Star Trek Fotonovel series is a sequence of photo comics adaptations of twelve episodes of The Original Series.[a] Each volume contains full-color stills taken from the film master of the adapted episode. The completed pages include comics-style speech and scene bubbles. The original teleplay writers are credited.

Mandala Productions, who produced the series for Bantam Books, said their goal was to publish "accurate and faithful recreations" of the episodes.[2] The series was cancelled after twelve adaptations due to poor sales.[3]

Star Trek: New Visions is a comics series that utilized imagery from The Original Series to create original stories. Stills from episodes were manipulated using modern photo editing software tools and effects.[1] Each completed frame is original to the comics series. Byrne's intention was for characters, setting, and action, to be seamless, regardless of the original image's source. All issues were written by John Byrne, and published by IDW Publishing.[1][4]

Numbered issues were published from 2014 to 2018. Collections were published in trade paperback format from 2014 to 2019. "The Cage" (2016) special issue was published between Issues 11 and 12, and was collected in Vol. 8.
