:Your initial Section and Photo added to Orion Nebula were reverted, correctly, by user Fountains of Bryn Mawr because none of the text was referenced to any published reliable source (Wikipedia does not care about unknown individuals' opinions, whether mine, yours or any other editor's) and the text style was inappropriate for an encyclopedia, the entire added section read as if it were indirectly promoting your own photo.
:That photo, admittedly an excellent one, is welcome in Wikimedia Commons where it still resides, and might be added to one or more articles in the future by other editors, but it would be inappropriate self promotion for you yourself to do so.
:Your subsequent addition of two sentences to the lede paragraph, also reverted by Fountains, partly repeated facts already present in the lede, which should only summarise fuller text further on in the article, and it contained a grammatical error and a non-MOS use of a unit symbol. It might be appropriate to add a new section about amateur observation of the Nebula and the type of equipment needed to do so, but this would need to summarise material from published reliable sources and be correctly cited to them, rather than be one private individual's opinions (which, incidentally, I share). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.198.186.221 (talk) 04:43, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

Artists4Ceasefire, conspiracy theory added?

Hi all

I recently wrote the article Artists4Ceasefire and I'd really appreciate some help with someone reviewing a recent addition which I've reverted because it appears to be a conspiracy theory. Another editor added what appears to be Israeli government propaganda claiming the pins worn by celebrities are not calling for a ceasefire, but celebrating a lynching. This appears to be some kind of conspiracy theory and I'd really appreciate some help with understanding what the rules are around this.

Thanks very much

John Cummings (talk) 00:47, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This concern is better discussed on the talk page of the relevant article. To provide what little insight I have on the addition: There has been some discussion on the Reliable Sources noticeboard regarding the validity of the sources that were added in regards to this particular subject. If a news article is marked as "opinion" or "analysis" it probably bears scrutiny. Reconrabbit 01:44, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much Reconrabbit, I will discuss this on the talk page and will come back here to ask for help again if that doesn't work. Thanks again, John Cummings (talk) 02:47, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Am I allowed to add to a page if I have performed a live show about someone on Wikipedia?

I am not sure if I am permitted to add my show as called "The Connie Converse Universe starring Hope Levy" to the Connie Converse wiki page. Is this accepted? My show was premiered on May 20 & 21 of 2023 at the El Portal theatre in North Hollywood, ca. My show will soon be performing at the San Diego International Fringe festival AND the Hollywood Fringe festival this June 2024. I do have a profile written about me, Hope Levy and my show when I performed it on Nov. 2, 2023 at the Santa Monica Playhouse as written in the Santa Monica Daily Press as indicated in this link https://smdp.com/2023/11/02/connie-converse-rossini-django-toledo-gnr-khatchaturian/ Thank you for your help with my question. I would highly recommend you get someone other than yourself, and unrelated to the subject to add that. We tend to discourage editing articles that are closely related to yourself, as this is a conflict of interest. If you're interested in what this entails, please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. vghfr (✉ Talk) (✏ Contribs) 03:15, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

