Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

    April 14

My personal Bio that appears on wikipedia is factually inaccurate and I need help fixing it. Revised content appears below:

Darlene Grant, associate professor in the School of Social work and former associate dean of graduate studies with responsibility for over-site of all at graduate recruitment and admissions for the University of Texas at Austin. She joined the University of Texas in 1994.[1] She was named 2006 Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers. She teaches in the areas of social justice, clinical social work practice, and chemical dependency and recovery. Her more recent work focuses on incarcerated women and their children.[2] From 2009-2011, she took a leave of absence from the University to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cambodia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Grantdarlene1 (talkcontribs) 01:24, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for requesting assistance with this instead of directly editing this yourself. Unfortunately the additional content you have added does not have appropraite verifiable sources. In fact the first reference is based on an archived page, which is no longer on the university's website. Can you please find links to reliable sources which we can use to validate the information you request adding to the article. Thank you, Tiggerjay (talk) 04:43, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help editing the label that showed up with my subject's listing once the page was published

    Hello,

I recently wrote a biography entry that was approved and published. The problem is that the label assigned to my article is factually incorrect, and I'm not sure how to fix it since I did not write it.

The article is about Mary Johnson, American writer. Unfortunately, the label that shows up with her name when you search for "Mary Johnson" in Wikipedia is "Mary Johnson (American Writer, CEO of A Room of Her Own Foundation)". She is not the CEO, only a co-founder and a director.

How can I edit this or request a change?

Thank you for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.66.227.234 (talk) 01:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the description at Mary Johnson to say Director instead of CEO. Thanks for pointing out the error. Next time, you can be bold and fix it yourself by clicking the "edit" link at the top of the page. RudolfRed (talk) 01:49, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Broken Table

Hi. I think this table look defective -see right side-, but I'm not able to fix it. Cheers. --Ganímedes (talk) 02:00, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't look defective as so much, it looks like someone interted some extra data that was unsourced, and unencyclopedic. I will revert the table to remove that extra data and we'll see what happens. Tiggerjay (talk) 04:46, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of issues with Church maps

I have a number of issues with some of the maps for religious groups on here, most obviously Church of the Brethren, which someone really needs to look at because it has been had a major error for the last 3 years: File:Church of the Brethren map.svg

    File:Anglican C., Porvoo C., Utrecht Union.svg

And the Anglican communion map, which I have a number of issues with, ie, a number of countries served by the US Episcopal Church are colored grey when they should be blue; Nepal and the Central African Republic are blue, despite not being served by any AC affiliate that I can find; Yemen and Iraq are grey, despite another wiki map saying that they are served by the Province of Jerusalem

    File:ECJME.png

And then there is Europe, which is a whole 'nother story because the same countries are served by the Diocese of Gibraltar and the ECUSA affiliated Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe as well as having members of the Porvoo Communion and the Union of Urtrecht.

Who do I talk to about these issues and, better yet, how can I make one of these maps myself? Is it something in wikicommons?--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 02:21, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can certainly go about making a map yourself, just make sure the changes you are introducing are supported with verifiable and reliable sources. Your map doesn't have to be visually similar, but simply needs to represent the same data, with the updates you propose. If you would like to know how these specific maps were created, or to request these ones to be updated, you can reach out to their creator. By clicking on the image, you will see who uploaded the files, in this case, User:Koavf. You can reach out via their talk page, here. Tiggerjay (talk) 04:56, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But that is kind of my technical problem - how do I make new maps? Is there some kind of software I need? If I could just point and click and make different countries/states different colors and create my own key, I could easily correct these mistakes myself. Except perhaps for the egregious Brethren map.--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 05:01, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well the helpdesk deals specifically with helping users on how to use wikipedia itself, however, you appear to be asking more of a generic computer question. I can think of a dozen or so ways to create a map like that. However I will defer you over to the reference desk where you can ask questions about how to do things with your computer to make maps or such. Tiggerjay (talk) 05:06, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Resolved

When I moved Autosomal Dominant Cerebellar Ataxia to Autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia it's talk page Talk:Autosomal Dominant Cerebellar Ataxia failed to move to Talk:Autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia because Talk:Autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia already existed. The previous Autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia had been deleted as a Copyvio, but it's talk page got left behind.

