interested in ones about the (ghost) town of Gainesville, Mississippi. My question is: What is the copyright of these pictures, and are they okay to post to a Wikipedia article with correct attribution? I don't pretend to be an expert, or even very knowledgeable, about WP policies on such things, so I am asking for some guidance. Here is a link to the NASA site that hosts the pictures I am interested in: [2] Ditch 23:42, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    The subject of Electricity

    Hi, I am Drycroft4. I have attempted to edit the Wiki article "electricity" a number of times but as you can see, it gets reversed by Wtshymanski. Can you get some "expert" to resolve (or write a compromise) to this important issue? What I have written is correct (I have checked with experts), clear, and written for wiki-readers. You can see the comments on the talk page of Wtshymanski, but in all honesty, what he says is just not correct (or explained well) information. It conveys little information (is circular logic - - such as water is wet) and if I was a person looking up electricity, what Wtshymanski wrote would do nothing but confuse me. Try to help. Thanks, Drycroft4 (talk) 06:24, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello Drycroft4. In my opinion, Wtshymanski has given a fair reasoning to you for reverting your additions, which the editor apparently found obtusely worded. You should also read our no original research and verifiability policies – it's not about what experts have told you, it's all about which all reliable sources have documented the material you're trying to add. Nevertheless, in case you disagree, you can start a discussion at Talk:Electricity listing out the changes you would wish to make to the article, and proceed as per consensus visible in the talk page discussions. Thanks, Lourdes 06:39, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello, Drycroft4. Wikipedia does not resolve content disputes by appeal to experts, but by consensus in applying Wikipedia's principle to material from reliable sources. When the parties cannot reach a consensus, WP:Dispute resolution explains the steps to follow. --ColinFine (talk) 10:54, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    If the talk page of the individual article doesn't get any response, it may be worth trying the talk page of any Wikipedia project to which the article relates. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:24, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Convention re non graduating alumni Comment

    What is our convention regarding alumni of a college? Alumni often means graduate, but it does include student of, so I think it is acceptable to identify someone as an alumni of a school, even if they did not graduate. However, someone wrote to Wikimedia noting that Monmouth_College identifies James Stockdale  as James Stockdalle 46, and in a caption as “Vice Adm. James Stockdale, Class of 1946 “ which leaves the impression that he was a 1946 grad. He was not. He was briefly at Monmouth, but he was at the Naval Academy in 1943, so maybe when he was at Monmouth he was in the class of 1946, but I think listing him as 1946 and class of 1946 is misleading, at best. I checked the MOS, but did not see any guidance.--S Philbrick(Talk) 22:21, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    The longstanding convention at WP:ALUMNI is that attendance alone makes you an alumnus. I think the problem here is using a single year and that it should be a range, or a fuller description, and not the shorthand "class of", which, when it's not being vague generally refers to actually having graduated. This is such an obscure topic I don't think you'll find any guideline. But I'd agree if he wasn't there in 1946 he shouldn't have that date beside his name. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:58, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Dear Fellow Wikipedians... I am in need of desperate help. First of all, User:David Biddulph said that I was given a warning that part of the Geography section that I edited on the article of Mendoza, Texas was not sourced. Will someone please look over my edit and tell me what I did not source? I want to make sure that the geography section of the article remains stable. I do not want to edit on there anymore, and I am getting tired of editing the same source over and over again on the article. Also, I went to www.hometownlocator.com and looked up Mendoza, Temple Terrace, Florida on there, and the pushpin points to a house when you scroll into the map, and a house is not a community. It doesn't exist, but I don't have a source to back up my claim that Mendoza, Texas is the only populated place with this name nationwide. Will someone please look this up on this website and tell me if I can add this to the article?

    In the article of Bethel, Anderson County, Texas, I want to paraphrase what I wrote on the History section of the article to make it not seem so long. I also want to do the same for the History section in the article of Blackfoot, Texas. I have read WP:Close paraphrasing and I want to paraphrase this section. Will someone please look over what I wrote on Bethel, Anderson County, Texas and tell me how I should paraphrase this section? Also, will someone please go to Blackfoot, Texas on the Handbook of Texas online and tell me how to paraphrase that into the History section of the article?