cellpadding vs. border

I have two colors that don't have enough contrast enough in a table at List of Men's Soccer Academic All-America Team Members of the Year so I am experimenting with possibly using cellpadding, but I can't find the right syntax. The closest thing I could get to work is a border.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 09:50, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Using colors in this way is discouraged for accessibility reasons (WP:COLOR); most of the other lists in this category don't provide any special team color indications (e.g., Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Year). Reconrabbit 14:06, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One could argue that COLOR actually supports presenting both team colors and team names (Ensure that color is not the only method used to communicate important information). I know that I have held conversations and told people I am a Michigan Wolverines men's basketball fan and have them talk to me about Tom Izzo being a legend. When I say they are green and we are blue, sometimes this clears things up. Some people mix up all the Michigan schools (Michigan Tech, Michigan State, Michigan, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Northern Michigan, Eastern Michigan), but if you tell them the color it is a second way to communicate the information. I have trouble keeping track of the Texas schools myself. Also all the Cal State -- XXX schools. For a conference award, where there is a limited set of schools, the issue may be different. This is an award across all divisions of schools and some schools have the exact same name from different states.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:13, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Reconrabbit, this is especially unreadable: Johnson & Wales–Denver Wildcats -- AxG /   22:22, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are arguing about something under construction. I believe with that one the background color is not properly populating. I am going to have a list of schools at the end with similar problems. I am spending time creating and revamping the Academic All-America pages. I will also be asking about specific issues at List of Baseball Academic All-America Team Members of the Year. But the vast majority of those cells have sufficient contrast.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:05, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
• User:AxG, We are discussing this at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Football Academic All-America Team Members of the Year/archive1. Here is the 2nd half of my explanation there: Further color on team colors for athletics. On WP we place a high priority on affiliating players and teams with team colors in general. E.g. every sports team has clear presentation of its official colors. This is very abnormal for business and commerce in general. Try to find official colors on pages like Interpol, United Nations or any Fortune 500 company like McDonald's or Apple Inc.. In non-athletic business, official colors are not a thing. For athletics they are. Any bio of a player who is currently affiliate with a team has all kinds of automation presenting the official colors of this automation. Thus, whereas in general WP:FL may frown on highly colored list tables, affiliation of players and team is its own genre on WP. Presumably we do this not because affiliation is "non-essential information". Presumably this is a high priority interest to our readers. This list is attempting to uphold the broad consensus on WP that in athletics affiliation is preferably presented in prose and in color.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:56, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TonyTheTiger: Regardless of the importance of colour to a particular topic, WP:ACCESSIBILITY overrides everything. I am not in favour of using background and foreground colours to impart information, even as a secondary cue. There are other ways to depict colours associated with an entity, an example of which is used in Infobox college athletics, as seen at, for example, Shawnee State Bears; the Legend inline template can be used to achieve similar effects:
Example
Team
           Shawnee State Bears
         Stevens
(That's a mock-up, and I would normally put effort in to improve alignment and presentation.) Bazza 7 (talk) 10:49, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Bazza_7 can you direct me to the relevant section of WP:ACCESSIBILITY. Currently a college athlete such as Will Tschetter or a pro athlete such as Duncan Robinson has team affiliation prominently displayed in an infobox with cell padding and with white text. What about those formats?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:35, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TonyTheTiger: As @Reconrabbit mentioned above, MOS:COLOR is pertinent; in particular its first three primary bullet points.
The two articles you refer to above have coloured headings in their infoboxes; I do not know what the purpose of the colouring is. If it's to show information about them or their respective teams, then it should also be given in text; if it's just for decoration then it's not information and need not be there at all. Bazza 7 (talk) 09:42, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Infobox basketball biography is a very widely used template. Other sports have similarly popular templates with equally prominent color usage. In general, team affiliation is considered a piece of information of extremely high encyclopedic importance. When a player is in the news regarding a trade or a signing, it is often highly contentious with edit warring and special sets of rules. Often page protection has to be invoked. We seem to have conditioned the readers to assess team affiliation with both text and color presentation of the team affiliation. This is broadly done and commonly accepted across all sports on wikipedia. Others who spend a lot of time on sports might be able to give you more "color" (semi intentional pun) on this issue.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:02, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

'User does not exist'

I am new to editing and adding new content, but have now done several edits successfully. I have an old Sandbox begun for a new entry not yet added as I dont feel ready!. I added to an existing page a few days ago (text and an image). Going back today I note my username is in red and hovering over it says 'Page does not exist' and "talk" in red says "page does not exist". The edits are live and ok, but what do these words mean. Is there something I haven't done? I am logged in when I edit. Thanks EAG54. EAG54 (talk) 14:25, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sortable tables