    Cite error?

    Hi there,

I am writing an article – Bank of Chester County – and I'm not sure why there's a cite error; I'm copying and pasting certain formatting, though I'm unsure of how to fix it. Assistance would be greatly appreciated, sirs and madams. ;) (And frankly, I'm quite alarmed...I didn't expect Wikipedia to be this jargon-ated!)

Merci beaucoup!! Also, on the main page, I notice that the did you know section mentions that the articles shown are "Wikipedia's newest content"; would my article be considered eligible for that, and if so, where can I add it for my claim to wiki-fame? ;) You know what, I like this wiki experience... Sonoma's bridge. Sonoma's bridge (talk) 16:21, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Because the article was quite short when you began expanding it, yes I believe it's eligible, because your additions today have made it 5x larger. learning to use Wikipedia

Why is it that, when I try to practice formatting techniques such as italic or ==Elizabeth II== in the sandbox, they do not ever format as italic or as a bold headline, as they should? After I safe the page, it still looks like this: italic or ==Elizabeth II== (with the coding marks) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ellensul (talkcontribs) 17:26, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look at your tests. You accidentally "broke" the sandbox page when you removed the "-->" at the end of the coding at the top of the page. The effect was to hide everything that came after because that little character string is used to "close" a hidden section. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:52, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can an experienced editor please look at Deathstep and determine if the two cites (1 and 2) are reliable and, if they're not, remove them. I've never edited the article, but I noticed that someone added a PROD tag yesterday, which was then removed by an IP with this edit, where s/he added the two questionable cites. You'll notice that it was the edtior's first and only edit. Thanks. --76.189.111.2 (talk) 20:20, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No replies in two hours, so I removed the cites based on my own judgment. If anyone disagrees, just leave a note here and tell me why. Thanks! --76.189.111.2 (talk) 22:27, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's better if folks reply on the article's talk page instead. WP:BRD and all that. RudolfRed (talk) 00:47, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not always. The article has only had a few editors and I wanted to get a neutral opinion on the quality of those cites. That's why I came here. For the record, I am not a fan of WP:BRD because I find many editors abuse and misinterpret it. Btw, I noticed you didn't even give your opinion about the cites. --76.189.111.2 (talk) 02:43, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have no opinion on the cites. I was pointing out that discussion of changes to an article belong on that article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 19:49, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Two hours seems like nowhere near enough time to wait for "someone who cares" to see and respond to a request. I'm given to understand that there are people out there who have lives outside WP , and it seems more reasonable to wait a day or two or seven for them to reply, given the mantras of "AGF", "no time limit", and all that.
Urbandictionary is a pretty low-quality source for many things, but might be reasonable for something as subjective, variable, and cutting-edge as music genres, especially when apparently independently corroborated. I didn't recognize any of the examples given, so I'm certainly not able to render an opinion (other than feeling rather old just now ). —[AlanM1(talk)]— 12:03, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Urban Dictionary is an unreliable source, consisting of user-submitted content, with attempts at regulation by volunteer editotrs, rather like Wikipedia. The other source cited seems to be even more unreliable, as it does not even have the limited attempt at regulation that Urban Dictionary has, and allows anyone who chooses to create an account to upload anything. Neither of them is remotely suitable as a source for a Wikipedia article. JamesBWatson (talk) 12:32, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
All that being said... User_talk:A11HAV3FA113N and WP:Articles for deletion/Deathstep say allot as well. Technical 13 (talk) 15:24, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Alan, you said, "Two hours seems like nowhere near enough time to wait for "someone who cares" to see and respond to a request. I'm given to understand that there are people out there who have lives outside WP". First, putting aside your sarcasm, this isn't an individual editor's talk page; it's the help desk, which is actively monitored 24/7. So two hours, particularly when all the threads posted after it had already been quickly responded to at the time, was reasonable. More importanly, the two hours I gave was purely as a courtesy. It was all bonus time because I could have simply removed those two cites immediately, without seeking any opinions. Like most editors, I normally do not seek input on the reliability of cites. The only reason I did so in this instance is because I wasn't familiar with those two websites or how cites for an odd subject like a music genre are typically handled. And for the record, even if I had posted it on an editor's talk page, I could of course simply have looked at their contributions log to see if they edited after I posted the comment, thus knowing if they received my message. Rudolf, how often do editors start a discussion on an article's talk page simply and solely to ask if a source is reliable? Relatively speaking, I'm sure it's quite rare because it's typically unnecessary. Fortunately, a great editor/admin (JamesBWatson) subsequently assured me that removal of the cites was clearly appropriate. In fact, I wrote to James after I removed the cites just to make him aware of it; I noticed that he had previously reverted some content in the article. So, again, I was simply being courteous to the editor who added those cites, by saying to James... hey, if you disagree with my removal of the cites, please feel free to revert me. :) 76.189.111.2 (talk) 21:52, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of the article "Nino Micozzi"