    Also, User:Magnolia677 is not treating me nicely. I had told this user that I had asked them three times to show me how to use a source as a repeated citation. The first time I contacted this user about this, all the user said was "Hometownlocator.com and GreatSchools are not great sources. Often they mirror information from Wikipedia." Then the user told me that the National Center for Education Statistics was a good source for school data, and that the Handbook of Texas is also a good source. I already know it is a good source, I have seen it on many articles regarding Texas. Then the user gave me a link to WP:USCITIES and said that excessive geographic data about distances to a bunch of places doesn't add a lot to the article. The user did not tell me how to use a repeated citation. I contacted the same user a second time, and again, they did not show me how to use repeated citations. Even the third time, they did not show me how to use a repeated citation. User:Nick Moyes gave me a way to use the Handbook of Texas as a repeated citation, and it worked, and I want to thank him for that, since it worked successfully. Then User:Magnolia677 showed me how to use repeated citations. Even User:John from Idegon had said that what this user gave me for repeated citations looked complicated, and he's right. Then the user had to lay into me that I was not following their help, but I don't think this user even read, understood or even cared what User:John from Idegon wrote that what they gave me seemed complicated for a new user like me. I feel like this user is bullying me, saying I can't edit. Yes, the user said they weren't a very good tutor, but then they left me a message telling me to stop posting messages onto their talk page! How rude! I am not making ANY negative comments about this user, but this user is not being nice to me AT ALL! I just hope that what I wrote doesn't cause User:Magnolia677 to block me from editing Wikipedia, but what I am saying is total truth! I will not put up with it anymore! I am trying to tell this user to read what I write and to fully understand it, and think about what they wrote! Their user page says the user is polite, but I think this user is cyberbullying me, and I will not handle it anymore!

    Lastly, will someone show me how to use copyright so that it doesn't look like I plagiarized what I wrote on Wikipedia?

    Thank you for taking the time to read this message. Please leave me a message that is really helpful, and I can't wait to hear back from someone! Colman2000 (talk) 23:26, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Colman2000, stop pinging me. There is nothing in the extremely long message you left above that concerns me; there was nothing in the overly long equally whining message you left on Magnolia's talk a couple days ago that concerned me either. Frankly, I do not blame Magnolia for asking you not to post on his talk. No one here has the time to read your soliloquies. We're all volunteers. We are here to create an encyclopedia, not discuss your feelings. Short version: You have a link to the The Teahouse on your talk. Take your questions there. Ask your questions there and omit all the bull. And listen to the answers you are given. No one is going to hold your hand or do your work for you. It's up to you to learn. If you go around putting people down for trying to help you in an ineffective manner, the only result you will get is people won't help you. John from Idegon (talk) 00:24, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    John from Idegon is right to some extent. Except that I am concerned you might be making unfounded accusations against another editor, and that's not ok. You might wish to reassess your comments, and remove them. Or consider if you really have ground for taking a complaint to WP:ANI. (Strike them out if not, please) I was going to look back through your talk page and see if there was any basis to that accusation. (I suspected it was just a case of you being an inexperienced editor not appreciating the guidance you were given.) But I see you've rather foolishly chosen to blank your talk page, so now I can't be bothered to wade through old deleted edits to work out who's said or did what. John is right in some respects - you do have to work stuff out for yourself, and call for help only when you're really stuck. Might I respectfully suggest that you consider working on editing other articles for a while, gradually learning the ways of editing and engaging to best effect. In 2012, Menards Hardware store was fined $750,000 just for not hiring African Americans in their management. People do not have to change their sex to match their gender! Society doesn't define you. You or we individually tell society who we are from the inside outward! Stop objectifying gender by incorrectly nursing sex parts as who a person isn't. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:6000:B201:BD00:3155:CD9D:A074:DD47 (talk) 06:06, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello, IP editor. Wikipedia is not a platform for advocacy or a place to right great wrongs. It is a neutrally written encyclopedia. There are countless other websites where you can post your opinions. Facebook and Twitter are just the best known of them. You have strong opinions and so do I. Neither one of us is allowed to add our personal opinions to Wikipedia articles. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:26, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    BOTS & IPs & LOGIN

    I know this is slightly embarrassing, but how do you create a bot on Wikipedia? I'd be really glad if I knew how to create them. And please leave a message on my talk page.

    PS:I am the same person as Special:Contributions/2.50.114.206, Special:Contributions/2.50.218.197, and Special:Contributions/92.96.94.152, so I do not know why my IP address keeps changing. If you know why, email me at my talk page (Don't forget to respond here for all my questions.).

    Glad if I knew, 92.96.170.165talk • Time email was left on page: 07:00, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Please respond after this line in the appropriate spaces given.