I am a bit confused as to why my table at 1994 College Baseball All-America Team is sortable and my table at List of Football Academic All-America Team Members of the Year are not. Both are set as class="wikitable sortable".-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:48, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sort arrows are placed in header cells so the cells must start with ! and not |. Additionally, if the cells have background color then use background-color and not background per Help:Table#Colors in tables. Otherwise the sort arrows will not be displayed. Scottish rulers

Your pages on the Scottish rulers all incorrectly show them as kings and queens of Scotland, in fact no such title ever existed or exists; the correct term is king or queen of Scots, as the people were (and are) sovereign in Scotland. I tried to edit but apparently the truth isn't regarded as helpful and it was immediately changed back.(I expect, predictably, whoever made up the entries is ignorant of the differences between the Scottish and English courts?) 2.27.20.67 (talk) 17:54, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Present some reliable secondary sources, then make your edit using those to back up your claims. You're most likely getting reverted due to lack of sourcing. vghfr (✉ Talk) (✏ Contribs) 18:00, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's a nationalist myth. Both titles were in use, just as early English kings were 'King of the English'. There is no special difference between England and Scotland other than in the minds of the nationalists. DrKay (talk) 18:02, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would be great if List of Scottish monarchs explained this - it uses the term "King of Scots" in the first line, but without explanation. Furius (talk) 18:07, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead and made this change. I have never heard this term used more commonly than "King of Scotland", hence why I also reverted the OP. Jalen Folf (talk) 19:13, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, the idea that Scottish (not sure about Pictish) monarchs were Kings/Queens of the people, not the land, is a widespread one which I, as an Englishman living in Scotland for a period, became very familiar with. I suggest that it needs to be described somewhere in Wikipedia (if it isn't already), and wikilinks inserted in other articles where appropriate. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.198.186.221 (talk) 23:05, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Arahl1: WP:MOS and its various kindred pages are very good and very extensive, but I find it easy to get bogged down in details and lose track. If you want to write a new article, take a look at several articles with similar subjects to see how they are structured. Try to find some rated as "featured article" or "good article". Avoiding white space next to a scrollbar

The wikitable in Comparison of web browsers#JavaScript support behaves helpful:
This table is wider than the centered content column which occupies about one third of my screen width. But because there is plenty of white space to the right of the content column, this table extends beyond the limits of the content column into that white space, thereby preventing a horizontal scrollbar and making all of the table visible at the same time.

But the table in the next section Comparison of web browsers#Protocol support behaves unhelpful:
It is constrained to the central content column but still wider than it, producing a horizontal scrollbar. This makes it impossible to view the whole table at once, which is annoying, according to the plenty of unused white space next to it.

Comparing the two tables, I find identical declarations in its headers: class="wikitable sortable" style="font-size: 85%; text-align: center; width: auto;" and style="width:12em" .

What is causing the different behavior of the two tables and how can I modify the second table to appear like the first one ? -- Juergen 89.245.3.28 (talk) 18:25, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Check Wikipedia led me there. Some double redirect thing going on, while an article has actual text content. Primary and Secondary Resources

I was told that court opinions are primary sources, and I need secondary resources. Can one put both primary and secondary sources? Supermario54321 (talk) 20:11, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Secondary sources are always preferred. If there are no secondary sources for some information, and it is uncontroversial factual information, and encyclopaedic in character (as opposed to trivial, or incidental to the topic being discussed) then it may be cited to a primary source.
So if the primary source gives the same information as a secondary source, there is no point in citing both. But if a primary source gave an uncontroversial detail (eg a date) that was absent from the secondary source, that could be cited to the primary source. ColinFine (talk) 20:21, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think that sometimes first-hand information is not sufficient to provide comprehensive information or complete background, so we can consider supplementing and supporting it with second-hand information.Second-hand information can be interpretation, analysis, or commentary on first-hand information, or the views and research results of other scholars and experts on the subject.
First and foremost, I think second-hand information should be a reliable and authoritative source, preferably published by experts, scholars or authorities.
When quoting second-hand information, it is advisable to provide a clear source of reference so that the reader can verify it.
Second-hand information should be a reasonable interpretation and analysis of first-hand information to help readers better understand and evaluate the information. The combination of first-hand and second-hand information should make the entry more comprehensive and persuasive, but there was a need to ensure that the second-hand information cited was reliable and appropriate. 유신예 (talk) 04:55, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bluemoonodem: Yes, but since Wikipedia articles are copyrighted and licensed under CC-BY-SA, you must license the resulting podcast (or that portion of it) under CC-BY-SA, and also attribute it to the article. -Arch dude (talk) 02:53, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Page previews when hover over links?

