The UK Singles Chart is one of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company that calculates the best-selling singles of the week in the United Kingdom.[1] Since 2004 the chart has been based on the sales of both physical singles and digital downloads, with airplay figures excluded from the official chart.[2][3] Since 2014, the singles chart has been based on both sales and streaming; in 2020 it uses the ratio of 150 streams equivalent to one sale (not 100:1 as previously).[4]
Chart rules were altered again from 7 July 2018 to help new artists break through by limiting the number of tracks by the same artist allowed in the chart at the same time to 3. The streaming to sales ratio remained largely unchanged but for songs which have spent a high number of weeks in the chart the ratio is altered to 300:1.[5] This list shows singles that peaked in the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart during 2020, as well as songs which peaked in 2019 or 2021 but were in the top 40 in 2020. The entry date is when the song appeared in the top 40 for the first time (week ending, as published by the Official Charts Company, which is six days after the chart is announced).
Three-hundred and twelve singles were in the top forty this year. Sixteen singles from 2018 and fifty-three singles from 2019 remained in the top 40 for several weeks at the beginning of the year, or re-entered during the year. "Adore You" by Harry Styles, "Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi, "Better Half of Me" by Tom Walker, "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd, "Don't Rush" by Young T & Bugsey featuring Headie One, "Falling" by Harry Styles, "Falling" by Trevor Daniel, "Gangsta" by Darkoo & One Acen, "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" by John Legend, "Into the Unknown" by Idina Menzel featuring Aurora, "Own It" by Stormzy featuring Ed Sheeran & Burna Boy, "Pump It Up!" by Endor, "River" by Ellie Goulding, "Roxanne" by Arizona Zervas, "This Is Real" by Jax Jones featuring Ella Henderson and "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles all first charted in 2019 but reached their peak in 2020. "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran also re-entered the chart in 2020 after peaking at number-one on its original release in 2017, while "Sicko Mode" by Travis Scott returned after peaking at number 9 in 2018.
Ninety-four artists had multiple entries in the top forty in 2020 with Drake and Justin Bieber having the joint most entries (10). Singles that reached the top ten this year are featured here but also included in their own article. "Blinding Lights" from 2019 spent 51 consecutive weeks in the top 40, dropping out on 10th December but returning one week later at number 39 for a further week.
