Rail network divided by area of country

This list of countries by rail transport network size based on International Union of Railways data ranks countries by length of rail lines worked at end of year updated with other reliable sources. These figures also include urban/suburban mass-transport systems; as well as lines which are not used for passenger services.[1]

  1. ^ In 2014, Network Rail, which owns the railway infrastructure in Great Britain, was reclassified as a "public sector body" and its financial liabilities are now formally included as part of the national debt.[32] Much debate continues if this constitutes as the "nationalisation" of Network Rail.[citation needed] Private firms continue to operate the majority of train services under government franchises or concessions.