Trout me if you need to.

I don't know whether I should put this in technical or misc or here, but I haven't been seeing the page preview when I'm hovering over links. Like, maybe twice randomly today I've seen it, but not much. Just me? and if it is, any way I can fix it? Quantum684 (My talk page) 00:21, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@684pika: If you are logged in when it fails then is "Enable page previews" selected at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? If you are logged out when it fails then do you have "Edit preview settings" at the bottom of pages? PrimeHunter (talk) 10:12, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Logged in, and yes I have that on. Quantum684 (My talk page) 14:22, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Making userboxes on my Userpage

I need help to create the list of userboxes down the right hand side of my userpage. I have been following the instructions to create a number of userboxes down the right hand side of my Userpage. I have inserted the Userboxtop then tried putting in a userbox template beneath it. I have done this in both Visual editor and Source. The problem is that the userboxtop seems to take all the existing content on my user page and include it in its template so there is now a new "frame" around my text on the userpage and the heading Userbox top is at the top, centred. Also, when I insert a user box underneath, it does not justify to the right margin but sits on the left. The instructions to insert userboxes do not seem to suit my userpage. It may be because there are a lot of tables on my userpage? Maybe the cursor needs to be in a certain place? Can an experienced editor who uses userboxes please start the userbox list going for me on my userpage by adding in userboxtop then one or two of the stats boxes on right side to get me started? I would like to have Active edits and Active articles on english wikipedia to start then I will look at how it was done and continue to add userboxes myself. See Wikipedia:Userboxes/Wikipedia/Stats and tools/edit count.LPascal (talk) 02:18, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@LPascal: I don't see any userboxes on your userpage, but you mention Userboxtop. You need to pair that with a corresponding Userboxbottom that follows your userboxes, maybe that will help you. RudolfRed (talk) 02:32, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, Userboxtop has several options, including alignment (although the docs say right is the default, I haven't tried it)edited for clarity. RudolfRed (talk) 02:35, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Another editor went into my user page and started off the userbox list. It may have worked because they added userboxbottom underneath userboxtop and then the user boxes in between. The WP instructions say to put userboxbottom only after I have added in the userboxes, not at first. LPascal (talk) 03:01, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What was your purpose in removing Mechelle McCain's page?

Please put Mechelle McCain's wikipedia page back, if you have no REAL REASON for taking it down. Thank you. 2603:6011:853A:4469:3142:627D:F58C:F590 (talk) 03:42, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like Draft:Mechelle McCain has a history of being deleted and then 'refunded' the last 3 years... --Onorem (talk) 03:47, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As an administrator, I am able to read the deleted draft. That draft says she is the ex-wife of Mike Epps, which is confirmed in his biography. Having once been married to a notable person does not make the ex-wife notable. The draft said she was an actress in a film called The Fighting Temptations but the article about that 2003 film has a very long cast list and she does not appear on it. IMDb lists her as #34 in the cast as "Girl in Nightclub". That looks like a bit part. Based on what I know at this point, I do not see any evidence that she is a notable actress, and much of the coverage of her online is because her divorce from Epps was contentious. In my view, the deletion of the draft was correct. Cullen328 (talk) 06:20, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Weird issue with transparent images outside of infobox

I've seen this on multiple articles, such as Malroth, where the second image is not actually transparent. I think it might be because of the theme I use on Wikipedia, but for me, the transparent background is a white background. Is this a known issue? - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 07:08, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are you using a dark theme? vghfr (✉ Talk) (✏ Contribs) 13:37, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am, yes. Does that affect how the transparency is displayed? - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 19:53, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Another article written weirdly… this time… it’s too many links.