I am not trying to blame anyone here, but I think that the article "Nino Micozzi" posted by me should not be deleted. I provided 7 different references and I just want to point out that Nino Micozzi (which I also know personally) is at the same level of Lelio (Les) Marino, which seems to have a Wikipedia article that provides far more less information than I provided on Nino Micozzi : Lelio Marino

Well, I don't see how that could be considered "significant". The information I provided on Nino Micozzi was rather similar to Lelio Marino (I mentioned his company, and his donations to Mitt Romney and Scott Brown's campaigns and his acquirements of apartments). Lelio Marino used to have a similar business but almost nothing is said about his biography in the article.

With having that said, how can I make sure that the page "Nino Micozzi" can remain on Wikipedia permantly? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex-bellux (talkcontribs) 22:17, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The page was deleted by User:INeverCry, with the explanation "(A7: Article about a real person, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject)". This does not say that the person is not notable, but that the article does not establish that he is notable - usually because there are not enough citations of significant mentions in reliable sources independent of the subject. I cannot see the deleted article, so I can't tell what it contained; but I suggest you ask INeverCry on his talk page User Talk:INeverCry.
As for the other article you mention: it is possible that that also should be deleted. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is never accepted as an argument of any weight.
And given that you know Micozzi, you should be aware of Wikipedia's position on editors with a conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 22:52, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Can you honestly say that an encyclopedia of general knowledge should contain an article on a local real estate investor? Would you have petitioned Encyclopedia Brittanica to include him? I went to school with a guy that ended up owning a fair amount of commercial real estate in Los Angeles and Miami, and even IPO'd a piece of his firm a few years ago. I play cards with two others that own thousands of rental properties in Los Angeles. I certainly wouldn't propose to write articles about any of them, and despite their significant egos (), I don't think any of them would propose to either. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 11:48, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was nothing wrong with the citation per se. What you did, as you can see from this diff, was to somehow add a stray set of ref tags (<ref></ref>) higher up on the page next to the section header, probably because you used the formatting button that places these tags with one click, and somehow hit it while your cursor was higher on the page. It's fixed now. The fact that you were adding cited content is great. Just note that what we really want with citations is more transparent attribution than is provided by a naked link. For example, here I changed the citation format to tell the reader who the publisher is (U.S. News & World Report) and what the link went to (Best Law Schools: Ranking of University of Arizona). By the way, the ref tags get no spacing from what they are citing "Text<ref>..." not "text <ref>". One more little tip. When you want to display some markup you are using in edit mode for example purposes, such as the citation above, you can place it in "nowiki" tags (<nowiki></nowiki>). I have done that for you here. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:11, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, WikEd has had a bug (for some time) of inserting those spaces in front of refs when using the cite template dropdown in the toolbar, which might be one reason we're seeing more of it. It would be great if that could get fixed, or one of the patrolling bots would auto-fix them. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 03:59, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    • Inserts spaces into urls
    • Inserts spaces into internal links (breaks picture links)
    • Capitalizes "some" template argument names

    Regarding Wikipedia Home Page

    Dear Sir/Ma’am

We know about Wikipedia is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization that also hosts a range of other projects (likes Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wikidata etc.)

