Queendom (Korean퀸덤; RRKwindeom) is a South Korean reality competition television program that aired on Mnet.

The first season aired from August 29 to October 31, 2019, on every Thursday at 21:20 (KST).[1] For the first season, Mamamoo finished in first place while Oh My Girl in second place.[2]

The second season, dubbed as Queendom 2, premiered on March 31, 2022 airing in the same time slot.[3]

Overview

The program is a comeback battle between 6 trending girl group acts, in order to "determine the real number one" when all 6 release their singles at the same time.[4] The winning act will have a comeback show only for them, showing the new song and their other hit songs, arranged however they want it. The comeback show was broadcast on Mnet and M2.[5]

The program's first season lasted for 10 weeks, from August 29, 2019, to October 31, 2019. The first season featured 3 preliminary performances and 1 live comeback stage from each act. The Comeback Singles, which are newly produced songs, of the 6 acts were released on October 25, 2019, at 12:00 (KST). The digital points accumulated for the Comeback Singles and live votes for the comeback stages on the final episode, together with the accumulated points from the 3 preliminary performances, were the keys to determine the final winner.[6]

The first season's winner was Mamamoo; their comeback show happened on November 3, 2020 as the group made their comeback with their tenth mini album Travel.[7]

Rules

Season 1 (2019)
  • The overall final ranking of the first season is based on the following criteria:
    1. 3 preliminary performances (1st preliminary performance - 10,000 points, 2nd preliminary performance - 10,000 points, 3rd preliminary performance - 15,000 points)
    2. Digital points of the Comeback Singles calculated from the time of release till October 28, 2019 23:59 (KST) (maximum of 15,000 points)
    3. Finale live comeback stages text message votes (maximum of 50,000 points)
  • For the preliminary performances, if one act gets a 6th place twice, they would have to step down from the show. This is also named the "Dishonored Step Down" (불명예 하차).

1st Preliminary Performances - Representative Hit Song

The 6 acts each perform one of their representative hit songs, that is rearranged and different from their usual stages of the song.

Before Performance

  • All 6 acts have 10 minutes to arrange the cue sheet for this round.[A]
  • The acts can forcefully rearrange the orders.
  • If 1 act doesn't put themselves in to the cue sheet by the end of the 10 minutes, a 1,000 points penalty will be ruled to that act.

After Performance

  • For this round, each act can get a maximum of 10,000 points, and in the following distribution:
    1. Audience Judge Squad: 7,000 points
    2. Special Judge Squad (idol trainees who are all direct juniors to the Queendom acts): 2,000 points
    3. Self-assessment from the other Queendom acts: 1,000 points
  • The audience and the special judges will watch all 6 performances, and after that each of them can only vote for 2 acts.
  • The act that receives the most votes from the Special Judge Squad will have all 2,000 points secured to themselves.
  • For the self-assessment from the other Queendom acts, every act has to vote for an act that they believed to have performed better than them and an act they believed to have performed worse than them. A hidden rule is that an act also can choose not to vote (usually) for an act that is better than them.

2nd Preliminary Performances - Cover Song

The 6 acts each perform a song from a fellow Queendom act, and is rearranged into a different style.

Before Performance

  • The 1st placed act from the 1st preliminary performances will get the priority to choose an act of their choice and cover one of their songs in this round. The chosen act will also cover one of the songs from the chooser act. This process goes on for the 2nd placed act, and the remaining 2 acts not chosen will automatically become a pair to cover each other's songs.
  • The 1st placed act from the 1st preliminary performances will also get to arrange the cue sheet for this round.
  • Each act has to perform a Queendom Quest, which is to be picked by random. When an act successfully completed the Queendom Quest, they can get only 1 of the following benefits picked by random:
    • Rehearsal Watching 1 Day Free Pass (it is usually not allowed to watch other acts rehearse)
    • Special Effects Free Pass
    • One-time Cue Sheet Position Exchange Pass
    • 2nd Preliminary Performances Song Selection Free Pass
    • Production Crew Chance