     Courtesy link: Missed connection

I often write posts on the help desk. When I talked about Leros written weirdly in early March, these 2 helpers, @Martin of Sheffield and @Deor came to help. Thank you both for these edits! Send them both a WikiLove or a barnstar that says “For your contributions to Leros.” or other titles of your choice.

Hello. When I saw an article called Missed connections there was too much links. Everywhere. Does it contain original research or multiple issues? Also contains a quote box template from a California magazine. Can someone tidy up the article? Let me know if you done it. Then, check the edit history page and also ask who added those links and the quote box. (I’ve tried using Wikiblame, but it always asks for the start date.)2.103.231.248 (talk) 16:10, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I get info on where I can request other users to check a page?

     Courtesy link: Daniel Kahneman

I've been asked recently to check over the page Daniel Kahneman to make sure it's good and has a NPOV, but I'm much too busy to check over it at this moment. Is there anywhere I can go to ask someone else to check over it? Muffin(talk page ain't working) 18:13, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help finding and fixing a bunch of broken interwiki (wikisource) links

Hi,

we need some advice and/or help with the issue discussed in more detail at User talk:Dave souza § Wikisource links broken. In summary, the situation is this:

• Wikisource pages for the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District decision were created in 2006 and then cited likely hundreds of times across dozens of articles.
• In 2019, these pages were merged in a way that broke all (?) of those refs. Some have been manually repaired since then.
• How best to go about tracking down and repairing the rest?

Surely, such a situation is far from unprecedented, and there are more or less systematic methods to deal with it?

Cheers,

Photo's being scrubbed of content

I had magnified the Orion Nebula. Located an object that the Webb took a distant picture of. How this object had been overlooked. It's has been scrubbed recently within the last week. What is there is not current and what I've saved on my phone. No notification of updates. The same as before 2016 2603:3024:9E8:6060:405F:3064:36B2:D949 (talk) 00:45, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your initial Section and Photo added to Orion Nebula were reverted, correctly, by user Fountains of Bryn Mawr because none of the text was referenced to any published reliable source (Wikipedia does not care about unknown individuals' opinions, whether mine, yours or any other editor's) and the text style was inappropriate for an encyclopedia, the entire added section read as if it were indirectly promoting your own photo.
That photo, admittedly an excellent one, is welcome in Wikimedia Commons where it still resides, and might be added to one or more articles in the future by other editors, but it would be inappropriate self promotion for you yourself to do so.
Your subsequent addition of two sentences to the lede paragraph, also reverted by Fountains, partly repeated facts already present in the lede, which should only summarise fuller text further on in the article, and it contained a grammatical error and a non-MOS use of a unit symbol. It might be appropriate to add a new section about amateur observation of the Nebula and the type of equipment needed to do so, but this would need to summarise material from published reliable sources and be correctly cited to them, rather than be one private individual's opinions (which, incidentally, I share). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.198.186.221 (talk) 04:43, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Section edit

I have recently redesigned my user page (User:Cambalachero), dividing it into sections for the topics I usually edit, and placing at each one the alticle alerts from the related wikiprojects, so I can see them all at a single page and have an easier time finding things to do. Problem is, the sections have lost the [edit] button at the right. I suppose that those article alerts must have a "no edit section" magic word (the wikiproject pages do not have such buttons either), and that's what prevents them from showing up at my page. Is there a way to counter that and force to edit section buttons to appear? Cambalachero (talk) 00:49, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User page questions

I noticed multiple users adding color (e.g. blue) name of their user page (header I think) when it is displayed. Also, I have noticed them add icons to their header. How would I do such in my user page? Mseingth2133444 (talk/contribs) 02:10, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