Now-a-days or everyday even every time technology has been changing. So, we have to change according to their path. I want to say about the home page, there should be some changes like

All tools should come under "Wikitools"

In Wikitools:- Main page (Wikihome), Help, Editing (Wikiupdate), Toolbox (f_upload, pages, link, info). Similarly,

Wikilanguages: - contains all the languages. (Wikiglobe)

Wikinew: - contains innovation, research, features, May I help you (Help Portal). Note: - Wikinew is different from Wikinews.

I do not want to say that you have to accept these things but there should be change.

list of golden and silver jubilee hits of bollywood

    Sir

Till the year 2000, the benchmark for a successful film was FOR HOW MANY WEEKS THE FILM RAN; that is did the film celebrate golden jubilee or silver jubilee. I would like Wikipedia to publish such a list in consultation with TRADE GUIDE/SCREEN/FILM INFORMATION MAGAZINES; I think in TRADE GUIDE 2007 issue a list was published. It would be a great service to movie lovers if such a list is added to the page — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.99.201.95 (talk) 15:42, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not publish anything in consultation with anybody. Individual editors create and extend articles with information sourced to reliable publications. If the information you are talking about is indeed available in reliable sources, then you may certainly add it to the articles; and it might be appropriate to add it to a relevant infobox. Your mention of TRADE GUIDE 2007 is unhelpful without more information: there are hundreds of organs called "Trade Guide", some of them no doubt reliable and others not.
Your best bet is probably to post at WP:WikiProject Bollywood, and see if you can interest somebody there in your suggestion. --ColinFine (talk) 22:14, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Vandalism of the Banjo article

    Dear editors:

As a bluegrass musician, I have the article about the Banjo on my watchlist. Today an IP user, 204.219.240.15 (talk), vandalized the page. Another IP user quickly reverted the damage. I was going to leave a message on the vandal's talk page, but there is a notice there that one more incident of vandalism will lead to blocking. This is one more. However, it appears to be a school IP address, and maybe another person at the school on a different computer changed it back to prevent the blocking. I am reporting it and will leave it to someone who may know more about this situation. —Anne Delong (talk) 20:38, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Warning about huge PDF

I'm copy-editing City of Heroes#Reception, and I found a source for the citation-needed for the Computer Gaming World quote. Problem is, it's on page 71 of a 28MB scanned PDF of a magazine, which can be found here (note! it really is that big). May I give a warning about the size when I link to it in the reference, or is that not done? Ignatzmicetalk 02:19, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    I ended up using {{cite journal}}, with the parameter |format=28MB PDF. Ignatzmicetalk 03:50, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Because there isn't an electronic file format called 28MB PDF, I moved the file size info into a {{link note}} after the citation and set |format=pdf.

How should ideas be considered “significant minority views” as in WP:RS?

Currently Chinese wikipedia is warring about whether Richard Wurmbrand's view that Karl Marx is a satanist should be included in the article. I just wonder how would this kind of problem be solved in English wikipedia?--Inspector (talk) 05:17, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Without looking directly at the discussion taking place over at the Chinese WP page, generally there isn't a significant problem if an individual is quoted as making a claim about someone else, if there is reliable sources which are verifiable. There was an issue I helped out with regarding Joan Crawfords alleged bisexuality, you might find the discussion that took place insightful. Tiggerjay (talk) 05:28, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Inspector: In the early life section, there is (unsourced) content that says, "As an adolescent, he was sent to study Marxism in Moscow, but returned clandestinely the following year." Then, in the achievements and influence section, it says, "He compiled circumstantial evidence that Marx was a satanist."[1][2] Therefore, assuming it is indeed a fact that Wurmbrand studied Marxism, his view about Karl Marx would certainly be relevant and worthy of inclusion. So I'm not sure what the problem is. I also don't understand what you mean by "minority view"; it is his (the subject's) view about Marx, not a third-party view about Wumbrand. Or, are you saying that there is debate about whether Wumbrand actually claimed that Marx was a satanist?