    I'll reply here, rather than on the talk page of one of your variable IP addresses. You can find out about bots at WP:Bots, and you can find out about IP address assignment at IP address#IP address assignment. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:37, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    If you are User:Prahlad balaji it would avoid confusion if you were to edit while logged in. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:44, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    I heard you, but Prahlad balaji is a completely different addrss from this. Yes, I admit that this person is the same. But every December my family goes to the UAE for vacation. So my IP changes and I cannot login as Prahlad balaji. Even worse, my UAE computer does NOT have a password; thus, HOW can I log in? Please reply to this question. Thankfully, 92.96.170.165 (talk) 17:25, 23 December 2017 (UTC). ☺[reply]

    Unless I'm missing something, if you're able to edit Wikipedia using whichever IP address you're using, then you should be able to click on the Special:UserLogin button and log into your user account. Your UAE computer not having a password does not seem any valid reason for you to not be able to click on Special:UserLogin. Like I said, am I missing something of your query here? Thanks, Lourdes 17:43, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Very nice. BUT, remember trying a taste of your own medicine. The page asks me for my PASSWORD! Now what can I do? @ User:Lourdes, from 92.96.170.165 (talk) 18:09, 23 December 2017 (UTC). Please reply.[reply]

    Well, at this point, you are supposed to enter your account's password. If you've forgotten the password, then click on the Special:PasswordReset reset link to recover the password. I would also gently nudge you to not provide personal details anywhere on Wikipedia – and please also read an essay giving guidance for younger editors and how not to be perceived as a troll. Netflix: A Wikipedia mirror? Or vice versa?

    I notice a lot of plot summaries on several Parenthood episode articles (Parenthood (season 1), Parenthood (season 2), etc) are the same as what Netflix uses to describe the episodes. Anyone know who's copying who here? (I've been trying to change what I can, but I'd like to know if Netflix is being a Wikipedia mirror, before I put on a copyright issue tag.) Thanks for reading. -- Bwefler (talk) 07:04, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello Bwefler, while other editors may have more precise answers, I suspect Netflix is liberally using Wikipedia material. Your query is also quite coincidentally made one day after they've removed relevant Wikipedia links from many of their pages. For example, if you see the Netflix description page of Death Note and compare it with yesterday's Google archive of the same page, you'll notice that they've removed the line "Learn More: Wikipedia, IMDb". Hope this helps, thanks and happy holidays. Lourdes 17:28, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Help:Cite errors/Cite error references no text

    I edited the 'History' of this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedenskirche_(Hillbrow) In so doing I lost all the links I had incorporated in my narrative. Being an octogenarian and not well versed in computer handling I am at a loss now to get the links back. ( to think I had put them into the it orginally!)

    Please advise!

    I have tried to repair and improve Friedenskirche (Hillbrow). Maproom (talk) 16:21, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Please don't get discouraged: we appreciate your input. It's quite easy to make mistakes even if you are not an octogenarian. If you are unsure, you can just start a new section on the article's talk page, put your information and references in however you want and without worrying too much about proper formatting, and then ask for help in moving your contribution into the article. Another nice trick is to your new work into a new section in your own talk page or in a draft sub-page of your user page, play with it there until you like it, and then copy and paste it into the target article. This works because it keeps you from feeling pressure to get it right immediately, so you don't feel that you must revert yourself to fix a mistake in the live article. -Arch dude (talk) 21:03, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Blockfolio page "speedy deleted" but how can I modify what I first wrote? Can't find history. Please advise.

    Blockfolio / Blockfolio.com is a new mobile app that tracks cryptocurrencies (a very important issue nowadays). It's a top 20 finance app in the GooglePlay store and deserves a wikipedia page. I included the controversy in the news about privacy protections so it wasn't unambiguously promotional. Please advise. Thanks and good karma to you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Corpania (talkcontribs) 18:24, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Corpania, you can request the administrator who deleted the article, in this case Jimfbleak. Thanks, Lourdes 18:38, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello, Corpania. I am an administrator and could view the deleted article. It was completely unreferenced and highly promotional, and contained several unacceptable external links. There was nothing worthy of an encyclopedia article there. If you want to try again, please start by reading and studying Your first article, and be rigorous in complying with the neutral point of view. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:09, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Lourdes, the page 'https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_administrators_willing_to_provide_copies_of_deleted_articles' suggests Jimfbleak is not the correct person to ask (and not just in the sense of chickens not making appeals to foxes) - is that interpretation not correct? Perhaps Cullen328, who is on the list, would be willing to consider an appeal for having the deleted page returned to draft space - where it can be worked on? Both Corpania & myself are new to authoring original content for Wikipedia... but we're willing to learn (just going through the tutorials now while the matter is sorted). = D idfubar (talk) 06:05, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