After Performance

  • For this round, each act can get a maximum of 10,000 points, and in the following distribution:
    1. Audience Judge Squad: 7,000 points
    2. Special Judge Squad (security guards): 2,000 points

3rd Preliminary Performances - Unit Performances

Part 1: Unit Round (5,000 points) — The 6 acts will each send a main vocal and a main dancer, to form vocal units and 1 performance unit. The vocal units will compete to gain points as a unit, while the performance unit will perform together but will compete for their respective groups' points.

Part 2: Fan-dora's Box (10,000 points) — The 6 acts will each perform a song suggested by the audience.

Before Performance

  • For this round, besides each act sending a main vocal and a main dancer to the Queendom Workshop to practise for the unit performances, the rest of the contestants would join the Workshop as supporters.[B]
  • Special appearances by Don Spike and Lia Kim [ko] as vocal mentor and dance mentor respectively.
  • During the Queendom Workshop, each of the vocal units would undergo intermediate check. All the contestants will then each vote a vocal unit they think would be number one in the real performances after all the units have performed their small snippets.
  • During the Queendom Workshop, a Queendom Quest between the 6 acts will be played. The winning act of the Queendom Quest will get to choose the Special Judge Squad for Fan-dora's Box.
  • The 1st placed act from the 2nd preliminary performances gets to arrange the cue sheet for Fan-dora's Box.

After Performance
Part 1: Unit Round

  • Members of the audience will each vote for their favourite vocal unit and a favourite member of the performance unit.
  • For this part, each act can get a maximum of 5,000 points, combined through the following distribution:
    • Vocal units points allocated in the following distribution:
    1. 1st place vocal unit: 2,500 points each for the unit's members' respective groups
    2. 2nd place vocal unit: 1,500 points each for the unit's members' respective groups
    3. 3rd place vocal unit: 500 points each for the unit's members' respective groups
    • For the performance unit points, the member with the most votes gets the full 2,500 points for her group, and the points of the remaining members would be calculated in proportion to the 1st placed member.

Part 2: Fan-dora's Box

  • For this part, each act can get a maximum of 10,000 points, and in the following distribution:
    1. Audience Judge Squad: 7,000 points
    2. Special Judge Squad (housewives singing club members): 2,000 points

Finale Live Comeback Stages

The 6 acts will each perform a newly produced song live on the final episode.

  • The 1st placed act from the 3rd preliminary performances gets to arrange the cue sheet for the final stages.
  • For this round, each act can get a maximum of 50,000 points, all the points based on the text message votes from the general public, and there will not be any live audience voting.
    • The act with the most votes gets 50,000 points, and the points of the remaining acts would be calculated in proportion of the number of votes received to the number of votes received by the 1st placed act.
Season 2 (2022)
  • For this season, the overall ranking is based on the following:
    1. 3 preliminary performances (1st preliminary performance - 10,000 points, 2nd preliminary performance - TBA points, 3rd preliminary performance - TBA points)
    2. Digital points of the Comeback Singles calculated from the time of release till TBA (maximum of TBA points)
    3. Performance videos view and like count (only for the Full Version videos, and data for the first 4 days of upload are taken; for the likes count, figure after multiplying by 100 would be taken)
    4. Finale live comeback stages text message votes (maximum of TBA points)
  • For the preliminary performances, if one act gets a 6th place twice, they will be eliminated from the show.

1st Round – Representative Song Battle

The 6 acts each perform their own representative songs. They may choose how many songs to perform, and are also allowed to perform songs from their past groups or acts.

The first round has a maximum of 10,000 points to obtain. The calculation of points is based on three factors:

  • Live audience votes (up to 6,000 points)
  • Global audience votes (up to 3,000 points)
  • Self-evaluation by the other acts (up to 1,000 points)