    Article Tabernacle parameter "copyright ignored"

After I corrected the isbn number for "Sacred Monsters" (footnote 16) the CS1 note "Unknown parameter|copyright = ignored" remained. I checked the edit page text again, and the parameter |copyright = 2007 by Natan Slifkin| is present. So—why does this CS1 notation appear on the page? Thanks. --Espresso-con-pana (talk) 12:47, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The template {{cite book}} doesn't support a copyright field - what the message is telling you is that the software is ignoring what it considers to be an unknown parameter. You can get rid of the message by removing the |copyright= segment in the reference entirely. Yunshui  12:55, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not necessary to include so much publisher / distributor information. This citation –

(''retrieved 26 August 2012'')
    – can be simplified to this:
    {{Cite book |first=Natan |last=Slifkin |year=2007 |title=Sacred Monsters: Mysterious and Mythical Creatures of Scripture, Talmud and Midrash |chapter=Chapter One: Unicorns of Different Colors |pages=55-79 |isbn=9789652295811 |publisher=Zoo Torah }}
    which gives this:
Slifkin, Natan (2007). "Chapter One: Unicorns of Different Colors". Sacred Monsters: Mysterious and Mythical Creatures of Scripture, Talmud and Midrash. Zoo Torah. pp. 55–79. ISBN 9789652295811.
I isn't clear to me what the purpose of this text is: "The ''Tachash''". The google books page for the specified ISBN does not allow for preview or even snippet view. For that reason I left out this: View text at Google Books enter title of book in search window.
    Trappist the monk (talk) 13:17, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info. Good result.
Re your question purpose of text "The Tachash": I got curious, followed through, went to Google Books, entered the full title "Sacred Monsters: Mysterious and Mythical Creatures of Scripture, Talmud and Midrash". That text "The Tachash" is a subheading of the first chapter "Unicorns of Different Colors"—it appears on the table of contents. Google Books has feature "next page" at top of window displaying text, and I was able to read the whole section "The Tachash". I'm guessing, of course, but it seems like the editor who made the footnote gave us a ready means to check the source. --Espresso-con-pana (talk) 17:08, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Collapsing a navbox

How can I achieve that the navbox at the bottom of my draft here shows in collapsed state? It is transcluded as {{Number-theoretic algorithms|state=collapsed}} but appears uncollapsed on the page. Is that because the template markup contains | state = uncollapsed or is there another reason why this happens? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:05, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Short answer: Yes. Longer answer: you should be able to fix it by <noinclude.ing the | state = parameter. I think changing it to | state = {{{state<includeonly>|uncollapsed</includeonly>}}} would achieve the desired effect, but I'm not a technical whiz, so I'd recommend checking with someone who is first. It's a pretty well-transcluded template, so any changes will have to be right first time... Yunshui  13:23, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Resolved
    Short answer: yes. Longer answer: {{Number-theoretic algorithms}} calls {{Navbox}}. {{Number-theoretic algorithms}} did not have it's own {{{state}}} so it wasn't passing your |state=collapsed to {{Navbox}}. I have corrected the issue by replacing |state=uncollapsed in {{Number-theoretic algorithms}} with |state={{{state|uncollapsed}}}. Technical 13 (talk) 13:41, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Same person, two User IDs?

If one has reason to think the same person is posting to an article under two different User IDs, what should one do? Is there a procedure for checking into this sort of thing? NinaGreen (talk) 17:41, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    • WP:SPI is the process for this. Bear in mind, the onus is on the case filer to demonstrate the suspicion and provide the evidence, not on the people that man the process. --(ʞɿɐʇ) ɐuɐʞsǝp 17:44, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • Thanks. Would it be appropriate to simply ask the question on the article Talk page? One of the Users has provided not only his real name but a great deal of other personal information on his User page. The other User is using an IP address. Both recently joined Wikipedia, and both have taken an unusual interest in a very obscure point, so I have some reason for thinking that the two Users might be the same person. However I don't want to stray into anything which could be construed as attempting to 'out' the User who is posting under an IP address (I don't see how I could 'out' the other User since he's already 'outed' himself fully on his User page). Would it be permissible to simply ask on the article Talk page? NinaGreen (talk) 17:59, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Two relevant policies with regard to your concerns are WP:SOCK and WP:OUTING. 76.189.111.2 (talk) 20:01, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Having read over these policies just now, I can't see that simply asking on the Talk page whether the two users are the same would be construed as 'outing'. But before doing that, I'd really appreciate confirmation from someone that it would not be construed as 'outing' to do that. NinaGreen (talk) 20:35, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If the registered user has an associate email address, you could ask in an email. If not, the proper thing to do is simply send it to WP:SPI with the username(s) and IP you think are involved, and they can quickly using WP:CheckUser determine if there is possibly a connection or not. Technical 13 (talk) 21:05, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nina, WP:OUTING is very clear about what is and is not considered outing. And WP:SOCK is very clear on what constitutes proper and improper usage of mulitple accounts, and fully explains how to report suspected inappropriate sockpuppetry. "Give a woman a fish and you feed her for a day. Teach a woman to fish and you feed her for a lifetime." No, there is no limit to how much you can change. But material in Wikipedia is required to be neutral in tone, not promotional, not copyrighted, and referenced to reliable sources. If you look at the history of Casting Crowns, for example, you'll see that User:Walter Görlitz reverted two of your edits with the summary " Peacocking, unreferenced material. More promotional", and three more with the summary "This file may meet the criteria for speedy deletion. This file is a copyright violation because it is copyrighted and not published under a free license". Please see WP:PEACOCK and WP:COPYRIGHT for explanation of more of these terms. If you disagree with Walter's evaluation, please discuss the matter on the article's talk page or his talk page.
I also note that you say "we". Please note that it is a violation of Wikipedia's rules for several people to use the same account: if there are several of you editing, you should have individual user accounts. See WP:ROLE. --ColinFine (talk) 22:44, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thank you so much for doing that. Do you know how I might get autoconfirmed? I've been a user for years and have edited tons of articles. Thank you. Larry Grossman (talk) 02:15, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I must have been looking at something else. You should be autoconfirmed since long ago with Special:Preferences saying "Member of groups: Autoconfirmed users, Users". PrimeHunter (talk) 02:25, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, wow - I see that now! Thanks also for linking the page that explains how to move articles. Thanks to your help, my Wiki powers are growing ever stronger! lol Larry Grossman (talk) 04:15, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Very Poor Experience with Editors Bagumba and Muboshgu

I am a Padres fan and over the past months I've tried to add detail to the "Jeff Moorad" article. The article seems to have been stripped of a great amount of detail. Not sure I understand the rationale behind this? Removing the entire Community Work section seems especially strange: almost as if there were a personal campaign against Mr. Moorad by some editors... Honestly, I am done editing this article. Over the past months I've tried to add detail to the article, much of it coming from an MLB.com biography and some from more recent news articles, etc. I feel cheated as a Wikipedia user that my edits have been stripped in the name of mere technicalities. There seems to be no protection from the tyrrany of Wikipedia editors. Pretty interesting that when the community tries to get involved in editing an article, there is this harsh a response from Wikipedia editors. Of course, I understand fully: Editors Bagumba and Muboshgu have found niches here on the baseball sections of Wikipedia, and someone trying to help with the articles would take some of their power. The editors used seemingly every tactic to remove my edits, including accusations of slanting sources, etc. Yet, it seems that the editors are slanted in the very opposite direction to which they accuse me of being. Practically every edit I made would be removed and I would receive a message directing me to the "Welcome Page." I will not study the welcome page as I do not plan to spend hours on end editing Wikipedia articles, and I don't think that Jimmy Wales' intention was to have every user known every technical detail, but rather to come together and share our knowledge and create a great resource for the world. I've tried to do that and found that I haven't been able to do so.

This is not what Wikipedia has been to me, and I'm sorry that it has had to be this way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.155.80.248 (talk) 23:31, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What you call "technicalities" another editor may feel are important principles by which the project is built: verifiability, neutrality and exclusion of promotional content. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:10, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This page is for questions about using Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Humanities reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link and ask away. deleted article

hello, user Fastily deleted the article Vienna Symphonic Library a year ago. Fastily, sadly, left WP due to frustration with other users. so i cannot ask him to revive the article in my own user space so that i can have a critical look at it. can anyone help? i'm familiar with the topic and professional enough to bring it back into WP without "copyright infringement". thanks! Maximilian (talk) 12:50, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I won't be able to do this. We are not allowed to restore copyright violations. I checked to see if it was a complete copyright violation, and it isn't, but the opening section is a pure copy and paste from this site and the rest was mostly spam like, so not suitable. It would be best to start from scratch. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 13:05, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for the link to the ad-source! i can understand what you say. and yeah, i'll write the article from scratch. Maximilian (talk) 14:13, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Where to go to solicit an administrator's/experienced editor's opinion?

Hi, is there a centralized location to request an administrator or another experienced editor's opinion? Sort of like WP:AIV, but less punish-y? I've dealt with a few admins, but I don't want to swamp the ones I know. My question is basically along the lines of "Hey, these sixty edits look real sketchy, but I don't want to revert all of them without a second opinion--would you take a look and offer some input?" I know that a {{help me}} will draw some attention, but sometimes that takes a while. Thanks! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 13:30, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Help Desk is a good a place as any if it has not risen to the level where WP:ANI would be appropriate.--ukexpat (talk) 13:44, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Much obliged, thank you. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:24, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
WP:HD (You're here), WP:TH, WP:PUMP, and using {{helpme}} (Shameless self promo, for those that respond to {{helpme}} requests, I've created {{User:Technical_13/Userboxes/Help me responder}} that will show how many people are looking for help.) or {{Admin help}} would all work for what you want. Now, to the questions... Are all 60 of these edits by the same editor or to the same article? Technical 13 (talk) 13:47, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks for the swift reply! I figured I was probably in the right area, here, but wasn't certain.
Essentially I see a ton of edits from IP user 200.82.224.124 at List of Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 and elsewhere. While some of the edits could be debated as useful and good-faith, ex: inserting line breaks between credited writers, fixing incorrectly attributed writers, some of the other edits seem disruptive. For example: Why are we using italics? Not using second set of single quotes to "close" the italics formatting. Changing commas to periods, etc.
I also found the Hot Wheels episode "The Shadow Zone" online (start at 0:50). The IP user corrected the writing credit from "Ken Pontac" to "Ken Kaufman", when it should be "Ken Kuperus". IP seems to be changing writer/director surnames a lot (Michael Dowding --> Michael Robison. John Mcintyre --> John Fawcett.) But not ALL of the changes are incorrect--just many. Confused yet? Anyhow, the IP is editing across various pages, and I suspect vandalism. I reverted these 38 edits yesterday because they didn't pass the smell test, and because a rudimentary IMDb search (I know, not WP:RS) couldn't verify any of the writers/directors he's crediting. I don't want to be rash, but I do think the IP needs to be scrutinized, and I was hoping to get a more experienced set of eyes on the case. Thanks! Eliminating a redirect

A search for William Leveson takes one, via a redirect, to a disambiguation page titled William Leveson-Gower [6]. That redirect was questionable from the outset, I suspect, but now that there is an article on a William Leveson [7], can that redirect be eliminated so that the article on William Leveson can be simply titled William Leveson? At the moment a tempest in a teapot has arisen over the disambiguator in the article title, and the easiest solution would be to simply move the article to the title William Leveson, thus doing away with any need for a disambiguator as it would then be the primary article on the topic. But that can't happen until the redirect is eliminated. Can that be done? Any help with this would be much appreciated (probably by more persons than myself. :-) NinaGreen (talk) 14:30, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

While this request was pending, editor Technical 13 did something, and when I search for William Leveson now, I get this [8]. NinaGreen (talk) 16:16, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Does this mean that the article William Leveson (mercer) could now be moved to the title William Leveson, without any disambiguator? That would resolved the above-mentioned tempest in a teapot. Any help with this would be much appreciated. NinaGreen (talk) 16:34, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is still a page move request pending on the article Talk page [9] which is now superfluous. I don't know how to get rid of it, and would appreciate help with that. NinaGreen (talk) 17:09, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Titles for disambiguation pages

Is a disambiguation page supposed to be titled as such? Currently a search for Thomas Savage goes straight to a disambiguation page which is not titled as such [10], which means there can't be a primary article titled merely Thomas Savage. Can the existing disambiguation page for Thomas Savage be retitled Thomas Savage (disambiguation) to make room for a primary article merely titled Thomas Savage?
